glasses
TL;DR - Standard answer, the Glencairn glass (the official {Scotch} Whisk(e)y glass). My current favorite though is the Taylor'd Milestones Reserve Whiskey and Scotch Glasses available HERE
I'm by no means an expert, but I have tried many different shapes of glassware over the years... So, here are some of my experiences.
The standard highball/lowball, with their straight 🥃 (or even at times obtuse _/ ) sides, allows for too much area for many of the aromatics in the whisky to disperse and even escape, making the whisky very bland and uninteresting, thereby "weakening" or "taming" it a bit. Hence, this is where most people start.
Something with a bit of a bowl or tulip (_) to it is kind of the next step up. This helps to concentrate the aromas and can help to bring out some of the subtleties of a good whisky.
Then there is the Glencairn style glasses, which kind of combine the previous two. It is a slightly bowled base with the straightened tip of a lowball. This is the official Scotch Whisky glass, and does a really great job at really getting you intimately close with your whisky, bringing out even the slightest nuances. However, to me, this can be a bit much for whisky that is a little heavy on the nose.
So, the 3 different glasses that I have tried that use a very similar shape to the Glencairn, but widen the rim up a bit, thereby taming the nose ever so slightly, are the Canadian Glencairn, the Norlan, and the Taylor'd Milestones Reserve Whiskey and Scotch Glasses.
The Canadian Glencairn is a great glass but there are two things that bug me a bit about it. First off, it is slightly awkward to drink out of, as you nearly have to put the glass vertical before anything comes out. The second, much more minor issue, is that your hand is right on your whisky only separated by a very thin layer of glass, which will lead to warming up your whisky. Which you may or may not enjoy.
Then came the Norlan glass. It is essentially a Glencairn glass with some aerators in the bowl housed in a double walled tulip shaped glass, that way your hand will not warm up your whisky with a lingering enjoyment of a good dram. However, again, to me, it is just slightly awkward to sip from.
Enter the Taylor'd Milestones Reserve Whiskey and Scotch Glasses. And mentioned above, this is currently my favorite glass to enjoy a nice dram in. It is essentially a Glencairn this has an opening that is about 1.5 times the diameter (which can tame a slightly heavy nosing whisky just the right amount), and then a nice lowball type weight at the bottom of it. So, it feels great in the hand, and you don't have to have your hand right on the whisky if you don't want to. It also feels much more natural to sip from.
The link to the Taylor'd Milestones Reserve Whiskey and Scotch Glasses is at the top, but here are some links to some legit Glencairns.
The original Glencairn - 2 pack, 4 pack, or 6 pack
I would recommend that you use either the seller Stock Your Home or Our Pampered Home, as they both sell the official legitimate Glencairn glassware, and tend to be one of the lowest priced ones as well. There are a substantial amount of fakes out there! So, here are the same links, but for Stock Your Home (if available).
Original - 2 pack, 4 pack, or 6 pack
And then for Our Pampered Home (if available).
Original - 2 pack, 4 pack, or 6 pack
(Sorry for the delayed post, I've had a busy past couple of days)
All the best... Enjoy!
Those are actually made by Glencairn as well.
> These glasses were specifically designed for Canadian whisky, but work great for any malt! The wide bowl allows for the fullest appreciation of color and the solid base is designed to be easy on the hand. These glasses are larger than the original Glencairn and have plenty enough room to add ice or whisky stones if you desire.

I like them...basically for exactly what it says on the tin: rocks and some cocktails. Or just for really strong ginger ale. :)
If it was a glass for me, I'd probably get a pair of the Glencairn mixer glasses (not the snifters) that are recommended above, but unless your girlfriend is a real whiskey snob she may not recognize that you've gotten her an "official" tasting glass.
If you are looking for something unique or something that she can enjoy both looking at and using, I'd recommend either of these. They catch the eye from across the room and are sure to be a welcome replacement to her plastic cup:

I also personally like the Iceberg glasses that are on Amazon, but that's sort of an acquired taste, I like that the top is square and the bottom is complex, but you'd have to know that it matches her style.
Good luck!
To get started in glassware, I would keep it simple. I find that most drinks can be successfully executed with two types of glassware: a 5oz coupe/cocktail glass and an old fashioned/rocks glass. I consider a Collins glass to be optional, as I personally don't like drinking out of them (they're typically served with a straw which is wasteful). I'll often use an 11oz double old-fashioned glass in its place.
In terms of brands I own several sets of the Luminarc Barcraft series coupes (available on Amazon). I like them because they're a fair price, which is great because I don't have to feel bad if one breaks. I also have the highballs which are also pretty decent.
If you're looking for higher end, I really like the New York Bar series from Stolzle. You can checkout the whole line here.
I personally use a Top Shelf shaker which I really like. Feels much nicer then some of the cheaper ones. The strainer I have is from Modern Mixologist. After having so many of the cheaper ones break, I decided to get one that I hopefully wouldn't have to replace. So far its been great and I enjoy using it.
The other tools I would consider getting is a meddler, a fine mesh strainer, a mixing glass, and a bar spoon!

