I'd say something hands-on and very pracitcal like a telescope or if you're willing to shell out a lot of cash (or share with your sibling) an astrophotography camera lens (dunno what the cheapest one is) or this https://www.amazon.com/d/Garden-Suncatchers/Amlong-Crystal-Solar-System-Stand/B00THHMU4Q/?pldnSite=1 if he appreciates art and likes to look at things. But a telescope would be best since you said he isn't into sports. That way he can have a physical activity without dealing with sports. I say hands-on is best because this age the kids are all over the internet and a refreshing physical activity is always very welcome and he'll appreciate it a lot if he can do cool stuff about space. I'm glad you're taking note of his interests and you're making sure he keeps it :)

Here is a variation of a dice game that was said to be played throughout Scandinavia during the time of the vikings. I am not sure how accurate it is but it is something to look into:

http://chrisvnh.bizland.com/mjollnir.html

Here is a rather beautiful Valknut pendant:

http://www.amazon.com/Valhalla-Valkyrie-Valknut-Pendant-Necklace/dp/B002DXMI1Q/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1321818713&sr=8-2

A beautiful pendant with a Viking longboat on it:

http://www.amazon.com/Pewter-Valhalla-Longboat-Protection-Talisman/dp/B004D56HBY/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1321818728&sr=8-17

A decent DISPLAY ONLY sword: (The blade is not properly connected to the hilt and it wiggles a little.)

Now if you can afford to spend a little more I would recommend some of these beautiful statues. They range from $46-$73, most with free shipping. I own the Freyja statue and it is absolutely beautiful.

First of all, thank you. Thank you for being a brave person and contacting people and helping out those kids.

I would recommend that like everyone else said, you should not answer any calls unless you're sure who they're from. I would also educate yourself. For me, when I told my Nmom that I wasn't going to see her, I looked up the non-emergency number for my local police and put it on the bulletin board. You could also put it in your phone. Research the process of a restraining order in your area. If you're up to it, call and talk to a police officer about your Nmom and mention that you're feeling scared and wondering what you can do.

I had an issue just a few weeks ago with our apartment manager. He started threatening me and the finally straw was when he called me at 2am and left a scary message on my voice mail. I called the cops, told them I was was scared, and they had an officer call me back. He was great, he explained what I could do to keep myself safe, and what options I had (like if I told him to stop calling me, and if he didn't, it would be considered telephonic harassment and he would be taken to jail). In my particular case, they knew the guy, knew that he was causing problems, and the officer took it upon himself to call the property owner and tell him that he was not fit to be a manager.

So my point is, if you're polite, and just ask for information, you can usually get it. If you can call the cops, you may find that they already know there is a situation, and if not, they can make note of the situation so they can help to keep your safe. If you're not comfortable calling, it can just be comforting to know your options and what rights you have.

And just to make you feel better, I lock my door every time i walk in my house, and I have a 90 pound guard dog who patrols my house. I wouldn't see it as paranoid, but being safe. I might also suggest, if you have the money, finding something to alert you to anyone walking towards your door. From some kind of alarm system, to one of those little garden frogs that croaks every time someone walks in front of it. Then at least you wouldn't freak out at car doors, only at the croaking.

Best of luck, and please, if you can, update us on how things work out. You are an awesome person, feel good about yourself.

Sorry for the ugly link (I'm on my phone and grabbed the first one I found) but I think this is what you're looking for. It's cheap, the individual concrete pieces are small so they won't crack like a slab would, and it looks nice enough. Use paverlock sand in between to prevent weeds from growing in joints, or put in dirt and plant a ground cover like creeping thyme. You don't need to do a ton of soil prep for this, but try to get it level.

Edit: just to clarify, this is cheaper and will last some years but it's not going to come out perfect and it will fall to nature faster than a traditional patio done correctly would. But I think this will do alright. I've done paver patio the right way by hand (700 sq ft solo) and it came out great. I also did it the wrong way in the garden because I had spare block and didn't want to spend effort and money on it. The garden path is fine - hasn't cracked or shifted in two years, but it's definitely wonky. If anyone is interested I'd be happy to share the differences between the projects and my perception of the durability of each.

