Hey friend! I'm a relatively new streamer too and I can tell you all the things that I have found that I wanted and reasoning behind them. Sorry for formatting, I'm on mobile.

First things first, I got a nice webcam like this. The better quality your camera, the more genuine your interactions with chat become. Plus, you can eventually add a green-screen later if thata something he's interested in.

On that topic, Elgato sells a green-screen that is super easy to set up and tear down that's a little pricey, but it can be worth it. I've seen people use this for all sorts of things. One guy I know, if he died in PUBG, he would switch scenes to one where his face is on a flip phone, and it would appear like his team that he was spectating was holding it, video chatting with him. Real cute haha.

If you're planning on getting him a headset, I ALWAYS suggest getting a USB headset, not one with an auxiliary plug. This reduces static noise and allows for surround sound transmission if the headset is surround-sound enabled.

Now, I'm not a big fan of the boom mic setup for a couple reasons, but here's a few reasons why I think people have bought them:

  1. They have a higher frequency response range, which means it will pick up higher and lower frequencies than your headset mic may. This makes the audio feel more powerful clearer.

  2. They make it easier to reduce background noise when gaming. If he has a mechanical keyboard that is very click, these mics are usually good at reducing the chance of picking that sound up.

Here's my reasoning why I don't like boom mics:

  3. I have to wear a headset anyway. My headset is a Logitech 633 (or 933 idk) Artemis and it has a mic built in already that's decent enough. I don't think the improvement from my headset mic to a boom mics would be worth the investment because the improvement would be relatively small.

  4. The boom and mic can reduce your freedom of movement. If you want to use the mic to reduce background noise and everything like that, you'll need to put it very close to the mouth and create a noise gate. If you do this, there's very little room for movement because you have a giant mic arm in front of you, but with a headset, it's more free.

I can't really say anything about the stream deck, but I've heard both good and bad things about it. I know a lot of big name streamers use it.

An interesting idea would be to give him codes to giveaway on stream. You can buy codes for online currency for Xbox, PS4, or individual games on Amazon, and then he can run giveaways and give them to his viewers.

Finally, there's some program Twitch made called Twitch Affiliate which allows people to start earning money through Twitch after accumulating a certain amount of viewers and followers. After meeting all the requirements to join this program, you get access to having you're own emotes (3 to start, more if you become a Twitch Partner which is way harder to do), accepting donations, subscriptions, and subscriber badges. If you think he has an idea of what he would want for emotes and sub badges, you can always find someone to make him some as a gift.

I'm so sorry that I just typed so much but if you have any questions feel free to let me know!

TL;DR: consider good webcam, green-screen, maybe stream deck, I have certain negative feelings against boom mics, you could buy codes for giveaways, and maybe even commission some emotes/sub badges for him

Hi all! My mother-in-law is a recreational photagrapher and LOVES to take pictures of friends and family. She told me a few months ago that she wants to receive a photo back drop as a gift. She does not have a stand or any other equipment. So I have 3 question:

  1. Is this a good stand set? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MTF6ZVC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_VRw.BbRVFBPBB

  2. Will I need other equipment to make this a successful gift (besides actual back drop)?

  3. What type of background would be desirable as far as print?

I picked out a few backdrops that I think she might like that I can afford and would love some feedback! One is a basic "school photo" backdrop, one looks like vertical, raw barn wood slats, and one looks like white horizontal boards with a floor at the bottom.

She prefers outdoor photagraphy and likes a more rustic feel when decorating her home. I would lovingly describe her as a 'glamping nascar princess.'

Thanks so much for reading and for your responses!

I worked for a guy that has done electronic design for decades and loved his system. He used boxes like these, but long and narrow, with dividers. He labeled each box A, B, etc. Each divider had a sub index.

He combined that system with a basic inventory software (he and his son wrote it, but I'm sure there are things available in OSS-land). He stored name, MFG #, vendor #, component type, value, quantity etc and made it all searchable. When he had a new part it could go (in it's original packaging) in any box with open space, you need only add it to the inventory system. Some extra IC-safe bags and sorts help with odd shaped packages -- like IC tubes.

I would build boards for him (design, manufacture on a CNC board miller) and it took about no time at all to find parts and build things. I love this system because it requires zero memory and is a direct lookup to where the part is in storage.

