Okay. First off, he is fully grown. He doesn't need those nuts unless he is of good lineage with a good record. Here is a good rule of thumb. Neutering him will help take away the instinct to obsessively mark his territory. Additionally a male body wrap may help him stop marking and he'd have to wear it in the house except when crated.

Your dog smells that cat. He may not know what it is but he smells it.

Putting stuff where he pees just leaves you with more stuff to clean when he pees there again.

This is an issue not specifically tailored to the breed and there is a lot of good advice on Youtube which is pretty much how I've trained my dogs.

u/BorisTheZombie · 4 pointsr/sharpei

Penny! Such a pretty girl :) My pei has to wear diapers too.. We bought a few from Amazon, they're reusable doggy diapers and they've been a life saver.. Easy to put on and so easy to clean. You can either clean them in the sink or throw them in the washer. If it's something you're interested in, here's the link.. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077HR4NLX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_TGaUBbH8CY1K5

They have helped us tremendously!

So there are two options here. 1. It could be behavioral and you will probably never be able to fix it. Plus side:reusable belly bands or 2. It is a potty training issue which can be fixed with time and patience. Just like a puppy he is not allowed out of your sight, always on a leash attached to you so that if he looks like he might start to pee you can rush him outside or if you can't actively watch him (going to the store, work etc.) he is in a crate. When he marks outside he gets a reward but if you slip up and allow him to go inside, clean it up(with enzymatic cleaner like nature's miracle) and move on. Hope this helps

While you’re working on it, I recommend getting some wraps. They won’t necessarily fix the prob any quicker but can save u a lot of stress and cleanup. Good luck.

I had a medium-size mix who passed in Dec. of '17 who had this issue about 6 or 7 months before we ended up having to put her down. We went so far as to get washable diapers for her (here ) that worked very well. If your dog is getting around, eating, etc. still, this may be an option to consider. Keep in mind that fecal incontinence at this age is likely permanent, and will not improve. He may have to wear a diaper during the day, and someone should be around to change him when necessary.

With this in mind, quality of life is a consideration not just for your dog, but for you as well. My heart goes out to you.

My rescue dog does exactly this. He's old and his bladder doesn't work. So he wears diapers whenever he's in the house. I got these diapers for him and it's been amazing. The diapers offer support for his bladder and he only really has minor leaks once or twice a week. We line them with Kotex pads for extra absorbency for when we know we're going to be late coming home from work.

One of my dogs has a similar problem. We tried using crating/very frequent trips outside/rewards and he just wasn't getting it. Fortunately, we discovered belly bands - we keep one on him 100% of the time when he's 'free' in the house. We also trained him to love his crate, so we keep him there at night, when we go to work, etc.

At least until you can get the problem solved, you should consider something like the "Wegreeco Premium Dog Diapers (Female)" on amazon - this is the brand I use for my male dog (after trying several), and I've been pleased with the quality:

https://www.amazon.com/Wegreeco-Premium-Diapers-Female-Pack/dp/B017EJEV68

I add half of an incontinence pad like the one below, and I've never had any leaks:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Equate-Overnight-Ultimate-Absorbency-Pads-30-count/36717960

Edit - also, if it really is the same spot, you could just try the pee-pad training method where you get her used to peeing on the pad, then slowly move it outside.

u/abbiemays · 1 pointr/dogs

I have two dogs and my one dog does the same thing. We bought a Nest camera and watched video of him panicking a few minutes after we leave and then peeing. He cannot control it. We tried behavior modification with him, but that didn’t work. Now he takes Clomicalm and Xanax to help with his anxiety, which has helped tremendously. We also have belly bands that we put on him every day when we leave. He doesn’t pee in them every time now, but it is such a relief when he does that he did it in the band and I don’t have to clean the floor.

I'll just throw out the option of belly bands for the unhousetrained chihuahuas. Also known as "male wraps", they can be found at Petsmart/petco/Amazon. They come in washable and disposable varieties, around $10-20 bucks. Total lifesaver to save your furniture and carpets. You can line them with pads or panty liners, or the overpriced dog versions of those.

Have him wear a belly band during the day while you're gone. When we were housetraining my guy earlier this year, these were super helpful -

Just went through it with two of mine. Washable diapers were a big big help. I got mine off of amazon.

Washable crate mats were also a big help.
I would do a small load of wash everyday to keep the diapers clean. They got a little cranky with each other but a little more cuddly with the humans. After the first day or two they didn’t mind the diapers either. I did take them off when they were kenneled. Good luck it will be over soon, just watch out for loose neighborhood dogs they can come from miles around. It can also cause arguments with other dogs if you’re out for a walk.

u/schroedingersgirl · 10 pointsr/dogs

> I don't think he honestly even knows when he's peeing since he will just be walking along and doing it like he doesn't realize.

