I've been going through the same thing recently, and have made some pretty radical changes. I have been following Weight Watchers (down 13 lbs in the past month). First I did it online, then I started going to a meeting. It's basically a simplified way to count calories. It's pretty easy, and the recipes are good and wholesome. And there are lots of quick products out there if you want a convenience food. I have also been going to the gym about 5 times a week. The thing that has really helped me stick to these thingss, is doing hypnosis. Sounds weird- but it's worked for me. Didn't work as well for my husband- he's not as easily hypnotized, but it turns out that I am. If it's something that you're interested in- I can tell you more. It's helped me cut out sweets, and get myself to the gym regularly- and really enjoying it. You listen to it at night or in the morning- or both.

I think it's good to make a bunch of changes, but don't do them all at once. Leave changes for when you plateau. Or make 1 major change a week.

-Don't let any junk food in your house. You might be able to avoid it most of the time, but not all the time.

-Don't eat out, unless it's a very special occasion. This means packing your lunch.

-Have healthy snacks ready for you so you're not tempted to get something from a coffee shop or vending machine. Leave things in your car, or your desk so you have no excuse to eat junk.

-stop eating at night. Set a time for yourself- like not eating after 9pm.

-if you can stand it, find a healthy breakfast meal and a healthy lunch meal, and eat the same thing each day. If you find that you're losing weight while eating a certain way- have fewer variables.

-Tell someone that you're doing this- maybe find someone else to do this with. It's very motivating to have someone to go through this with. And share tips and recipes.

-Make a big pot of soup every week. Something with broth, protein and veggies. Very filling and low in calories.

-Get a pedometer. This is a very good one. http://www.amazon.com/Omron-HJ-112-Digital-Pocket-Pedometer/dp/B0000U1OCI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1268589711&sr=1-1
Just slip it in your pocket and make it a competition with yourself. I'm a competitive person, so to put things in that perspective is really helpful for me.

Good luck! And let us know how it goes!

I think a Food processer is very important! You can use veggies in crazy ways if you can break them down. Even nuts can be used as a cookie base. It's a little more work but making homemade sauces can be so much healthy, especially if you can sneak in extra veggies!

Lets all sing Portion Control amen. And don't forget measuring cups and spoons, to control condiments, you could also just use the cups instead of the fancy portion measurer

I also recommend getting one of these under desk peddlers promise yourself you'll use it when watching T.V or doing reddit.

Pedometer a nifty affordable way to keep track of how much you are actually walking. I'm going to buy one just to make myself walk more!

Tape measure this is going to be surprisingly important. I've been trying to get back into shape since last September and I've only lost 15 pounds. I didn't keep track of my measurements, and I wish I had. My pants are almost falling off, but the proof of the numbers would be more of a morale booster. Easier to pass on the second helping of Chinease food if you KNOW you're making progress!

I wish you great luck! I think eating healthy is most important, but it feels so good, to just work the heck out,and be covered in sweat, and know you whooped that workouts ass! And another idea is to watch your department stores, I got my $200 stationary bike for $40 bucks, because it was a floor model, and was missing a little cover on one of the edges that touch the floor.

If I were in your position, I wouldn't push hard on running right now. I'd start with a serious walking program. It will be easier to stick to, you'll make progress fast, and, perhaps most important, it's going to be a lot easier on your knees.

I'd get a pedometer (specifically this one), start shooting for an average target of 10K steps a day and then kick the average up by 500 steps every week or so. You'll drop a bunch of weight and build some basic stamina - both of which will serve you well when you start running later on. Also, it'll help reassure you that you're moving in the right direction more than setting overly ambitious targets, failing, and having dark moments of the soul like yesterday's.

Lol. Good luck! You could also get a simple pedometer like this one if you're just wanting one to count your steps! :) Omron HJ-321 Tri-Axis Alvita Pedometer, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007ZWIJR2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_pTD1xb37FS1JQ

I hear you, DH thinks the Apple Watch is a no go, but I'm gonna keep trying haha 💜

Or you can save your money and buy this.

Also, get this. It takes a huge amount of guess work out of counting calories.

The MyFitnessPal food database can be helpful, but it can also be infuriating.

You don't need an account. You don't really need to go back three weeks and see that you ate half a serving of McDonald's french fries. All you need to do is make sure that you don't go over your limit on calories every day. There's no reason to overcomplicate it.

The simplest and most straight-forward way is with that pedometer, that scale, a piece of paper, a calculator, and a pen.

The scale comes with a booklet gives you "calorie factors", which are just constants by which you multiply the mass of the food, in grams, to get the number of calories. If you get into the habit of doing this, you'll actually start to have a feel for the calorie density of various foods. It'll help you estimate when you have to estimate. MyFitnessPal doesn't give you this.

The booklet also has a some blank lines in the back where you can keep foods you frequently eat along with their calorie factors. Eventually you'll just memorize everything to the point where you just throw somthing on the scale, multiply its mass times the number you've memorized, and bam: calories. No looking anything up or searching any database and trying to figure out whose calorie estimates are right.

