I've got both and, honestly, I really prefer the Xbox for most things for several reasons.

  1. The XBOX media center remote is much more user friendly and comfortable in my hand than the PS3 dvd remote. Since I do a lot of streaming/moving watching this is a big deal for me.

  2. The Xbox interface is much easier to navigate.

  3. The Xbox marketplace is much easier to use than the PSN store.

  4. Installs and updates take much less time on the Xbox and happen much less often. It seems that everytime I power up my pS3 I can expect 5-15 minutes worth of crap to update.

  5. Kinect is way more useful than move. There are several excellent Kinect games plus I use the connect video chat feature on a regular basis to talk to friends.

Things I prefer about the PS3:
umm....other than the rare exclusive I'm interested in, nothing really off the top of my head.
    EDIT:
Oh, my kids prefer the PS3 controller. I personally like them both equally well.

Is your goal to use bluetooth headphones? If so you can use this device
https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Receiver-Portable-Wireless-Calling/dp/B00NG78CJU/ref=sr_1_3?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1470668851&sr=1-3&keywords=aukey+bluetooth+transmitter
Basically you plug it into the audio jack of the XD & it will transmit the devices sound over bluetooth, so instead of connecting to the XD you connect to the Aukey.

On the other hand if your goal is to use a bluetooth controller or something of that nature you can simply buy an OTG cable for USB support and use a wireless usb controller off of amazon. Something like this for example http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G6CLY0G/ref=twister_B00GGGNHPM?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

If you're adverse to getting a new controller, you'd just have to play with a wired PS3/PS4 controller through the OTG cable. On the other hand if you're an Xbox guy you can buy a wireless receiver for Xbox Controllers which you can plug in via OTG cable to the XD.

If I understand your questions correct, as in connected to both but not playing the audio from both at the same time?! Then yes, it's possible. I run the same setup. PS4 and PC on my desk and Arctis connected to both so I don't have to change wires or settings when switching where I need sound from.
You'll need to buy a bit of extra bits though. Let me elaborate:

  • 1: To get the best sound you want Toslink connections to both and USB to both for power and chat-mix. You'll need both a toslink and USB splitter. NOT a Hub. Something like this: https://www.amazon.de/CSL-%C3%9Cbertragung-verlustfreie-Signal%C3%BCbertragung-Hifi-System/dp/B0130TX40U
You need 2 IN and 1 OUT (!!!). You'll then connect both the PS4 and the PC to the 2 IN ports and the OUT port goes into the transmitter.

You'll need to do the same for the USB, get a similar box:
    https://www.amazon.de/dp/B01CU4QCRS/ref=psdc_430058031_t2_B074TYDJK2
Connect a USB lead from both the PS4 and the PC to the IN ports and the OUT port goes into the Transmitter.

My two splitter boxes have hardware switches so even if both devices are running, I can toggle sound with a button push (USB switches automatically but toslink is manual). I find that better than auto switching, especially when both are running.

  • 2: If you have it set up like this you'll only need to configure one input on the transmitter. For me that's the PS4 mode so it defaults to Toslink in and Party Chat from USB. All the settings in the box are made for that one connection so whichever feed I'm running into the transmitter from the switch above, gets the equalizer/chatmix settings.

  • 3 Bluetooth is separate so my solution works the same as bluetooth and PS4.

    Again, parts you need:

  • 3 Toslink cables (2 from PS4/PC into splitter, 1 from there to Transmitter)
  • 3 USB cables (2 from PS4/PC into splitter, 1 from there to Transmitter)
  • Toslink splitter/switcher (2 IN and 1 OUT at minimum)
  • USB splitter/switch (2 IN and 1 OUT at minimum)

If your PC supplies USB power while it is switched off, the Transmitter keeps getting power to recharge the batteries. Make sure to set the Display to timeout in that case to avoid burn in!

So with a bit of extra hardware it is possible and works a treat. You can get real short cables to keep it tidy. I mounted the switches on the wall and have just enough length to get to the boxes.

>Nice tip on the PS3 remote. I assume you mean the official PS3 DVD remote, and not the game controller right?

Yeah, the bluray/dvd remote (this one) Find a bluetooth dongle that supports toshiba bluetooth stack (maybe all work but that is 100% tested) and you're good to go.

>This HTPC would ideally stream videos to more than just the TV it's connected to. Right now i'm using my main PC to stream to a couple TVs using PS3 Media Server. That PC is meant for gaming though, and I don't like it being on 24/7 because it is an energy hog.

Oh, ok then. I do wander if it will be powerful enough to transcode more than one 1080p stream though. Well, you'll soon find out.

