PLEASE DO NOT BUY A CAGE! No cage is big enough for a rabbit, not to mention for a Flemish Giant!!!!

And if she is in cage now - not free roam with a cage being just her home-base, but actually in a cage you need to cage it ASAP!!!!

A bunny needs at least 4 by 2 ft of free run space in its enclosure; to that add space taken up by the litter tray, hidy house, and hay feeder, so literally NONE of the store-bought cages would ever be good for a bunny (even if advertised as such)! Bunnies need lots of space, attention and exercise. They are much happier and healthier when the have space to run around. Also a bunny will need at least two hours every day to explore outside of his enclosure to stay happy. Initially you can supervise, but as the bunny is litter trained less supervision will be required.

Try some ideas below:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MU2F556/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - fantastic xpen that will be larger and work for bunnies who are jumpers and like to escape

https://www.amazon.com/MidWest-Foldable-Metal-Exercise-Playpen/dp/B000H8YTJI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1549491467&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=xpen&psc=1 - another great xpen, which is cheaper but not as tall and also smaler

Or you could try this dog crate which would be even easier (be sure to get XXL) https://www.chewy.com/midwest-solutions-series-xx-large/dp/102274

If you have room you could even attach the xpen to the dog crate like this using zipties and put the litter box and hay feeder in there plus hidy house, and he will have the xpen to run in which would be awesome...

Or use NIC grids like this https://www.amazon.com/LANGRIA-Storage-Shelving-Organization-Bookcase/dp/B06XR3PMXK?ref_=w_bl_hsx_s_ho_web_13643573011. It would be quite easy actually... see this video on how to build a cage with them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzS82KZ7ADo

For flooring:

You can use a thick plastic tablecloth - you'll put this on the floor beneath the pen. It will be easy to clean, and protects your carpet from pee/droppings just in case. Over the tablecloth you will place a thick blanket that the bun can run on. Anchor outside pen edges so the bun can't dig it up. You can wash the blanket and wipe the plastic under it. You bun is happy and floor is safe.

Also try this indoor/outdoor rug - it is easy to clean, inexpensive, and due to a tight weave hard to chew.

I love Kong brand. Kong has toys that are really tough to chew through, not to mention the original Kong you can stuff treats into is pretty much indestructible. My puppy had an abscessed tooth and she couldn't chew anything for a few weeks so Kongs saved our sanity, not to mention this licky mat. You can smear peanut butter on it, soft dog food, spray cheese etc. It was a lifesaver. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GJWCJST/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_j7WWDbZV9ASNZ

We got the Amazon basics crate and it works well. We also got an Amazon basics play pen that has worked wonders https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0758CTVVR/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_j3WWDbSB2W7AJ

I don't have a brand name, but make sure you get dog beds where the cover zips off for easy cleaning. I did not do that, and it has been interesting trying to potty train with a bed you can't easily clean.

I got a pack of bully sticks on Amazon recently that have been wonderful. Bully sticks are a lifesaver when you just need your pup to sit down and stop bugging you for 15 mins so you can fold a load of laundry. Bully sticks are very expressive so these were a good deal https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07M93Q3CP/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_B-WWDb43SZH8P

I also recommend a martingale collar. My puppy was terrified of going outside when we first got her so she would pull out of her collar and run away. If was stressful. Martingale collars tighten as the dog pulls so they can't pull out of them

I hesitate to recommend a camera, because after the second week of using it, it was really more trouble than it was worth. Yeah, you can check on your puppy while you're at work, but if he's crying or whining you can't do anything about it but feel upset.. If you're interested, we used Wyze cams. You can get them on Amazon, they are super cheap and easy to use. I just recommend using them for the first few weeks only, otherwise your work will suffer like mine did.

Edit: I almost forgot to mention Nature's Miracle, the patron saint of carpet and floors! It eliminates the enzymes in urine so your dog doesn't keep peeing in a particular place in your house because it smells like pee. Buy stock in this company. It is that important.

Good luck!

