So I wasn't going to enter this contest until I saw this amazing origami book!

I thought it was a perfect way to craft items that are along the mythical/fantasy side since I see you enjoy that. (Dr. Who, Harry Potter, Buffy, GoT, etc.)

So I know you said $30 for mine, but I REALLY want this even though it's super cheap. I just can't seem to justify buying it for some reason even though I really want it.

Thanks for the contest!

Happy cakeday! Here is a lady licking a squirrel!

CAH with /u/huskyholms /u/writerlib and /u/digitalyss is awesome!

I'd love this to keep myself busy and for making gifts.

u/Grymalcyn · 2 pointsr/quilting

Not at all! I happen to have a light box from when I was in school, but you can just as easily accomplish the same thing by putting your original and tracing paper against a window.

Alternatively, you can purchase paper specifically for paper-piecing (essentially cut newsprint), and run copies off at your local copy shop.

u/dianeruth · 2 pointsr/bookporn

I like this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Making-Handmade-Books-Bindings-Structures/dp/1600595871/

It has a lot of good inspiration and directions. Other than that just read a bunch of stuff online. If you can't find the motivation I think there are a lot of community ed type things that will teach you.

u/jimschubert · 1 pointr/stencils

Stencil 101 and Stencil 201. They're pretty basic, and contain more craft stencil ideas than techniques. They're great for beginners, though, especially since they both have 20-25 pre-cut stencils to practice.

There's more info in the reddit sidebar, tbh.

u/Nocut12 · 2 pointsr/origami

Might be a bit late, but this book is a really great place to start.

u/Vandorbelt · 2 pointsr/Warthunder

Aye, that's the one! Thanks for finding that for me. Also, looks like this "Norman Schmidt" guy has a whole bunch of other sets as well from historic aircraft to birds.

This is specifically the kit that I got, which came with cardstock sets for every fighter as well as easily-scannable templates for reprinting.

And yeah, I wouldn't feel great about scanning the whole set up for people to use, especially since you can still buy them on Amazon, but I might scan up a couple just for people to try, and then leave a link to the Amazon page for the book.

This site has a few projects: http://rustic-crafts.com/?p=5180
Also, TLC's Mark Montano has a book you should check out, he makes some pretty fun projects: http://www.amazon.com/5368-Pulp-Fiction-Perfect-Projects/dp/157421697X

One book that I have found that is nice for beginners is Rick Beech's Practical Origami (my copy has a copyright of 2004, but apparently its actual publishing date is 2002). It is full colored, with actual photos of the folding process rather than drawings of the process, and it has a pretty big section on choosing materials, basic folds, and some of the common bases used in models. Amazon's default page for the book says that it is unavailable, but there is another listing that appears to be the same: http://www.amazon.com/Practical-origami-step---step-paperfolding/dp/1843093928/

Edit: I don't know how important it is to you, but there are apparently 83 models in this book.

u/LastNameSin · 2 pointsr/pics

Requires two dollars but it was extremely fun to fold. You have to fold 8 legs. One by one.

If you want to purchase a great book with similar diagrams you can find it in here:

Maybe Kell Black's Paper New York? I never tried it, but it looks fun to build.

u/armchairdictator · 438 pointsr/videos

Hey guys before you go to Devin's link and potentialy part with your money. Check out the originator of this concept's home page first: http://home.mims.meiji.ac.jp/~sugihara/ambiguousc/ambiguouscylindere.html

There are some free resources there as well as a link to the originators book from which Devon reverse engineered the Ambigous Cylinder from.

u/Arms_Akimbo · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

I love this collection of mechanical paper models by Paul Spooner: http://www.amazon.com/Spooners-Moving-Animals-Zoo-Tranquillity/dp/0810923319/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1345321057&sr=1-1&keywords=spooner%27s+moving+animals

You can learn a lot about paper model building by (trying) to put these together.

All you need is an xacto knice, replacement blades, and a ruler.

u/RosieRose23 · 3 pointsr/TwoXChromosomes

I'm older than you, so as a kid I really liked this book

The American Girl's Handy Book (1994)

Edit: I just found my copy, its mostly about arts and crafts and stuff. The newer one is probably more in line with what I would want for my daughter.

u/Darkrising123 · 2 pointsr/origami

This book includes quite a few variants of the sonobe unit if that help.

u/ananananaaaaa · 3 pointsr/origami

This is the book, but I don't have it yet, unfortunately. /u/opus25no5 mentioned on his/her thread that instructions for this model could be found online, and I did find a youtube video. Try it! :)

Needlework: knitting, crochet, embroidery, cross stitch, sewing, quilting. If you are really hardcore you can do tatting or learn how to make needle (not crochet) lace. I think needlework in general is very important culturally and skill-wise, and as human beings we shouldn't let those traditions die out.

Or you can indulge in some holiday baking. Or you could always try making candy.

My mom got me this book when I was a kid that sounds like something you'd be into: http://www.amazon.com/American-Girls-Handy-Book-Nonpareil/dp/0879236663/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top It's supposedly for younger girls but I don't think it would make a difference.

u/iamthad · 5 pointsr/tipofmytongue

Was it American Girls Handy Book, possibly with a different color on the cover?
