(Part 3) Reddit mentions: The best handheld flashlights

First of all, What vehicle will you be traveling? I sure hope it is comfortable. A few years ago a few buddies and I bought a van and took a 43 day road trip around the country. Comfort is key and you will soon realize this. I would say keep the inflatable mattress even if you can't use it that often it will be a good luxury to have when you can use it after a week of sleeping on the ground.


You have to account for the hours and hours of driving, (always add at least an hour to your eta time for stopping for gas, bathroom, traffic) Plan out a rough route with POI but don't be disappointed if you don't get to see all of them. For instance, we arrived after dark at Mt. Rushmore because it didn't say on their website that they closed so we decided to drive an hour out of the way to check it out because it would look much cooler at night. We get there at about 1am and the gates are locked and you cannot see it from the road. We ended up having to drive an hour back to sleep in a truck stop parking lot because it was raining and we didn't want to set up camp anywhere. It was raining the next morning so we just got on the road and decided to drive 26 hours straight to Toronto! Moral of the story, effe Mt. Rushmore, you say there is no entrance fee but you have to pay $11 to be able to enter the park and park your car! We are still bitter about that one.



Buy The America The Beautiful Pass right now! It will save you so much money! The pass will pay for itself by the 2nd or 3rd park!



Will you have a smartphone? It is so helping when trying to find campsites, or restaurants, phone numbers. Will you have a GPS? If so, make sure the map is updated and buy an atlas and use it to double check all the gps calculated routes. Sometimes technology doesn't always know best. It lead us astray a few times but overall it was a life saver. Also make sure you have a small cooler to keep things cold, Jugs of water are also a necessity. A little propane stove and camping shovel if you plan on doing a lot of camping are both incredibly helpful. The thing is whatever we didn't bring, (like those 2 items) we were able to stop and get at Walmart. Flashlights! This is an extremely useful tool and for the price it is top-notch. Bring a camera and make sure you bring a way to backup your pictures. Also make a blog. You will be able to look back at it later and reminisce.



Also, California is a huge state! we ended up spending over a week there, which directly resulted in us skipping the Midwest to get to the East Coast. I would have probably spent less time there so we didn't have to drive 26 hours straight from Mt. Rushmore to Toronto.



Also, Mexico, I would go if you have the chance, if you post something on reddit every single person will tell you do not go to Mexico but they have not been or live in the middle of the US and only hear about the bad things in parts of Mexico. It does depend on where you go into Mexico though, Tijuana was kinda trashy and I would not go back there, seems like it could be a violent place. Nuevo Progreso near Harlingen, TX is a great place to visit Mexico. Go during the day and park on the US side, (Do not drive over) pay 25 cents to walk over the bridge and you are in a quaint little Mexico town where most people can speak english and you can use US dollars for everything. I would highly recommend Angels for lunch and drunk. 75 cent STRONG margaritas and cheap but delicious food.




Recommendations:

• Make sure you Hit Zion National Park, its beautiful. If you plan on camping in Zion go to this BLM land, it’s not listed or advertised anywhere, if you ask park employees about it they probably won’t know. If you leave out of the east coast of the park drive about 2.8 miles and you will come to a blue gate on the right side of the road. This is the entrance, if you reach the Zion Mountain Resort on your right you have gone too far. Make sure you close the gate behind you because it’s where the buffalo roam (no pun intended). You drive up the road, (kind of steep dirt road, but my friends and I did it in a conversion van so it should be no problem.) you will pass 2 cabins on your left, keep going and you will start seeing 'campsites' scattered about. You can camp anywhere out there for however long you want. There was one other car there that drove in with us at the time and we didn't see them again the whole 2 days we were there! Shortly after you start seeing the campsites the road will split, you can go straight or turn left and start heading slightly downhill following the barbwire fence. Go about 1/4 mile and you will see an opening on your right. These are generally the BLM Land guidelines at most dispersed campgrounds. Here are a few pictures I pulled up of our campsite.
  
  
• We went to the south rim of the grand canyon and unless you love hiking I would not recommend hiking down into the canyon, the best view is at the top. do the rim hike instead.
  
  
• Do Vegas, but do Vegas properly for 1 night, that is all you need. I would recommend The Venetian (we got an amazing room for for just over 200, i signed up for the mailing list and get emails now for rooms at about $129 now. )
  
  
• Hoover Dam is cool but not worth the money to go inside
  
  
• In Vegas stop at the Heart Attack Grill and take a picture a for me. When I tried to go it was closed for renovations.
  
