So, disclaimer: Shadow of the Cabal is recorded digitally over roll20, with each of us recording our own tracks independently in our own homes, and I stitch them together to make a show. We do not sit at the same table IRL, so some of my advice may or may not be applicable.

Also, I assume that your intent with your recording is to eventually release a story that is listenable for random internet people, and you're not just recording to log your own sessions. So here we go:

  • As far as technical production, I highly recommend that each person has their own microphone. I'm no expert on in-person recording setups, and there are probably dozens of guides online, but I know that if you want to have multiple mics going on in-person, you'll need your microphones, a mixer, and then a computer to record the audio. Past that, I'm not your guy. I just recommend that you don't have a single mic in the middle of the table if you're going for something that intends to be high audio quality. Because if you're all talking into one channel, there's no way to mute certain people's mouth sounds, cross-talk can become an issue, and if anyone touches or bumps the table, it will be audible for everyone, and there's no fixing that in audacity. Having multiple mics and a mixer and a laptop can be expensive, but if you're looking for a few good quality cheaper mics, I recommend this one, it comes in USB and 3.5mm formats, so make sure you select the right one for your setup. If you HAVE to record with just one mic, I recommend getting a Blue Yeti mic, as the quality is good and it has a 360 degree mode if you want to put it at the middle of the table.

  • As far as the actual gameplay goes, you need your whole group to understand that you're playing for radio. How is that different than playing normally? Your players need to announce the results of their rolls, they can't get bogged down in minutiae, the action needs to keep moving forward, and as the GM you need to paint a clear picture of the scene. Avoid using any battle mats, grids, or other visual aids at the table. If the audience can't see them, don't rely on them for your game. There's a lot more I could get into this topic, but those are the basics in my opinion. If you intend for your recording to be a story for an audience, rather than a raw log of your friends hanging out and playing an RPG, the intent for the finished product needs to be kept in mind while you play.

  • When it comes to editing, if it doesn't serve the story, cut it. So if a scene ends up going nowhere and the audience doesn't learn anything new from it, err on the side of removing it. This includes everything from whole scenes or sentences, all the way down to pauses while people are thinking, removing uhm's and ah's, coughs, sniffles, breaths, etc. It's a lot of work for sure, but when in doubt, I select a piece of audio in Audacity. Then I listen through, and ask myself "Did the action of the story move forward in this section of audio, or did we learn anything important and new about a character?" If the answer is no, then cut it.

These are what I consider to be the basics of playing L5R for a podcast, but just to reiterate, this is only MY methodology when it comes to these things. There are lots of other opinions and production styles out there, and lots of them from people who have more experience and are better than I am. This is just what has worked for me so far.

That's what I assumed too but in the Q&A under the product on Amazon I found someone who asked a similar question, and it sounds to me like the USB does NOT act as phantom power. It makes no sense to me why that wouldn't power it but ....

Looks like I'll either need to try tunnelsup's idea, using the box I have or just get a new mic. If my box doesn't work, I think I'd sooner buy a new mic than spend $100 on the box he linked, since my current mic is likely not that great compared to one I could get for ~$100, and not have to mess with the extra equipment.

Something like:

All but 1 cost less than the box, and have great reviews. Proven to sound great and work out of the box direct to PC.

Monoprice Gateron blue keyboard and 8323 headphones are both highly acclaimed for value. Promo code "scorcher" for %15 off. If you need TKL then there's no shortage of Outemu switches for $40 or less, this Teswell looks good. I haven't used these keyboards but I've bought two of the headphones. I have a pile of $30 headphones that I've reviewed and none come close. Pair them with a Neewer lapel mic or V-Moda BoomPro. In the middle ground you might try this generic desktop mic or one of the many others like it, mine sounds well enough but the BoomPro plainly takes it. At the next tier Superlux 886B or Samson SR850 with a ModMic or Blue Snowball are great during sales. Don't fall for 'gaming' branding.

u/Plethorius · 1 pointr/LucidDreaming

I'm not completely sure right off. The one I bought (not just for this project) is a Blue Snowball. But that was because I wanted the extra options and range it has over other cheaper models to catch more "realistic" sounds. It's a $70 mic but I checked around and picked up a lightly used one on eBay for $37. But I don't think you'd need something like that to capture the type of voices we're going for, and no way I'd ask you to go buy something like that.

I'd have to suggest first giving it a shot with your webcam's microphone or your phone with a recording app and see how it sounds. Depending on the brand and model of the computer / webcam it might not be bad. I'd hate for you to have to go spend money for this.

But if you do decide to get something... I had looked at a couple in the $20 range before I crapped myself over the Snowball. The one I was originally planning to buy was this one which has pretty good reviews for it's price and intended use. And coming in at $13 is this one which looks like it might be just fine for speech recording. But whatever you do... Stay far far away from the "Connectland Gooseneck Tabletop Mic", trust me it's freaking terrible.

u/Bigguy338 · 10 pointsr/AmazonUnder5

I wrote this comment with gaming in mind, but if that's not really your thing, I can try to help find something else.

