Day One I'll have about 35 lbs (15.45 kg) of weight. This is my first time so there are probably several items in there I'll never take with me again, but I'd like to try 'em out once; I also have a shit sleeping bag that desperately needs upgraded. If you want specs, just ask and I'll happily share my spreadsheet!

Edit: The List

The Gear

u/soloxplorer · 4 pointsr/AskLEO

Fellow PNW rider here chiming in. I've found that the "waterproof" labeling on riding gear is more water-resisitant given enough time. However, getting waterproof gear (boots, jacket, pants, gloves) is a good base point. In addition to this, you'll want to look into dedicated rain shells for pants and jackets, something big enough to go over the bulky gear (I find going up one size works well). Most riders like Frogg Toggs, but I prefer shells from outdoor stores like Big5 and REI as I like to hike and can get double use. You'll want to look into a pair of over-gloves to go over your "waterproof" riding gloves, and a pair of boot covers for over your boots. With all this on, I'm basically immune to the rain excepting for the odd drip through the neck area.

FroggToggs makes a fabulous rain suit for $20 in various colors and sizes, and aside from your feet and hands, and possibly your face, they are 100% rainproof and will keep the rest of you bone dry on any length of commute. This is a great rain suit. I can wear it over my full winter riding gear as well as my summer gear. It's bright yellow, so you kinda look like a banana, but in the rain you want as much viz as you can get.

I use these Vega overpants. Totally waterproof, slip on easy, lots of velcro at the bottom for sealing up your feet. Cheap and works great for me.

Sorry no experience with glasses.

Do what every businessman and doctor does on their BMW here, get a good waterproof oversuit, they will keep you dry (maybe not warm, depends on which one) and some even have shoe covers.

Does anyone recommend wearing a poncho? Or one of these?

Check out Alpinestars Tempest gloves for hand protection, and check out these rubber zip up boots that can go over your karting boots. They don't last forever but they could last a day at the track.

We used to wear a cheap version of these on rainy muddy DHI races

Bah. I work in Houston. It's constantly 100 degrees around here. It's hot at the stoplight, but the heat is fine once you get going. I don't work in some sweaty warehouse or anything either. I work in a white-collar office job. Really, as long as you're moving, heat isn't a problem.

As for rain, I got a set of these that I keep with my scooter.

It's certainly not a trivial thing. I don't live in San Diego or some other expensive place. Winter might be more difficult, but I think even that would be doable. Does it take some sacrifice? Absolutely. But I would rather have a scooter and no student loans than a car and student loans.

I wore a suit every day commuting back and forth to work along a bayou in Houston rain or shine for two years.

I got some gaiters (these are awesome)

A rain suit (This one is decent)

and some boot cover (Not crazy about the durability on these, wearing rain boots and keeping dress shoes in backpack is probably a better option)

I wore a dirt bike helmet with the rain suit hood over it.

Bring a towel and a backpack, dry everything off and stuff into back pack, wring out towel and hang it to dry in office.

Bike had a set of fenders.
