Typing this on an Omen 17t right now, and I have to say I completely agree. When I got this thing, I was blown away by the price to specs ratio, but it was a stuttery gaming mess. Even with G-Sync on my model I was getting terrible throttling and screen tearing due to the CPU throttling up and down. Honestly I would not consider buying unless you're willing to shell out a bit more in upgrades (anywhere from $8-$75ish depending which suggestions you choose to pick up) and apply a little bit of elbow grease (and literally some thermal grease).
If you're up for it, you can have the best of all worlds (cooling, performance, and price). I regularly idle between 45-50C, and I no longer get thermal throttling while gaming, almost never get past 85-90C while gaming, even lower if I have my fans on (detail below).
If you're curious what I did, here it is in order of (imo) most effective to least effective changes:
There's some other minor stuff you can do, but those are the big ones. I think it's worth it, but it's all personal preference. If I can clarify something/add pictures or whatever, just ask, or if I missed something big feel free to reply and add it.
TL;DR In order of effectiveness: Repaste your CPU/GPU (Arctic MX-4 is great), undervolt your CPU, get some laptop fans (I prefer ones that outtake), rip off the air filter webbing on the bottom laptop panel, elevate your laptop off your usage area.
This manipulation will make your laptop a bit more bumpy chassis-wise and I won't take any responsibility if something goes wrong :P (Don’t forget to think about the warranty)
I am a lurker but I can really understand your feelings since I was in the same situation (same laptop) before however, I was able to fix this, let me explain How to avoid TDP-downs:
After dealing with multiple slim laptops and also thanks Reddit for some data, I have concluded that these are the main types of throttling linked with the thermals:
My laptop was not thermal throttling but power limiting (except at TDP-high but that’s not the issue) so I skipped it.
To begin the fix you will need to buy these thermal pads (personally I bought two):
https://www.amazon.com/Thermal-Grizzly-Minus-High-Performance/dp/B00ZJS8RWQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1526667081&sr=8-1&keywords=TG-MP8-120-20-10-1R
So, I have sacrificed my laptop to check it, and after removing the black foil there are indeed some VRMs that are not under the heat sink. I have a very empirical way to find them (I don’t have a thermal camera unfortunately).
Launch TS Bench from ThrottleStop and then on the back of the computer, near the CPU, try to find very hot components (the ones that are barely too hot to touch) then place 3-4 thermal pads on them so that it can reach the chassis of the laptop.
Of course this is not enough, and that’s where the cooler joins in, I found two coolers that are really useful:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F3971YK/ref=twister_B01F3971X6?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
https://i.imgur.com/8IpUd4b.jpg
The cross-flow fan is easier and cheaper to use however it is not as efficient as the next one, the laptop will be able to, at long term and at least, use 14W at 24°C ambient temperature. However, I would still buy it for travels etc.
This one is not hard to do but requires some money but I suppose that budget won’t be your issue since the laptop itself is quite expensive already.
For this you will need:
https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NF-A14-industrialPPC-2000-140x140x25mm-2000rpm/dp/B00KESSI2A/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1526667148&sr=1-1&keywords=B00KESSI2A
https://www.amazon.com/140mm-Black-Grill-Guard-screws/dp/B01M2YI7BM/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1526667587&sr=1-3&keywords=fan+grill+140mm
https://www.amazon.com/FAN2USB-12V-USB-Converting-Adapter/dp/B00MNB40ZU/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1526667190&sr=8-1&keywords=FAN2USB
https://www.amazon.com/Urbo-Adjustable-Heat-Vent-Elevate-Notebooks/dp/B01I0KN91I/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1526667370&sr=8-2&keywords=urbo+stand
The hole is where we are going to place the fan and the height will help the fan to get more air, so that is very important.
https://www.amazon.com/Uxcell-Nylon-Resistant-Cable-White/dp/B00UJ95URU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1526667534&sr=8-1&keywords=Cable+Tie+Set+400
Optionally you can also buy a voltage regulator to turn it off but yeah unplugging the USB do the work too haha:
https://www.amazon.com/Zalman-Fan-Speed-Controller-FANMATE-2/dp/B000292DO0/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1526667258&sr=1-1&keywords=FANMATE2
After it is done and placed your laptop on it, you should be able to play all night without seeing the laptop throttling.
I tried to exceed the 15W, but this step is probably impossible, with the cooling I was able to stay a few more seconds at almost 30W but even after dealing with max TDP via Throttlestop, it throttles down. I just think that HP has limited its device to 15W for long term state (no matter the thermals or power) which is quite understandable but still it would be nice to unlock it.
I have for instance set the TDP max at 16W with ThrottleStop (so just a little bit more) and it still throttles after around 30 seconds to 15W with the cooler, I don’t know if I will give up but with -100mV undervolting I am able to reach STABLE 2.8ghz at full load, at 15W, so it is not that bad for a convertible 13-inch laptop.
I would like to post more photos however I am on a trip for months, so I can't right now.
Feel free to ask me any questions!
EDIT: formatting because 1st post
EDIT 2:
Here is how I placed my thermal pads:

I have also stressed my laptop for almost 15min non-stop with my cross-flow fan, here are the results showing a stable performance:

I'm slightly older if that really matters. Here's my advice.
One thing you can do right now without buying anything is to remove the stickers off of your laptop. Seriously, it makes a difference.
For all my recommendations I'm going to list price first as I imagine budget being a concern.
$5 - Do you only use the external drive when at your desk? If so, mounting it to the corner of the desk, the wall, (or if you ever pick up an external monitor, the back of that) might look cleaner.
I use this stuff to stick things - https://www.amazon.com/Scotch-051141397252-Extremely-Mounting-414P-ST/dp/B018GKCI82/ You can find it at stores like Target.
With all the cables coming out of your laptop, I think a USB hub would really help your setup as all of the cables would go directly into one place. If your laptop has a USB-C port and supports charging over it, you can get a USB-C hub so you can connect peripherals and charging over one cable.
$15 - If you don't have USB-C, something like this looks good - https://www.amazon.com/Anker-4-Port-Macbook-Surface-Notebook/dp/B00XMD7KPU/
It has four USB 3.0 ports and is very clean and small. However, the cable is a bit short.
Around $79 - If you do have USB-C, I have this hub and it's pretty good, however the cable is short and can feel a bit loose at times.
$25 - A basic colored mousepad might look cleaner if you want to go for that look. I have this mousepad and recommend it, but it's all personal preference.
$35 - I think you should pick up a headphone stand so the grease and oils don't get on your laptop screen, I recommend this one - https://www.amazon.com/Satechi-Aluminum-Headphone-Stand-Holder/dp/B019PI9QFC/
It gives you three extra USB 3.0 ports, a headphone jack and comes in four different colors, and has a solid aluminum build. If you don't need those extras, this stand is still aluminum and comes in at $12 - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GZFX6ND/
Probably around $100-$150 - The biggest upgrade you can make here I think is an external monitor and keyboard. It would improve your setup's ergonomics significantly. This desk looks pretty small, so I would recommend something no bigger than 24 inches in screen size. The resolution of the screen and such would depend on what you want and your laptop's power. However, I highly recommend at least 1920x1080 resolution.
$25 - If you ever do decide to upgrade to an external monitor, you probably wouldn't be able to use two screens on your desk, and the closed laptop would take up way too much space. I would recommend this laptop stand - https://www.amazon.com/Vertical-Adjustable-OMOTON-Aluminum-Chromebook/dp/B0769G51R7/
I have it myself and it's very well built, adjustable, and makes things a lot cleaner if you use an external monitor. It has branding on one side but if you flip it you can just use the side with no branding so it looks super clean. You can make it very stable on the desk with some simple double-sided tape.
That's all I have for now. Enjoy your setup!
I have the Mantiz Venus eGPU setup with my 980ti in my X1C6 and it's OK, definitely buggy and problematic at points (like using third party cables, driver updates, USB ports don't work well) but it's way better than the Lenovo Graphics Dock I was using earlier.
As for accessories, I bought this stand which I like a lot. There's so many types, so if you need one, there's plenty to choose from. I also bought a USB-C to 4 port USB-A hub from Aukey that fixes the USB problem on the eGPU.
One minor note, if you use a kensington lock, make sure you know it works with the unit first, one of my cables works and one doesn't. It had to do with the length of the kensington connector, for models where something sticks out permanently they don't seem to work (more portable ones) versus ones that are more permanent seem to work fine. I can elaborate on this if need be.
I think the HDR panels are in high demand, but I highly recommend it. It's a beautiful screen on my unit, and the brightness is great.
I own or have owned all the ones I linked below. I don't use my laptop as a desktop so it's not connected to any of my monitors. The reason I bought the stands is to house the laptop when not in used or when I connect it to my TV.