On the off chance that you plan on using said gift box in the wilderness, enjoy these. If you feel like making some shot glasses yourself (no stones I guess then?) here is a suggestion for ya! Also, not glasses, but thought you might enjoy this too.
Lastly, I thought these were pretty cool, too. I'd imagine lots of fun to look at, and through, with a bit of whiskey in your system. Enjoy your drink!

Coffee gear is always a great option. Depending on what he currently has, you could get him a kettle, scale, pour over/etc.
If he is already good on gear and you want to get him something to try out different options, a cupping set could be a good idea. Get him the spoons and cups along with a few interesting coffees from specialty roasters. Not overly expensive either.

You can find tons of interesting coffees all over the internet or check out a local roaster in your town.
Edit: a good grinder also makes a great gift option (and the Virtuoso+ was just released)
Whiskey drinker male here for far too long - so here are my two cents.
Hope this helps!
Fair enough haha. A lot of the similar quality stuff is closer to $40 imo as well
It's a Norlan glass; I got it on Amazon and while they are a bit pricey I like them a lot. It works well as a rocks glass or a neat glass and the double paned glass insulates the whisky from your hand really well.
Definitely pick up some Glencairn glasses. The glass really helps you get the nose just right, plus it looks dope.
In terms of a best bourbon under $100, there's a lot of choices, but I think a lot of people around here will recommend Four Roses Single Barrel and/or Elijah Craig Barrel Proof (if you can find it) as fantastic bourbons that won't kill your wallet.
He definitely enjoys a glass of whiskey on the rocks but he is starting to get more into the aromas and flavors so I think I might get one or two of those and then also one or two rocks glasses.
I have found quite a few rocks glasses on amazon but I'm not sure how to tell which ones are good quality (not cheaply made). Any recommendations? I want to make sure I get him quality glasses.
Are these good quality?
https://www.amazon.com/Taylord-Milestones-Glassware-Fashioned-Cocktails/dp/B00TFX2QFA/ref=sr_1_5?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1510712473&sr=1-5&keywords=rocks+whiskey+glass
I always think the ice spheres are awesome or the wedge. Paired with a couple highball tumblers.
Or just something funny. Lastly, just spend your money on a half way decent whiskey. If you have a good liquor store, get a middle shelf beauty, they should be able to help you.
I have glencairn glasses, but I prefer my whiskey neat, in an old fashioned style whiskey glass. It feel more classic and less pretentious. Search amazon for schott zwiesel old fashioned whiskey glasses. As far as the whiskey, I recommend trying some of the Kentucky made single barrel whiskey.. Like Evan Williams 9yr ($28) or Woodford reserve Mmm!
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002ACOQ10/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1451829680&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=schott+zwiesel&dpPl=1&dpID=41Bh28SiIeL&ref=plSrch
I have a few dram glasses, glencairns, and Canadian whisky glasses (came with the Jack Single Barrel Christmas set last year) that I prefer. Feel sturdy enough to me. I also brought back a Yamazaki rocks glass and a tasting glass from the distillery. I have enough options at reasonable price points for nosing, cocktails, rocks, or neat that I don't feel the need to pay a bundle for these pretty glasses that might break if I look askance at them.
I've seen these Brumate BN8G Nos'R glasses a few times that are pretty (except that they're opaque) and nigh indestructible for $24.95 each on Amazon.
Yeah, those are great for tasting whisk(e)y - this style can also be good and is a bit bigger if one should ever like to make a cocktail or use ice: "Canadian Glencairn". http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005LSA4GQ?pc_redir=1414501324&robot_redir=1
Tasting - as in really thinking about the smells flavors writing down notes - ice will only dull your tongue and not help, and the regular Glencairns might be too small to fit ice cubes. If you ever like to make cocktails (more common with bourbon/rye than scotch for sure) like Manhattans, old Fashioneds, or just have some booze over a few ice cubes, the Canadian may be a bit better and they are still very nice for "tasting" neat. Just my 2 cents - I have both styles and even just bought a "NEAT" glass but haven't tried it yet. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00IK4I9RE/ref=mlt_B005LSA4GQ_B00IK4I9RE
Does he have nice whisky drinking glasses? A glencairn is a must for any whisky lover, and the canadian glencairn is a very comfortable glass to drink out of.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018614WZS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_wZ2wCbAS8P9ND
This one is my jam. Its smaller than it looks and fits in my cupped hand. Also i have yet to see any other cup like it. My fav glass to serve it neat.
Ok so I could settle on just one because I found a few that I liked so my top 2 are a little less conventional here and here. The secod ones ARE out of stock right now but I like them.
The more "normal" or "classy" glasses I liked were here, here and here. And if your a Star Wars fan these.
Oh and 10 Practical Speed Skating Secrets From Julia Roberts.
Thanks!
Gotcha. So I'd probably do a theme. What I'd do for a beginner's introduction:
Glemorangie 10/Original or Dalwhinnie 15
Glenfiddich 12 or 15
Arran 10
Sprinbank 10
Laphroiag 10 or Talisker 10
Those are all single malts and will be easy enough for beginners to tackle. That's also the order I would taste them in. I wouldn't do more than 5 whiskys for "Tasting" as your palate really starts to break down.
I also recommend getting some tasting/nosing glasses. Here's a set of 6 for ~30$. Not a bad price. There used to be some cheaper ones called bellemain but I can't find them.
The glass will help you get a better handle on the nosing of the whisky.
I got these http://www.amazon.com/Glencairn-Crystal-Whiskey-Tasting-Glass/dp/B005LR3P1I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1419988901&sr=8-1&keywords=glencairn
but you can get a 6 pack of the same for $37, I would do that if I were to do it again. Or get a couple of the Canadian Glencairins as well to see which you like better.
http://www.amazon.com/Glencairn-Crystal-Canadian-Whisky-Glass/dp/B005LSA4GQ/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1419988901&sr=8-8&keywords=glencairn

