i would also suggest:

on campus housing:

  • single room accommodation
    • the student isn't charged the full price of the single since it's an accommodation
  • air conditioning
    • i know this isn't a necessity for all days at least for me. if you feel you need A/C and N is your only dx, drive home every possible reason why you need it. so think of your absolute days* if you have a dysautonomia or similar dx they're far less likely to fight you on this
  • building with elevator if stairs cause severe fatigue/pose a safety issue

    class:

  • ability to use accessible textbooks. for some reason Kurzweil works on the disability office's computers but i've never gotten it to work on mine. i have some additional info down below on other options
    • the way my college does this doesn't work. at all. for some reason kurzweil works on their computers but i've never gotten it to worn on mine. i have some additional info down below on other options
  • permission to record lectures/use computer for assistive device
    • if you have a tablet+stylus I highly recommend Notability
    • permission to use a smart pen
      • some schools Disability Resource Offices lend these and give out notebooks for them i.e. livescribe echo
  • permission for attendance leniency due to disability
  • permission to take breaks during class
  • ability to use accessible desk
    • for me this is a big one. some of our classrooms have those desks with a half-table that sits partially in front of you. these were a safety risk for me bc i could fall out of it and hurt myself. i also ran the risk of knocking over my expensive and necessary electronic devices

      tests:

  • permission to take breaks during longer tests
  • 1.5x or 2x time on tests
  • separate testing location
  • permission to use reading software on tests
    • we use Kurweil. It highlights each word as it reads. headphones are provided, but i prefer bringing earphones.
  • permission to write directly on tests if you have a hard time with bubbling in scantrons properly
    • permission to not use scantrons
  • permission to type and/or use voice recognition software to answer questions if you have a hard time with automatic behavior or writing neatly due to stamina/fatigue

    other suggestions:

  • at the beginning of each semester, i give my professors narcolepsy info for professors that i edited so it's specific to me. the original is from narcolepsy network.
  • learning ally (accessible books)
  • if you have a tablet:
    • Adobe Scan to scan class handouts and other things so you can write on them
    • Voice Dream for reading PDFs and eBooks
    • Liquid Text for studying –– you can link your handwriting to a certain page, take a freehand screenshot and drag it onto your workspace, and more. there's a one-time cost for students to get the pro version
    • things accessed on the web can often be downloaded as PDFs to use in Voice Dream and/or Notability/other note taking apps
  • on campus/outside resources:
    • Educational Opportunity Program / Student Support Services
      • eligbility –– first-generation student, disabled, and/or low income. veteran status may also be a factor.
      • may have extra tutoring help beyond what's offered to every student
      • may help pay for financial aid
      • may have opportunities for social enrichment i.e., going to theme parks, museums, etc at little/no cost
    • ACCES-VR. the name varies by state, but you can look it up to see what i'm referring to!
      • can help pay for school/textbooks based on financial need
      • may pay to get you a neuropsych eval (evaluates your memory and other things to further determine where your needs lie)
      • may pay for an evaluation for assistive tech (i.e. tablet, computer) and lend it to you, insurance included. after you have gained meaningful employment, it's yours (or at least that's how it works here)
      • may pay for bookshare (accessible books) membership. renewed annually by the student
    • Occupational Therapy for developmental disabilities (N counts as a dev. disability if DXed before early 20s, forgot what age specifically. anyway that technicality doesn't matter here)
      • teaches you how to be a more effective student in spite of stamina constraints
    • if you sleep weird so you're achey, physical therapy
    • Neurofeedback
      • i thought this was bullshit but it's actually made the slightest difference in my fight to stay awake
    • Light therapy
      • this helps me immensely to stay awake in the darker months. this is the one i own!!

*when applying for any type of disability aid you go by your worst days

when i looked for accommodations, i looked up ones for ADHD. since narcolepsy tends to manifest as ADHD to outsiders looking in, i thought adhd accommodations would also be suitable for N.

well .... that's all i could think of. best of luck!!!

