I fly with firearms all the time and really is a non issue. Get a decent hard case with good hinges, and latches that can accept two or more padlocks. If it's a small case that can fit inside a larger checked baggage then follow proper procedure to have it placed inside that larger checked baggage (more details to follow).

You are allowed to have a maximum of 5 firearms per checked baggage. You must go to the counter to check your baggage, no quick check. At the counter declare you have firearms and be prepared for the inspection. The inspection is either very brief or through but it is supposed to encompass the following.

  • firearms are unloaded chamber empty no magazine inserted. Having actions locked back speeds things along. You want to handle the firearms as little as possible. Do not use chamber flags people get confused what these actually are. In most cases if the action is locked back this was good enough in most cases with nobody touching or inspecting further.
  • All magazines are unloaded
  • any ammo inside the container with firearm must be in original factory box. Aftermarket plastic ammo boxes popular with reloaders are no go.
  • TSA locks or TSA approved locks. This part is complicated but what you actually want are 4 of the beefiest keyed or combination padlocks you can get that will fit your hard case. Use two of the padlocks to secure the case and place the other two inside the case as spares. I do not use TSA locks as they are more expensive, less secure, and you have a very limited selection to choose from. Get two combination locks set to a number you will remember but do not give the combo to TSA. The two locks inside the case should be keyed and left unclasped/open inside a clear bag with a big sticker clearly written "spare locks to be used as needed". Keep the key for the spare locks with you not in the case with firearms. If TSA needs to get into your case after it's been secured at the counter they are supposed to call for you to be present. About half the time they cut the locks and re-lock it with your spares which you only discover when you retrieve your firearms. The excuse they will give is they tried to call you or there was not enough time for the firearm to make the flight otherwise. Even if you have TSA locks they will usually cut the locks because it's faster or they could not find the specific TSA key needed.

Once the inspection is completed you will fill out a form with details regarding the firearms, your home address, etc. A copy goes in the case, and it is locked. If you wish to put the case inside a larger checked baggage to save on an additional item and to be more stealth have the larger baggage ready. Announce your intention to place your locked firearms inside another checked baggage and do so under their supervision. Lock the larger checked baggage with a standard zipper lock. There maybe a baggage tag but it should not have anything outwardly announcing there are guns inside. The bag is then either sent on its way down the conveyor or more likely you are told to go to a specific spot where another TSA person will come to collect your firearms and walk it to where it goes to get loaded on the plane. When you get to your gate pay attention to your named being called if there is an issue with your firearms otherwise you will see them at your final arrival point.

When you arrive it could go several ways and I find this is dependent on the airport. What is supposed to happen is that your checked firearm is held at baggage claim counter where you show ID to retrieve it, or a TSA person will be present when you grab it off the carousel. Both of these instances only happened once each for me over 5+ years flying under current TSA guidelines. The baggage claim counter was a major hassle and I only went there after my firearm did not comedown the carousel. The waiting TSA person only happened Nashville and I believe because they are a great airport to fly in or out with firearms and knew there was a big international level 4 world shoot in town. In that case this very pleasant lady told me to point at my guns s it came around the carousel and she would give me a thumbs up to signal grab it and have a great day. Other than that it's the standard tag check at the exit when you leave with your baggage.

If you are going to buy a new hard case for transport of firearms I highly recommend the Pelican 1750. It is the largest hard case available without paying an oversize fee. It is popular with us 3gun competitive shooters as you can fit a soft gun case inside like the Safariland 3-Gun Competition Bag. In fact if you buy a 1750 specifically get one without the foam and use the $50 towards a soft case. If you are getting a pistol only case get something big enough for the maximum 5 guns. I have a big rolling duffel and use a hard case that is the largest that will fit inside.

Have the serial numbers and other firearms info written out so you can reference it when filling out paperwork. have a card with your address at final destination such as hotel, name, phone number, dates you will be at said location, and home address inside with the firearms. Take one or more pictures of firearms in case, their serial numbers and other markings, along with any accessories. Crop the pictures so that the images look like they might of been taken at the counter or otherwise can be argued to be current as possible.