I’m also moving and have two cats. I haven’t tried this yet, but I found a play pen on amazon with great reviews after a friend of mine recommended I give them some more space than their little crate. Ruff 'n Ruffus Portable Foldable Pet Playpen + Carrying Case & Collapsible Travel Bowl (Large (36" x 36" x 23")) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071RY3NF9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_MgGzDbPV7DQ2Y

I’m planning on using the play pen for feeding so they get used to it and relate it to something good (they love eating), add their favorite blanket & some toys.

u/KyleG · 1 pointr/sanantonio

If you have a little cash, go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy a couple rolls of this rug/carpet stuff. Looks kinda like what you might have by the pedals in your car, except black and rubber on bottom. Really cheap. I think in the flooring area, but forget where exactly we got them.

Then on Amazon buy one of these http://www.amazon.com/Pet-Trex-Premium-Quality-Exercise/dp/B0052HH5UE/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1377990277&sr=8-4&keywords=pet+pen

My wife and I have been through this all before. Couple very happy rabbits at our (not totally destroyed) house. PM me any questions you might have if you ever have any. I love rabbits and love helping people give them the best care they can.

Congrats on the new golden :) Our golden is 5 months old now and the time is flying by! Take lots of pictures - they grow up crazy fast and lose the rolly-polly puppyness pretty quickly.

But to answer your question, we got:

  • adjustable collar (we got the 10-16" collar and haven't outgrown it yet at 5 months old)
  • poop bags + dispenser
  • food/water bowls
  • lightweight leash for when it was small and leather leash for when it was bigger
  • crate + exercise pen (see our setup here)
  • toys of different textures
  • treats of different textures
  • Redbarn bully strips (cow ears with flavoring, keeps them focused on chewing appropriate items)
  • medium puppy sized kong
  • large breed puppy food
  • nail clippers
  • toothbrush/doggy toothpaste
  • ear cleanser (they get pretty dirty)
  • way more Nature's Miracle than you think is necessary
  • nametag with your contact info

We didn't get a dog bed for a few months because every time we put a blanket or whatever in her crate, she'd pull it out and then sleep on the smooth floor of the crate. We did get some small rubber door mats to place at strategic areas (in the kitchen and near the dining room table) so when we were cooking we could say "go to your mat" and she'd go lay down on the mat and stay out of the way (obviously this required treats to reinforce, but now when we start prepping food she automatically goes to the mat).

But I'd say the key was the exercise pen. It allowed her to not be stuck in her crate while we were at work, but was adjustable as we wanted to allow her more freedom during housetraining. Eventually we progressed from the small area attached to the crate to just blocking off the kitchen from the rest of the house, and now we only use it once in a while. Prevented a lot of frustration.

Good luck! I'm so glad we got a golden retriever - she was an adorable puppy and is pretty well behaved at 5 months. It's all about consistency and positive reinforcement training.

Also puppy proof your house - we've lost 2 phone chargers so far to those teeth, and a pair of eyeglasses.
u/ardvarkk · 2 pointsr/AustralianCattleDog

Have you considered getting a larger play pen as opposed to a kennel, like this or something? I know people do kennel dogs for that long regularly, but I didn't like to with mine at least once they were old enough to trust through the night.

Also, are you looking at a puppy, or potentially an adult rescue? With your schedule, an adult would be a better fit I think.

Edit - Also, every dog is different. My ACD is more than happy to be lazy and nap through ~80% of the daytime, as long as she gets some good solid play for the other 20%. My Border Collie is another story... I think he would play until he was no longer physically able to move if I let him

u/AppleSpicer · 1 pointr/Rabbits

I'm getting my buns a friend for the first time and the rescue shelter rep recommended a large play pen like this. It's less expensive than a massive cage and gives them a little more feeling of freedom. I've even seen them even cheaper on ebay. 4 feet high should be good if they aren't really jumpy but if they manage to hop over you can secure a sheet on top. They come in colors too. I got a pink one :3

They also told me that they've seen a happy pair with a flemish giant and a little dwarf but that it's good to get a partner around the same age and energy level.

u/amberlynns · 1 pointr/Rabbits

A rabbit cooped up in a cage/pen all day will not be a healthy or happy rabbit. A lot of people use a combination of pen and cage so that their bun has a safe area as well as a good size play area. Pens usually end up being a better option overall as they're cheaper or equal price as a standard cage for TONS more space. I have two of these 24" pens and a 42" pen for my one bun who loved to jump.

