Of course the guy at the shop is going to say that, he wants to sell you a new bike. ;)

As /u/blackjellybeans said grab some Shimano Deore hydraulic brakes and do it. They'll work much better than the cable brakes. You can even get them pre-assembled off places like Amazon or the like and put them on yourself easily enough.
