Last year I read So You've Been Publicly Shamed(www.amazon.com/dp/B00L9B7IRC/) by Jon Ronsson. It's a good read, and thought provoking. I recommend it.

Looking at this, though, I'm even more reminded of the words of Malcolm X on the occasion of the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

"Being an old farm boy myself, chickens coming home to roost never did make me sad; they've always made me glad"

In short, I'm conflicted. I often feel conflicted when circumstances call Malcolm X to mind.

I really wish someone other than Vox day would, effectively, re-write this book. His name has so much baggage that you can't just hand a copy out to normies.

Looking at his related books... (Holy shit, linking these are a nightmare due to Amazon's tracking buillshit in the URLs)

Nothing short and to the point, but some good stuff there for normies to read.

Anyone looking for concrete examples, here's a pretty neat book about it. From the guy who wrote that Men Who Stare at Goats book.

Off the top of my mind, specific books they've mentioned that I've enjoyed:
-
-Hitch 22 by Christopher Hitchens

-

-Open Letters by Vaclav Havel

-

-The Battle for Spain: The Spanish Civil War 1926-1939 by Antony Beevor

-

-So You've Been Publically Shamed by Jon Ronson

-

-Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe

-

I'll try to remember more and add to it as I can recall them.

EDIT

-Ghost Wars by Steve Coll

-

-Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS by Joby Warrick

-

-Both Ian Kershaw and Richard Evans' accounts of HItler, Germany, and the Third Reich in WWII

-

-Moynihan did a long interview in Vice about Karl Ove Knausgaard, so I would imagine maybe he's a fan

-

-Bad Blood by John Carryrou

-

-The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie

The book "So You've Been Publically Shamed" by Ron Jonson is eye-opening in this respect. Very, very sobering read. Highly recommend.

Hi guys,

Keep in mind when you're posting hilarious comedy about this guy's appearance, weight, perceived socioeconomic status, etc., that your cruelty is being directed at a real person. Yes, he made a dumb-dumb on the internet, one that he can't take back. Yes, pretty much all of Reddit is shitting on him today.

But keep in mind that we're a lighthearted comedy sub, one that generally requires its subjects to remain anonymous. Hatejerk threads aren't what we're about. I allowed this post because the news media have chosen to run with this story. However, keep the shenanigans confined to /r/iamverysmart, and know that hateful bullshit and witchhunting will result in bans.

For a more in-depth look at the kind of mob mentality that surrounds situations where someone makes a taboo comment on social media, I highly recommend Jon Ronson's So You've Been Publicly Shamed.

luv,
Tiff

Really?

I'll point to the Jian Ghomeshi case in Canada. Ghomeshi was found not guilty on all counts (he signed a peace bond on the last one, but it is not an admission of guilt). It was shown at trial that that the accusers had likely conspired to align their stories, and perhaps even lied under oath. And yet today, even the editor who chose to run an opinion piece Ghomeshi had written was forced to resign.

Ghomeshi is now unemployable. In a previous age there was no internet around with which to organize activities to protest people on an ongoing basis. Those that were accused of crimes, could move to a new town and start over.

The internet has turned our world into a village. And we are spying on each other.

It's actually much worse than Salem, it's like East Berlin under the Stasi, only half the time the government is snooping, and the other half of the time, we are semi-voluntarily handing over our data to big tech firms.

And we are not just talking about allegations of the kind Ghomeshi or Kavanaugh faced, even more innocuous actions can haunt people forever.

As for the profanity, I wasn't rude to you, and that's not much of an argument.

You can think I'm being hyperbolic, but all I can do is suggest a few sources.

This is a good one about the mountain of data you produce and how much of it can be retained; it tackles the dangers of the government accessing this information, but it's equally troubling if you substitute online mobs for big tech or government surveillance:

The other is about public shaming;

Please don't.

First, you only know one side of the story. Second, reviews are pretty useless if they are based on something other than your personal experience with a company. Third, we have no idea if this one guy who works there has any real impact on whether the actual business is legit or not. And finally, yelp is just going to delete them all (for the reasons I already stated) anyway.

The internet lynch mobs get out of control on stuff like this. The book So You've Been Publically Shamed covers a good bit of how dangerous and out of control these public shamings can be.

Well, it isn't like pizzagate is going to lead to any arrests right?

Sadly, we live in an age of endless witch hunts.

Not sure if you're trolling, but if you're serious about what you say, I recommend this book.

Food for thought at the very least.
