I hate to be that guy that says "Read the fuckin sticky", but, the bourbon guide is very very good here, and I used it when I ventured here from scotch land. Check it out on the sidebar, or just click here!

I like /u/rebo2's idea of getting smaller bottles to try and do a taste test, but i would definitely suggest going through the guide and start off by getting Buffalo Trace, Bulleit, and Maker's Mark, in that order. Make sure that by the time you buy your third bottle, you still have some left over in each of the other two bottles so you can compare. Setup a night where you can taste all 3 back to back to back. This will give you a chance to really compare the difference between low rye, high rye, and wheated bourbons. There is a reason why these 3 are recommended for beginners, you get a really great base for tasting everything else in Bourbon land.

My personal favorites of commonly purchasable items, Buffalo Trace, Makers, Wild Turkey 101, Jim Beam Black (far superior to the white label), Four Roses small batch, Elijah Craig 12, Eagle Rare, and Old Weller Antique 107.

For the Rye Whiskey, Sazerac Rye, High West Rendezvous Rye, Bulleit Rye, and Rittenhouse. I need to try a few more ryes to be honest, but i love the spicy flavors they have.

Invest in some real glassware, get some old fashioned glasses at least, and when you are ready get some Glencairn glasses. You can find them relatively inexpensive on Amazon, I linked the Glencairn set I purchased.

Read /u/texacer guide on reviewing whiskey. Also, watch this Highland Park video on nosing and tasting. These both helped me tremendously for appreciating and learning how to nose and taste whiskey. There is a ton of great info in both links.

Hope this helps, good luck and ask away any questions on this sub, I have found that this is my favorite sub here on Reddit, everyone is super awesome here. Remember, whiskey is best shared with friends, so bring some friends with you on your journey if you can.

glasses

TL;DR - Standard answer, the Glencairn glass (the official {Scotch} Whisk(e)y glass). My current favorite though is the Taylor'd Milestones Reserve Whiskey and Scotch Glasses available HERE

I'm by no means an expert, but I have tried many different shapes of glassware over the years... So, here are some of my experiences.

The standard highball/lowball, with their straight 🥃 (or even at times obtuse _/ ) sides, allows for too much area for many of the aromatics in the whisky to disperse and even escape, making the whisky very bland and uninteresting, thereby "weakening" or "taming" it a bit. Hence, this is where most people start.

Something with a bit of a bowl or tulip (_) to it is kind of the next step up. This helps to concentrate the aromas and can help to bring out some of the subtleties of a good whisky.

Then there is the Glencairn style glasses, which kind of combine the previous two. It is a slightly bowled base with the straightened tip of a lowball. This is the official Scotch Whisky glass, and does a really great job at really getting you intimately close with your whisky, bringing out even the slightest nuances. However, to me, this can be a bit much for whisky that is a little heavy on the nose.

So, the 3 different glasses that I have tried that use a very similar shape to the Glencairn, but widen the rim up a bit, thereby taming the nose ever so slightly, are the Canadian Glencairn, the Norlan, and the Taylor'd Milestones Reserve Whiskey and Scotch Glasses.

The Canadian Glencairn is a great glass but there are two things that bug me a bit about it. First off, it is slightly awkward to drink out of, as you nearly have to put the glass vertical before anything comes out. The second, much more minor issue, is that your hand is right on your whisky only separated by a very thin layer of glass, which will lead to warming up your whisky. Which you may or may not enjoy.

Then came the Norlan glass. It is essentially a Glencairn glass with some aerators in the bowl housed in a double walled tulip shaped glass, that way your hand will not warm up your whisky with a lingering enjoyment of a good dram. However, again, to me, it is just slightly awkward to sip from.

Enter the Taylor'd Milestones Reserve Whiskey and Scotch Glasses. And mentioned above, this is currently my favorite glass to enjoy a nice dram in. It is essentially a Glencairn this has an opening that is about 1.5 times the diameter (which can tame a slightly heavy nosing whisky just the right amount), and then a nice lowball type weight at the bottom of it. So, it feels great in the hand, and you don't have to have your hand right on the whisky if you don't want to. It also feels much more natural to sip from.