A decent wireless mouse will run you around $3-5 with a wired one being about $10. Budget headphones or if you already have a pair, headphone mounts will run about $10-20 each.

You might be able to find a decent mousepad for your budget but nicer ones are $5-10. Flash drives are on sale right now for $8-10 from Sandisk and a standalone microphone is around $10.

Not sure if the credit on your account is due to expire or not, but I'd use this site to monitor any items you may purchase as it will alert you via email to price drops.

If the credit will not expire, however, I recommend saving it and putting it towards a more expensive purchase as $3.46 is a bit limiting.

Awesome, thank you. Another redditor also mentioned good luck with this one if someone is looking for a very compact option.

Audio-Technica ATH-M20x. should be around that and sounds pretty good. Combined with a cheap condenser mic from amazon like https://www.amazon.com/Microphone-Professional-Recording-Compatible-Mac-Recorder/dp/B07T9ZPLYX/ref=zg_bs_3015406011_9?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=2Q3M8HGEW4KPP2DN96EG

Should get you better sound then most 100bucks gaming ones.

u/silentnick1992 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I suppose you could try it next time you're there :)

If not I'd suggest something like this and this. Quality of the mic I can't confirm, just using it as an example for what you could look for but the headphones are incredible (sound quality wise) for it's price point. And superlux also do headsets with built in mics, I can't speak to their quality but if it's anything like the other 5 superlux products I've had then it's a pretty solid purchase

u/wtfbbqzlol · 0 pointsr/GlobalOffensive

do you really need a headset?
i have this set up for 5 or 6 years now.
A good headphone (srsly good headphone for under 30€ http://www.amazon.de/Sennheiser-500155-HD-201-Kopfh%C3%B6rer/dp/B0007XJSQC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382601854&sr=8-1&keywords=sennheiser+hd+201
and a table mic. http://www.amazon.de/Kinobo-USB-Mikrofon-Desktop-Computer/dp/B0052SBAEU/ref=pd_sim_computers_9

way better then any headset for that price and people will thank you for a digital mic and not that analog crap

u/formerfatboys · 1 pointr/Windows10

I got this one a year ago for my media center PC. I have 4 Echos and a Google Home. I think this and Cortana compete nicely and sort of carve out different niches of useful. I got a second one for my desktop and if you dig into stuff Cortana can do it can be pretty useful. Totally changed my mind on her.

Choice 1)

  • Astro Mixamp + Audio Technica AD700

  • Pros- Best sound quality, by far.

  • Cons- Expensive (250ish), not wireless, no mic (although you can get a clip on for like 5 buck)

    Choice 2)

  • Turtle Beach XP500

  • Pros- Completely wireless. No Headset or Chat wires. Bluetooth so you can answer calls with headset while gaming. Best all in one Xbox set currently out there.

  • Cons- Also expensive (270+shipping). Choice 1 arguably better sound quality.

    Choice 3)

  • Trition AX Pro

  • Pros- Cheapest of the bunch (160ish). Audio quality comparable to top of the line Astros and Turtle Beaches.

  • Cons- Not wireless.

    ***

One choice isn't "better" than the other. It depends one what features you deem more important.

Source: I've owned a whole shit of headsets.

-Tip: It looks like you're already upgrading from a top tier headset. Once you get into the surround sound realm (the $120-200 range), most headsets are similar and the differences in sound quality are virtually unnoticeable. Take it from someone who's wasted too much money on all of this.
u/LostFYI · 1 pointr/buildapc

Dont get a 4k Monitor, especially not a cheap one. 4k will draw you down in fps + 1070 is too weak for modern titles at 4k (though minecraft will proably run). Still, gaming experience at 1440p 120Hz and higher fps is greater than 4k 60Hz AND lower fps.

Edit: This would be my build. Removed Headset (just get nice headphones like Bose quietComfort 25 which you can use also on the go (i can only recommend them!!!) and plug them via 3,5mm into your PC if you want to game. Then get a cheap single Microphone off amazon (like literally any will do just fine if you only use it for voice chat). and youre done for less money and better graphic capabilites.

I would stay away from gaming headsets. Anything with the word "gaming" in it, is usually overpriced trash. A $40 quality brand AKG headset and a $15 mic will sound better and last longer than a $100 gaming headset. This cheap desk mic will sound better than anything attached to plastic headphones. You'll have to go to microcenter if you want an eight core 2700x with a beefy RGB cooler. Or you can get a slower Ryzen 2600 six core on amazon or Newegg instead.

u/xeros612 · 1 pointr/letsplay

For starting out, I'd suggest going a bit cheaper in price than some others may suggest; that way, if you decide LPing isn't for you or otherwise have to stop doing it, that's less money potentially wasted than if you bought fancy things.