Demon's Souls is pretty cool if you're into the Dark Souls thing. I wanna recommend Vanquish, but I've heard that the 360 release is better. I'd highly recommend you get a remote. With the remote, a PS3 makes a damn fine Blu-Ray player with all the usual streaming services too. Also, the PS3 supports HDMI-CEC so if your TV also supports it, you can turn the TV on with the PS3, turn the PS3 off with the TV, use some of your TV's remote functions on the PS3, etc.

u/t0ny7 · 2 pointsr/apple

Yes you can do that. Also PVR = "Personal Video Recorder" just FYI.

There are tons of ways of getting content over the internet like Netflix, Hulu, iTunes, Amazon, youtube, pirating, etc.

Also I would suggest checkout out XBMC which is a great media playback program. Also I really like this remove and you can use it with Remote Buddy.

I have a rockcandy wired Xbox 360 knockoff that I use for PC gaming (mainly SNES emu) and it worked great for the PC. There was PS3 styled equivalents. Got it at Best Buy for $25 a couple years ago. It had terrible input lag and issues when I used it on my LG Gpad, whereas the Sony first party Dual Shock 3 had no issues (used both with direct usb input, my Tablet is one of the few blessed with a full size usb port). If you are only going to use one for PC, I'd say they are pretty decent for the price. Here's a link to a cheaper one on Canada Amazon: https://www.amazon.ca/Performanced-Designed-Products-LLC-Controller/dp/B00G6CLY0G/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1464619235&sr=8-3&keywords=rock+candy+controller+ps3 (30% off). If you're in another region, just search for it with "PS3 Controller Rock candy"

If you intend to use Netflix/Crunchyroll then you should get a the PS3 remote makes it a lot easier.

Games will mostly depend on what you like to play, Infamous & Infamous II are probably my favourite PS3 games. There is also a huge selection of Classic PSone and Some PS2 game available as you are new to gaming this is a good way to play some classics and build a decent size collection for cheap.

u/S1ocky · 2 pointsr/gaming

There is. It's Bluetooth and awesome.

Sony PlayStation 3 Blu-ray Disc Remote https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000M17AVO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_MbBszbWHM23GZ

There are probably third party options too.

u/jupiterkansas · 13 pointsr/PS3

Yes, but you'll also want to get the media remote to have better control over playback.

u/mixmasterbru · 1 pointr/hometheater

I have an st60, whats the issue with the usb not working for files? Side note, that's a great tv for people with seemingly no technical knowledge.

From what you've said, I think your best option is buy a new hard drive and swap out the old one in that ps3 and buy a remote like this for your parents. Its quite easy to use, my folks used that for a long time, with MKVs becoming more and more prevalent, it became more annoying, they use their iphones to send it to the apple tv now (wasn't easy to teach them but they got the hang of it)

What else do they have, a computer? phones?

u/MainCranium · 1 pointr/gaming

Who wants to wait for a fucking video game controller to turn on and connect when I want to pause a program right now? Or I could leave an unsightly cable hanging out of my PS4 all the time for charging. My media center is pristine, I don't want dangling cables up in my shit. Not to mention I'm on my third PS4. Boo that. Roku is awesome. Way more convenient, very reliable, and super cheap. The remote for the PS3 Blu Ray remote was so awesome. I was so bummed when they didn't have something similar for the PS4.

$20 "blu-ray" Remote, best investment you can get if you're anywhere close to serious about watching movies on your PS3.

u/project23 · 8 pointsr/gaming

This remote makes the PS3 really feel like a true home theater component. My wife uses Netflix on the PS3 every day but has never picked up the sixaxis controller. The DB/playstation remote sits next to the TV remote and looks right at home.

As for the complaints from ant2206 I have never experienced any of his issues and honestly I have NEVER owned a remote that had 'flush' buttons.

u/O_Apples · 1 pointr/Persona5

Why? You can get a DualShock 3 on Amazon for... $62!?!?!

u/MikeyJBlige · 3 pointsr/PS3

Triangle should bring up a list of options on the screen. Use the left joystick to toggle among the options. Use X to select.

So toggle over the "play" icon and hit X to play.

Alternately, if you plan on watching a lot of movies, buy one of these:

u/Rdubya44 · 1 pointr/Vue

Wonder if something like this would work.

I feel like you should be able to program some kind of remote via BT or IR

u/daihanz · 1 pointr/PS3

Their pretty cheap :/

My PS3 remote doesn't have this issue.

u/trappedmouse · 11 pointsr/pics

Actually, the PS3 has a bluray remote that uses bluetooth. It uses 2AAs and in my experience lasts for months.

u/Zilveari · 1 pointr/gaming

I prefer mine