Thanks for the article, I actually have something like that, here's a couple shots I took with it 2. (The shots I liked earlier were with natural light from a window at around noon with the blinds closed).

The camera is an old Sony DSC P-100, 5.1 megapixel, probably about 14 years old. It has a flash and I think some limited manual settings? I'm really not very experienced with it.

I was thinking about getting something like this with a studio gray / thunder grey background. (And a white one too, just plain white seems to be the trendy thing lately in backgrounds), but it sounds like you're saying stick with the lightbox concept?

Any lights in particular you'd recommend? Cameras or other equipment? I'd say I have a budget of maybe $500.00 - $1,000.00 or so including camera, lights, maybe Adobe lightroom etc. I want to get serious about selling more of my work this year and I know good shots are a big part of that.

u/IronPatriot049 · 1 pointr/Etsy

They look good, but yeah, they seem a little dark.

Are you only using a single light source? It seems that way. Try getting a desk top lamp or 2 to surround it in more light. Use natural white light bulbs or LED lamps as well.

I bought one of these ages ago and still use it to this day. Love it.

https://www.amazon.com/Emart-Photography-Studio-Lighting-Shooting/dp/B01MZWSBOP/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1518196751&sr=8-9&keywords=small+home+photo+studio

They also make cheaper ones designed to be used with a smart phone if that's how you are taking your pictures.

u/darcybono · 1 pointr/Warhammer

I use this one here with just a sheet of white poster board for the backdrop:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00N9U3VOK/ref=ppx_yo_mob_b_inactive_ship_o0_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And I'm glad you asked because I forgot to mention that I use a selfie lamp with white backgrounds. It's a ring shaped light, that brightens the background but doesn't cause sharp shadows on the models. Here's the one I use:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B078KV9BZC/ref=ppx_yo_mob_b_track_package_o0_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

EDIT: Also I just saw your other comment, hope you feel better soon! :)

u/Skaare42 · 1 pointr/lego

Thank you! That's actually something I've been attempting to improve lately. Historically I was using my iPhone, because attempts to use a DSLR looked even worse (because I had no idea what I was doing). After becoming a wee bit more knowledgeable on a recent vacation in Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, I became determined to finally improve my indoor shots. I found some surprisingly reasonable equipment on Amazon for background and lighting (lighting x2, tabletop backdrop stand, background paper, clamps to hold the paper taut), leveraged tripods I already owned and used one of my Pentax DSLRs (A K20D in this case). I still auto-leveled all the images on my computer, but hopefully they are better than in the past.

u/Shankafoo · 1 pointr/Twitch

This is the one I picked up. - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003UOOTCS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Probably more than you need, but I've been thrilled with the value considering I use it for youtube videos, site commercials, and of course, now Twitch.

You could probably just get away with this - http://www.amazon.com/6x9-Chromakey-Backdrop-Background-Fancierstudio/dp/B001PCQTDO/ref=pd_cp_p_3

Make sure you have something to set it up with, either a wall, piece of foamboard, or get a frame like this - http://www.amazon.com/LimoStudio-Adjustable-Background-Backdrop-Support/dp/B00E6GRHBO/ref=pd_bxgy_p_text_y

If you get the frame, don't neglect the spring clamps - http://www.amazon.com/Cheaplights-PCS-3-75-Spring-Clamps/dp/B0019SHZU0/ref=pd_bxgy_p_text_z though I got mine (metal and more robust) from Home Depot.

1: personally, i use a Logitech C920. It's really nice, but also overkill since you don't need to put out 1080p video from your cam to have good quality. It's on sale currently on amazon though.

2: i just started using an Audio-technica AT2020 and so far I love it. They make a usb version of it as well.

3: My green screen cost me $18 bucks for a 6' x 10' screen. I would make sure that you get a green screen made from muslin fabric.

u/keetstreet · 1 pointr/dropship

Get better pictures of your items without the packaging in the back or the hand. The phone case should take up the majority of the screen, and you can get someone on Fiverr to remove the background for a few dollars. Because the camera is so zoomed out, to where it's including so much other crap in the shot, it's difficult to see the items well from the home page because the item is such a small part of the picture. You might be able to find professional pics on AliExpress or elsewhere on the internet. These pics look like they were taken with a camera phone by somebody just working out of their house, which may be true and there's nothing wrong with that, but you want your customers to think you're a big, established company, and a big company would have professional looking pictures with a plain white background.

