You don't necessarily need an optic, and you should not pick up a magnified optic (i.e scope) unless you intend to radio information to others, since it will rarely provide an actual advantage over unmagnified optics in airsoft and will usually tend to provide disadvantages such as eye relief and field of view issues.

You could probably pick up another battery and a good sling in place of the red dot, but if you find you need it:

The one I got on Amazon is only $30 and it hasn't let me down yet.

You have to understand that I am very, very cheap and very, very poor. Therefore I went with a budget optic that, all things considered, turned out to be of decent quality.

It is an updated model of UTG's 4-Inch Red/Green Dot Sight. Takes common watch-batteries that you can get a pack of four of at Home Depot for ~$10. In the bright, winter sun of California's badlands, both the green and red dots are sufficiently bright to easily acquire large or small targets (when set to maximum brightness). I sighted the scope in at 100 yards and since this is my first time using it, I can't tell you yet if it will hold zero very well. But so far, I highly recommend it.

And what else do I need for the gun? I already have:

  • a green/red dot scope this one

  • this half mask

  • Lancer Tactical goggles. ok I know they aren't that great but I'll be wearing them over my large-framed glasses so I hope I will be fine.

  • these gloves

  • 0.25g EF bio bbs

  • smart charger and 7.4v 1k mAh LiPo battery

Should I get into the gun and mess with some internals (stuff like shimming and radiusing the gearbox) or should I hold off for now?

Nice! I gotta build an AR eventually.

If you are looking for a cheap red-dot, I know UTG isn't exactly top of the line, but I got this one for my ruger 10/22 and it's worked great. In fact, I was at the range earlier today trying out my new revolver and my buddy tried it on his AR and said it was working pretty good.

what do you think of this one?

also why will the dot be bigger if I'm using an AK?

Ideally I need an enclosed RDS that comes with a flash hider for protection

If it's just for a .22 I'm sure either of them would be fine. Personally I really want a TRS-25 but I couldn't afford it right now so I ended up getting the UTG red/green dot

Mounted it to my AR and it's perfect, decent quality for the price and a nice bright red or green dot depending on what mood I'm in. I would take this one over the Tasco.

The specs state "no open sights"... maybe one of these?

This is a scope cover that reduces lens reflections.

It's designed to fit this scope, but it can be scaled to fit others.

I put a Leapers UTG on it, it’s pretty affordable and works well on the HiPoint carbine. Very enjoyable to plink with.

It's this one. It's a little different from the one they show. The end caps have a hard rubber casing. It has popup covers for the lenses too. Everything is metal except for the covers for the adjustment screws. It has a nice heft to it, doesn't feel cheap at all. I've only had it for a couple of weeks.

I have several of these red dots. On 22 rifles, AR-15, even an AR pistol. So far they work great. Really convenient with the flip up caps and choice of red or green dot. (user selectable). Rugged design too. http://www.amazon.com/UTG-4-Inch-Integral-Picatinny-Mounting/dp/B005UGIPUQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372715787&sr=8-1&keywords=utg+leapers+red+dot