  
• Make a stop at Yosemite National Park in Cali, its beautiful. Take route 108 through Yosemite National Park. At the time they had 4x as much snow pack as they usually do at that time of year. We were driving through 10ft snow walls on either side of us, climbing to 10,000 ft and beautiful snow covered mountains. (In mid June)
  
  
• Take Highway 101 up the west coast through northern Cali and Oregon into Washington. It is supposedly beautiful, we ran out of time to take that route and that is one of our main regrets we didn't get to do.
  
  
• Redwood national park, if you like camping we did a 5mile hike to the shore through the redwood forest, it was amazing!
  
  
• Stop in Seattle, its a nice place, go to the Public Market (the place where they throw fish and the first Starbucks was born)

I'll start with the TL:DR, because this got long. It can be pretty easy, depending on the light. Search Google for "<name of light you're interested in> LED swap" or ..."emitter swap" to see if anyone has done it already. Typically, cheap Chinese lights are the easiest to modify, but most everything I've opened aside from Armytek, Olight, and Zebralight has been reasonably straightforward. If you're interested in small keychain lights, I'd recommend picking up a Thrunite Ti3 and a 5000K Samsung LH351c or an SST-20 in 4000K or 3500K. This is sort of diving right into the deep end because it's all tiny parts and requires reflow soldering, but it's all cheap stuff and if your hands are steady enough for that, you should have no problem with larger lights. If you want something easier, look at a Convoy S2+, which takes standard 16mm MCPCBs and can be modified in minutes with just a soldering iron.

It varies, and there are sort of three tiers of difficulty to replacing an LED.

Most flashlights solder the bare surface-mount LED to a metal-core printed circuit board, or MCPCB, which helps spread heat and also provides easy access to the three contacts on the back of the LED (positive, negative, and heatsink). In a decent flashlight, this MCPCB is basically always placed on a metal shelf with a layer of thermal compound, and wires are run back into the body of the light to connect the driver. A typical assembly looks like this.

In a surprising and impressive number of flashlights, this MCPCB is a standard size, usually 10mm, 14mm, 16mm, or 20mm in diameter. If your flashlight uses one of these common sizes, you can simply buy your new LED pre-mounted and you can slot the new one in place just by replacing the thermal compound and soldering the positive and negative wires.

If your particular flashlight doesn't use a standard size MCPCB, it might be easier to reuse the one it came with; at this point you will need to understand the size of the LED itself, and "reflow" solder a new LED to the MCPCB. The first part is easy - there are very few sizes to be aware of. Cree's very common XM-L and XM-L2, plus a lot of Chinese knockoffs like the Latticebright XM2 use an identical 5mm square layout - sometimes referred to as "XM" footprint. And almost every other LED we care about, including all variants of Cree XP-E, XP-G, XP-L, Nichia 219 and 319, Samsung LH351, and Luminus SST-20, use a shared 3.5mm square "XP" footprint. You can interchange any of these LEDs on its MCPCB by removing it from the flashlight and using a hot skillet on the stove to melt all the solder at once and remove and replace the LED with tweezers. This is roughly what would be required to change the LED in the Nitecore TINI, although it uses a weird flexible PCB instead of an MCPCB. The only time this causes problems is when you want to change to a different LED footprint on a nonstandard MCPCB - you'll most likely wind up filing and sanding a common size to fit, because footprints can't be changed.

The final level of difficulty is with flashlights like Zebralight, which house their driver circuitry on the same board as their LED. You can only replace these with the same footprint LED, and you have to use a fancy hot-air soldering station to melt the LED out without disturbing any other components. This is pretty advanced and best avoided.

You don't have to worry about "enough", although sometimes you need to worry about "too much". Most common LED's expect to see around 3 volts from a constant-current source, and this is what almost every flashlight driver provides. The driver also sets the modes by supplying various amounts of current, so if you want to ask for "modern modes" you actually need to replace the driver, not the LED. This has a lot in common with replacing the LED, in terms of standardization, but I'm not going into it here.

Every LED I've listed is perfectly happy being given a tiny amount of current, as used by smaller flashlights and lower power modes. But not every LED can take the same maximum power. Very roughly, the XP-E is safe to swap into a flashlight originally producing up to 300 lumens, the XP-G, 219b, LH351c, and SST-20 are safe up to 500 or 600 lumens, and the XP-L, XM-L, 219c, 319c, LH351D are good to 1,000. Efficiency varies, so if you have a 1,000 lumen light with a stock XM-L2 and you install a 219c, it's going to make 675 lumens instead of 1,000, but the LED will be safe. Again, you can swap an LED capable of more power in place of a lesser one - however, the lower-power LEDs typically have a smaller light-producing die and create a more focused beam, which may be desirable especially in a smaller flashlight (which will tend to produce a pretty wide beam otherwise).