You don't need to keep it free range per say, but providing adequate space for play and exercise is ideal and recommended by all. The more space you can offer on a 24/7 basis the better.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/Rabbits

I just upgraded to this pen, and I LOVE it. Holy crap. I'm a college student, so my buns travel from school to home with me on a monthly basis, and this one is so freaking awesome! It's super easy to assemble and take apart, and it's insanely sturdy. I have two escape artists, and they haven't escaped this one yet. Best part, is that this particular bran has standard sizing and expander panels.

I haven't personally used linoleum, because my rex is a prissy princess, and he refuses to walk on non-carpeted surfaces haha. But it seems to work really well for most people :)

u/yyaaaaaasss · 3 pointsr/Dogtraining

I would suggest that you definitely keep up the crate training. Are you putting treats in his crate when he goes in? Sometimes it's best to associate the crate with these types of positive reinforcements so he is more inclined to think the crate is a great place. If he has separation anxiety, I heard this heartbeat toy works quite well for young puppies.

My other suggestion is, the meantime, while you are crate training him, why don't you get one of these playpens if you have to leave him in the kitchen. That way he is at least away from the walls and in an enclosed space. If he starts to chew the playpen, you could spray it with this bitter spray which really helped my dog when he was teething.

Good luck!!

u/Annalyte · 2 pointsr/dogs

That's gonna be a handful, but I'm sure they can handle it! I highly recommend purchasing something like this playpen so that when they start being more mobile, they can stay out of trouble and the mom can get some rest when she doesn't want to be near them. Also, using an old tablet with google hangouts running pointed on the puppers is good, so that they can be checked on when your friends are away. If their vet thinks they can do it, I'm sure they can and will have a very rewarding experience.

u/Ephemeral_Halcyon · 5 pointsr/ferrets

The playpen. I spent so fucking long trying to rig play areas for him just to save a few bucks. I attached it to the front of his cage and use flattened cardboard boxes to keep him from climbing (cage bars are horizontal). It's pretty big. If you have room, buy two and you can attach them. Mine loves his ferret ball too (big plastic ball with 3 holes in it you can attach tunnels to).

Put your money toward good food. Look at the ferret kibble chart and buy 2-3 to mix from the top 2 sections. I'd stay away from Wysong. Don't trust them any more. Wellness CORE and Natures Variety Instinct raw boost are great. They sell them both on Amazon for the same price they are at the pet store here. 1 bag of each lasts a single ferret a couple/few months.

As for things not to waste money on: the ferretlax stuff-- they will eat plain vaseline just fine. Ferretone gives mine diarrhea every time. No need for a crap ton of toys-- throw down an old pillow with a case and a few fleece blankets or old tee shirts they can burrow around in.

We drove with our three cats from CT to AZ about three years ago.

We got a Pet Ego Tube - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007OASY2/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And a Play Pen - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002ABKBQA/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

In the middle of each day's drive we stopped and set up a disposable litter box in the pen and let them have some fresh air.

We also gave them wet food, which they had a bit of. We had one kitty that was sick at the time, so she stayed in a carrier upfront with us, and the two boys hung out in the tube even though there would have been a lot of space even with all three cats in the tube.

Motel 6's nationwide accept pets. You will want to keep them in the bathroom or in the tube/playpen as if there's a tight area they can squirm into, they will.

They didn't eat or use the litter box much throughout the entire trip. They meowed for about 20 miles, but they quieted down each day.

Other than that we used calming spray before bringing them in the room at night.

We stopped by in Columbus, OH, St. Louis, Missouri, and Amarillo, TX. The fourth day we were in our apartment and it took about a week for the kitties to mellow out.

Because we were driving the car out anyway, we didn't look into airfare. With one kitty sick, we weren't into the idea of giving medication to calm her. I don't know the details about flying. If we move somewhere without a car, I'd look into it further. From what I remember, individual carriers with the names and destination. They are kept below seats in the luggage area that has some more environmental controls for air and temperature. You can't fully sedate, or they won't take the animal. They do some sort of responsive test, but I don't know/remember the details.

Best of luck with the move!

You can teach a dog to respect a fence even if they could easily jump it. As long as there is a physical barrier that the pup can see they can learn to respect it.

My golden learned to respect decorative garden fencing that wasn't even a foot high.

For a lab I would use something a little more substantial since it's also going to be the perimeter fence. Something like:

This kind of fence

Would be fine until the teenage months when your pup might push the boundaries and maybe even jump the fence or push it over.