I don’t think it matters, but fwiw, here are the links to what I use for mine:

Tray: Carlisle 1217BT03 Bistro Plastic Café Tray, 12" X 17", Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008RSKCBO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_j72ZDbRX6SPZC

Pebbles: skullis 5 Pounds River Rocks, Pebbles, Garden Outdoor Decorative Stones, Natural Polished Mixed Color Stones https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F2ZDSVV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_p82ZDb71BJEH5

It turned out really pretty - the “pebbles” are more like “stones”. They’re all pretty flat and probably 1”-1.5” in diameter and are polished. I think polished or not simply depends on your aesthetic preference. One order of those stones perfectly fills the tray. Three 6” pots easily fit on it and the humidity at the lip of those pots is consistently 60-70%.

A few ideas:

  • if you have craft stores or ceramic painting places, paint a picture frame and put a picture in it of family. Might not be a great idea if her vision is very bad though

  • a crystal pendant (can be in the shape of angel or a bird) that hangs in the window (with suction cup), catches the sun, and makes rainbows in the room (prism). Often called a suncatcher: https://www.amazon.ca/Crystal-Guardian-Suncatcher-Hanging-Multi-8pcs/dp/B0777PC64L

  • a cozy pair of slippers that are easy to slip on and off

  • I know you said nothing too loud but music can be very therapeutic for Alzheimer’s patients. If the nursing home allows, maybe worth getting her a small cheap boombox that just plays CDs and get a CD of music she enjoys. She won’t be able to use it herself most likely but it’s possible the staff wouldn’t mind turning it on every so often. It doesn’t have to be played “loudly” to still be beneficial. My grandma’s nursing home was fine with it even though she had a roommate because they also have TVs in the room and it was no louder than that.

  • Alzheimer’s patients respond well to things that have give a comforting tactile response. So maybe a very soft, stuffed animal to keep in her lap. You said she likes cats so maybe a cat: https://www.amazon.ca/Bearington-Stuffed-Animal-Siamese-Kitten/dp/B0106GRYKQ/ if that weirds you out, a very soft and cozy blanket might give the same kind of comfort. This is an example of a twiddle cat which is meant to be stimulating in the way I am talking about https://www.amazon.ca/Engaging-Activity-Alzheimers-Keeping-Busy/dp/B014X40O54/ but it’s expensive and soft things often work just as well.

  • Offer to paint her fingernails
u/myfrstbkt · 1 pointr/SpaceBuckets

Here's the basic parts list to build a bucket like this:

  • 2x 5 Gal buckets with lids (one for res, one for light top.) More buckets for spacers. (check your home improvement store of choice.)
  • A big roll of black duct tape. This
  • A roll of FlexFix tape. This
  • A couple of space blankets. This
  • A can of 3M spray adhesive. This is the good stuff
  • 5x light sockets with plug ends. These
  • 5x Philips SlimStyle LED "75w" 2700k. These
  • Some heatshrink tubing. Looks good
  • Some lamp cord and hookup wire. This, And This
  • A roll of flux/rosin core solder. Your Choice, this looks okay
  • An airpump. This one is awesome, This will do
  • Some airstones. [This] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002JLA83C/)
  • A distribution manifold. At least a 3 way
  • Some air lines. This, Or This
  • A length of 3/4" pvc pipe and a plug (check your home improvement store of choice).
  • A water dripper system. [This] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002JAY6E/)
  • Either a netpot and a bucket lid with a hole cut in it OR a premade netpot/bucket lid. This if you want to save some work
  • Some PC fans. [These are nice and cheap] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NTUJZ36/)
  • A PSU to run the fans and LED strip side lights you might add on spacers. This. It's 80+ at least. I had a few extra PSUs around. I wouldn't use one that isn't at least 80+ since it will be running 24/7.

Lots of this stuff can be had cheaper at a home improvement or pet store. Check around. You'll need a soldering iron (I like my adjustable 40w), a drill and drill bits up to 3/4" (I like step bits for work on plastic), a heatgun or lighter to shrink that heatshrink tubing. An infrared thermometer is nice to have and can tell you the temp of your nutrients, the plant itself, your lights, etc...Just make sure to calibrate it first, all the cheap ones are inaccurate by at least a few degrees.

Love this! Thank you for being so forthcoming and fabulous at the same time.