I like my SRT5, but given the choice in the current market, I think I could save a few bucks on some alternatives. I do really like the control ring of the SRT5 and it is still unique in the market, but I don't think it's worth the extra price on top of some of these competitors.

• ThruNite TN12 (2014) - This guy is very new to the market but ends up being very similar to a Fenix PD35 at a lower cost. You also get the option of Neutral white tint.
  
  
• ThruNite Neutron 2C V2 - Similar to the Fenix E35 (below) this light has a single side switch for power and mode selection. Excellent value and brightness is on par with all of the others in this realm.
  
  
• Nitecore P12 - $60 for 950lm high mode, side mode switch button just like the PD35 and TN12.
  
  
• [Nitecore P10] (http://www.amazon.com/Nitecore-Tactical-Flashlight-Batteries-LumenTac/dp/B00M0EFYIC) - Quite similar to the P12, save ~$5 and take the max lumen output peak down a bit. Mode switch is on the tail next to the clicky - for emphasis on quick access to strobe modes and that sort of thing if you need it.
  
  
• [Fenix PD35] (http://www.fenixlight.com/ProductMore.aspx?id=137&tid=9&cid=1) - It looks like Fenix has responded to the P12 with this 2014 edition of the PD35 here on amazon, bringing it to 960lm in turbo. Won't be all that different from the previous PD35.
  
  
• Fenix E35 Ultimate Edition - This light is rather similar to the P10, except you have a single side switch for power and mode changes. Comes in at a great value, if you are OK with the UI.
  
  Out of the above I would basically narrow it down based on what UI you like the best, weighted with price as well. If you would like power and separate mode switches, you've got the TN12, P12, P10, and PD35 to choose from. For a better value with just a single switch there is the E35UE and Neutron 2C V2. Based on my preference and budget I would try to get the TN12 (2014) in neutral tint if you can find it. If I needed a quicker turnaround I'd probably go with the P12 at $60. These are based on my personal criteria, definitely have a look at the parametrek page for your parameters as well.

All that being said, I've changed my opinion a little bit. I know lights without zoom are still more durable and lighter, but I wonder if a zoom light is capable of more throw at lower levels of brightness - this would mean a simple twist, instead of a button press, to see further away and adjust back to normal use, and less battery drain. If anyone has a contact at Wowtac, I'd love to get an A1 and A3, or an A1s and A3s in hand so I could do a side by side comparison and come back with some definitive measurements.

There's really not. Those are wildly inflated claims, but now and again you'll come across an okay light. I have a $10 Ultrafire I'm pretty ambivalent about. As in, it often works when I want it to.

I'd say your best $20 bet would be a Fenix. They're well made, bright, and tend to be on the cheaper end of the better flashlights. Convoy is another great option.

If I can convince you to spend just twice as much, though, we're getting into the beginnings of serious light territory. You can expect these lights to last you years, not months, and also to have more than 200 lumens. Check out this 4sevens and this Nitecore.

Finally, if you really want thousands of lumens (you don't, unless you're a caver or a photographer or you work in search and rescue), you're in luck, but your wallet isn't. Feast your eyes.

I used to be a fan before I discovered this sub. A Coast G50 ran in my pocket for some time before being replaced with another Coast (this one was some el-cheapo with four 5mm LEDs and two of some other flavor... Fit better in the pocket but it was crazy dim and had a hideous beam pattern.)

They're fine. The Coast HP1 can take a 14500 Li-Ion cell as well as alkaline or Ni-MH options which is pretty neat, and for $8 its a pretty good light. Their inspection lights (penlights) are also pretty unique because their optics cast a completely flat circle of light with no spill.

They are absolutely lacking in LED tech though - I don't know who makes their emitters, but they are pretty pathetic. Their rechargeable options are also insanely expensive and use proprietary batteries, which is a big no-no on this sub.

Overall if you've got one and you like it - great! Nothing wrong with that at all, we all have our preferences. That said, if you are starting out, there are options that completely blow them out of the water for cheaper.

What do you like about their stuff?

I carry a Preon P2 (2xAA) as my daily because it's small enough to fit comfortably in my pocket, but if you're looking for something more powerful, the Streamlight 88031 (2xCR123) is a fine light.