You can buy an inexpensive photo light box to take pics of your items so they'll have nice lighting and a clean white background. (AliExpress has those even cheaper, if you don't mind waiting much longer to get it.)

u/missmarple78 · 11 pointsr/Genealogy

If they are all about document size or smaller, you can buy an archival document box on amazon like this : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003HAAJPQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They also come in other sizes. Just make sure it's archival. Then I would buy some buffered archival tissue and put a sheet in between each document in the box: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003DPVJ1I/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The photos may not need the buffered paper, but definitely for anything else. But I'd just use the buffered paper on photos too, it'd fine for them, just not necessary.

As for labeling, I'm always torn on how to do that too. I lean towards marking the item with something removable. I'd probably mark the back in pencil. That way it's on the object but is not permanent. If you want to permanently mark something, just a use pen with archival ink. They should be easy to find.

u/Corlevie · 2 pointsr/Etsy

I have both, as in the first link and more modern version with built in LED lights that not need to be changed every 6 months.

First version works well, but you have to replace 2400K halogen lamps with other free standing lamps with more suitable for photography color color temperature (5,500-6,500K), if CFL, they have to be changed every half of year or year.

With built-in LED, 6,500K lights are already included and no need to use additional space for free standing lamps. There are simpler plastic versions of it, like this. Many sellers offer it, at different prices.

Hello, relatively new Canadian here. I am planning on buying the Yonguo 560 IV! for about $100 in hopes of taking better portraits. What controller works best? the YN560 TX! for $60 seems to give me wireless controls but it requires batteries so I don't know how reliable that is, there is also just a simple trigger! for $40 dollars. Is there anything else I should be looking into when purchasing? Thank you.

u/tristanwww · 9 pointsr/minipainting

Really the only thing I would state in general is improving the quality of the pictures. It's difficult to judge mini's when the picture of them is too far away, or blurry due to lighting. I highly recommend looking at the sidebar's photo tutorial to improve reception of your miniatures. Myself, I am getting a small lightbox to aid in photography. Not to mention it makes your mini's look better if you have a professional (or at the very least) clean looking background.

Art boxes are usually around 3 or 4 inches. In my own experience, I haven't enjoyed things under the bed: either it just spread the clutter to under the bed, or if the things in it actually brought me joy, under the bed was the least convenient place for them. I use art boxes with holes cut on the back on top of dressers to hide networking equipment and personal electronics/chargers. As such, I matched the box to the dresser. Underneath, I might go with clear so it would be easier to tell what's in there with multiple boxes.

Green cloth from a crafts store can do the trick, though I just ordered a chroma key cloth off Amazon. It can be worth buying ones that'll better fit your setup, like this

But it's whatever fits your setup

u/Ellis_D-25 · 2 pointsr/minipainting

I'm using this Light Box. It's really decent value for the money and I'm glad it has a second LED strip since most similarly priced boxes only include 1.

As for camera, I'm just using my Samsung Galaxy S6's camera set to "pro" mode and I'm saving the images into a raw format. I'm still dialing in on the ideal exposure and shutter speed settings to get the contrast and colors to really pop.

u/org_bgo · 2 pointsr/Gunpla

Online, looks exactly like this but it's roughly $5 usd.

Google around it's pretty easy to find. Don't expect much though lol you can prob diy it if you got some materials lying around.

What about something like a floor to ceiling tension rod?

http://www.amazon.com/Manfrotto-170-Spring-Loaded-Ceiling/dp/B001M4HUGA

(I'm guessing you'd be able to find or jury rig something less expensive than that particular item.)

A floor to ceiling rod seems like it'd be an even more stable non-permanent solution than the tripod solutions people have been talking about, with the advantage of having a smaller, almost non-existent footprint.

edit: Here's a cheap floor to ceiling shower caddy pole that might do the trick:

Book - $11

Razor - $28

Brush - $7

Aftershave - $6

Soap - $7

Blades - $13 /100

Alum - $6

Box - $8

That is the setup OP has except a generally more popular aftershave scent, a different brush, and a block of alum that I find a little easier to use.

