My doctor said there's no evidence that colace (those stool softeners they tell us all to take) is particularly effective. She said polyethylene glycol is a much better choice.
Also, put your feet up on a stool when you're pooping (to bring your knees closer to your torso) and get a little exercise if you're having trouble getting things moving. And try to resist the temptation to drink less water so you won't pee so much.

Like the other's said: Fiber. However increasing your water intake will also loosen up the stool. If it continues to be a problem there is also MiraLax which is a stool softener (that doesn't make your bowels explode, but is a laxative).

I put it is my oatmeal, coffee or orange juice.
I also do 1/2 cup flax seed and hemp seed. Equal parts mixed into oatmeal. The hemp is very nutritious and my husband can even eat it plain!