Note: This is a copy of my recent post from this thread. http://www.reddit.com/r/tdcs_brainstimulation/comments/1gyalu/uncrowded_front_page_great_so_how_about_tils/

Anecdote: I've been using an 808nm 200mw laser (3 diodes, 66mw per diode) for 7+ months with excellent results (they get better over time)...especially mental endurance and access to stored memories. I have zero affiliations with anyone or any product but here is what I've been using. http://www.vetrolaser.com/

I've also used the 660nm Tendlite with very good results as well. http://www.amazon.com/Anti-inflammatory-Pain-Joint-Management-Fibromyalgia/dp/B004QECAU4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372727739&sr=8-1&keywords=tendlite

This has most of the new studies listed. http://www.reddit.com/r/Nootropics/comments/1dccuq/lowlevel_laser_therapy/

The limit for skin is 320mw/cm2. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2796659/

There is an inverted U-shaped dose response curve so make sure you only do 2days on/1day off per location...at most. Every other day also seems to work.

Here is a recent article by one of the foremost photobiomodulation (that's what it's officially called now) researchers, Tiina Karu. She argues that photobiomodulation should be considered a drug equivalent. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23600376

Here is an excellent resource by a photobiomodulation self experimenter. http://heelspurs.com/led.html

That should get you guys started. I hope this amazing technology improves your lives. =)

If you have any questions I've posted extensively on photobiomodulation here. http://www.longecity.org/forum/topic/63228-lostfalcos-extensive-nootropic-experiments/
There are many more studies and and few other anecdotal reports listed there. I sincerely apologize for linking to my thread. There's just SO much info and most of your questions can be answered there.

Here is an expensive nicer one I LOVE:

300W Red Light Therapy Lamp Red... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RBRM15H?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Here is a much cheaper bulb that is great to start off with:

SGROW 24W Red Led Light Red 660nm... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JW9RZ7K?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I’m no scientist but basically Red Light stimulates your mitochondria and helps the cells it comes in contact with perform better. Proven to heal skin faster, help pain, etc. The bright light is rewarding on its own, feels like your sitting in the morning sun. Terrific way to get started in gloomy days.

u/HoogaHealth · 1 pointr/Biohackers

Glad to hear you're enjoying red light therapy and are happy with the Platinum LED BIOMAX900!

If you ever find the need for another panel, we are a small business that just launched our new 300W panel on Amazon. The wavelengths of our panel at 660 and 850nm, it has a really high irradiance (>200mW/cm2 at the surface), built in cooling fan, low EMF emissions, and comes with a sturdy hanging kit and door mount. We sell it for only $250, since we found that a lot of the lights out there are just really over priced.

Check it out if interested at Hooga 300W Red Near Infrared Light Therapy Device otherwise, enjoy the benefits of red light therapy with your BIOMAX900 :)

u/larping-lizards · 3 pointsr/redscarepod

Yooo I just bought this sun lamp and I'm excited to use it. It's $30 and has brightness & temperature settings which seems nice since I'd like to get a nice cozy warm glow going alllll winter :) hope it works lol

u/Kamelasa · 1 pointr/loseit

> Not sure if I recommend the fancy lamps. The one I got was $70 and whether it helped or not, it's pretty flimsy and feels like a bit of a rip-off.

Which one did you get? I got Happylight Deluxe for $149 and it made all the difference in the world. I hear you about the crap emotions, but this gave me a zing similar to real sunshine on a bright day. (I actually got it "free" through Airmiles, though.) I agree with you about the daylight bulbs in regular lamps. Excellent choice.

Sunlight stimulates melanocyte-forming hormone, which stimulates both libido and fat-burning, so no wonder it's hard to feel good and lose weight in winter in non-tropical climates.

u/Emeraldcarr · 4 pointsr/DSPD

I think you are in the wrong subreddit but I'll explain and try to help. DSPD stands for Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome. Most of us here have trouble getting to sleep at a normal, socially acceptable time (1:00am is on the early side for me). I for one would love to be on the schedule you're on!

As far as your problem goes, there's a few things that you might try since caffeine does not seem to help you. One is getting up and walking around outside. I'm not sure where you live, but if you can tolerate being outside and having a walk it might help and even a gym workout can help you stay awake. Also not sure how far away from the equator you are, but even if the days aren't very short light therapy might help you. I use these:

Re-Timer Light Therapy Glasses - Gen 2: Australian Made for High Safety and Efficacy https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GGN0PAO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_jrUADb4YMWDB3

Basically, you wear them for an hour when you need to be awake.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/Psychonaut

As /u/linqua posted, you just experienced the Ganzfeld effect! Plus a little bit more.