Glencairn for new stuff, or if I really like the nose on a particular bourbon otherwise I use a plain old fashioned glass. If I'm enjoying a barrel strength over some ice, I use these glasses with giant ice cubes made in these trays .
edit: spelling corrections
I bought these double walled rocks glasses from Amazon and I love them for a few reasons:
Those are a very good price, and they look pretty good...my only concern is that the base seems both a little lighter and a little narrower than the pricier Glencairns. But they have great reviews, so I'd probably go for it if I needed any!
I also like whisky tots (sometimes called whisky bowl glasses or Canadian whisky glasses), like these, but it's harder to find bargains on these (which is why I didn't even mention them at first): http://www.amazon.com/Glencairn-Crystal-Canadian-Whisky-Glass/dp/B005LSA4GQ
No problem at all. Get him some [Glencairn glasses] (http://www.amazon.com/Glencairn-Whisky-Glass-Set-Gift/dp/B00L9LX3K8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1456937611&sr=8-4&keywords=glencairn), IMHO totally the best glass to drink/taste whisky (or indeed, pretty much any spirit) from. If you really want to splurge, they are available in [cut crystal] (http://www.amazon.com/Glencairn-Crystal-Whisky-Tasting-Glass/dp/B016YHJOBI/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1456937358&sr=8-6&keywords=glencairn+cut+crystal) as well, but the regular ones are more than fine - I actually prefer them, the lip is thinner. You can also get them custom engraved from numerous sources online.
Just make sure to get the official/real ones - lots of copies out there, most of which aren't as nice. There is also a larger "Canadian glencairn," which is appropriate if he prefers to use any ice.
That's what I've been using lately and I love it (these ones).
And to the OP: I recently ordered a bourbon neat at a bar and it ended up being served chilled in a martini glass ಠ_ಠ. Whatever you do, do not do that.
These look really cool -and- have doohickeys to keep moisture off of the table.
This is colorful and amazing!
Wicker glasses - that is all.

Happy cake day! Thanks for the contest

Its technically a canadian whiskey glass, but its an awesome glass for some high gravity beers and is actually what the Bruery's black tuesday glasses are.
enjoy!
You could also consider getting him some of these for the gift if he doesn't already have any:

