🎓 Reddit experts on component video cables
The comments and opinions expressed on this page are written exclusively by redditors. To provide you with the most relevant data, we sourced opinions from the most knowledgeable Reddit users based the total number of upvotes and downvotes received across comments on subreddits where component video cables are discussed. For your reference and for the sake of transparency, here are the specialists whose opinions mattered the most in our ranking.
You can stream from the PS2, but make sure to get a component cable like this
http://www.amazon.com/MADCATZ-MOV06155V-Universal-Component-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B000IAPGIS/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1394134709&sr=8-13&keywords=ps2+component+cable.
Along with the Game Capture HD (like alexh86 mentioned) or a HD PVR 2. You should be fine. If you want to stream quick and easy, I would recommend PCSX2 if your PC can handle it. It is what I will be using to stream my PS2 games and it looks amazing.
Like SketchTop, I use the Dazzle for N64,Gamecube, Wii, PS1, and PS2 games. If you want to record in HD, I recommend the Hauppauge HD-PVR.
Hauppauge
Dazzle
Note that you will need to buy some extra cables like:
S-video Cables
Component Cables
You may also need a distribution amplifier for the Dazzle depending on how you want your setup.
Distribution Amp
Hope this helped. I'm a fairly new LPer so feel free to disregard my recommendations if someone who is more experienced offers different advice. Feel free to read customer reviews so you can fully decide what you want. When you start making videos, you should post a link to your channel! Hope everything goes well!
Buy something like this:
http://amzn.com/B00005MDZD
Turn on your PS2 without a disc inside. You can set the output to be CYMK and widescreen. It looks great and clear on an HDTV.
I used a cable like this to get a really nice-looking FF12 session. Some games support true HD settings.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_2_games_with_HD_support
The most common high quality capture card you can use would be the the Elgato Game Capture HD. You would want 2 component cables, at least 5 splitters, and a component connection to a Wii. There is free software called OBS that you can use to stream and record and there are a number of options if you are looking to just record (there is even software that Elgato offers) but most like to use VirtualDub. This of course can be very expensive. If you are looking for cheaper options there are cheaper capture cards available such as the Dazzle and the Diamond. Both work fine but you won't achieve as crisp as a picture. These are the cards that I have had experience with but I have also heard good things from the Avermedia.
I have the 4850, and this is a great solution for people who don't want to mess around with transcoders. You will need a 7 pin to component adaptor for the best result. Problem is that these ports can only put out a digital signal, so the best resolution you're gonna get is 480i. It's a great compromise though, and a good place holder while you decide whether you want to try and send an analog signal to your tube.
Something like this should work fine:
https://www.amazon.com/Kyper-7-Pin-S-Video-Green-Component/dp/B00VF2SUIG/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=7+pin+to+component+cable&qid=1564810833&s=gateway&sr=8-3
Thank you so much!! :) Sounds like component cables might be the way to go for now then. If I was only doing PS1 games, I'd probably get SCART, but I'm doing a mix of PS1, PS2, and even some Gamecube games, and it sounds like component cables will cause the least amount of compatibility issues.
There is one last small question I have. I was looking at the PS2 component cables here, I noticed that the D-Terminal to Component Adapter that I can buy with the Framemeister has only 3 female sockets, when the PS2 cables have 5 cords. Is this normal, or am I looking at the wrong kind of PS2 cables or something?
Thanks again! :)
This is what I use as well - the brand on mine is Panlong but it's basically the same thing. Eventually it would be cool to get one that will auto-detect when a signal is coming in so I can just turn the console on and go, but I'm happy with what I have for now.
OP, you may also want to consider using a multi-cable like this.
I second the comment on component cables. I changed over to them on my HDTV this year and it was like a revelation. Well not that big a difference but all the blurriness went away. They're pretty cheap too. I got one at a local shop. Like this: https://www.amazon.com/Component-V-Cable-Playstation-2/dp/B00005MDZD
What are you trying to convert the HDMI to? If you want to convert to component, here is this which is highly rated on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001ID829O/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1425936120&sr=8-2&keywords=hdmi+to+component&pi=AC_SY200_QL40&dpPl=1&dpID=41h4vvUzkbL&ref=plSrch
You need to look at all of your ports and determine what your best connector is. If you have dvi or vga you may be able to get better video quality.
If you send your specific model of television I may be able to provide a more specific response.
HD Retrovision YPbPr Component Video Female-to-Male RCA Extension Cable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H3F6WYT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_YuiSBbPS908RB
Best there is. Have fun!
Hi, looks like you're a bit confused with the cables :p
The yellow cable is irrelevant for X1.
The converter : http://imgur.com/a/jtMgL
You either need that cable
OR this one for video signal AND this one for audio
You might have (one of) those laying somewhere around your house ?