There things called 'mind machines' and 'dream machines' which are specifically crafted for this kinda thing. They consist of glasses with LEDs on the inside of the lenses and headphones connected to a little piece of electronics which runs them.

Here's a popular one that's been around for a while:
http://www.amazon.com/MindPlace-Proteus-USB-Meditation-Machine/dp/B00061URFG

I've always wanted to try one, and you might have just convinced me to buy one or maybe make one. It would actually be a relatively simple project:

  • Raspberry Pi or Arduino
  • Ping pong balls, stick some LEDs in them, would need an additional chip to connect the LEDs to to interface with the Pi or Arduino
  • Headphones
  • Put it all in a box and wire some potentiometers (variable resistor knobs) to the device
  • Relatively simple software to drive it all (including synthesizing the binaural audio, which is very easy, you just decide on your target frequency X and then generate two sounds with freq Y and Z where Y-Z=X, the offset creates low frequency oscillations which the brain allegedly syncs to) and receive input from the pots
  • Put it in a small box

Here's one on MAKE, it doesn't include the sound part, and he made his own circuit with some chips:
    http://www.instructables.com/id/MAKE-a-mind-control-hypnosis-dream-machine-Cheap/?ALLSTEPS

Anyways yeah this would be a fun project :D
u/GoldenLucius · 1 pointr/nfl

I have this one by Northern Light Technology.

It's an expensive one, but I find it very helpful and I recommend it. It's definitely not as effective as real sunlight, but it is better than getting very little/no sunlight during these dark days.

u/SparklePantsJr · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Gimme some Tech Daddi!

So, because I have just recently started studying online, I do all my work at my dressing table, in our bedroom. However, I don't have a very bright light on my desk so when I'm studying later in the day, it's very dull and I can't see my work clearly. I could really do with this light to help me see more clearly and study to my heart's content (or, y'know, until I get bored/tired...)!

Edit: I hope you don’t mind, I would like to change my entry. I’m trying to lose weight and my scales are broken so I could really do with a new set to measure my weight accurately. Something like this. I hope that’s okay. :)

u/beingisdoing · 2 pointsr/getdisciplined

Find out how many hours of sleep you need and go to bed at the appropriate time, including time for falling asleep. So if you need 8 hours of sleep, you usually take 30 minutes to fall asleep, and you aim to wake up at 5:30am, then you should be in bed by 9pm. There's no way around math.

I also suggest:

  • Light: As soon as you wake up, open the blinds and let whatever morning light into your space. You can also get a high intensity, full spectrum lamp, like this one. Light signals your body that it's time to wake up. Work in bright, naturally lit, spaces throughout the day. And likewise, at bedtime, turn the lights down low and avoid screens.

  • Food: Eating helps some wake up. I opt for something fatty and avoid proteins because proteins make me sleepy after consuming them. I eat my proteins at lunch when I can take a short nap. And avoid eating before bedtime, at least a few hours. Also, avoid coffee if you can. If you aren't willing to give it up, then stop drinking coffee before lunch time. Caffeine has a half-life and can disrupt your sleep.

  • Exercise: Don't do it near bedtime because it tends to increase the likelihood of restlessness. Studies have shown that if you do it in the morning, however, your sleep at night improves.

  • Routines: Create enjoyable morning and evening routines to bookend your sleep. This will help train your body. For example, in the morning you might want to meditate, exercise, and do things that make you feel energized. In the evening you might want to journal, gently stretch and breathe, and have a cup of tea to wind down and feel calm before sleep.

It could always be a placebo. If it's one like this one, nobody seems to know the distance you need to be for 10,000 lux, so most likely it's very close (6" or less).

And yeah, they are supposed to be obscenely bright. They have to trick your brain into thinking you're getting sunshine, after all!