I’m a lesbian, and coming out wasn’t easy. First off my then foster parents were very active in the church my foster moms mom was a pastor at, I tried to explain to them what I was feeling and knew but they dismissed it as a “phase”. Fast forward to being 18 and under immense pressure to be straight so I could have a roof over my head I hid my girlfriend and ended up with a guy to please my parents, I got pregnant and as soon as I had my son I vowed to never let who I really am get pushed aside. Things didn’t go so well for awhile but once they saw how happy I was by being able to be myself they became more tolerant, now I’m married to a woman and while they sill didn’t come to the wedding they treat her with respect and are still a part of my Life

So, often if you click on the stores selling the items you can find more cheap items like that. It's usually Chinese wholesale stores, much like AliExpress. Here's one of the cheapiest items I've found that seems good quality. But if you follow through to the store that sell that, you can find these cute little mushrooms, these little rhinestones for nail art, and these cute fake flowers all for less than $2 with free shipping. You just have to dig! It's fun because I love just "browser" shopping.

Thank you! This is exactly the type of info I was looking for.

As far as I can tell, no-one makes a 12V DC pump that actually comes with a decent warranty, and is rated for continuous duty. Mostly, they're made for aerating small tanks (e.g., a cooler with fish you've caught) for a short period of time. The advice I've seen is "buy one, and plan to replace it at least every year".

Still, it might be more cost-effective to replace one of these every year than build the much bigger solar power system that would be required for a 120v system.

To back up a bit, my pond-aeration options are more broadly:

  • This continuous solar powered pump that I'm trying to price out here (maybe ~$800 if I go with the DC pump and 2x 100AH batteries)
  • A battery-free kit from Missouri Solar that would only operate when the sun was shining ($689 for this one)
  • A windmill-powered pond aeration pump that'd only work when the wind was blowing. We live in a pretty windy area, so I'd guess that average something like 12-hours per day of aeration, and about 2x the volume, at about 125 LPM vs. these pump's 60 LPM. ($1,335 here.)
  • Tie in to our well power line that goes about 50' from the pond, and have an electrician install an outdoor outlet so we can plug in a traditional 120v aerator. ($300 for the pump since I'd probably get a bit bigger pump with unlimited power available, plus $?? to have an electrician hook up the power, plus ~$10/mo in electricity costs)

This give me the info I need to have a much better assessment of my options. Thank you!

  1. A few years ago, I was freaking out over the exact same thing. Graduating, crushing debt, getting a job in this economy, losing the support network I'd built up at college and the automatically-available peers with similar interests that university provides. I'm a planner at heart, so what I did is build up a plan for the short term (how to fully take advantage of my remaining time in college) and one for the long-term (a job I should be able to get easily enough and how long I would want to work there in order to gain the necessary experience to get the job I ultimately want).

  2. As a fan of gnomes, this makes me giggle.

  3. Don't sweat the petty stuff and don't pet the sweaty stuff.

  4. It's okay. Everyone freaks out at this sort of thing. It will get better. Focus on what you can do in the here and now instead of freaking out about future maybes. If you need someone to talk to, PM me any time.

I bought a Hot Rod for my first tube amp a few years ago—mostly because I didn't really know what I was getting into. I haven't really had the money to replace it yet. (OK, fine, to be fair, I have, but I have other things I want to buy too.)

I've managed to get a sound I like out of it—even for my chimey 12-string. Here's how I do it:

  1. Plug only into channel 2.
  2. Keep my drive as clean as possible (1 or 2).
  3. Use a volume box in the effects loop (the pre/post jacks on the center-right of your controls).
  4. (Or build that box—it's a ridiculously simple project, but when I eventually rebuild mine, I'm going with a 25k ohm audio pot, not the 100k I used)
  5. Crank the master volume and use the volume box to keep your volume reasonable.
  6. Use an overdrive pedal the way god intended—slap your shit straight into full drive, but with some actual control over your tone.
  7. the Monoprice compressor pedal is surprisingly perfect for adding just a bit of bite to your tone without appreciably increasing the drive.
  8. Just get used to constantly apologizing for your amp's uncontrollable volume and bad-gnarly drive.

These are the ones I ordered https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07GDNF6FP. A UV flashlight instantly charges them. My friends and I throw them at each other and eventually tossed a whole bucket's worth of them in a driveway. The tracers when you're throwing them at night are awesome.

Sounds like this might be a good solution for both. Though, I'm not planning on driving on my project so might not have the same outcome. There's also webbed fabric that might be more economical for driveways. Geo grid

Oh man... Do I have to put the most expensive item. You asked for it. :)

  1. This

  2. I don't want it. I just put it on my ridiculously expensive list because I think it's hilarious to have it on there. Once it stops being funny to me, I'm going to take it off.

  3. I would be incredibly okay if I never get this item. I couldn't imagine owning the thing.