The link to the Taylor'd Milestones Reserve Whiskey and Scotch Glasses is at the top, but here are some links to some legit Glencairns.

The original Glencairn - 2 pack, 4 pack, or 6 pack

I would recommend that you use either the seller Stock Your Home or Our Pampered Home, as they both sell the official legitimate Glencairn glassware, and tend to be one of the lowest priced ones as well. There are a substantial amount of fakes out there! So, here are the same links, but for Stock Your Home (if available).

Original - 2 pack, 4 pack, or 6 pack

And then for Our Pampered Home (if available).

Original - 2 pack, 4 pack, or 6 pack

(Sorry for the delayed post, I've had a busy past couple of days)

All the best... Enjoy!

For some reason, Im drawn to these black trees for some sort of decoration, depending on how tall they are, they could be centerpieces maybe?

I like this wristband bracelet for bridesmaids to wear, if you have some, or even yourself, depending on your dress color.

I like the idea of black candelabras everywhere, I feel like they are very romantic/dark, if done right. Something like this minus the fake spiders, and these Bleeding candle sticks are very cool.

If you're serving punch, an intricate black punch bowl would look great. Maybe a bowl on every other table, since they're little?

Satin flower girl basket, but I think there is a whole set for this, with a guest book and ring pillow. The gems are white, but it looks like you could easily pop them out, and place them with purple.

Instead of having guests sign a guest book, you could frame this Map of Europe and take the glass out and have people sign it. It would look amazing with all the well wishes on it, but still have a neat background to it.

A set of these Apothocary jars, filled with candy or matches, placed at the bar, or around the cake table, just as little accents. And you could wrap them with a band of purple ribbon to help tie your colors together.

And lastly, I always love candles at a wedding I feel like they are the symbol of romance. Lots of candles, everywhere. They give off just the right amount of light.

Good luck, hope Ive helped just a little. <3

Thanks for the contest! I hope to see pics of how the wedding decorations look!!!

Plants! They're great to have, I have some bamboo right now. I love it. Here's a really pretty bonsai tree!

And you definitely need a crock pot! They're super handy to have, just throw some food in in the morning and come home to a super easy meal, plus leftovers!

An electric kettle is another essential! Especially if you love tea.

Cheap, cute end tables! I turned the top of mine into a chessboard! Fancy-s up my room a lot.

Here and here are some really nice shelves!

You definitely need a set of knives too!

A really awesome bottle opener!

Here are some really cool glasses.

Aaand the cutest sake set ever.

Okay I'll stop linking now. I just really love household-y things! :D

Thank you for the contest and I hope this list helps!

If it was a glass for me, I'd probably get a pair of the Glencairn mixer glasses (not the snifters) that are recommended above, but unless your girlfriend is a real whiskey snob she may not recognize that you've gotten her an "official" tasting glass.

If you are looking for something unique or something that she can enjoy both looking at and using, I'd recommend either of these. They catch the eye from across the room and are sure to be a welcome replacement to her plastic cup:

UNIQUE!!! Rox and Roll 4 Piece Old Fashioned Glass Set
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GBFDJME/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Gl1lzb10XCQMS

PERSONALIZED!!! Custom Engraved Old Fashioned Double Wall Rocks Whiskey Glasses - 7 oz - Personalized for Free
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N29R0KY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Ts1lzb33S8P61

CLASSY!!! Lenox Tuscany Classics Double Old Fashion Glass Set https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0095VPOKQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_KC1lzbVSN3P2A

I also personally like the Iceberg glasses that are on Amazon, but that's sort of an acquired taste, I like that the top is square and the bottom is complex, but you'd have to know that it matches her style.

Good luck!

> I'll have to do some research on what to buy and invest in something better.