Was that clear ? :) (english is not my native language)
My TV doesn't support CEC, so I will have to go with the IR route. The tv came with an IR emitter, but its only a few feet long. Just to confirm, it sounds like I should buy something like this, hook up the receiver from the TV and put the emitter right in front of the audio receiver. Is that correct?
https://www.amazon.com/Sewell-Direct-SW-29727-25-Infrared-Extension/dp/B00SZIGI5U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1486409980&sr=8-2&keywords=infrared+receiver+25+feet
Do you also need the power cable? I believe the PS3 power cable will work. So will any Vizio TV power cord, as well as a few assorted electric razor cords, boombox cords, and some older printer/scanners. (This only applies to the fat models!)
As for the video cables... We need to know a little more about your TV. Does it only do composite (3 plugins) or will it also do component (5 plugins)? If it will do component, I'd go with those. It's a much clearer picture on modern flat screen TV's.
Composite cables (Amazon): https://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-2-Composite-AV-Cable-PlayStation2/dp/B00004U8QX
Component cables (Amazon): https://www.amazon.com/Component-V-Cable-Playstation-2/dp/B00005MDZD
Slim Power cord (Amazon, picked because of excellent reviews): https://www.amazon.com/Slim-AC-Adapter-Playstation-2-Pc/dp/B00255V7JQ
Lg lcd tv correct? Your tv would have come with 2x adaptors. If you dont have them it should be pretty easy to new ones
https://www.amazon.com/LG-Component-Audio-Video-Adapter/dp/B01EQ7TYNQ
You need an HDMI splitter that supports DHCP.
It's this stupid copyright protection that gets added to technology, that doesn't ever stop any "hackers", but messes up normal peoples stuff.
FYI there are different levels of HDCP. I think it has to be greater than 2.1 to work with dtv, but I'm not sure.
The best thing to do would be to take the splitter out of the picture, use the HDMI for 1 run, and use this cable for the other one.
EDIT: u/WTtoolman has informed me that this might not be the case anymore. As in, it worked for years, but doesn't anymore without the HDMI connected TV being on. I'm going to do some tests tomorrow. If anyone can chime in on this scenario, please do.
There is a company that makes these specially for Direct TV boxes for use in their DTV LA market. I have to look up the name, as I don't order from them often.
Something like this. Some barrel connectors and should be good to go.
This is the one I got a couple of months ago, it works perfectly and is only $6:
https://www.amazon.com/Component-Cable-Audio-Video-Black/dp/B07RXMY5CM/
What I'm doing, and this is the best quality PS2 video I've managed to conjure up on my HD projector, is using a PS2 component cable and a component-to-HDMI converter. There are a lot of different kinds of converters than the one I linked here. My receiver doesn't have HDMI, so I'm converting the receiver's component out to an HDMI hub.
I just got these in the mail and they work perfectly
I have These and they work great
Just so you know they did end up making Composite cables for both PS2's and they are fairly cheap. So you can play your PS2 games with your HDTV if they have a composite cable slot. I have a huge ps2 collection so I will not be re buying all my games.
Link: http://www.amazon.com/Component-V-Cable-Playstation-2/dp/B00005MDZD/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449245908&sr=8-1&keywords=ps2+composite+cables
How are you plugging the TV into the PC? I assume you have some sort of adapter like this?
If your Vizio has an HDMI, you can buy an HDMI to DVI and that would be the best way to hook it up, with digital signal and support for higher resolutions. Audio would not be an option, but neither would it be for RGB.
yes, but some use a 10-pin solution where there is one 10-pin port on the genie and the cable branches out to be AV Cables. This is on all genie minis and the HR54. Here is what they look like.
SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS
I'm serious, I played that for 3 hours today. so fucking good. Also, the Jak series. play 'em in order.
if you're using an HDTV, this is mandatory.
RGB cable and here is the Retrovision component cable and Lastly SB-2840
This is all plug n play, it will transfer audio to the TV as well, comes with power adapter, etc. As for buying RGB cables from the first link I sent. You have to wake up at 10am EST time, wake up 10 minutes early and start spamming refresh on there website 2-3 minutes early. Then you can order one of their RGB cables, before they go "out of stock." They only sell 20-30 at a time, so make sure you get the jump on it. The rest is always in stock so you will be good to go.
http://www.amazon.com/Component-A-V-Cable-Playstation-2/dp/B00005MDZD
Less than 10 bucks and you get it in 2 days for free if you have Prime
Better sit down, cuz I am about to blow. your. mind.
http://www.amazon.com/Component-%252fV-Cable-Playstation-2/dp/B00005MDZD/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325296137&sr=8-1
Could I not just use an hdmi to hdmi for one monitor and something like this for the other monitor?
