It's this one. It's basically one of the cheapest ones out there are still pretty fantastic. There's virtually zero upkeep. Just make sure you blow the condensation out when you're done or if it starts getting very moist while playing (there's a water key on the bottom). This keeps the reeds from rusting.

It's not nearly as touchy about moisture as wooden recorders. Speaking of tenors, which model do you have? My wife has a Yamaha YRT304B and it's serviceable, though I find the keys a bit gummy which makes low F a pain at times. On the bright side, I find that the half-holing is a lot more forgiving on the large recorders, especially for A and above. Virtually ever soprano I've played gets very finicky, particularly for A and above. Literally a millimeter of difference in thumb seems to make the difference between nailing and squeaking, though E-G are fine.

We're going to be at a trade show in a few weeks and try some out, and maybe even look at a bass. Depending on prices and quality, we'd probably to buy a full consort of the same manufacturer if they are consistent enough.

It is a question of quality. A melodica can be created as a toy, or as an instrument. Kind of like the difference between $.99 harmonica toys and actual instrument harmonicas.

An instrument melodica is actually harder to find than you'd think.
Look for well known brands of actual instrument companies.

Youtube. I just started learning the melodica myself and youtube has lots of vidoes for learning the melodica, or pretty much anything else you might be interested in.

This is the melodica I purchased. I like it.

Its a Kalimba or Hand Harp. Yours has a huge acoustic chamber to make it hella louder. I have one that looks like this https://www.amazon.com/Kalimba-Thumb-Piano-Tunable-Coconut/dp/B00Q5EWGV6/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1469079439&sr=8-6&keywords=kalimba

Cajon (percussion)

Melodica

Ocarina

Kalimba

Beginner violin

Tin Whistle

Recorder

A lot of these may seem simple to play (or not "real" instruments), but proficiency in even these type of instruments is good. And as someone has already said, buying used opens up more possibilities.

TIL accordians are worth two BBC licence fees.

That being said, if he's playing it on U-tube I'm happy to chip in.

If it's this one...

Apelila 17 Key Kalimba Thumb Piano, Solid Mahogany Wood Body Finger Piano with Tune Hammer,Carry Bag,Pickup,Key Stickers(Green) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HQNPWYP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_8fblDb8DSBAJK

...it has good reviews (though that doesn't always mean much). I was initially concerned when putting in just the brand because they (possibly) make a weird selection of products and don't specialize in instruments. But it's mahogany and carbon steel, which I think is the same as the steel ore, so I believe it should be comparable to others. If you get it, will you post a video? I'm very curious!

u/WeAreTheVGPS · 1 pointr/classicalmusic

This is the one I have. I guarantee there are better ones, but it was cheap. It's held up well over the few years I've had it.

u/JazzTheRemedy · 1 pointr/kalimba

Sure I'd let you know. It's on my cart but I don't have a reply from the seller yet.
By the way speaking of oddly shaped kalimba's have you tried the Tom kalimba? I think you've posted a photo on your article kalimba buying guide about waterfall shaped holes.

I've been seeing a few reviews on this. Few difference I have noticed though is the "landscape" shape, metal bridge, and bag-lile handle. 😆

Get an M'bira

If you don't know, it's just about the most approachable and affordable musical instrument there is.

According to the review on Amazon, you'll have to tune it when you get it--I'm sure if you can't do this on your own, a local music store would do that for you maybe for 20 dollars or so.

Ugly face

$18k accordion its a steal at that price!

Thanks for the fun contest ♡

Looks like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Rise-Sawtooth-ST-RISE-MEL-32-BLUE-Piano-Melodica/dp/B01K8KRY1O

But maybe not since this model has a name on it and the one in the video doesn't.

u/roddouche · 1 pointr/videos

I got mine in an irish specialty store. This is sorta what it looked like. I do not remember paying that much for it though.

Did someone say polka? https://amzn.com/B071CL3G77/

u/YourBrainOnJazz · 2 pointsr/piano

I would NOT recomend getting this. This is simply a USB controller, not a great instrument to learn and play on. I would recomend a casio CDP series or a Yamaha p series. Those are both great and affordable keybaords for beginners and they have full 88 weighted keys. In the mean time while you are saving up money for a keyboard, you could always get something like a melodica. Its only 30 bucks, and its definitely an instrument that’s gaining more traction in mainstream music. With it, you can learn fingerings, theory, and chords that all can be directly applied to piano. Give it a shot and if you like it, then buy a piano, but if you dont like it, then its just 30$. Many people may scoff at this suggestion, because usually think melodica is just a toy... Well... someone forgot to tell that to John Batiste, cuz he's been KILLING it on the Melodica every week night on The Late Show with Steven Colbert.