I know it's above your price point, but I have to mention the Fenix PD35 (2xCR123) as well. Of the ~10 lights I own, it's my favorite by a mile.

Both the 88031 and the PD35 come with a pair of batteries and a holster.

There are some decent AA lights out there as well; I can recommend a couple if you're interested. It's important to note that CR123 lights are generally better because the batteries are more suited to the high current required for a bright LED; if battery cost is an issue, look into rechargeable batteries for the CR123 lights.

TLDR: See links; CR123 lights are brighter and last longer; get rechargeable batteries if CR123 is an issue.

I have EDC'd an Olight S2 Baton for about 6 months now. I think it would fit your needs well.

It is right at £40, but I think it is well worth it. Extremely bright, very tiny and rugged, great user interface.

Also, 18650 is definitely the way to go. So much better than AA. Slightly bigger, but waaaay brighter and longer lasting. Get some of these and a nice charger. Make sure the batteries say Made in Japan when you receive them.

Im looking around $30-$40 USD but I can spend more if the torch is worth it, so that $30 A1s is in a pretty good spot if I end up trusting ebay. And yeah I forgot to include im from Australia, sorry.

Is there any other torches you recommend that ship here? After a quick search this is the only high powered 18650 torch that wasnt crazy expensive. It is a lot more expensive ($67 with the battery) but it seems like a really good torch, do you think its worth it?

$76 total, and you just need a LiIon charger for the 18650, or you can use a more serious hobby charger, as well as a 1" light mount. this light is versatile enough for use in every day carry if you so desire, and the bare minimum of what I consider a 'good light' It also comes in the 'MH' series (ie MH12) that is USB rechargable but costs more. This should give you 4-5 hours of 'max bright' around 900 lumens with a good 100-200' of throw, has strobe, momentary, and a good selection of brightness modes.

if you're feeling cheaper than that, don't buy some offbrand <whatever>fire brand thing that will catch fire. There are some interesting variations on the ultrafires, like the models that they ripped off initially which aren't bad

The convoy doesn't have as many modes, but it has most of what you need, Full bright, medium and low, as well as Strobe and a function to remember which mode when you toggle momentary. This one isn't as throwy, but still puts out around 600 lumens and casts out to around 90'. The convoy isn't impact resistant, so you may want a lens protector if you can be bothered. It' the cheapest thing I can feel comfortable recommending

Coast HP1 is pretty fantastic. Runs on a single AA or 10440. With the 10440 you get 190 lumens. Thing is tough, waterproof, strong clip.

Best thing about it though, is the zoomable lens. Goes from a near perfect super wide flood (great for indoors) to a super focused long throw.

Little under $9 on amazon right now.

Fenix does make some great lights but IMHO they stumbled with the E12 - I had an E11 for years and it was the perfect pocket light. On the E11 the button did one thing - turned the light on and off (and momentary). Sadly my last E11 is deep beneath the ocean...
But they decided, with the E12, to use the same button for cycling through the different brightness modes, and got rid of the half-press momentary-on. That's rather annoying when you want to grab it and look inside a roadcase quick.
After a buncha searching, I didn't find any other lights quite as small as the E11, that take a AA battery, but started using this one:

I've been quite happy with it, and even more happy with its (substantially brighter) output when I realized I could put 14500 rechargeables in it.

The first thing I learned is there are things I'd like to carry with me all the time, and then there's the annoyance of encumbrance. All of these EDC videos on YouTube show some interesting products, but there's no way I could walk around with all the shit people carry on them all day.

I have found nothing better than the Troika for organizing keys, and things that can be carried on keyrings. Since my latest vehicle is push-to-start, I no longer have to concern myself too much with weight on my keyring the way I used to when I had to put it into the ignition. I am such a fan of these Troikas that I just give them out as gifts to everyone I know.

I realized that I don't have a lifestyle where I really need full-sized tools on an everyday carry basis. Accordingly, I just use a Leatherman Micra and a one-cell Fenix E01 flashlight. If I know I'm going out walking at night, I'll bring something larger, but my point here is the first thing I did was pare down what I carried to what I actually needed. Both are connected to the Troika with my keys, and easily detachable (that's what the Troika does best.)

This way, my front right pocket contains my keys, the Micra, and a Flashlight.

Secondly, I always wear an unbuttoned overshirt everywhere I go. This provides me breast pockets in which I carry a pen. So-called "tactical" pens are mocked, in large part because they are called "tactical" pens, which is hilarious. However, these have a variety of benefits:

• They are me-proof. Because they are made of durable metal, they won't get bent or explode on me. This is important.
  