This may be the cockford ollie your pallet will agree with, and the square is nice to hold in the hand vs a round stem.
Also, these aren't bad. A bit gimmicky with the literature, but they do stay cool. Only downside being the incredibly thin glass. These should be babied.
Nice! Being a blissfully ignorant American, I don't know the conversion rate, but this is very expensive! Looks like I'll be sticking with my second-hand Jack Daniels glasses for my single-malt.
Room temp is good for whiskey. Don't worry about special ice or water. Maybe also have a small bottle of water on hand in case she wants to add a splash.
If you're not sure if she likes ice or not then I'd go with Canadian Glencairn Glasses. They've got the tulip shape which helps enhance the nose but they're wide enough to accommodate ice unlike other tulip-shaped glasses.
Looks like the Godinger Dublin DOF glasses. Source: I have them.
Edit: They're very popular in movies/TV shows. I've seen this glass in House of Cards and Parks & Rec, among others.
Stupid Amazon. I really want these glasses but I don't need them. I have no where to put them. I have way too many glasses already. I will just admire them on the webpage. lol.
I even find Glencairns opening is too small. I really love the Canadian Whiskey glasses made by the same company as Glencairns....
At least have the decency to present some fake crystal tumblers with it.
And for a first timer, a very smooth whiskey is recommended as well. Drinking engine coolant makes you feel tough, but doesn't really make you want more ;)
Glencairns for sure. They were designed specifically to bring out the aromas of scotch and whiskey, the entire reason they exist is to improve the tasting experience. You can get a four pack on Amazon for $35
That’s because it is awesome: https://www.amazon.com/Corkcicle-Whiskey-Wedge-Fashioned-Silicone/dp/B00MYSQ9GA/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=half+ice+whiskey+glass&qid=1558796204&s=gateway&sprefix=half+ice+whiskey+&sr=8-3
As a few others have mentioned - as you become more exposed to peat the less shocking, if you will, to your taste it will be. However, the more complexities you may find being able to taste between the peat.
As to the glassware, if you're just drinking out of tumblers, I'd highly recommend getting some tasting glasses. There's the classic Glencairn, the Canadian Glencairn, a copita or anything similar. A glass like these will allow the whisky to concentrate and focus the smell which will allow you to find the more underlying character of the various whiskies.
I like the Canadian whiskey Glencairns too. I use them for bourbon mostly, but they are significantly more stable.
any chance you can make these on a larger whiskey glass?
Like this one
Meh it's a nice glass and I couldn't speak to it functionality but way over priced. I'm a fan of the Glen cairn glass and you can get a 6 pack of them for under $30, compared to nearly $100 for 2 of these. Here is a link and these are specifically made for noseing whisky
People seem to like these as well, I see them mentioned on other forums: Libbey Craft Spirits Whiskey Glasses, Set of 4 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PKLVWH4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_f0qwCbKBH87A9
If you enjoy your whiskey/scotch/rye ice-cold, you may want to check out this type of glasses in addition to the whiskey stones. I got a set of the glasses for my brother, and he says they work spectacularly at keeping his scotch cold.
Get the 6 set so you can drink with friends!

My wife bought these on Amazon about a year ago. I use them very regularly as they quickly became my favorite glasses.
They're dishwasher safe, no marks after many uses and washes, even with large square ice cubes. They have a really good feel to them, and a fairly nice weight to them, too.
I haven't tried any others, but if one of these got broken I would immediately buy the same one as a replacement.
Edit: I promise I'm not a glass salesman.
Schott Zwiesel has some really nice rocks glasses
Scotch glasses. :)
canadian glencairns are my daily driver. i don't think they break easily. i've broken more standard glencairns than any other glass i've owned yet haven't broken a canadian one yet. i think a lot of that is just luck though.
For anyone wondering what it's called, it's the Whiskey Wedge made by Corkcicle. My wife got me a set, and they work real well!

I got these off Amazon. I don't know how they compare to others price-wise but I haven't broken any in nearly a year, including taking a couple to the cabin
Just leave a browser window open to here. ;-)
My wife just got them off Amazon, I think Perhaps these were them?

It's just a double-walled whiskey glass. They are available wherever bar glass is sold and on Amazon.
Here Try these and tell me what you think, I've been looking into getting my Bar Tender license and these tumblers make me drool.
I have a set of these: http://smile.amazon.com/Libbey-56614-4-Piece-Perfect-9-8-Ounce/dp/B00PKLVWH4

I'm guessing you're referencing these: https://www.amazon.com/Libbey-56614-4-Piece-Perfect-9-8-Ounce/dp/B00PKLVWH4
They're about 30-40% larger than the average Glencairn or brandy snifter. Basically a nice set of rocks glasses...
If you're willing to drop good coin on good whiskey, you may as well drop less-than-a-bottle's worth on some glasses to drink it with. Literally pennies per glass over the lifetime of the glassware, even if you're prone to breaking it.
To answer your question: I did the same thing, bought a set of stemless wine glasses instead of the 5 oz measure that I had been using, because they were cheaper than Glencairns, but weren't a piece of cooking ware. Then my roommate encouraged me to "stop being a little bitch" and spend the money. Instantly noticed a difference. Could be psychological, but what else is drinking if not that?
Oh I see the photo now, I might have missed it the first time!
I will say, get yourself some Glencairns or Copita glasses. Totally worth it for tasting and nosing.
The shipping costs are worse than the glassware itself in many cases. I also used short heavy duty 250ml beakers as old-fashioned glasses for awhile. I just found these which look to be basically the same thing without the gradations.
[edit] Oops, those are double walled, not extra thick borosilicate. Still cool though.
Maybe these sphere ice cube moulds because apparently you should have those in your whiskey, and why not some fancy looking whiskey tumblers ?
Or skip the two step shit and just get one of these things.