A Glencairn glass is most popular, but there are others. You can get one for about $10 at some stores or online:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/B003TMCNI8/
http://www.amazon.com/gp/B005LR3P1I/
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003QX2JMA

> That seems a little pricey, and I don't know if my drinking habits will allow me to stretch a bottle across 6-8 nights.

Scotch is more expensive than bourbon. In my opinion, you won't find much below $50-60 that's well regarded. There are some cheaper options, but you'll run out of them eventually if you want to try something different each time. Additional price increases have started pushing many of the more flavorful malts you'll see recommended on here to $60-$80. That price range will provide you with many options; some of those options are higher proof, so you might be able to drink less or add water to your scotch. The base assumption is that these bottles are all 750 ml.

> So why is it looked down upon?

It's fine, but it's somewhat bland in my opinion. It's the highest volume single malt in the world, so it's mass produced at lowest cost. This is somewhat indicated by its price. To an extent (but not always), you get what you pay for (at this end of the market--not really true at $100+), which is why eventually you'll have to pay more.

> I'm starting to look towards the peaty end of the spectrum. Anything non-respectable there?

By no means are peated scotches the only respectable options. You want a list of non-respectable options? Instead, I would recommend that the Islay single malts are mostly all decent. The least expensive from the distillers are some of the new no-age Bowmores and Laphroaigs, but again you get what you pay for. ~$50 will get you entry-level Laphroaig 10yr and Ardbeg 10yr, which are both very good. Others have recommended a few of the "mystery" single malts or blends, which are a little cheaper but also younger.

All of this is just my opinion. I would also agree with most the other bottle recommendations here, but I chose my favorites to recommend. Ultimately you'll just have to try a few and see where it takes you and come back for more advice if you need it.

I would recommend that you don't necessarily have to rush through many options at once. Instead, focus on your Glenfiddich bottle and getting as much out of it as you can. Get a better glass and keep drinking Glenfiddich over a period of time, because as your palate develops you'll discover new aspects of it. You may have to buy another bottle of it if you're drinking that fast. Then eventually take the plunge and try something else. Rinse, repeat.

So I was poking around on amazon, and just so happened to come across these. I thought of you! :)

Hehehe, it's so weird to make the name transition from boyfriend to fiancé to husband! Just when you get used to fiancé, you'll have to change your terms again :D And fall weddings are gorgeous! We got married last September and lucked out with perfect weather - I bet you're right that it would be a good time of year for the midwest. I also love the idea of having 2 parties/receptions - I have a few friends that have done it, and it's an awesome way to celebrate some more and include everyone.

u/EmeryXCI · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

1.21 Gigawatts! $50 is incredibly generous! I would much rather have something small like this or this so that you can gift more than one person, but if I win and you choose to only gift me I would also enjoy a nice big gift card to go towards a camera.

I don't think I have any plans for this weekend, which is actually kind of a relief. The last few weeks have been CRAZY busy. So it will be nice to just be lazy for a bit. Sort of, anyways. I work on Sundays. My weekend is actually Wednesday/Thursday. I think maybe SO and I will go out tomorrow night. We'll see!

Thanks for the contest!

u/MaybeMaybeNotMike · 2 pointsr/cocktails

I agree with the premise here, but disagree with parts of the solution. In terms of quality, a martini is really only good when it’s very cold. So by doubling the volume (unless you drink really fast), you’re significantly increasing the chances of winding up with some martini that’s much warmer than is probably pleasant. I would just invest in some smaller glasses. Look for a coupe, or Nick & Nora glass anywhere from 4.5 to 5.5 oz. and you’ll be good to go. If you prefer the straight sided ones for vodka, go for it.
I agree about the picks, though. I have stainless steel ones with skulls on the end that look great on a negroni, black Manhattan, or anything with some dramatic color to it.

Check out these coupes

And/or these Nick & Noras

u/goodtim42 · 4 pointsr/cocktails

To get started in glassware, I would keep it simple. I find that most drinks can be successfully executed with two types of glassware: a 5oz coupe/cocktail glass and an old fashioned/rocks glass. I consider a Collins glass to be optional, as I personally don't like drinking out of them (they're typically served with a straw which is wasteful). I'll often use an 11oz double old-fashioned glass in its place.