You could try cranial electrotherapy or a variation thereof like TDCS, such as a Bob Beck brain tuner or the fisher Wallace device, they have proven to be very good in clinical studies. Various brands make them the US military use it for PTSD & its cleared by the FDA for use in opiate withdrawal, best of look & take care

The natural light thing is big. Get a sun lamp/mood lamp if you don't get a lot of natural light at home or work. I take meds - I am on the severe end, and meds get me about 85% of the way to normal, but the above tips definitely help with the other 15%. A sun lamp makes all the difference in the world in the wintertime when there's not a lot of daylight and most days are grey anyway. This is the one I use.

u/ptword · 1 pointr/Dentistry

I'm prepared to not see much difference from the mouthwash, at least, for the lower gums, which was SRPed three weeks ago. But I'll still give it a shoot. I might actually start using this mouthwash right away to see if it helps the upper gums (still don't look totally healed from SRP 1 week ago). I'd use it right after the chlorhexidine mouthwash.... hopefully, they don't cancel each other out...

I've been considering an ultrasonic toothbrush and maybe even one of these light therapy devices, but I'm hesitant to splurge so much money on something that might not justify the investment.

The only reason I'd get an ultrasonic/infrared device would be just to see whether it can help stimulate bone/gum regeneration somehow, hence, why I wonder whether the investment is justified. For better plaque removal, I'd just try to master the technique with a manual toothbrush, which is what I'm already doing.

I'm still clueless about whether xylitol affects all bacteria indiscriminately or just some types...

I needed a boost of knowledge on something.
So i watched 2001 a space odyssey. After that I meditated with this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00061URFG?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_title

This simulated the end scene where he was gaining all the knowledge and became the star child.

While listening to the music playing when the apes first discover the monolith song. The eee song.
After that I drew that symbol and just wrote that poem. I then drew that symbol on an object I needed to help me.

Give it a try for a few weeks and if it doesn’t do anything return it. Alibaba also have joov knockoffs for ~300 that are much larger from the same company.

Good luck

I wanted to address how it made you feel better! I wonder if that is a component of SAD (seasonal affective disorder) and the light acted as therapy for you.

I bought a ‘happy lamp’ in February to address some serious SAD I was dealing with and it made a tremendous difference. I added a link to the one I bought off Amazon. Best of luck!

I use these:

I start wearing those at ~9:30 pm, and have them on until I go to bed at ~1 am. I use a red light bulb (you can get 3W RGB bulbs for under $10 also) as a reading light after I go to bed.

I also use one of these after I wake up and until I leave for work aside from when I'm in the shower:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H78CJV2/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Doing that has let me shift to about 3 hours earlier than I was before which lets me work a normal job without feeling awful all the time.

We studied this extensively at a previous job I had and it was pretty effective for people. Here's a sample study we did on hormone shifts with the same basic thing (we used blue led glasses and orange safety glasses instead, but same effect):

Check out the happy light -- There are less expensive ones, but my friend has this one and I really enjoy the hue the light emits. I think it really can help with depression and SAD.

u/whiskeyjane45 · 1 pointr/funny

I have problems going to sleep period. The best thing you can do is get on a sleep schedule. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every night. (I know this is hard to do in college). Cut out caffeine in the evenings. Don't have any illuminated screens in your room once you turn the lights off. You can also try getting lights that mimic sunrise and sunset like this alarm clock. The light dimming will trigger your body to prepare for sleep naturally. You can get lightbulbs that do the same but I thought the alarm clock version would be cheaper and more portable. They are a little expensive, but well worth it.

Strange because I was just barely looking at http://www.amazon.com/Tendlite-Therapy-Joint-Pain-Relief/dp/B004QECAU4 .

A lot of anecdotal stories for this product but how well does it actually work? I have no idea. Some say you need more precise light therapy. For me, I just want to decrease nightly inflammation in my knees. Anyone have experience with that?

u/kolm · 2 pointsr/science

If your light bulb doesn't die on you early on, this baby is a damn good way to start the day. Combine with a more high-lux (come on, spell check, lux is a standard unit) photon pump on your breakfast table like this and some decent workplace lighting, and you push through Skandinavian winter without even feeling much of the short days.

And it is probably not only the lack of morning light alone; staring at LED screens in late evening appears to dampen the build-up of melatonin (too lazy now, google yourself).

I spent close to 200 bucks on it, but my bf who suffers from SAD loves it so far. On Amazon in the states you can get it for around 150.

Mine are both unfortunately somewhat expensive.

A sunrise alarm clock. This is the one I have. It works great but has apparently been discontinued. It was $60 when I bought it. Helps me to wake up and actually feel rested. Usually I wake naturally at dawn, but dawn is much later than when I have to get up in winter.

SAD Lamp. The one I have is portable.