  
• The one I use has a rape whistle and a firestarter (srsly) in it as well. I will likely never have use for either, but I get them "for free."
  
  One pocket contains the pen, and sometimes a penlight (which is as much "full sized" flashlight as I need.) The Streamlight Stylus Pro is simply the best flashlight I've ever owned:
  
  
• It is affordable.
  
  
• It is not "too much" flashlight. I used to carry a Fenix LD20 for walking at night, but, aside from its annoying features (the stupid strobe mode, for example), I found that in the event it moved across the window of a house, it would likely alarm the tenants. Super-powered flashlights have their uses and fans, but for walking at night where I live, it's overkill for me. If I was searching for something in the dark, I'd maybe bring something heavier. In addition, it doesn't fuck with my night vision the way one of the super bright ones does. Sometimes less is more. It's also more carryable and less fiddly.
  
  The Stylus Pro lives in my breast pocket next to the pen when I carry it, and it has one feature I love more than others: one mode, and one mode only. I never engage the strobe by mistake or anything like this. If I ever need to use it in combination with a firearm, I won't have to worry about activating the wrong mode. It has a single "proud" clicky at the back, and is just the shit. So much so I own 4 - one for the car, and a few in other rooms of the house.
  
  The other breast pocket carries my cell phone.
  
  Wallet is a Maxpedition Spartan, the best wallet I've ever owned, and the longest-lasting by orders of magnitude. That ALWAYS GOES IN THE BACK LEFT POCKET, because on the occasions I have a gun, that is carried on my right at about 4:30. As I am rountinely stopped and questioned by police just for walking at night, and asked to produce my ID, I don't want my hand going anywhere near my pistol (or exposing it by lifting up my shirt on that side).
  
  Lastly, sometimes (generally when hiking, because I need it to handle cactus spines - mainly cholla chunks), I carry an assisted opening blade clipped inside my left front pocket - a Benchmade Barrage, or my Kershaw Volt, which is ambidextrous.
  
  I have this fear of someone grabbing at my firearm, which is, when carried, always carried concealed. This frees up my right arm to fight off Mr. Grabbypants and secure the gun, and my left hand can go for the knife to make my point in a somewhat more strident manner, if necessary.

$10 is a tough budget.

Coast HP1 was my first foray into the hobby. It has a horrid tint (maybe be good if you are attacked by a tint snob). It's zoomie, but a more efficient zoom. It supports 14500 so it can get pretty bright for the price. It is single mode with momentary. It's not bad for the price.

Lumintop Tool Nichia is currently on sale at gearbest for $11. I can't comment on it too much since I just ordered it last night, but from what I've read, it's a solid little light.

Nitecore Tube is a solid little keychain light in your budget.

All three lights are superior at least on par to your S***HK.

If you are willing to go to $20, the Atactical A1 is probably one of the best bang for buck all in one lights around righnow.

Seriously, now is the time to get your house in order. While I question the credibility of the various leaks regarding BLM's intention to instigate martial law this summer, I wouldn't be surprised if things got a little "awkward" out in the world. That said, aside from the weapons and ammunition talked about it would be a good idea for everybody to have some basics on hand to make yourselves a bit more self-sufficient. Whether anything happens, it's good insurance for any sort of disruption however big or small.

Water: Every time you go to the grocery store, grab a couple of those 1 gallon water bottles. They are like 85 cents. Do this until you have about 12-15 of these. If you have the room, look into larger 5-10 gallon containers. I personally have about 72 gallons of water on hand.

Food: Pick up non-perishable foods that can be eaten with little to no preparation. Just last week they had Progresso Chicken Soup for $0.79 a can so I grabbed a case of 12. That's dinner for 12 days. Energy bars, oats, whatever.

Gasoline: Keep a full tank in your car and never let it get below half a tank. I also keep three 5-gallon containers of gas at my house just in case (which I rotate annually).

Cash: Have cash on hand locked up in a safe or some secure area. I keep about $500 cash in various bills.

I could go on and on. I'm always amazed at how ill-prepared most of my friends are. But if there was ever a problem (power outage, natural disaster, civil unrest) it's nice to have a buffer of water, food, lighting, etc so that you're not as reliant on the infrastructure as the next guy.

It gets the job done. Not the brightest but it's size is really nice. Fits perfect next to my pen in the utility pocket of my work pants. I use it for checking pupils and stuff so I didn't want anything too bright. But I am looking for something more powerful, maybe with multiple power settings. Was checking this out Coast HP1 and it looks pretty solid but doesn't have multiple settings.