In terms of brands I own several sets of the Luminarc Barcraft series coupes (available on Amazon). I like them because they're a fair price, which is great because I don't have to feel bad if one breaks. I also have the highballs which are also pretty decent.

If you're looking for higher end, I really like the New York Bar series from Stolzle. You can checkout the whole line here.

I personally use a Top Shelf shaker which I really like. Feels much nicer then some of the cheaper ones. The strainer I have is from Modern Mixologist. After having so many of the cheaper ones break, I decided to get one that I hopefully wouldn't have to replace. So far its been great and I enjoy using it.

The other tools I would consider getting is a meddler, a fine mesh strainer, a mixing glass, and a bar spoon!

See, I feel the same way except I prefer Bordeaux over Burgundy.

Spiegelau Vino Vino Bordeaux Glass

This will obviously come to to preference but I think Bordeaux is the most versatile and ubiquitous glass style around. Most people will be comfortable and familiar with it; it also shows most varietals (white and red) pretty well with the possible exception of heavily oaked chardonnay. The shape of the bowl is a little tighter and directs the aroma a little more intensely in my opinion.

I vote for Spiegelau over Riedel because they use slightly thicker, sturdier glass while still being thin and elegant enough at the right price. Spiegelau is actually owned by Riedel anyways.

u/bentreflection · 1 pointr/santashelpers

I too am a scotch drinker. Here are some of my favorite books on the subject:
Guide to Urban Moonshining

How to make whiskey

The Complete guide to single malt scotch

Some of them are about making whiskey but they go into details on the history and background of different whiskeys which i found very interesting. My favorite of the 3 is the urban moonshining one.

I haven't used one before but you could also get him a nice water dropper for whiskey and/or a glencairn glass.

u/PhukMe · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

It would cool to get a crazy looking glass, but if you want to appreciate the whiskey like an aficionado, go with a set of Glencairn tulip shaped whiskey glasses, found here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003QX2JMA/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1451185016&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=glencairn+whisky+glass&dpPl=1&dpID=41WvftP2%2BmL&ref=plSrch
They are the perfect shape to capture the aromas of the whiskey, examine the "legs", and allow the whiskey to hit your tongue correctly.

  1. Bluetooth speaker because after borrowing one from a friend i realized how super handy these things can be!

  2. Portable charger for your phone so you won't be worried about your battery dying

  3. Record player because records are cool and the only reason i haven't started a collection is because i don't have a record player

  4. Star Wars coasters because I'm sure no one else will have these and they're super cool
u/TheTsel · 15 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I summon /u/gimmeamargarita because she's beautiful and always manages to cheer me up even when I'm in the worst of moods. I have a feeling she would really enjoy this 7 piece margarita glassware set. I just have a hunch she would like those. ;)

Kindness is key.

u/Ctrl-Z · 1 pointr/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

It really depends on the beer. For the really hopsy bitter type beers, I find that funnelling it through the neck of the bottle stirs up the carbonation a bit more to make it even more bitter (I really like bitter). Part of the enjoyment to me is that 'snap' you get from a good hard swig from the bottle.

But there are definitely some beers that are just better out of a glass, like most Sam Adams. I do have a set of those really nice Sam Adams Perfect Pint glasses that do amazingly with hops-heavy ales and lagers. Personally I find putting sharp bitter beer in a glass actually dulls it to some extent.

u/golfzerodelta · 2 pointsr/wine

They do a very nice modern design. I also have their whiskey glasses and IMO they are very elegant. Simple, modern design with a nice weight in the hand. Similar case as the wine glasses.

u/ImTheDoctah · 2 pointsr/Tiki

I love these! 8.5 oz is perfect for syrups IMO, unless you use a lot. I tend to have a lot of syrups on hand so I don't go through them all that quickly.

u/pkbowen · 3 pointsr/wine

Since wine glasses have been mentioned, I'd like to plug Spiegelau glassware. The "Vino Vino" or "Vino Grande" Bordeaux stems are both good, and they can be had for a very good price on Amazon. If she gets into light-bodied reds, you may want to consider also picking up Burgundy stems. Cheers!

