Just a note, be careful using carb cleaner, or straight 4-stroke gas (with no oil) for this. 2-stroke engines rely on oil mixed into the gas for lubrication. Carb cleaner has no oil, and can wash the oil off the cylinder walls, running the engine with no lubrication.

If you need to try something like this, it's better in some ways to use a small splash/spritz of oil-mixed, 2-stroke gas.

Yes, I'd interpret your test as showing that the engine is not properly getting fuel. You can clean and rebuild the carb. Or you can replace the carb.

Replacing the carb is simpler than disassembling and rebuilding it. It's also more likely to be successful. For ~$15, replacing the carb is probably worth a shot. One example:

Yes, ethanol-free gas should help avoid gumming up the carb. But you could still add stabilizer to the gas, as cheap insurance.

Yeah, string trimmer, weed eater, weed whacker, I've never learned the real name and there are so many different slang terms. I don't see anything that would require a hedge trimmer tbh.
Most of that is tall and grassy and a mower should have no issue if the blade is sharp, especially if it's just leveling things out and playing vacuum.

It looks to be about 2-3ft at the max in which I'd either go wild with my machete and have some fun or if I didn't feel up to a few hours of swinging and then sharpening my garden machete I would bring it to about shin level with a string trimmer and use a mower for cleanup.
Look around for a brush cutter head like the one I'll link to make things extra easy.

I actually use one of these on a lot of my personal smoke, but it abuses the bud during the trimming process, making it look less appetizing to California consumers.

I've seen some of the larger drums get good results. One of the more important part of the machines is that the cutting area is under vacuum pressure. Helps pull the leaves away from the bud for quicker, cleaner cuts so minimal rolling is needed.

Still best, but takes more time than drums is the vacuum line cutters Wander Trimmer. Attach to a new wet/dry vac and spins the blades, pulls the leaves away from the bud and sucks the trim into bags for you. But, it is still by hand, so takes more time but gives you the cleanest looking bud.

It's the same price or cheaper than a lot of plastic, and it's not hard to print with at all. Print directly on birch ply with no heat and it's fine. Heated garolite works amazing too. I print with both 645 and 618. Nylon can be extruded with any nozzle that'll do abs. I print at 243 degrees and it's great.

There's actually guy guy printing with this stuff: http://www.amazon.com/Maxpower-333665-Residential-065-Inch-1800-Foot/dp/B003VPAEL6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371438069&sr=8-1&keywords=maxpower%20trimmer&tag=vglnkc5387-20 and it's $21 for 3 pounds of the stuff (so much for saying it's more expensive). 1.75mm -- found from here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:104868

If you buy these and don't think this is the greatest lawn buy ever, PM me after 30 days and I'll paypal you $20. I back up my advice with cash because my advice is God tier.

If you really want you can use .065" trimmer line. Its super low quality, full of moisture, and only comes in blue (Color coded by diameter), so it bubbles a lot when printed. The appeal is $22 for 3 lbs. I haven't gotten around to oven baking it yet, and that might help.

It comes on the new trimmers and was on a few of the solid shaft trimmers from factory as well. Milwaukee Electric Tools 49-16-2714 Easy Load Trimmer Head https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078H9R1FL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_T6R1CbK1GSC97

Oregon 559046 Biodegradable Nylon Line https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00C2XJWMU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_t9lUDbQ89A7WX

I can't attest to how well it works, but there are some biodegradable lines out there.

I have mid range consumer equipment that is more than adequate with power and runtime, and very easy to switch batteries. I imagine the professional electric stuff is even better.

Managing a bunch of batteries is just more of a pain in the ass than grabbing a gas can, but I think the tech is fairly mature. Figuring out a way to manage the batteries for a maintenance team should be feasible.

> 5-6 years run and I loved it but a simple carburetor repair ran 80% of the cost of a new unit

I'll just throw out there for anyone reading this that you can usually replace a carb on small engines like this for less than $20 if you don't feel like cleaning it, or it's beyond cleaning.

The bastard that came up with this idea should be shot, but more tools is good, right?

u/War_Hymn · 1 pointr/NoStupidQuestions

$30 at Amazon, seems to have good reviews. One guy mention pieces of wire flying off, so eye protection is a must.

u/Square_Chisel · 1 pointr/Chainsaw

Tune the carb and it will run better. You will probably need the [splined carb adjustment tool] (https://www.amazon.com/Carburetor-Adjusting-Craftsman-Adjustment-530035560/dp/B00YZ4ZP84)

I got a Stihl powerhead and used a brush cutter attachment with Redmax cutting blades.

Whichever powerhead you get, I'd recommend getting one with what are called bicycle handlebar grips. You're much less likely to get carpal tunnel.

Get the biggest powerhead they have.

Redmax 9" cutting blade:

https://www.amazon.com/RedMax-Bruchcutter-Blade-24-Tooth-SST249/dp/B00RDH4SVA

Get 2 blades and make sure you have a sharpening file or a Dremel with a sharpening bit.

You can actually cut the stumps of the small trees with this down to the ground. Unlike a chainsaw, where you easily dull the chain and kick back is very dangerous.

I did this yard + lots more with it. https://imgur.com/a/0Fu0m

I also went through a bunch of loppers and settled on a particular model from Fiskars. They cut like BUTTER. They were so good, I got 4. Just in case.

These. NO OTHERS. ONLY THESE. https://www.homedepot.com/p/PowerGear2-32-in-Bypass-Lopper-394802-1001/205667346

Nothing else is as amazing as these.

u/hyperair · 1 pointr/3Dprinting

Maxpower 333665 works well on 1.75mm hotends. If you select another brand, be careful to get the ones that don't come with glass fibers in them.

u/kk_knee · 1 pointr/3Dprinting

Here's one for 10 bucks a pound. You'd need a special extruder tube though because it's 2.4 mm diameter.

Our lawn crews use the [echo speed feed](http://www.Echo.com/ 99944200908 Speed-Feed 400 Trimmer Head https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D0VZMD6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_SftCzbK4CQ08C) on all of our trimmers, holds 3 arm lengths and is loaded quickly, no need to be fumbling around with a bunch of small lengths. You can get a kit that has adapters that fit several trimmer types.

u/cycling_duder · 1 pointr/3Dprinting

Also 1.75mm is a common size for trimmer line Example

u/PurdueME06 · 2 pointsr/engineering

Weed eater blades should be light enough to be spun with a small motor.

u/paulburk426 · 1 pointr/lawncare

I get so pissed when I just started lawn work and I'm out of string... I switched to a replaceable head kit...

https://www.amazon.com/Grass-Gator-8030-Electric-Replacement/dp/B000RMQ8AW

But don't buy their stupid overpriced pieces, just buy a bulk roll and cut your own to length

u/ITworksGuys · 2 pointsr/landscaping

I just switched the head to a fixed head system.

I just buy some fat ass string and change it maybe once or twice per use.

Something like this

I've been trying to figure out how to make something like this (below) but I doubt I'll be able to.