If you're not in a hurry, an Emisar D18 in 4000K would be a good choice. Great UI, high CRI, neutral/warm white.

If you're just starting out though, I'd get something less insane. A Sofirn C8F might be a good start. It comes with a battery and charger, it's quite bright but not bright enough to melt a hole in your jacket pocket. If you want a bit more oomph, a Sofirn SP36 would be good. It also comes with batteries, it has built-in charging, and it also has a great UI. And 6000 lumens for $80 is pretty good.

The Olight S2 has a side switch, and I know many people enjoy their products. I don't have any experience with Olight, but take a look at the Amazon link, and the product page on their website, and see what you think.

For a battery, I'm not sure if Olight has low voltage protection on their flashlights (and hopefully someone else can chime in on this), so if it does, Sanyo NCR18650GA batteries are on sale at IMR. If not, a protected cell will be a good idea.

For a charger, the Thrunite C2 is pretty good, with the ability to act as a powerbank and a charger, and it also comes with its own protected cell. If you don't feel any need to have more than one 18650, just get this, and you get the charger and the cell for $16.

EDIT: Oh, shoot, I totally forgot about the Emisar D4. It's not currently in stock on MTN Electronics, but it's a good light. Take a read-through on ToyKeeper's review that u/Ratus_ posted.

Another vote for fewer giveaways. It's awesome enough you're doing this so no need to bankrupt yourself, but I like more options for prizes that come with a higher dollar value.

You are basically in for the entire forum to show up and try to talk you out of the zoom lens. They really don't get much in the way of love around here. Most of the lights you'll see recommended (and the A6 in particular, which is a really incredible light) have a balanced mixture of flood and throw. There is a central hot spot that throws a significant distance, surrounded by a spill of light that neatly floods out, it basically encompasses the whole range of zoom. If you need a dedicated thrower, get one of those, or a dedicated flooder, get one of those. A zoomie basically tries to do both, and sucks at everything. Additionally, there really isn't a good way to waterproof one, so they tend to be far less robust than most of the other lights on the market, as well as being far less efficient in the amount of light that they actually put out. The BLF A6 would be a great option, as would a Wowtac A1s, which comes with a battery so it's ready to go. Spending a bit more a Thrunite Neutron 2C is another great choice.

If you absolutely, positively, no buts about it think that all of these nerds who spend an utterly absurd amount of time on the subject of flashlights couldn't possibly be right, and you, come hell or high water, are going to be ordering a zoomie no matter what we tell you, the Wowtac A3s sucks considerably less than the one you have.

2×AAA: FourSevens Preon P2

This light is really nice but it pushes the brightness for AAA so that's why it has less than an hour of runtime on max.

2×AA: Thrunite Archer 2A V2

This uses the newest XP-L emitter which is barely more efficient than the XM-L2 LED and will give you excellent runtime.

On the cheaper side, there's the Solarforce T2 which has 3 modes and a good balance between them.

Single AA: Olight S15

I chose this because it can also use 14500 batteries which would give it an even higher output of around 350 lumens(probably a little higher).

Are you opposed to rechargeable batteries? Something that uses an 18650 will be a lot brighter and give you better battery life.

Here are a couple of options, option one is brighter and has a little tighter hot spot. You also get a choice of what color temp you want. It will take 2 weeks to a month to arrive. Option two isn't quite as bright but it's still a nice light, it's big benefits are that it has a magnetic tail cap which can be nice, and the clip faces the other way so if you wear a hat you can use it like a headlamp. You'll have it in a week or less.

You've correctly identified it as junk. Good.

If you really want a zoomie, check out the Wowtac A3S, but we tend to recommend fixed-focus lights for most applications. They're more durable, more waterproof, and have more efficient optics. The duty lights section of the arbitrary list of popular lights has some options that may work well for security work.

I had to look it up but here you go:

80 lumens / 35min – 20 lumens / 8hr – 0.5 lumens / 60hr.

I've found that 20 lumens is what I use most often for night hiking or lighting my tent at night. 0.5 lumens would be nice as a reading light. 80 lumens is helpful sometimes if you need it really bright for a short time.

The ThruNite Ti3 seems very similar. One of the mods here has it and loves it. It's only $14 right now, so that's an option too.