I used to have a cooling pad (Zalman NC-2000) - it worked well with many Windows notebooks, because they usually have a air intake at the bottom, because, most cooling pads "push" the air towards the notebook.
Doesn't help anything with a Macbook though. Macbooks take their air from all open ports (keyboard for example). The heat is let out through the aluminum body and the side fans of course.
So, "pushing" the air towards the notebook with cooling pads doesnt help. One could argue that cooling the body would help, but trust me, it doesnt.
When idle (with Chrome (4-5 Tabs), iTunes, Mail and Skype opened), the macbook had about 55°C.
With the cooling pad in idle mode, it had about 55°C as well.
When gaming, it was 90-100°C with both as well.
What help though, was a stand that raises the notebook.
These ones do help though:
Belkin Loft Stand
or this
TwelveSouth HiRise
because there will be much room UNDER the notebook for the air to ventilate.
I am now at 45°C idle / 80°C gaming.
Hope this helps :)
I have my laptop connected to a metal 'dock' that keeps it in the vertical position and the fans are completely unobstructed. I have it connected to a external display and a keyboard and mouse
The dock I have:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0769G51R7/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_HfBXDbWAKPHC0

Setup was easy, the arm rotates on 2 axes, but it's not telescopic. Works for me. It comes with a tool that supposedly locks the arm in place, though I'm still able to move it up and down. Other than that, I'm pretty happy.
It's this one For the price it's really good. Has rubber bumpers everywhere so your laptop is sitting nice and tight in place. Also you can save some desk space by pushing your laptop up. :)
I personally use the Crane Stand Plus and I love it. It's quick and easy to set up, and actually really sturdy. You can tighten the joints on it so it's not going to move at all. Granted, I DJ mostly weddings, so portability is huge.

I have a 13HD on a home-made VESA adapter connected to an Ergotron Arm and really like the setup.
If you are talking a tabletop stand, and are okay with just landscape orientation you can use:
Reddit liked my last battlestation, so I decided to post my new, more portable solution.
My new battlestation was made under slightly more constraints. Everything I own fits into a single suitcase, as I moved to a New York City for work. When I got here, I found that my two laptops made a very unergonomic and uncomfortable workstation. TO remedy that problem, I sourced a few parts of Amazon.
I bought a stand for my tablet, two laptop stands meant for DJs, a wireless mouse and keyboard and a kneeling chair. Everything breaks down and fits into my suitcases except for the chair, which I would probably leave behind if I am forced to move again.
The tablet is used as a TV. I use it to watch documentaries, shows streamed from youtube, hulu, netflix or thepiratebay. The internal speakers on the tablet are a bit quiet, so I have them streaming to a Logitech UE Boom Mini. I've owned the two laptops since starting university - a Lenovo x200, and a x201 I bought a few years later to replace the x200 when it stopped detecting a battery. They're both pretty old now, but the x201 still manages to play league of legends (barely). The x200 (right) is hooked up to a set of Steelseries Siberia v3 headphones that I use for skype, or music / shows when my roommates are watching something else on the big TV, or are having loud sex. A small and surprisingly weak fan is constantly plugged in and does do a bit to keep me cool. I'll have to revisit the cooling solution when summer hits again.
I've considered upgrading the laptops, but then I figured I shouldn't be spending a lot of time inside gaming anyways. Instead, I bought a new snowboard for the upcoming season.
I bought a great laptop stand for DJ use with an integrated fan:

Thanks! Here is the link to what I used, it is pretty good construction and comes with cable clips to manage all the wires:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K7NDBZQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s03?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I also got some adhesive cable management things that I stuck onto the bottom of the laptop stand so if I needed to remove my laptop, the positions of the cables wasn't affected and I could hook it all back up easily.

It elevates the laptop and provides better ventilation.
Been playing through an Aguilar Tonehammer DI for the past few weeks at home and I'm loving it. I've got an at home setup now of the Aguilar->small mixing board->monitoring headphones and have them all on one of these with a laptop also run into the board to play along with or use with Ableton or whatever. Such a satisfying compact setup for home practice.
Just got one of these. Seems to do the job pretty well and can definitely recommend it for some more vertical space--the middle rack is almost exactly the same size as the JU-06.
By the way, yes that link you shared was the right shelf. They’re attached to cheap monoprice speaker stands. I removed the telescoping bit and just use the base and main tube part of the stand. The threads don’t exactly match the Avantone threads in the bottom of the speaker but they do thread in far enough without stripping threads.

