Generally they would suspend the engine and trans using a special tool (picture a bar that goes from one fender to the other but it has feet on either end...edit: this tool). This way the subframe can be dropped lower to get easy access to the lower control arm.
On some cars the bar has to rest high up on the fender near where the hood hinges. The hood might be in the way of the tool.