I would recommend the Gerber Artifact over the Shard. They are essentially the same tool but the Artifact has a built in x-acto blade holder for small cutting tasks. It’s great for tape or anything that would gum up another knife. Also, I would get a light that uses a AA or AAA battery as they are easier to come by then the button cells in the Streamlight Nano (I am currently using a Fenix E01 and it’s a great little light)

It's not quite that cold in Utah, so I have no idea which batteries are best, but I have a strong preference for dual switch (tail power, side e-switch) for biking in the winter. My Thorfire Tk15s has been in bike strobe mode since early fall, and I've never accidentally changed the mode turning it on and off with gloves on.

So, maybe a Sofirn C8f with a 21700 would have enough juice for you. It don't think it has bike strobe, but I've always thought it would be fun to put on my handlebars. The triple should be more efficient than a single emitter, and the 21700 has more capacity than 18650s.

ETA: Oops, it appears a 21700 won't fit in your i4. Maybe a 26650 light?

I really like my Maglight XL-50, it's a great light for 30$. People here don't like it too much as it is AAA and apparently the driver or led isn't top notch, but I have had this for four years now and still love it. The Olight S2 is generally considered a much better light, and seriously you would want to invest in one that uses 18650s instead of AA or AAA as they aren't even expensive and have lots of benefits.

What about a Thrunite Ti4? Two AAA (pick up some good NiMH batteries-- Eneloops or rewraps), with a nice moonlight mode and adequate low for searching bags without blinding people. Also has a 250 lumen high and strobe (might be useful for directing). It's about the same thickness as a AA battery, and pen length at 5.5 inches long. Neutral white would be recommended over cool white for better color identification-- especially for your use case.

You can get some batteries and charger, and the light with a sweet titanium body for about $55. Or the light direct from Thrunite in black with shipping for about the same.

Total: $20.79 (assuming the $4 price on the button light, it's a little over, but you can probably find one for $3 if you look)

This kinda depends on your needs. The Style functions better as a knife than the Rally (in my opinion), and offers essentially the same tools plus a great pair of scissors. But in return, you sacrifice a little in terms of your light. Personally I'd opt for the Style + generic.

Give LEDs another try.
By far their best quality is their efficiency and durability.

A burned out LED should never be a problem with an adequately designed system. And if the entire lamp fails than its more than likely just a bad product or an unlucky lemon.

My choice of brand is Coast. They're a bit expensive, but they don't pad their specs and they have really good optics.

If $50 is a hard line, Sofirn SP33 is 2500 lumens and more than most uses require. It comes with a 26650 and charger for $41.

As others have stated, Sofirn SP36 BLF edition with Anduril is probably the best option in that range. You can get the light with stock Sofirn branded batteries for $70 or get it without for $50.

If you want slightly better than the stock Sofirn batteries, you can get 3 of the popular and budget friendly high drain 18650's like the Samsung 30q for $16.50 + shipping.

Anything by Fenix will be quality. REI will sell you a E05 or E12 (aaa and aa lights)

For $10 that looks like a good buy. I will get one as a white-elephent gift and see what I think of it (any maybe get another if I like it, I have been wanting a good AA light to go with all my rechargeable ones that my current camera does not use.)

I sold my Glock 19 RTF2 for $830 to a guy in Georgia. I posted it up online as joke to a few buddies of mine for $950. Next thing I knew, I was getting FLOODED with emails about this gun. Emails from Alaska, Nevada, California, Florida, Indiana, Georgia, and Michigan as well. I had no idea you could not find a Glock 19 RTF2 with curved serration (fish-gills) anywhere. If you're worried about the battery issue, you could go with a light that takes a AA or a 14500 like the coast hp1. If they want the extra power they can choose to buy the batteries and charger but if not for ten bucks its a great light, especially for someone who may not care about a fancy higher end light. And the focusing beam makes it very versatile between flood and throw. (Speaking as a big city resident.) It was my first light, and I was very impressed compared to all the other crap lights i previously owned, but its not impressively bright the way many of the other popular lights on this sub are. The $10 price tag made it an easy choice as a way to get my feet wet.

I'd recomend a 2xAAA penlight. I used to EDC a CR123 light and it was super bulky. Penlights are way more conspicuous, smaller, and maybe easier to hold and control.
Streamlight Stylus or a Preon both are great I think.

If it's not too late, I'd suggest a Coast HP1 and a Nitecore 25mm Red Filter, both available with Amazon Prime. For rechargeable batteries you can't go wrong with AA Eneloops (the battery I'd normally recommend anyway), and if down the road you want more light you can always pick up a 14500. With AAs, though, it will still be bright enough to be useful while not being obnoxious or getting too hot to hold.