Need the following adapters:
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Component-Cable-Signal-UN50MU6300FXZA/dp/B074617CD1/ref=pd_bxgy_23_img_2/143-5791592-9905352?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B074617CD1&pd_rd_r=38ee5614-b788-4067-8cf9-1df0242ee507&pd_rd_w=PnPGT&pd_rd_wg=IOGjh&pf_rd_p=09627863-9889-4290-b90a-5e9f86682449&pf_rd_r=SNV3911TF6PVKD44GXJ2&psc=1&refRID=SNV3911TF6PVKD44GXJ2
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Cable-Adapter-Audio-Video/dp/B073494ZG2
Note The green Component and yellow composite video signals are shared, plus the G/Y video cable also is for the stereo audio (red and white).
I initially bought these cheap ones on Amazon.
When I thought they were the issue, I went back and bout these used Sony brand cables on amazon
So in a manner of speaking, I just wasted $80 on a good quality scart cable, and a converter? Or can I just use retrovision male to male cables like these:
https://www.amazon.com/HD-Retrovision-YPbPr-Component-Video/dp/B07KRKM96K/ref=asc_df_B07KRKM96K/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309764501757&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15031439677960115889&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=21176&hvtargid=pla-641536001714&psc=1
I used a standard HDMI cable with the hdmi port and I used a MiniDP-to-HDMI cable from one of the thunderbolt ports. Like this one..
The Thunderbolt Monitor runs off the other thunderbolt port.
You're thinking of composite. Component is the 5 plugs, orange-blue-green for the video and a red-white for audio. Something like this, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005MDZD
Also, the plug for ps2 and ps3 cable is the same, so a ps3 compatible component cable should work with a ps2.
Buy these cables (or similar ones) and hook up the ps2 with them assuming your tv has the inputs.
One of the reasons it looks bad is because all the video info is squeezed into that one yellow cable, so the quality gets degraded.
The component cables in the link send different parts of the video through different wires, so the quality is really good.
It wont look perfect, but it will look a lot better.
While we are on the subject I was hoping to get some advice on component cables for PS2. The one I'm looking at someone said they had trouble playing PS1 games on the PS2 using this cable, is that normal or are PS1 games not compatible with them?
For reference this is the cables I'm looking at: http://www.amazon.com/Component-V-Cable-Playstation-2/dp/B00005MDZD
http://www.amazon.com/Intec-Component-Cable-PS2-Playstation-2/dp/B00005MDZD
Gamestop used to sell a special component cable that would work with PS2, PS3, X360 and Wii, but I can't seem to find it anymore.
I don't mind dealing with the cables, and it'd be a little bit cheaper.
So instead of that $24 cable, this will work fine? https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-RCA-Component-Video-Cable/dp/B001TH7GT6
These are the cables I bought and they work fine.
Amazon has sellers that have the Playstation2 component cable.
Sorry didn't see your reply before now. Here's a cheap set on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Intec-Component-Cable-PS2-Playstation-2/dp/B00005MDZD/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370878620&sr=8-1&keywords=ps2+component
I don't know if you can find "official" component cables.
But this should do.
When you hook the up, you have to go into the PS2 system configuration and change the video output. There are two options. Don't remember what they were called, but just switch to the other option.
https://www.amazon.com/TENINYU-Compatible-HDTV-READY-COMPONENT-5-WIRE/dp/B07378Z9L1/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=ps2+component+cable&qid=1563281937&s=gateway&sprefix=PS2+comp&sr=8-3 y’all ever just become the m I d d l e c h I l d
If it's DVI-I then you could use one of these, and they are just under $13.

I can't find a solution for RCA that allows stepping down from HDMI to RCA directly that doesn't have a good review. Most want to go from HDMI to Svideo then Svideo to RCA. To me, that's too many steps and can cause latency issues.
Those cables dont work like 95% of the time. Normally when converting a digital signal to analog youll need a converter box thats powered.

You're missing one of these (for RCA): https://www.amazon.com/HDE-Triple-Composite-Splitter-Adapter/dp/B00CIC9KW2/ref=pd_lpo_23_bs_lp_t_2
or this (for component): https://www.amazon.com/LG-Component-Audio-Video-Adapter/dp/B01EQ7TYNQ
I used one for mine. This specifically should work with most HDTVs. I say most because I have no idea if a 4K TV for example has it.
I have obtained similar items when buying iphones and video game consoles. I can't recommend these particular ones, but the cords I have come in handy. First one is for the several different apple products, 2nd link is for ps2/ps3, wii and xbox 360. The particular one I have has an adapter for some older nintendo consoles.