If for some reason your firearms are separated from you in they did not make the flight they will either be held for you to collect or delivered to you. If at all possible have them held for you to collect to avoid further mishap. If the firearms are lost you pretty much are screwed. You will be told some story about how when they pop up you ill be notified. More time than not they do appear and if it is any consolation I have never lost or had misplaced firearms while flying but have had multiple firearms lost by USPS, and UPS. Be polite, don't freak out but be clear you will contact both police and ATF at appropriate time usually 24 hours.

Regarding # 3, I was looking for the same thing. If you wait around for a local gun show you will see plenty. There are a million range bags out there that cost over 100 bucks and are very high quality. A lot have PALS (MOLLE/ladder) webbing, which was important to me. Your standard tacti-brands make this stuff, like Blackhawk and 5.11. However, you can almost always find a bunch of knock-offs that, for the purpose, are really just as good.

I ended up finding a medium-sized rifle bag with internal and external PALS webbing and two full compartments that is pretty much perfect for storing or carrying a broken-down (upper and lower separated) AR. It is actually a tiny bit longer than I was looking for, since I really wanted about backpack sized, but this fits the bill on both ends since it can be carried as a case or as a backpack (it has backpack straps). I honestly have no idea what brand it is, and I can't check right now because I am away from home, but it either is or is pretty much exactly like this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Discreet-Single-system-backpack-straps/dp/B004FXWI6W/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1312105572&sr=8-4

which, as you can see, sells for next to nothing. I bought mine for, I think, 40 bucks and added about another 60 or so worth of mag and storage pouches, and it has held up very well so far. Construction seems sufficiently rugged and it is at least somewhat discreet and compact (still well above normal backpack size, though, as I mentioned). All in all, I love it.

You can also find a ton of rifle cases around this same price range from UTG. They do a really great job of ripping off other brands and delivering solid stuff - that might not sound like a compliment but it really is: their knock-offs are tough and functional (check out their flashlights for a surefire substitute, for example).

u/_hester_ · 7 pointsr/ar15

At first, I didn't think I would get more than two rifles, so I opted for the Plano foam-padded case. I bought two so I could lock up both rifles (from the kiddos, not thieves), and not take up a ton of room in my house. They're very good cases, and I would recommend them for traveling (either road trips or flying). If you get one of these, don't trust the built in locks, and buy some decent (long bolt) padlocks. Negative: They're not great for taking to the range. They're bulky, and awkward if you need to set them out of the way while you're shooting.

Of course, I bought a third rifle on an impulse, and it came with something like this for free. I actually ended up using this more than the hard cases for range trips since it's much more compact/maneuverable, and just carries the essentials (a few magazines and a good-sized pouch for tactical Skittles). For a one-rifle person, this is probably the best value, and more practical for most people's needs.

That said, few of us actually stay one-rifle gun owners for long. I just punted and bought a $100 metal gun cabinet from Walmart to control access. The nice Plano cases are now just used for traveling rather than storage.

My favorite, though, is a double carbine bag. Even if you only have one rifle (now), it's a great bag with plenty of extra storage. It will fit two sets of eye and ear protection and a lot of pre-loaded magazines along with two rifles. I didn't think I'd ever use the backpack straps until a few weeks ago when we decided to find a place to shoot in the National Forest that required a little hiking off the road. The bag really saved the day, and made the whole experience a lot more comfortable while packing about 40 pounds of rifles + ammo.

Just my $0.02.

Here's my suggestion, two pelican cases locked with padlocks and secured with steel cable via the same padlocks to something sturdy or difficult to move such as a bed frame. Secure the cases with locks and cables and slide them under your bed. You'll need to measure your guns to find the right size case but a standard pelican rifle case can easily fit two long guns and run you $200 seen [here] (http://www.amazon.com/Pelican-1750-Case-Rifle-Black/dp/B000AOMA1S/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1377658619&sr=1-1&keywords=pelican+rifle+case). Or use the Plano knockoffs ([here] (http://www.amazon.com/Plano-108421-Guard-Tactical-42-Inch/dp/B0029KDHRM/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1377657862&sr=8-6&keywords=pelican+rifle+case)), I haven't used them but they are $125 and should fit your needs. You could also go with one big ass pelican case for all four guns, seen [here] (http://www.amazon.com/Pelican-1740-Travel-Vault-Watertight/dp/B003HGUIEW/ref=sr_1_6?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1377658525&sr=1-6&keywords=pelican+rifle+case) for $368

They are waterproof, a little fire-resistant and go straight to the range with no repacking. If someone is determined to remove these cases and has enough time and tools they probably will, but these should thwart a smash & grab. A sturdy steel cable and four good locks shouldn't run you more than $150 + cases = well under your budget. You could also use cheaper cases for the same basic solution but you get what you pay for.