This is about $75 per person.

Edit: Personally I would probably go with /u/papander 's suggestion of Maggards. It is not what OP did, but Maggard's is a top notch retailer with really good product. For even less hassle just grab as many starter kits as you like, and add aftershave from walmart. You can't go wrong with any selection on the drop down lists as Maggards does not sell junk.

u/Daisy387 · 2 pointsr/ECEProfessionals

Heard good things about this one: Pix-Star 10.4 Inch Wi-Fi Cloud Digital Photo Frame FotoConnect XD with Email, Online Providers, iPhone & Android app, DLNA and Motion Sensor (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0056HNTAU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_RySRCbGNC9YZ3

You just use the app or email them to the frame.

u/blu3dice · 2 pointsr/poshmark

We kinda have the same wall color, lol.

I'm content right now with my photos but I'll probably in the future invest in a background kit. I've heard muslin fabric is the best because its wrinkle resistant.

This is the stand kit I'd probably purchase.

And muslin background fabric.

I have this one and it's nice because the 2 mini sub ends go to one regular sub port so you only need one charger.

I use a similar setup for most of my daughter's youtube videos that we shoot at home.

Shooting light through an umbrella will make it softer than reflecting it.

85 Watt 5500K (daylight) CFL Bulbs are energy efficient and don't get terribly hot.

So I picked up a Neewer lightbox with some random LED lights for prime day. For my camera, I'm using an Olympus OMD EM-10 with a 25mm lens. So far I'm liking the results :) Tomorrow I'll practice some more with other kits

I like that one for that reason.

> but it requires batteries so I don't know how reliable that is

Your flash and camera also require batteries. What's unreliable about that?

> there is also just a simple trigger!

That requires batteries too.

And you only need one transmitter/transceiver unit in that system for the camera. Your flash already has a built-in receiver compatible with that system.

u/tornado_bear · 3 pointsr/M43

I agree with /u/d1rtdevil that a new lens won't improve image quality if your lighting is poor. I've used the 12-60 f/3.5-5.6 to take product photos and thought IQ was great. I would recommend looking into a light tent and tripod.

u/Mr_Algorithm · 1 pointr/Flipping

I just purchased this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DOGIED2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

It is being delivered today. I will let you know if it is any good. I know I will need to replace the lights, but I thought it would be a good place to start.

If I didn't need a bigger box I would have bought the Foldio2. Lights are built in (which I really like) but 15" just wasn't big enough for me. (That's what she said hehe)

Looks good to me. I would add one more thing.

Some sand bags for the stand. Only $17.

It's a big umbrella, and although it most likely won't tip over. Better to be safe than sorry, especially if you are going to be shooting newborns, lol. Only takes someone accidentally bumping into it.

This little cheap light box is actually pretty decent, and perfectly sized for coins. I have a much larger light box as well, but for coins, this one gets 'er done.

u/FumbledAgain · 1 pointr/Vive

Have you considered a contractor pole? You can also use cheap sand bags. In terms of filler, you can get cheap playground sand for $5/bag, but I recommend spending just a few dollars more and get pebbles instead. Place whatever you decide to fill the sandbags with inside gallon size ziplog bags. These extra steps help to avoid getting sand and dust everywhere.

I know you don't want to use any floor space, but if just a little bit would be ok, you could use a "Floor-to-Ceiling" Pole (there are way cheaper ones) and add a clamp or another holder for the Lighthouses. At least they won't take as much space as a tripod.

This was the frame I just got her for Mother's Day. The person who makes it on Etsy made and shipped it pretty quickly!

The digital photo frame I got her was this one on Amazon, it's a bit pricy but I thought it was worth it since it's the only frame I could find that you could set up an email address and send pics directly to the frame. She is not the best with technology so it's nice that she doesn't have to load the pictures on by herself, everyone in the family has the email address and just sends photos directly to the frame.

Get two of these and then you can attach the whiteboard to the poles. https://www.amazon.com/Manfrotto-170-Spring-Loaded-Ceiling/dp/B001M4HUGA

If you need a portable way to hang sound blankets, consider using a Backdrop Stand (Links: US | UK | CAN). That way you don't need to rely on what's in the room to set it up. You'll need enough space in the room for it of course.