Does he eat cake or other sweets with whisky? If not, he may just be confused, and buying a bottle of whisky would be a safer route.

If he doesn't have a set of Glencairn Glasses that might be a nice gift as well.

I do prefer my glencairns, but I was gifted a set or Cortado glasses for Christmas (I believe based on a recommendation from here). These are great for higher proof juice, as they prevent the blast of alcohol on the nose that is common with stronger drinks.

I do not want a boat like this... I want a damn yacht, okay?!

I really want this margarita glasses & pitcher set... like bad. You see today in my contest, I decided I am going to host a RAOA margarita party here sometime in the future. I fear it may require many more margarita glasses than the 6 it will come with but alas, I can figure out how to be well ready in advance.

Drinks for all, loves!!

u/Dustin_Breadcrumbs · 4 pointsr/Scotch

How does he drink his scotch?

If with ice, go with a rocks glass and throw in a round ice maker.

If he drinks it neat or with a little water, go with the Glencarin glasses everyone is recommending. They are my go to. Another solid choice in this vein would be a copita nosing glass. They're basically a Glencairn on a stick.

Whatever you choose, Amazon or Waterford, a nice touch would be getting the glassware engraved.

u/66o4dP73pb7 · 2 pointsr/exmormon

Hey. Bulleit is a good sipping bourbon that deserves to be savored. Try a larger glass so that you can get your nose into it. A 'rocks' glass will work, but I like my fancy Glencairn glass for the good stuff.

u/AWildMattAppeared · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I use glencairn glasses like this: https://www.amazon.com/Glencairn-Crystal-Whiskey-Glass-Set/dp/B00H143UXW

I am thinking maybe that glass is intensifying the smell which normally I enjoy, so maybe I should just drink it out of a rocks glass neat, and won't get the smell as much, does that make sense?

u/mikerooooose · 1 pointr/cider

I use them to test carbonation levels before actually bottling into champagne bottles. I found this Italian company to be much better quality (glass and seal) than EZ cap and the others.

u/Gelectrode_ · 1 pointr/whiskey

OP's glasses are not too bad looking for whiskeys tbh. It will work nicely with a really high proof dram. Why not pick up a set of 2 or 4 glencairn's to go with current glass set as a just in case. You can get similar looking glencairns as well but they cost a lot more. OR not worry about it, i like having different glasses in my collection so maybe this person will too.

u/aoeudhtns · 1 pointr/espresso

I also found these but I'd personally go for the Duralex 3.13 or 4.63 oz. There's also the Provence style, to compare with the Picardie. Also tempered.

I've had espresso drinks from coffee shops in these kinds of glasses, without the double wall, and I've not had problems. I'm pretty sensitive to touching hot things, moreso than other people I know, so I wouldn't worry. Especially at $15-17 for 6 cups, you will probably find other uses for them and it won't be wasted money.

u/mattsb42 · 4 pointsr/WhiskeyTribe

Fun fact (for those in the US and buying on Amazon at least): while buying 2 puts them at ~$7-8 each[1], the sweet spot is usually in 6 or 12 packs at ~$5 each[2].

I used armour etch to personalize each Glencairn Whisky Glass. I then found a suitable box, cut out some foam, covered it in fabric, and topped it with a vinyl decal. It went over great at our last meeting.

Here's the official Riedel Glass.

Glencarins are also popular.

Relatively cheap on Amazon, though you need to buy it as an Add-On I guess?

Edit: looks like it's not available fulfilled by Amazon at the moment.