Microphone
I've found this to be a good, low-cost microphone, though its performance with different sound cards will vary. You'll likely want noise reduction or "noise gate" filter if you've got fans or loud A/C running, but it's cheap and works pretty well as a lapel mic.

Capture card
This seems to be a cheap, generally well-reviewed capture device for consoles. 480i of course, but deinterlacing can fix the "i" and you'd have to shell out a fair bit more for HD. I can't vouch for it personally as it's only on my wishlist for the time being. You could look into Dazzle, Elgato, Mygica, or EzCap (that's EzCap, with a Z. "EasyCap" is the company's old name, and pretty much every device on Amazon with the EasyCap label is actually a Chinese bootleg product... I found that out the hard way) for similar products.

PC Capture Software
Playclaw has a terrible license (the price you pay for a full version only buys one year of updates; after that, you have to pay some more for another year of updates) but is less hardware intensive, its "low compression" video codec is similar to FRAPS's, and it allows you to record game and microphone audio at the same time like FRAPS, but as separate audio tracks so you can edit audio levels and whatnot separately. Of course, you'd need editing software that can read that second audio track, and I don't know of any that you can get cheaply without resorting to dodgy means.

If you don't mind a desk mic, this has been working great for me. I use wireless headphones without a built in mic, so having a wired lapel mic or similar is just really inconvenient and negates the benefits of the wireless headphones.

Previously, I used these; they're surprisingly good for cheap mics. It's a 5-pack, so while they're not the most durable things, you have plenty of backups.

u/BobMoriarty · 1 pointr/Twitch

The one I use is an Avermedia Live Gamer HD Lite, which is internal, and works like a charm. My bandwidth will not let me stream 1080p 60 FPS as you intend to, but it is ready to do so on the hardware side. On 720p at 30 FPS it works wonders. In case you're interested to see how it looks with my settings, you can take a look to one of my archived videos here

AverMedia Live Gamer HD is prolly the best choice, i got mine for like 140€ couple of weeks ago. After i checked amazon and shit i saw they are like sold out everywhere so u could prolly also stick with the "lite" version of it. It does basically the same i guess, you just gonna miss out that silly hot button :>
the lite version is like 90-100€ on amazon

Here. I made it all white to keep with that Apple feel. You could save money on the Mic (blueyeti snowball) and the chair.

I turned my linen closet, which is perfectly shaped like an audio booth into my home recording studio. I lined the walls with soundproofing foam (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ACLIFBC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and record on a Blue Yeti (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072PR6W8P/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). I edit in Adobe Audition and use a pair of Audio-Technica headphones (https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR86)

A lot of the universal controllers have mics on them but none of them work with the voice search. Most of them won't bother stating that on their page, so if you think you have found one that may work, get the seller to confirm before you bother buying it.

A workaround might be to buy something like this USB microphone or this one to replace the mic on your control, and then use a universal for all the other functions. The potential problems with this are that:

a) Certain usb mics might not work (or androidtv might break this functionality in future updates). I currently use a C310 webcam, until I can find another cheap usb mic locally. It works well. As a side note, I did actually have my hopes up that I could use the webcam for Skype on my TV, but Skype won't work on androidTV. Also be aware that you need to sit 2m from the mic - some people with big TVs in big houses complain that the accuracy drops too much when they're 3m or more away.

b) You may have to use your universal remote to navigate to and enable the voice search icon, rather than activating it directly with a button on your universal remote: I don't think they can 'learn' the microphone key action from your original remote.

Also remember you can use your phone or tablet as a remote/mic with the Android TV App. It's too much of a hassle for most people to grab their phone every time they want to search, but I just thought I'd mention it.

The main issue is it's attached to your headphones so as you swing your head around wildly (which was great, BTW), it moves farther/closer to your mouth.

Something that wasn't attached would be great. Oh look, here's one for $3.65 after shipping. It's not studio quality but it can't be worse than what you're using anyway.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0052SBAEU/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This one, I bought it a while back, hoping to get a blue snowball soon :)

u/examach · 7 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I have always used Creative sound cards since the mid '90s (currently an X-fi Titanium which is several years old now) and no frills headphones. I think the last time I had an audio issue / complaint was while using Windows ME back in the day.

FWIW My 20+ years of experience as a tech and a gamer simply suggest that other pc gamers stay the hell away from onboard audio and USB headsets entirely. 3.5mm plug - keep your headphones and your mic separate.