Losing weight isn't easy, but it's really damn simple. Spending more money on expensive gadgets or looking for special applications, websites, or other gimmicks isn't going to make success any more likely.

Just buy those things I linked, find a nice park near your house, focus on your calorie balance, and that's it. Enjoy the journey.

I have this pedometer on my Fun Things wishlist. I want to keep track of my steps and maybe get up to 10,000 a day.

Thanks for the contest. :)

u/raubry · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

The pedometer is a great idea. I got one a couple of months ago - it truly helps. This one is sold on Amazon and 1600 people bought it and liked it enough to comment on it!

u/Batoriova · 2 pointsr/TwoXChromosomes

I used to have a pedometer with this string-and-pin attachment on it. If you pulled the little pin out, a very, very loud alarm would sound. I have since lost it, but that might be a good compliment to the mace as well since it would draw so much attention. This is similar to the one that I had: http://www.amazon.com/Brunton-PedAlarm-Digital-Pedometer-Alarm/dp/B000FKL7JI

u/tasharanee · 1 pointr/apple

I like apple stuff, but can't see myself buying the apple watch. Last month, I bought a Life Trak, but it was too big and bulky on my wrist, so I returned it. Basically, I just want the time, alarms, and activity tracking. A week ago, I received a Striiv. The form factor is fantastic. It's subtle and unobtrusive. Any other watch with similar dimensions is going to be a hit with me. Notifications are a big plus, too. I think the apple watch is going to be too big.

I've started walking and hiking again as a way to take off weight, and now I'm obsessed. I'm lucky to live in a part of the country that's in the Appalachian Mountains, so no matter where I walk, it's a nature walk. I started charting everywhere I go with a site that lets me draw on Google Maps, and I never take the same route twice.

I'd like a pedometer, so I can track my distance as well as my route.

u/BunsenBurnerButt · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

pedometers are fun to play around with and collect your own data

u/hazelowl · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

A weight-lifting book I've heard good things about. This one is specifically for women, but they also have a general one, and one for abs.

Biggest Loser Cookbook

A pedometer (and maybe a strap for it, since that one seems to be on sale too?)

A food scale! I love mine.

u/Kichigai · 1 pointr/Android

Why not just buy a pedometer? Less than $10 with free shipping, and you don't have to worry about battery life impact, or rebooting, or software hanging or whatever.

u/andysaurus_rex · 1 pointr/TalesFromYourServer

Oh they’re worn on your wrist like a watch.

Could be a fun bet. Loser gives winner X amount of massages.

This $2 pedometer leash has saved my $100 Fitbit more times than I can count.

i really like this food journal

of course you could go for this dvd/bluray

maybe a pedometer?

u/rheotron · 1 pointr/Fitness

Fitbit Ultra is probably your best bet. Not a full watch, but displays the time and tracks plenty of other things too http://www.amazon.com:83/Fitbit-Wireless-Activity-Sleep-Tracker/dp/B005PUONIK

u/Flying00Fiddle · 3 pointsr/fatlogic

I use a pedometer clipped to my waistband because it's much more discrete than a silicone wrist band. At 140 pounds, I estimate 100 calories per 3000 steps. Per 2000 steps if I'm running. I like Omron brand because it resets every day automatically.

The biggest drawback is that I put them through the laundry every so often and they rarely survive.

u/Yabberdabberdooo · 1 pointr/CasualUK

I remember mate it went on the laces and wrapped around. Yeah stepometer similar to this but obviously a lot more retro and basic

u/martinr22 · 1 pointr/loseit

I could not see the need to pay so much for a pedometer. I got all I need for $17, now it seems the price went up to $19 :( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007ZWIJR2/ref=ox_ya_os_product_refresh_T1

This shows me calories burned for the day and I just enter this into MFP as a walking activity. It has a 7 day history so I don't even need to do it every day. I feel this gives me just as much motivation to walk more as I would with a fitbit. Not that hard to copy one number a day from the device to MFP to justify paying $50-100 for bluetooth syncing. Plus I prefer to not have another website to need to log into.

I wish MFP had a way to manually enter pedometer data. It seems like they have a deal these companies to sell more fancy pedometers. No way for my to put in 10k steps manually. So I just enter it as walking 3.0mph, then enter a time that gets me close the calorie count indicated by the pedometer, tending a bit low in case the estimate is high.

u/Heavenlylove · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

http://amzn.com/B0006VWRX6 This counts how many steps you take each day.

No, it's not. It's an effective tool for tracking your activity. Here's the one I have.

I gifted each of my cousins who are preparing for board exams an alarm clock. The sound of the alarm can wake you up from death. My cousins are probably waking up everyday cursing the moment I decided to buy it.

Other gifts include t-shirts, books, Wall clocks, Timex wrist watches, pedometer and lot of toys for the kids.