I don't have the listed Nitecore filter, but the head of my HP1 measures 25mm, so it should fit just right.

As for knives look into the cold steel voyager series. The pretty cheap but have a good lock and come in 3, 4, or 5.5 inch sizes.

The best mini flashlight I have seen is the Thrunite Ti3. They have two options to choose from: CW (cool white) and NW (neutral white). I would personally go for the CW, just because it feels brighter when you use it, if that makes any sense. This is my favorite light in the world. It has a low-power mode that's appropriate for checking pupillary response, but also has full-power retina-burner modes, too. I love it.

• Keychain knife -- comes in handy more than you'd think. There's a full range of styles and prices. Great for opening Amazon boxes!
  
  
• Keychain flashlight. But, I prefer an $11 Fenix E01 because it takes a single AAA battery (I use rechargeables) instead of a special format smaller battery.
  
  Think of an accessory and it may come in keychain form... pen, scissors, etc.

I'll recommend two lights for ya. Both are around $60 shipped, so I hope that will do if you don't find any other options. Both have multiple modes but a separate button to sort through them so you can turn it on and off with a single click in whatever mode you left it in.

  The sheath has a narrow pocket behind where the leatherman goes. It is meant for an extra set of bits for the screwdriver. The Gerber knife fits in there really well. The battery that is included has a USB port, of course you need to take it out to charge it though.

As I said I can't remember any lights under $50 that have a port on the light itself. If you're willing to spend a bit more the Thrunite TC12 is definitely the better light, and has a USB port. Again I'd recommend the neutral white (NW) version.

The Streamlight Protac 2-L is amazing for the price. This has been in my EDC rotation for almost a year and it's still going strong.

The Coast HP1 is a great around-the-house light. One-mode clicky, runs on 1AA (claimed runtime is 3h30m on an alkaline), and you can move the head between a fairly tight beam and a very floody flood.

Generic SK68s seem to be very hit-or-miss based on reviews, so if you're looking for something reliable it may well be worth it to pay the $10 for a light from a company that is US based and has a warranty.

I've been looking at this ThruNite 2xAA as an alternative to my T10.

I probably won't win with 500 entries, but I just want to say it's awesome of you to do this giveaway.

I suggest you take a look at Eneloops - basically rechargeable batteries. They've come a long way and give you more options: this way, any AAA flashlight becomes feasible, rather than that is already rechargeable.

Second, Parametrek is spot on - a firefly mode is what you want. I generally EDC an L3 L11c (amazon). It's a single AA flashlight with a Nichia high CRI emitter (good tint!) and a tail button. I've also got a twisty Thrunite Ti3 (amazon) for when I need a tiny light that runs on common batteries.

Edit: Also, it looks like you can still buy the BLF-348. That's a flashlight that was designed by BudgetLightForums to make the ideal cheap 1xAAA light. It's under $10, high CRI, and quite small. It only has one mode, though. Gearbest link

Sounds like you'd want a shorter 1xAAA penlight. Maybe the Fenix LD02 V2 or the Preon P1 Mk3 if you want something dressier looking.

I’d have to say this one! Battery life and size both look great!

I'm actually trying to decide on a light to just leave in my vehicle. I've narrowed it down to an Olight S10, S20, or a Nitecore EC20. The Olights listed have a magnet in the bottom cap, and the S10 is small enough to clip onto the bill of a hat. But I really like the range of the Nitecore EC20.


Those are all around $40. People will probably start suggesting a Nitecore P12 or a Fenix PD35 for you. They are in your price range and very bright.



If you don't need the light now, or even very soon, you could order the P12 from Amazon for $47.11 right now but there's no telling when it will ship. That is a very good price based on my research.

First, 10440? or 14500? 10440 is AAA size Lithium, 14500 is AA size.

Also, for both AAA and AA you can run Eneloops in almost any AA/AAA light to save replacing batteries.

Nothing in a AA/AAA size is really going to be "throwy" in that form factor.

The ThruNite Archer 2A would have a throw of ~100 meters, which is WAY bigger than you'd need for a theater, and you can buy some Eneloops and a charger for less than the Coast.

If you want the smaller form factor, the ThruNite Ti4(or its Titanium Cousin) will have about ~54 meters of throw (which would be enough) in a slimmer package and again leave room for a charger and batteries.

I recommend whatever you get use non-rechargeable lithium batteries if it's going to sit in storage and be only occasionally used. Batteries in flashlights tend to burst.