That screams neurological issue to me. I remember you said the vet checked him out for bladder/kidney/urethra issues, but has he had a neuro check? Because this sentence has me wondering about a possible spinal cord injury.

> Getting desperate and certainly don't want him to be an outside dog or rehome him, as he's perfect in every other way for our family, kids and other pets.

You need a belly band! Lots of options on Amazon. I use this one, with these pads.

u/LucidDreamer18 · 4 pointsr/Dogtraining

Are you in a position where OM is able to be transitioned away from pads now? That might help to break the overall habit in your younger dog, but I can understand if it isn't feasible.

You're going to have to go back to Step 1 in potty training. You'll have to keep YM crated or leashed to you so he can't mark all over the house (those "drive by" pees are marking behavior). A belly band might be a good investment, too.

Go outside with him for a while, and throw a party like he cured cancer whenever he pees outside, and keep him supervised/crated inside.

u/StubbyToenails · 2 pointsr/puppy101

Surgical onesies or diaper when he's supervised and a cone when he isn't. Mine got used to the cone by the third day and loved digging with it

u/librarychick77 · 1 pointr/Dogtraining

Hmm. You could either invest in a belly band or an appropriately sized jacket. The belly bands are cheaper I bet...but chances are good the dog could use the exercise too.

u/siriuslywinchester · 1 pointr/CasualConversation

oh my gosh. i have no idea but how cute would that be. i'm going to google this.

oh my gosh, they actually do!

u/almost_a_squib · 1 pointr/dogs

No problem! I prefer these ones. They stay in place really well and are super absorbent. My friend's dogs wear them every day and have never had a leak. I've had clients who used other brands that used inserted pads and had issues with leaking (mainly because the pad would move around and/or didn't cover the area appropriately).

u/switch_bitch · 4 pointsr/sex

You can buy disposable bed liners, or the ones for pet house training might be cheaper or easier to buy.

Suspenders! I'm serious...someone posted a pic in a group I'm in for Frosted Faces Foundation, and everyone copied it because it works so well! If you're not crafty (I certainly am not!) you can buy a version of them online. Here's one version on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/FunnyDogClothes-Diaper-Reusable-Washable-Suspenders/dp/B01771YQO0/ref=asc_df_B01771YQO0/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=251404331421&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12030915864692530950&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9031550&hvtargid=pla-456809728701&psc=1

Belly bands don't deal with #2's. I use them for my in home boarding for dogs that like to mark. Here it is

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0183H0YZC/ref=pd_aw_sim_sbs_199_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=47FQC6758EXE5RX45514

I don't use them long term though. Just when I have the dogs in my home

The difference is pharmacies have generics of general popular items, there's only so many of them and the risk of the items not being purchased at one point or another is relatively slim. However Amazon is taking it to the next level and going beyond stuff like batteries, electronics cables, and getting into making oddly specific targeted objects like a bocce ball set, specific refrigerator water filters for a variety of brands, Male dog wraps, and tons of other fairly random things that would be considered risky products unless you have gathered the data from other sellers over time. Then they swoop in and capture that market by undercutting and promoting their brand over their competitors.

Unlike normal stores, the burden of the sale is placed on the seller rather than Amazon. Unlike Target/Walmart/Costco/CVS/Walgreens and etc, they don't purchase the items for their inventory to sell. Rather they have the sellers ship it to Amazon and when sold, they ship it assuming they do Fulfillment by Amazon give the money minus their cut or have you ship it out and then you get the cut. All the risk is on the seller if it doesn't sell. The seller won't ever see a dime even if the inventory is no longer in their hands and is in Amazon's instead. It's this that makes it different from the standard generic products in local stores, at least the other manufacturers still get money for their products even if it isn't sold to consumers.

This doesn't help your rug, but I really appreciated washable belly bands when my dog was having problems holding it in the house. This kind of thing: https://www.amazon.com/Teamoy-Reusable-Diapers-Washable-10-13Waist/dp/B01LAH88WI

I used the following belly bands for my elderly IG and re-used them for my IG foster puppy.

Mkono Male Dog Belly Band Wraps Washable Diapers for Small and Medium Dogs(3 Pack) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0748B989V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_WD45BbMGPZ5YQ

I was really happy with these, they caught everything with no leaks until I removed the band and are re-usable and machine washable. With my elderly IG, he was on direuetics that made it really hard to hold his bladder and with my foster puppy, he was new to potty training, so I'd take him out every hour, but in-between he'd wear a band and if I saw him take a pee-stance, he'd go right outside and I'd wash the band. Kept my carpets pee-free while he was learning.