In my opinion one shouldn't leave a young dog unsupervised in the yard so you'll have lots of opportunity to reinforce proper behaviour when it comes to the fencing. Never lift or carry your pup over the fence. Never encourage your pup to go to the other side of the fence. If you do the idea will form in their head that they can go back there.

If they've never gone there they have a much stronger chance of never trying to go there.

u/TransFatty · 8 pointsr/Rabbits

This rabbit can't be left in the wild, so good on you for rescuing it! Someone dumped it for sure.

If you're going to keep the rabbit, it can be housed in an x-pen. A rabbit this size can't be kept in a cage or hutch; that's too small and it might become aggressive.

x-pen:

https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Foldable-Metal-Exercise-Fence/dp/B0758CTVVR/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?keywords=x-pen&qid=1564975010&s=gateway&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUE4U1FUMkhLREpMRVAmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAzNDk2MTgxQkVTVFlHUUhCNFBSJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA0ODg5NTUyN05CQklSNUVaVko2JndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

Rabbits must have hay at all times. You'll have to provide it with a constant, endless supply of high quality timothy hay. This is their main diet. The links I'm sending you are examples of course - you can source your hay from anywhere, it just has to be good stuff. This rabbit looks like it's old enough that it doesn't need alfalfa hay.

https://www.amazon.com/Small-Pet-Select-Cutting-Timothy/dp/B00WEJA7QC/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?keywords=small%2Bpet%2Bselect%2Btimothy%2Bhay&qid=1564975102&s=gateway&sr=8-2-spons&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFIQUtTUTlNTVJJVUwmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAwMDM3MzYyQTRONFVWUjNZTVBZJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAzNzU1NDIxQVJJUDgwVkZFMUJFJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ&th=1

It can drink water from a bowl. I got my rabbit just a regular, big heavy crock like for dogs.

Rabbits need a litter box. Not the triangle kind though. You put the hay in the litter box, and the rabbit will naturally pee and poop there. I use this for their litter because it's cheap:

https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/tractor-supply-pine-pellet-stall-bedding-40-lb

Rabbit care is highly specialized! They are not easy maintenance pets but I happen to love 'em to bits, they have such funny little personalities.

Rubbing chin means she likes you. :)

Please get her fixed! It is very important for her health and behaviors.

Take a look at the link below to help you interpret various bunny language:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ruK6AXVLhiM

Also, if she’s in a store bought cage, maybe consider enlarging her space to allow for binkies and other behaviors :) an Xpen is the minimum size a rabbit should live in, those back legs are long and need space!: this is an example

I think that's big enough for nights and unsupervised time. We have something like this that Novy used as a run when he was little. We got a second one and connected them together and that's what he uses when we're gone during the day now. He still goes up to his cage (2ftx5ft?) at night. When we're there he has roam of a few rooms and occasionally the upstairs.

We use cable wrap like this to cover ground cords. He's chewed on them a few times but there's no damage. As long as they're against the wall they'll be fine. For my computer desk I screwed a postal mail tube underneath it and split if length wise to stick the power strip in so it's up out of the way; as a bonus it looks better too!

For the bookshelf, we use gating that looks like the stuff from the pen I linked to above for temporary 'keep bun out' areas like that (in my case the entertainment center).

[Edit: Updated the cable wrap link, used the wrong one initially!]

u/lambhearts · 2 pointsr/Dogtraining

My concern here is that you have a dog who has growled and snapped consistently, and you're still letting the children around her, without doing any training. This is setting the dog up to fail, and setting the children up to get hurt. Kids that little should never be around a dog unless it's completely handled and trained for small children prior to the meet. Until you have this under control, you need to keep them separated, except for 100% supervised, controlled sessions. Something like an indoor pen would be a great solution, so she can still be around the family, but safely contained.