My aunt sent me something like this for my rehab https://smile.amazon.com/Ultra-Large-Adjustable-Foldable-Aluminum-Lightweight/dp/B07G7546RW/ You can adjust it so the laptop screen is in front of your face and the keyboard is angled down a ways so you don’t have to lift your arms at the shoulders to type. Can you get a piece of plywood cut to put under your couch cushions? You’d have to measure the size of the couch frame under the cushions, and I think Lowe’s or Home Depot will do a couple simple cuts. Or maybe there’s a building supply reuse store near you that has a piece cheaper. And then put a vertical bed pillow behind your back so there’s less room behind you and you sit more upright?
Also, set a timer on your computer or phone for the 30 minute reminder. =)
That makes all your work moving house all the more amazing!

$25 Open Box, directly for Projector

or alternatively, buy a $40 monitor arm, to open up the space on your desk, and a vertical laptop stand (Like this $16 one, although there are nicer ones)—and coincidentally that's what's on the screen in your YouTube video!
I also always recommend that same long mouse pad, but without a logo ($13).
For pencils and such, you can get a small organizer at Target, and just throw everything in there as a "catch all."
Otherwise, everything about this looks very personal and lived in which is nice to see how people work and stay productive.
Mount IT Laptop + Monitor works pretty good.
Sure, I can add those...

I would mount this on the left side of the desk, left of the left legs if you know what I mean, that way it’s out of the way, has enough airflow and cables wont touch the ground (except the charger, i have to take this with the laptop everytime i leave the house.
What’d you think?
I got the same thing as OP: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078RD7R26
Word of advice, esp to OP, if it is the same dock as I have, aside for the photo, I wouldn’t keep the Apple logo faced up like it is, this stand blocks the rear vent enough that’s it’s not allowing the computer to properly cool. Unfortunately Apple logo has to be upside down.
Nice setup OP!
Yeah, these combined with some cheap Odyssey stands make for a pretty decent tabletop setup (my current setup).
I use this and it gives a great angle to view the laptop screen!

If you want to take a step further, I’d recommend an

I did this to my desk and now it’s like a full desktop setup :’) next step now is affording an external monitor...
There are none that are proper for that laptop, you'll either cover up vents or won't be able to plug in cables to the back. Here is what I'm using with my 15r3 and a LG 27mb85r QHD monitor: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K7NDBZQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
You can get just the laptop stand, or a combo that can also mount a vesa compatible monitor. Be aware though in the picture they actually have the laptop tray mounted upside down, the bottom lip that keeps the laptop from sliding is obscured because of the improper assembly. They are great for decreasing footprint of your computer setup.
None of the folio type cases will give you an angle to draw and rest your hand on. Not rigid enough. I ended up with an adjustable laptop stand thats mostly all metal (aluminum). It folds flat for portability. From amazon m “Nulaxy Adjustable Laptop Stand” https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F1LHZTM?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

This version) looks like a traditional music stand.
You got a nice setup going on here, I like the consistency of the color theme. Idk what's beside your laptop and monitor, it looks like a pillow. Maybe get that out and move your laptop beside the monitor with a nice stand. You may not notice now, but the continued pressure over your laptop screen will damage it overtime. Also some red LEDs could give your setup a lot more life.

It's kind of a pricey laptop mount but it allows a full swivel that you can arch in every direction with height adjustment so you can place your laptop in just about any position you could possible want. It's just clamped onto the desk with two tightening pressure bolts and it is on there so secure, you could tug on it with all your strength and it wouldn't come off unless you unscrew it.

I use this one. It’s got more than one angle, it won’t slip on your desk, and it’s pretty sturdy. I’ve had no issues with it so far. Doesn’t raise the tablet though. Maybe pair it with a monitor stand riser?
Another option is to mount it to an arm. You can attach a laptop tray to an arm and put the Cintiq on that.
Yeah, it's no compatible, as fas as I know the MSP has a crack where the stand inserts itself but CP doesn't have it, it does have a little canal but I don't see how it would enter being it too shallow. I think Wacom recommends a Kensigton's one, this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NCJHM2D/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_ep_dp_BaP3ybW3WMP1H?th=1 and another, they have page a of dealers around the globe with stands: http://www.wacom.com/en-tr/support/faqs/cintiq%20pro%2013%20-%2016/are%20there%203rd%20party%20stands%20wacom%20would%20recommend.

I have a 3M LX550. Using it with a ThinkPad. External monitor sits beside it, setup as a two-monitor system. I like it. I like that the bottom can have clamps to clamp to the desk, or regular legs.
I've seen lots of places say that the m-audio speakers die about a year later. Hoping that's not the case with me. Did you leave your powered on all the time, or did you shut them off when not in use?
I shut them off unless I need speakers, and I'm hoping that the ones that die are left on all the time, but I kind of doubt that.
Thanks!