I don't understand the purpose considering most people who tend to really care about scotch use a Glencairn style glass which would never allow for a giant ice ball. Most scotch drinkers I have met simply add a small drop of water to open up their scotch or drink it straight. If you're buying expensive scotch, the likelihood of adding water or ice at all becomes increasingly unlikely.

Glencairn they are preferred by whiskey and also translates good with tequila for picking up notes in the nose.

$18.29 for a set of four 5.5 oz. Luminarc coupes on Amazon (Prime eligible): http://www.amazon.com/Luminarc-Barcraft-Coupe-Cocktail-Clear/dp/B00MW3YKCM

They have plenty more fancy ones (Riedel and Zweissel have gotten the memo that these are popular) available Prime as well, if you're looking for something more upscale.

I'm a last minute shopper on this one, but absolutely turning to Amazon next time.

$25 for 4 here: http://www.amazon.com/Glencairn-Whisky-Glass-Set-4/dp/B003QX2JMA

It's expensive and not a single malt (which is okay but not okay at that price).

I'd much rather go with something like Highland Park 12 which is ~$35-$40ish. If I'm going to spend $60+ I'd rather get an Islay personally (have a personal weakness for Ardbeg Uigeadail). But, JW Blue is basically all flash.

Though, I don't drink scotch to get drunk, so I consume not a lot in one sitting (usually use a Glencairn glass +/- drop of water.

There are a lot more knowledgeable folks over at /r/scotch

Rocks actually did originally refer to actual stones, and a contemporary version can still be bought: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008ZT2WW2?pc_redir=1398091608&robot_redir=1

These cool without watering down your drink.

I think it's worth having 2 styles of glass around for whiskey, a nosing glass and a tumbler sort of affair. I find that cask proof things in a glencairn just lead to getting a nose full of alcohol.

For the nosing glass Stemmed Glencairn > Brandy Balloon > Glencairn

For the Tumbler: Tumbler > Single Rocks Glass > Double Old Fashioned Glass > shot glass

Oh i just got some cheap stuff on amazon, nothing special (coupe glass)

I kinda liked these ones, but until i actually have space (and my own bar in house), I have to wait

u/QWOP_Expert · 1 pointr/whiskey

I took some pictures of a couple of Glencairns I have around, one is a known genuine glass purchased in person from the Glen Garioch Distillery, the other is from a 4-pack on Amazon (note it was priced at ~$24 when I bought it). To me, they look and feel exactly the same. The etching is also the same as far as I can tell. The packaging for the Glen Garioch glasses is obviously different from a standard Glencairn, but the Amazon glasses came in a plain cardboard box with 4 individually boxed glasses in it.

Album with a few comparison pictures.

Neat. Sometimes I'll drop some whiskey rocks in. The cooling from the rocks completely removes any burn from the alcohol without watering down the whiskey.

u/thoeoe · 4 pointsr/cocktails

I have these and they have served me very well. Not as fancy as cocktail kingdom but very affordable and sturdy.

u/nirreskeya · 2 pointsr/cocktails

I'm guessing this is the occasion so one might also want to stock up on these.

These days you can literally have drinks "on the rocks."

I have these. I'm not sure about the decorative one's OP has, but the ones I bought are very thin and light weight compared to glass versions I've tried.

u/ITrageGuy · 1 pointr/bourbon

I actually don't really like bourbon out of a Glencairn. For scotch it's the only way to go, but I drink my bourbons out of a tumbler similar to this

u/tylerlawhon · 1 pointr/randomactsofamazon

The absolute weirdest thing on my list is these glasses...

u/datewithikeaa · 2 pointsr/cocktails

Thanks! They are cheapies. I would personally prefer a smaller stem but finding smaller than 6 oz is difficult. If you are shopping try looking for the Leopold Coupe from Cocktail Kingdom. I think they are a little more high end looking while not being very expensive.

u/Razzafrachen · 2 pointsr/whiskey

Does it need to be etched cut crystal? Glencairns are one of the standard whiskey glasses. They're very narrow and are made to enhance the nose. I believe I've seen etched cut crystal glencairns before.