I would really recommend seeing a professional trainer, who's dealt with aggressive dogs before. Even if you only see them once or twice, they'll be able to give you tips specifically for your dog and situation, and get you jump-started on a plan to handle this as soon as possible. This is the best way to keep an accident from happening.

u/anxious_onion · 2 pointsr/cats

yeah, i would because the kitten i'm assuming is much smaller in size. I would only have them together at short intervals and gradually increase that time. As with the pouncing– I put my kitten in one of these that I had: https://www.amazon.com/Parkland-Pet-Portable-Foldable-Removable/dp/B01B37WUXI/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=cat+tent&qid=1570908470&sr=8-5 with my cat outside and vice versa. This way their interaction was safer if the cat decided to swat the kitten. i also recommend watching "thecatdaddy"'s youtube video on cat introductions if you haven't already!

u/csmith2019 · 3 pointsr/ferrets

They’re very similar but the difference is they the metal bars are horizontal on the critter nation and vertical on the ferret nation. The horizontal bars allow the ferrets to climb up it which is not ideal and can potentially be dangerous.

The best playpen I’ve seen is from clearly loved pets but it is very expensive. I’ve used the ones you can buy on amazon that are like plastic rectangles that clip together. They don’t work and have killed other ferrets in the past. Mine learned how to push their heads through until the clips popped, it’s happened to other people that it crushed the ferrets neck though. I have this one now which isn’t exactly open and what I would like but it works for temporary situations Parkland Pet Portable Foldable Playpen Exercise Kennel Dogs Cats Indoor/Outdoor Removable Mesh Shade Cover, Medium https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E7PHXR6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_6iuIDbE8T3EQV

this https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01B37WUXI/ref=ya_st_dp_

That will be fine for containment when you are there to supervise but IMHO, any pup is going to quickly realize that he can chew right through it. It's not serious containment for when you are out of the house.

I'm slow in allowing my pups to have freedom when I'm not there. They start out in crates, then move on to wire x-pens (I have the 36" version of this: https://www.amazon.com/Homes-Pets-Foldable-Exercise-Pen/dp/B000H8YTJI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497193537&sr=8-1&keywords=x-pen ), and then the gated kitchen and finally the whole house.

I'd suggest getting an exercise pen to put around the tree to keep it out of reach! You can get them pretty cheap, like this one on Amazon - ex pen

Not sure if it's the same... a friend has one made my Oxgord that looks close to this .. they make everything... even car parts :) This one on amazon.

Lots of treats. My boys' favorites are raw nuts (walnuts in particular) and bits of fig bars. Climbing toys. You might also want to look into something like this:

Which you can use to establish an outside play area.

Oh! I thought you meant poop guards in the cage!
The trim in the room is a different story entirely!
Yes- you are correct. The paint is extremely toxic.
We use a playpen to control where in the room they can access.

Does your pup have free reign over the house? My wife and I have raised two puppies and have had the most success by limiting access as part of their training. Our Standard Schnauzer spent the first few months with us, when we were out of the house, in the living room in an X-Pen. We use this one: http://www.amazon.com/IRIS-Plastic-Exercise-Containment-Panels/dp/B0083ZWZ2K/ref=sr_1_24?ie=UTF8&qid=1409243011&sr=8-24&keywords=x+pen, but your pup will probably eat it.

It is quite possible your pup doesn't know what to do when he's alone with so much room. It's a common misconception that keeping your dog in a room while you're away is "mean" to the dog. In stages, we gave our dog more room while we were away and he adjusted perfectly. No accidents whatsoever.

We have cameras set up in our home and I can tell you that our dog literally sleeps all day in one room. Sometimes two. That's it.

Your pup may also require a lot more exercise prior to being left alone. Our Standard Schnauzer, who is now almost 3 years old, get's on average a 1.5 mile walk and 15 minutes of running in our backyard, chasing frisbees and other fetch toys EVERY MORNING. And this is a 42 lbs. dog. He gets an hour walk every evening too.

Now, some dogs can have actual anxiety issues that may require working with a behaviorist and perhaps medication. The most important thing, IMHO, is understanding your dog's particular needs. Try limiting the space, maybe set up a webcam and keep a log of his behavior, and try more exercise.

A friend of mine was in a similar situation with her small yard and Maltese. She ended up buying pet fence panels that can be strung together to any length or configuration you need.

My brother has a dog that is an escape artist. She has found a multitude of ways to escape the fence and gets in fights with the neighbor's dog. They finally had to resort to a wireless containment system. Rather than have to bury a cable that shocks the dog when they cross it, this is a fence that goes off when the dog gets too far away from the base receiver. So say you set the base by the back door, the dog can go up to 90 feet away from the base before being buzzed.

I use a puppy playpen. My dwarves have never been able to chew through it but my Syrian would be able to.
