Yes, these will all hurt your eyes. The only time you can look at the sun without the threat of damage is during a full eclipse when the corona is seen around the moon.

They make special glasses for sun viewing. They aren't crazy expensive on amazon. Even with these you really can't look at the sun for more then a few mins.

Nasa also points out that number 14 welders glass is pretty good for eclipse viewing but you'll probably have to order it in from somewhere. Most welding places, around me anyway, don't keep anything over 11 in stock.

Your best bet is to project the sun on a wall through a telescope or binoculars.

You want a shade #14 or better, which are annoying to find. The place I usually get my welding supplies only has #5 in stock, which is all you need for oxyacetylene, and McMaster only has up to #12, more than enough for arc welding. You need something like this, but since you can get a pack of 5 disposable eclipse glasses for about the same price, I don't know why you'd bother.

They're kind of overpriced... but here you go.

Also, I can't imagine light pollution being an issue, I've always been able to see it no problem, and I live in the capital of California. Not that it competes with London, but its not a small city. Just look from your front yard or something with those glasses on and you'll be fine.

I would like to point this out:

Do yourself a favor and make the short trip up to the Nashville area where you can see "Totality" for up to 2 minuites and 40 seconds.

I also recommend a good pair of solar sunglasses and maybe a good pair of binoculars with a solar filter.

Looks like these are the best bets for viewing glasses, both being the cheap cardboard version: Amazon and Mastermind.

Will have to talk to my neighbour, who's a welder, about other more industrial options.

The sun is not any more dangerous during an eclipse than during any other time. But if you're really worried, get a pair of eclipse glasses. And, you know, set yourself a phone alarm? I guess?
