I don't think this meets all of your criteria, and finding a way to actually play it might be a bit of a pain - but Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles for the Gamecube was one of my favorite co-op RPG games back in the day. It's got a beautiful, Gaelic atmosphere with lovely voice-over narration. The story is not intense, but it's there - it's more about building a world than it is about the plot, I think.

You can have up to four players, but there's not much in the way of consequences, it's not dark-fantasy (more high-fantasy, I think), no top down camera, and character advancement is relatively simple.

If you know about this game already, you probably know about how difficult it is to play. Each player needs a gameboy advance to use as a controller...I think an SP works too, but I'm not 100% sure. Then you'll need one of these for each player too: http://www.amazon.com/Link-Cable-Game-Boy-Advance-Gamecube/dp/B0000E5U6M

Similar to a DS, you keep track of some stats, a map, and other things on the GBA, using it as a second screen. You also get letters from your characters' family and other private events on the GBA screen. Otherwise it's just a controller - kind of gimmicky, but they did a few interesting things with it I guess.

Check out some youtube videos of gameplay if any of that catches your interest. The world is a lot of fun, and I think it has a unique style that is worth at least a glance.

  1. Soldering for the 101 mod is super simple, got it right on first try when it was my first time soldering.

  2. Repro screen in my unit works great, some people swear by the originals but I can't stomach the idea of ripping apart a perfectly good SP. Bought mine here. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00L42ZIOQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_p0y-AbNPMV7S0

  3. Previous experience shouldn't be too much of an issue, GBA internals are very simple and this mod is a fairly good first project in my opinion.

Dunno about locally, but you can get it from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Link-Cable-Game-Boy-Advance-Gamecube/dp/B0000E5U6M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1348076137&sr=8-1&keywords=Game+boy+GameCube+cable

(Be sure to order the $8.88 one with fulfillment by Amazon!)

If you have Prime, you can get it on Friday for free, or tomorrow for $4. You can start a free Amazon Prime trial to get it on time.

Won't be able to try for a while, I need to get Crystal's battery repaired (willing to bet that Blue is dead as well, will know by tomorrow)

If I can trade Seadra/Porygon/Scyther/Onix/Slowpoke/Poliwhirl to Blue with held items and then send them right back then that'd be awesome and quite surprising. *Nevermind what I wrote earlier, I just found out my GBA link cable won't work but Amazon sells a multi-GB cable which connects to GB/pocket/color/advance which should let me trade between RBYGSC as long as I find a 2nd working Game Boy to hook up with my GBASP: http://www.amazon.com/GBC-Player-Game-Link-Cable-Boy/product-reviews/B00GKL905O/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_paging_btm_2?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=0&sortBy=recent&pageNumber=2#R3OAYSXAI959AP Hopefully the positive reviews are honest and not just written by $hill$, either way it's only 10 bucks

...actually I just booted up Blue and there's a file from 12 years ago that still works(!!!) Even has a Mew caught via the encounter-any glitch...Hopefully the file is still intact by tomorrow, the Crystal battery worked for a few hours before dying so I'm not exactly out of the woods yet.

Can you really trade Gen1 pokemon with held items via Time Capsule as long as they don't have any gen2 attacks, though? Still find that hard to believe, even though I've known about Twisted Spoon Kadabra, Light Ball Pikachu, etc since Gold and Silver came out

u/MyOtherCarIsEpona · 2 pointsr/patientgamers

This thing is one of the best lights you can get for the vanilla GBA. Kinda heavy but super bright.

u/ComfortablyMumm · 1 pointr/Gameboy

I'd recommend the GPA SP. Try to get the backlit 101 model, but if the price is a limitation, the 001 frontlit model isn't too bad. As others have said, the SP will give you access to way more games, and having a lit screen is nearly a necessity for me nowadays. As for the form factor, you can always get a grip for it that helps improve the ergonomics.
Here's the one I have, and I really like it (you can probably get it cheaper on eBay): https://www.amazon.com/Gameboy-Advance-Handy-Dual-Grip-Easier/dp/B002R9OXS2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1498231466&sr=8-1&keywords=gba+sp+grip

u/Kiraisuki · 2 pointsr/Gameboy

I don't have a 3D model of the battery cover, but I do know that this battery is reliable. I've got one and I get 7 hours of play on varying brightnesses and volumes with my EZ Flash IV in my AGS-101.

u/AudioMan612 · 3 pointsr/headphones

Yeah, I've seen those modifications myself. There are also mods to put them in the classic GBA, which is really cool for the comfort factor.

I want to see if I can find a grip for my DS Lite, as I have one of these on my GBA SP, and the system incredibly comfortable.

u/ImKindaHighBut · 1 pointr/Gameboy

You could always go third-party, just make sure you check reviews to make sure whatever battery you get isn't going to blow up or just work like ass.