Hope this helps.

u/timwang2006 · 2 pointsr/guns

I use one of these. Under $20 and tax free plus free shipping.

It's perfect for a 10/22 budget. I would advise against only if you plan on using it for air transport as you would probably want to use all 4 padlock slots to make sure it stays closed. Overall, I'd say its 90% as good as my $100 case.

u/brightshapes · 2 pointsr/longrange

Shooting mat and rear bad like the other guy suggested. My first bag was a sock filled with unpoped popcorn and tied off... I still use that bag fairly often. this is the mat/bag that I have and I love it.

One thing that I would highly recommend is a scope lover. If you don't have one now then you might not notice how nice it is to have available to you. It van make a very big difference. I have a weaver (I think) anti cant device (scope level) and it was about $30 but I think it's well worth it. If I ever get another level it will probably be a solid piece instead of the hinged one I have now.

Hope this is helpful!

u/oobacon · 3 pointsr/ClayBusters

I like the beefy Americase offerings, pretty pricey so I always hunt down used ones.

If you need cheap and effective, I've had great experiences with this one: https://www.amazon.com/SKB-Break-down-Shotgun-Soft-Case/dp/B003QYGUME/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1526261354&sr=8-1&keywords=skb+gun

https://www.amazon.com/Bulldog-Cases-Tactical-Additional-Magazine/dp/B002P8LF2M?ref_=bl_dp_s_mw_3019861011&th=1&psc=1

You think you want a hard case but I bet you'll like this a lot better. I know I do. Perfect for going to / from range.

It's a rifle. They're pretty tough. This will keep it from getting dinged up.

u/LockyBalboaPrime · 2 pointsr/guns

What case to get depends on what you want to do with it.

Going from safe to range and not much else? Soft case bag, I like the one that rolls out into a shooting mat.

Going on a road trip and want something more heavy duty to be bounced around in the car and put a solid lock on it? This one does the job for me, there are dozens that serve this tier of hard case though.

Packing a really pricey gun on a long hunting trip and you want it to be able to survive WWIII? Pelican. Pelican is basically the god tier hard case, with the price tag to match. I got this on sale for $170 a few months ago, this is where my hunting rifle lives whenever it comes out of the safe because I care about my hunting rifle a lot more than I do my AR.

u/curzyk · 3 pointsr/ar15

Absolutely. I picked it because it had plenty of room for a scope, and you can see it doesn't taper quite as much as traditional rifle cases. At 39", it easily fits a 36" rifle. Down side is that I couldn't find a merchant still selling it. I'm sure there are offerings very similar to it though. Edit: Some similar (check reviews and Q&A to verify fit with foregrip)

u/AR15cent · 3 pointsr/guns

I would go with some thing like this it has some pouches plus molle webbing to put mag pouches or other thing on the front .
It pretty durable, keep optics well protected and you can put more than one rifle in it.
And it's much nicer with the back pack straps than carrying it with one arm

I use this guy. It's a bag, not a hard case, but it holds 2 rifles fine, and you can squeeze in 3 but that's pushing it. I just threw in some packing foam for extra padding.

If you want a hard case, I've heard Plano is pretty nice. They have a case for every budget.

Its actually pretty nice. YKK zippers, well built. My 11" fits in it nicely.

I think mine might have come from ebay for about $50. Id sarch there too. It's the 'explorer' brand

I'd opt for the rifle case/mat combo.

Midway's is $10 more on sale right now: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/939497671/midwayusa-heavy-duty-shooting-mat-tactical-rifle-case

The Midway lightweight mat is the only one I know of off hand that will fold up small enough to fit in a range bag. It's on sale for $30. That said, it's very basic.