Want good PC speakers? Get something from Klipsch; good headphones? Sony MDR series. This is the mic I use and over skype people tell me I sound like i'm talking to them on a regular landline phone - loud and clear.

u/BobbyRobertson · 2 pointsr/LivestreamFail

The dinky DAC used in USB headphones are most of the times worse than what's built in to the 3.5mm port from a console or PC. And the original post was not talking about a mic stand, it was talking about a $50 attachment that can go on just about any pair of headphones

If you plan your headphones well, so that they have a detachable 3.5mm cord there's other options too. I bought a pair of Philips SHP9500 and a Boompro mic for $110. Both the mic and audio quality are much better than what I'd get from an equivalent HyperX headset

As far as webcam, check out this video

For microphone I would use this. It’s called a “boundary microphone” mainly used for recording lots of people in conference calls.

Movo MC1000 Computer Microphone - Professional Conference USB Microphone for Computer Desktop with 180°, 20' Long Pick up Range for PC, Windows & Mac, iOS - Plug and Play Easy Installation https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DJTK8FU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_xWlYDb8TXQNA9

HyperX QuadCast is on sale for $99.99. I've owned mine for a bit now and love it.

On a 1050, my frames are around 60 to 100. I am happy with how it works.

u/_xBenji · 1 pointr/CasualConversation

The cheapest mic I could find that would work

If you want to play my psn in BenSoccer3 I’m sure I’ll be worse than you :)

u/wwwz · 1 pointr/teslamotors

Wow, my gaming buddies have better mics

u/stegabilly · 1 pointr/ShieldAndroidTV

I went for this as I read someone elses success with it, and can confirm it works across the room:

Here's one you can attach to your headphones if you have one.

Blue Snowball

Those two are some of the most popular recommendations on here.

u/nyy22592 · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

I'm looking for a mic that won't pick up keyboard feedback and background noise. Would this or the HyperX Quadcast be a good option?

u/Fliperdudole · 2 pointsr/battlestations

Thanks I appreciate it took a long time to buy and build the whole thing and I got you but the mic mount came with the mic but I'll still link it

Mic: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078MHS3SC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

u/sotodefonk · 1 pointr/software

I can recommend this USB audio card, it has a noise reduction feature that works amazing. But its just for ambience noise, like wind or fans. You will need an external microphone and not your integrated one.

The also sell a microphone array to get a more directional sound, but i havent test this one. You can see what it does on the video.

u/zakabog · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Just get a decent pair of headphones that fit within your budget, then buy a cheap microphone When you buy a headset you're paying a premium for the word "gaming" and getting an inferior set of headphones than if you just spent the same amount for a decent pair of headphones. Plus since the microphone and headphones are separate, if you ever want to buy a nicer pair of headphones you can do that without having to find a full headset again.

u/aLEXANDERhsTEVENS · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Would something like this work for voice chat on fortnite?

u/Cheeseducksg · 2 pointsr/DnD

Try a conference microphone like this one.

u/daze1999 · 1 pointr/battlestations

The yeticaster definitely seems worth it since it's only an extra hundred bucks for the mic, arm, and shock mount all together. Amazon actually has it for ~$170

u/DelusionalX1 · 7 pointsr/programming

This has been on my bucket list for a while now but I'm waiting for a new wireless keyboard to get started (Chinese vendor messed up the shipment).

What I do already know is that you need a very good microphone if you don't want to have it taped to your chest all the time.
Something like this. (Might not even be good enough, see below)

u/raptor75mlt · 3 pointsr/AndroidTV

I don't know which androidtv you currently have, but you need one that has a remote with microphone built-in, then you just press a button and speak into it

Or stick this to your device

I haven't recorded anything on my mic, though my brother uses a Blue Yeti USB mic.

This is a recent song he recorded with it.

How about this as a microphone + stand combo?

u/Rad_CLAYSON · 1 pointr/gaming

Just get a pair of Sennheiser 598 and a mod mic.

r/headphones will basically say the same thing. Gaming headsets aren't the way to go

u/Joel05 · 1 pointr/headphones

Dont know why you are getting downvoted. Get a pair of RP HTF600's and a cheap microphone like this.

u/Help_fool · 1 pointr/HyperX

What About getting the QuadCasf mic?

HyperX QuadCast - USB Condenser Gaming Microphone, for PC, PS4 and Mac, Anti-Vibration Shock Mount, Four Polar Patterns, Pop Filter, Gain Control, Podcasts, Twitch, YouTube, Discord, Red LED - Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NZZZ746/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_LVPSDbZFARTSG

u/OutdoorsBlue · 1 pointr/podcasting

I really appreciate that! I'm not a techie but take pains to read stuff and understand things. Have you ever checked out Cast? Re SimpleCast, I think it costs more than Buzzsprout though.

What mic did you buy? I am looking at either one of these:

Blue Yeti pro with boom arm: https://www.amazon.ca/Blue-Microphones-Yeticaster-Professional-Microphone/dp/B078MHS3SC

Audio Technica, would get arm and pop filter too: https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT2020USB-PLUS-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B00B5ZX9FM/