Always gotta rely on the peeps that purchased before you, lol. They're good people!

edit: This one on amazon seems to have quite the reputation!

u/Yung_Elon · 2 pointsr/Gameboy

Came with this kit, which in retrospect is probably not great quality:

TOMSIN MOD LCD Backlight Kit 32... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GLR6N49?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Ordered new ones off ebay and “retromodding.com” so hoping I will have better luck. Anywhere that sells them that is definitively the best in your experience?

u/A_lost_10mm_socket · 1 pointr/Gameboy

I ordered two different cables.

This says it's for GBC, but also says "☑Notice: Fit for GBC / GBP / GBL only, not for GBA / GBA SP. " Since I will be playing on GBA consoles that's a worry...but I also got this GBA specific cable. So one of those is bound to work. Hopefully.

u/Zirac88 · 1 pointr/Gameboy

Thanks for the help! Other than my 3DS, I've never heard any clicks coming from any of my systems, aside from the DS I mentioned in my post. So I just wanted to be sure!

Otherwise, do you have any recommended brands for a battery? From what I'm seeing on Amazon, some have mixed reviews, and others have generally positive reviews, such as this one. I don't seem to have the right size screwdriver to check the battery, and something like this comes with one, but I worry about getting a bad battery. From some reddit posts I found, users were saying DS batteries could also be used, but I don't want to damage the system at all somehow.

Thanks again for your help!

If this is really just a matter of handling the system, there are clip on grips that greatly improve the ergonomics for us big handed folk.
I think this is the one I have: Gameboy Advance Sp Handy Dual Grip for Easier Play https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002R9OXS2

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/gaming

Good save, all you need now is one of these it'd feel like its brand new.

u/olivverr_ · 1 pointr/Gamecube

Yeah, I've heard third party GBA to GameCube cables don't generally work all that well. I think it has something to do with only transferring data one way?

If you go through the reviews, a lot of people who bought the cable on Amazon had the same problem: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/reviews/B00G2F1N80/ref=cm_cr_dp_mb_top?ie=UTF8

I'd recommend buying a used OEM one on eBay! It should cost about $15 or so.

u/Mennenth · 3 pointsr/SteamControllerMods

I dont remember where I read it, but iirc someone at some point mentioned that either the nintendo gba or joy con rubber fits. I dont have measurements so I cant confirm though.

Not much help, but its something. It cheap enough I'd be willing to try if/when my A button "broke" (though thats honestly highly unlikely given my use habits of the sc of putting everything on the touch pads), but I'm obviously not gonna ask you to take the risk to confirm.

u/MrCrono666 · 3 pointsr/Gameboy

You could use something like this and wrap your system in a clean micro fiber cloth. It'll protect the hell outta it.

You should also be able to use any 3DS case. I use the Mario bros one to protect my modded DMG, I wrap it in a cloth as well within it. Also I have 3 games - 2 on the other side of the flap and 1 inside the system.

u/THUNDARPAIG · 2 pointsr/Gameboy

Yeah I would second that - Just order a new shell on Amazon/Ebay (does not have to be Pikachu). I just re-shelled an SP today and it's way easier than a DS I can tell you that.

Here's what you'll want - https://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Nintendo-Advance-included-Game-Boy/dp/B00B5QP54E/ref=sr_1_3?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1468802410&sr=1-3&keywords=gameboy+advance+sp+shell

I bought two official cables (used but they hold up really really well) and one third party cable which was fine but the connections were incredibly tight and a pain to work with.

If I did it again, I might use a four way link cable if I wanted to save money.

u/Nenotriple · 2 pointsr/gaming

I have a 3.5mm adapter, it's pretty slick being able to play the sound on a big speaker setup. The GBA had some good music, and high quality sounds that were totally ruined by the tinny speaker.

Amazon has Gameboy shells and there's a few tutorials available just takes a bit of work to get everything set

u/FakePseudonym · 1 pointr/nuzlocke

Unfortunately, it is impossible to trade between DS's. However, you can buy some used Gameboys (around $20) and a link cable (around $5) on Amazon. Hope this helps.

u/PsychologicalMonitor · 2 pointsr/AnimalCrossing
u/WFlash01 · 5 pointsr/Gameboy

That's a Game Boy Advance cable. Different protocols and different pins render it incompatible with Game Boy/Color games, you're going to need to buy a different one.

I recommend this.

u/meandthestereo · 1 pointr/gameswap

Yup, that's what I be saying. Yeh I can ship to that address. Is two OK? I gotta tell you though, I'm trying to find the legit "nintendo" brand ones, but its a little difficult to know for sure until you get the product. Do you think this one is legit?

this is similar bundle i got, though i didn't have the new gba screen and both the connectors. This should be all you need to do the work plus a soldering iron to solder the screen power wire to the board.

If you look at the customer reviews people have stood by it. Some people said the was dead on arrival, but I'm curious to know if they hooked the screen up right on the board.