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/939107555/midwayusa-lightweight-tactical-shooting-mat

I don't think I'd go with a roll up/sleeping bag mat type mat.

u/theholylancer · 1 pointr/guns

i like plano 42 in for longer stuff, and if you have 5-10 mags with that tavor then it will do nicely too.

https://www.amazon.com/Plano-Weather-Tactical-Case-42-Inch/dp/B00G9QOBX6

u/ducksarewet · 2 pointsr/Shotguns

I have the same combo set but I only keep the 28" on it. I use this:
http://www.cabelas.ca/product/65171/cabelas-canada-floating-shotgun-case

because I mostly waterfowl hunt, and it floats/has an ammo pocket. Its a bit long so the nose bend if you set it down on that end, but the gun fits snug side to side and is guickly pulled out when I get to a spot.

You should never store your gun in a case like this though. THey can't breath, so moisture builds up and causes rust. I store mine in a sock like this:

http://www.amazon.ca/Allen-Company-Shotgun-Scopes-52-Inch/dp/B00014ZY0Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457020499&sr=8-1&keywords=shotgun+sock

I use this breakdown case: http://amzn.com/B003QYGUME

It's cheap and fits my winchester 101 fairly well. I use a breakdown because I drive a sedan and it's much easier to get a 30" o/u in the trunk.

u/Ratus_ · 3 pointsr/guns

Like everyone else has said ammo, mags, moar mags and ammo.

Also, the cheap Vism 36" case is fine, it'll fit your Sport with an optic.

The only thing that sucks on the Sport/Sport II is the cheap unlined plastic handguard. It's a pain to swap out because it's longer than spec. If you want to change it get a handguard removal tool and a friend.

And you might want one of these StripLULA and stripper clips.

u/MikeyG916 · 2 pointsr/guns

I have several 10/22's including a polymer stocked stainless barrel carbine with scope, a polymer stocked stainless barrel takedown and a classic manlicher wood stock version.
I don't notice any real poi shift when using the takedown versus the other two.
Plus the takedown can be purchased with a dedicated bag for it.
If you can't get the one with the bag, the same bag is absorbed on Amazon here:

Well you can just go buy a simple gun sock for $10 or you can go to any sporting goods store and buy a plastic case for about $20-25. We are gonna need more information about what you are looking for to make a good suggestion. I gave you a link for the case that I have. Its simply and works.

Shit's gonna dry out, maybe it's good if it doesn't get bumped, I'm not knowledgeable enough to know.

I do know milsurps and they always come soaked in a thick grease, I would say the modern equivalent is white lithium grease, like Tetra Gun grease... they have instructions for long term storage.

Me, I use Lucas Extreme Gun oil where oil is needed and Tetra Gun Grease everywhere else and then it goes in a rifle sock that then goes in a safe with a renewable dessicant and lastly a no rust vapor capsule. Make sure you cycle your gun every few months when you check on your lube.

My bolt gun basically just lives in my [NcStar] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003G2S6J6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) case. It doubles as a mat and is more than big enough to get the majority of my body off the ground. I'm 6'2". usually my knees are towards the rear of the mat with my toes on the ground.

Well in light of this information, I will change my answer to: that plano case is trash, I have one. You can get through the plastic with a knife it's so thin and wobbly, and the hinges will literally fall off. So you'd need 3 locks to secure it properly. Also inside is shitty clamshell foam and your shit will slide all around inside it.

You want to upgrade to at least this: https://www.amazon.com/Plano-Weather-Tactical-Case-42-Inch/dp/B00G9QOBX6

Just picked this SKB case up to use with my Browning O/U.

Much higher quality than I expected for $60, no regrets.

Relax. I grew up in a house with no safes, no trigger locks and plenty of guns. We just had them in gun racks in our closet.

Personally, I prefer to have them put away because it keeps the dust off them. This case is $25 and looks like it ships free from Amazon. It also probably accepts a lock.

It won't stop a thief, but you can slide it under your bed and hopefully a would-be criminal won't find it. And if they do, it is the fault of the criminal, not yours. Plus, as someone else said, it's a long-gun, so it's more likely to be sold for drugs than used in a crime.

TL;DR get a cheap gun case to transport and store gun or how you are doing it now is fine.
