> have heard a lot about the Keto diet helping, especially in children. Have/did you have any luck or results with this diet type?

It didn't work well for me and made me extremly constipated because of the lack of fiber. If I was you I would just limit servings of carbs to one serving a day (1 slice bread, 1 cup noodle, 1/2 cup rice etc.) and make sure it is whole wheat and cut out sugars as much as you can, limiting fruit intake to two or three servings a week. Also go heavy on the veggies and the healthy lean protiens such as chicken and fish, though watch out for too much fish as too much is dangerous. Limit fish intake to two to three servings a week. Good examples are turkey bacon and eggs for breakfast, whole wheat rice and veggies for lunch with low sodium soy sauce and chicken or fish with beans and veggies for dinner and unflavored, full fat greek yogurt with honey and bananas for dessert once in a while. I mean mix it up a ton but this is what I do and it works for me, but that is the key word:me. Everyone is different.

Talk to your neuro about diet options for sure as this helps. Stay away from soft drinks, aspartame and caffeine also. A slice of sugar free gum won't kill you but diet coke can be bad for epilepsy.

I firmly believe, even though it's very hard sometimes, that a diagnosis shouldn't rule your life.

Agreed. I had a hard time not letting my diagnosis rule my life. It is hard being 21 and not drinking anymore or going concerts where there could be strobe lights or if I do, excusing myself if I feel sick, when I used to do that with my friends all the time. I used to be a wild child but it made me clean up my act, which is awesome. It is hard though so I understand for sure.

The best advice I can give you though is that everyone is different, how seizures affect your son may be different than how they affect me. Good luck though and keep your neuros card on hand. Also, get a medical alert bracelet such as this which is easy to put on, waterproof and everything. It will make you feel a lot better.

I replaced the bedside tv with an iPad mounted to the wall. You can lock it into Netflix so he can choose his own shows and feel a bit empowered. The screen is not huge but the remotes were confusing him. I made his list on Netflix his favorite shows so he can just touch the one he wants. I still have to help sometimes but it's not completely frustrating for him.

I got a freedom alert it's like a medic alert button but it first calls 4 programmed numbers before 911. I also purchased a few additional buttons as well. I put these buttons around the house in places he sits etc. he uses it to alert me that he needs something (a drink etc) or if he is confused. This allows me to do chores around the house without having to stop and check on him every few mins. I hear the system get a dial tone and begin dialing and generally am able to turn it off long before it ever makes a call.

I got him this pill dispenser back when he was able to concentrate well enough to dependably take his meds. I now give him his pills twice a day but the dispenser is still very helpful in ensuring I don't forget! It's very nice only having to get the bottles out every two weeks as well.

These help me to be a better caregiver by removing some of the stress. I also have the usual bed alarms etc.

I've seen lots of kids with these lately and think that they could maybe help provide some peace of mind. I have celiac (similar issues with cross contamination only thankfully no possibility of death) so I understand what it's like to be eating a different food or sitting at a special table. My mom used to send a letter just giving her phone number asking people to let her know if there were going to be birthday party snacks, etc. so she could surprise me.

The good news is that nut allergies are one of the more frequent 504s that schools deal with.

There are some smartphone apps out there which require the user to check-in every morning, otherwise the app will notify specific people that the user hasn't checked in that day. I can't really vouch for any, but I highly recommend looking into those as an option.

Here's one for iOS I've been using, since I live alone, have a dog, and there's a free version: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/snug-safety/id1122758716 edit: I just tested this the other day and it worked like a charm, texts were sent out about 15 minutes after the deadline.

This obviously won't help you help them immediately (an emergency beacon of some sort would be better in that case), but could help if they fail to wake up, or something like that. There are relatively cheap options for smartphone paired emergency buttons, like this one on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Wearsafe-Personal-Emergency-Response-Lifetime/dp/B07KPWT4TB/

We have this bracelet for our three year-old and I love it. It's bright, a material comfortable enough for him to wear, and the pictures are excellent for both non-English speakers and children.

u/Fuko_ · 1 pointr/Epilepsy

I got this!

I love it. It fits perfectly, and also comes with extra links just in case.

u/shybinashvilleguy · 2 pointsr/Narcolepsy

Yeah, maybe you should get one then! LoL... Ask for it as a Christmas present! 😊 I got mine on Amazon for $39 and it has a USB drive so you can put as much info as you want on it. This specific one has gone up in price, but that might give you an idea of what to look for? :)

This is the one I have:

I got the 3 months included. If you get the 3 months, the per-month cost is low enough that you're effectively getting the device free and just paying for service. If you get the 6 months, the discount isn't noticeably bigger but then there are no bills to worry about for 6 months.

There are others, that's just the one I settled on, because I felt the deal was best among those I looked at. Some of the other units were more physically attractive, but not as well featured or priced.

I sweat a lot, so it's important to me that it be waterproof. Also, note that it connects to the "drop in" charging stand with two exposed metal contacts. (They're flat, won't scratch.) They corrode quickly, and it won't charge. I rub them thoroughly with a pencil eraser to clean them before every charge. (Sometimes I have to do it two or three times.) They also had to replace my whole setup once, they guarantee it forever so if there's a problem with the equipment, as long as you have service they'll just replace it.

I got this one. It works great.

This might be a good option. It was the most affordable device of it's kind with good reviews I could find. After the first month it's $24.95/month. (I have no affiliation with them.)

u/boobers3 · 1 pointr/AmItheAsshole

Your lack of imagination disappoints me. If I were you I would have gotten her a "Life Alert" necklace and made her wear it for a full school year. You get the benefits of peace of mind AND your kid learns a life long lesson.

u/dc_gay_man · 1 pointr/Epilepsy

I highly recommend this medical id bracelet. Check out the tips on what you might have engraved.

u/orangesunshine · 152 pointsr/pics

You should get him a bracelet too.

https://www.amazon.com/Do-Not-Resuscitate-Medical-Bracelet-M/dp/B016GCVSJ2/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1479413140&sr=1-1&keywords=do+not+resuscitate

You can get it printed out with his medical information too ... but I imagine in this case a simple DNR will suffice.

He should post the order from the doctor above his bed ... or on his front door as well so that if first responders do arrive they will see the official "DNR: pre-hospital authorization to not resuscitate this person"

u/flantagenous · 2 pointsr/FoodAllergies

We have this one I like that the symbols are just the food, not characters like the Allermates one.

u/petulantscholar · 2 pointsr/ClotSurvivors

Hey. We're mutant siblings. I'm on Xaralto, so it isn't too bad (I haven't had my blood checked in a few months, actually). [Here] (http://www.amazon.com/Medical-Alert-Stainless-Cuff-Bracelet/dp/B004TMHTRC/ref=sr_1_8?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1410881510&sr=1-8&keywords=medical+alert+bracelets+coumadin) is the bracelet I was wearing before I switched to Xaralto. I haven't updated it yet (although I need to).

Cheapest one on amazon is $9

I got this and it hooks into the phone line. It's kind of more for home situations but it works - no monthly fee either.

oh but hey, for just the low low price of $24.89 you can buy one of these:
