(Part 2) Reddit mentions: The best skin sun protection

i have pores so large theyre visible from a decent distance away. Is there a way to decrease their size? I currently use Cetaphil Daily Cleanser twice a day. Once in the morning, once at night before bed. Both in the shower. I periodically wash my face throughout the day but if i miss once chance to get rid of grease i immediately break out within 12 hours. I've tried Proactiv a long time ago, I've tried Clean and Clear spot treatment, Clean and Clear oil absorbing sheets, which works pretty well, i just ran out. Sebamed clear face gel, Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-touch Sunscreen, SPF 30, and even Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, For all skin types and theyve ALL made me breakout except the Cetaphil daily cleanser Normal to Oily skin...

Now i've used all these products at random times... not all on the same. I've really been actively trying to get this under control since late 2014. So each time something makes me breakout, i'll try a new product.. At one time I was using (per the suggestion of a beauty stylist) to use cetaphil daily cleanser, Sebamed face gel, and then Neutrogena Ultra sheer Sunscreen in the morning to get me ready for the day. Then use the absorbing sheets throughout the day to maintain a clean face. Not get any dirt in my pores.

So thats the story... if someone, ANYONE can help me, I would appreciate it so much. If i really need to see a dermatologist, i guess thats my last resort. I really like to try all options before seeing a doc. Please let me know if you can help out. It's greatly appreciated!!!

Hey, I’m a guy with “good skin”. What honestly surprised me was the quality of my skin after using sunscreen regularly — I didn’t realize how much sun affected things. I know you say you have normal skin, but some of the below should hopefully help getting started on a basic routine that’ll become evident in the quality of your complexion.

Wash the face morning and night. It’s helpful to use a little bit of moisturizer since sunscreens are kind of hit and miss in this regard, so I’d suggest Cerave cream in the white tub to apply to your damp face as needed.

Afterwards, ideally, slather on a bit of sunscreen on your face, neck, ears, and other sun exposed places. My personal favorite currently is the Jack Black sun guard since it’s not greasy and I use it on my arms and hands too, Otherwise, pick up Cerave’s AM moisturizer. It’s my favorite drug store type sunscreen. A nicer one too are the EltaMD sunscreens.

If your face is shiny after some of thing I’d suggest picking up something like Magical Moringa from Lush that’s mattefying. A shine control powder to dab lightly on can work good too — doesn’t look like you have anything on while still taking care of your skin.

That’s basically my suggestions at least. At night just use moisturizer and the mask after washing.


As far as the back acne, in the shower let some salicylic acid sit on the area for a minute or two and rinse it off. I use Zapzyt. The other thing I would recommend after the shower is to apply some Differin to the affected area — Differin used to be what a dermatologist prescribed me years ago and it now available over the counter fortunately. Should be cleared up in no time.

Oooh, this is up my alley!

I wear sunscreen EVERY single day, I even have a hand cream with SPF 50 that I put on before I drive. When I go on hikes I either lather up using Thinkbaby safe sunscreen for my body or I wear long sleeves and coverup. I'm Korean so having a fair complexion and taking good care of the skin, avoiding the sun, and keeping hydrated has been ingrained in me since I was little. Despite that I only started wearing sunscreen on my face diligently about 3 months ago because I thought using a foundation with SPF was enough, but I was wrong. In reality I get oily and I also don't reapply so I wasn't as protected as I thought. This resulted in new sun spots forming on my forehead and chin which I noticed right away. I got an IPL laser treatment to get rid of them literally 2 weeks ago and it helped remove the sunspots that developed overtime as well as 2/3 of my freckles. Before I got the treatment I was a big fan of niacinamide to help fade pigmentation and moisturizers or toners with Liquorice root extract for brightening (explained more in detail here.)

I could go on and on about skin stuff, but for my face I use the All around safe block essence sun milk SPF 50 by Missha. This one is the best for me because it's in a creamy liquid form (essence vs cream) that blends well into the skin and actually adds moisture which helps my foundation apply smoothly. No white cast, no piling, no oiliness, only good things. I've tried the Sunprise Mild airy finish SPF 50 sunscreen by Etude house which is super popular but found the texture was too thick for me to apply on my face every day so I use it on the backs of my hand or neck if I'm going outside.

I'm 26 years old and this is my skin now with a light BB cream. You can see that my freckles are pretty dark because the IPL laser makes them darker before they eventually flake off, so this was taken about 3 days ago and those are now gone completely. I think applying sunscreen and following a 3-5 step skin care routine with Asian products will help with premature skin aging, wrinkles, sun damage in the future. The IPL laser was my first cosmetic treatment which was a birthday gift, but I am considering getting facials every once in a while to keep hyperpigmentation at bay. Also, I don't get a lot of sun exposure because I avoid it like the plague. You'll see me at the beach covered up or spending 15 min lathering sunscreen on until I'm a pale ghost basically.

Don't know if this counts as "sunscreen," but shea butter has some low level of SPF (6 if I remember?). It's too greasy for me for day use if I'm going to be out in public.

These following are safer options compared to most sunscreens out there, but are pricy ($15-20 a tube). For me it's worth it since it's my body.

My favorite is BurnOut Kids (looks like it's sold out right now on Amazon). It's a white and orange tube for about $20, nano zinc oxide, and the white color oxidizes very well so your face will not be white. A bit tacky at first but dries dry and fairly light feeling. No other sunscreens come close for me when it comes to safety and performance. It's SPF30+ UVA/UVB broad spectrum protection and very water resistant.

Badger makes safe sunscreens with nano zinc oxide, but they're shea butter based and are extremely greasy and turn your face white without oxidizing almost at all. I don't like them unless you don't care if your face looks greasy and white. I like the unscented SPF30+ one best out of their sunscreens. It's SPF30+ UVA/UVB broad spectrum protection and very water resistant. There's also a baby version but I haven't tried it.

I feel like my skincare routine is so long. Haha. I'm trying to use up my hoard of samples so I'm curious how my routine will change once I'm out of those (if I ever get there).

They require sealed sunscreen??? That's shitty. I'm a sunscreen junky and it is incredibly rare to find sealed versions. If Hard has lockers, that's the best way to not have to have a brand new sunscreen for each day.

Sunscreen pouches are kind of expensive for what you get and I've only seen them in spf 30. There are many other brands though.

This sunscreen stick comes in sealed packaging. I keep this one in my purse and like it, I just recommend to rub it in after liberally applying it. This has been my face sunscreen this summer and comes in sealed packaging. It rubs in easily and has a light feel.

Asian sunscreens often are in sealed packaging and I highly recommend the Biore Water Essence and Biore Water Gel.

Spray sunscreens rarely come sealed unless you buy in 2-packs. Even then the actual dispenser portion usually isn't sealed. I just bought this and it came in an Amazon plastic bag so that might count and at least it's cheap.

Sunfood Magnesium Oil Spray: I use this every night before bed and it makes me relax. It’s expensive but I will probably continue using it.

Thinkbaby Sunscreen: Love putting it on because of the scent. It doesn’t leave that much of a white cast, but I think it is a little less strong because I tanned through it after one day of sun. I feel it gets used up fast.

Lilycup: I kind of hate them so far. I’m hoping it is because I’m doing something wrong, and that I’ll get better.

Silk & Lace Eye Sleep Mask: This covered a big part of the face and blocked out light reasonably and quite well for being white. It’s silk on the underside so my face didn’t get hot or irritated.

Bonus: Flat eyebrows! I wanted them for a year, shaped them little by little and finally found out it doesn't fit me at all! Yesterday I tried shaping my eyebrow with a white liner and an eyebrow pencil. It turned out SO WELL! I lined the outsides of the eyebrow to literally a triangle with the white liner and filled the insides with the eyebrow pencil, so that I have a middle arch, almost like this. I felt transformed!

I also wish I could wear babydolls but they make me look unproportional.

Hi there.
I could really use some help getting started with a routine; I've read the sidebar and been on skincare-addiction.com and read quite a lot there about my skintypes and such - but I still feel that this is quite a jungle with a lot of different pitfalls.

Some basic information about me: 21 year old, male, combination skin.

My current routine:

AM: Use a cleanser (with a cotton pad) after waking up, to cleanse my face.

PM: Same as in the morning - clean my head with a cleanser (using a cotton pad).

If the spray you ordered for your back has salicylic acid in it, you're probably good just using it alone - SA is a BHA, which will help exfoliate and slough off skin cells (gradually), which can help with the acne itself and possibly with the hyperpigmentation left there by previous breakouts. Do you have the name of that spray thing handy?

For my face, I prefer the Neutrogena Sheer Dry Touch, but it does have sort of a smell to it. I like that it turns into a soft powder finish, though! This Coola spray is available unscented, although it's pricey. L'Oreal makes a dry oil spray, which is scented but not sunscreen-smelling. You might also have good luck with sunscreen sprays made for babies, which are usually fragrance-free!

Important Sidenote: I'm a runner too. Do you run outside? Be sure to wear a waterproof/sweat proof sunscreen, it will help with skin damage as well as texture!! I run in the AM, and my pre-run routine is: Wipe my face down with micellar water, rinse it off with water, apply Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch SPF 30 After my run I wash thoroughly and continue my AM routine as normal.

I checked out the Target wipes you listed and don't see them as truly exfoliating, with the ingredients being "eh". A budget-friendly drugstore exfoliator you could try is Stridex in the red box. It is super popular on this subreddit (I haven't tried it, I use PC 2% BHA but it's more expensive). BHAs helps with clogged pores (closed comedones), which might be what your tiny bumps are.

Make sure you moisturize at night!

I just went to the Bahamas with this sunscreen and fell in love with it. My skin is super fair, super sensitive, and acne prone. I didn't burn at all or have a reaction.

Oh no, I hope it's not discontinued! I bought it in a CVS originally but I've been buying it on Amazon, it's still available there if you feel like giving it a try. Obviously it's an individual preference thing but it just feels like body lotion to me.

A bit of acne there. Use a face wash with Glycolic Acid to clean out your pores, use a sunscreen (non-clogging and excellent for sensitive skin - http://www.amazon.com/Neutrogena-Ultra-Sheer-Sunblock-Ounce/dp/B0018SC8VW/) and an eye cream at night and you're set. The price is worth the outcome and it lasts ages.

Even so your physical appearance isn't an issue as such because you look pretty cute. Maybe your crush can sense a hesitancy and a pre-fear that you'll be rejected. Get someone non-judgemental to talk to (therapist, mentor, older friend) about feeling good regardless of the outcome of asking someone out.

You should wear a broad spectrum sunscreen everyday. This is true in winter. This is true if you do not run outside. This is true for everyone, everyday.

I'm not a skin expert, so I can't provide you with advice about your bumps.

But I could recommend a sunscreen. I really like MD SolarScience Sunscreen because it has high SPF, is formulated specifically so it doesn't aggravate acne or roseaca, and applies super smoothly like a makeup primer. The downsides are its high cost and it leaves a slight white cast . But I tolerate it since I've literally never gotten a sunburn whilst using this sunscreen.

I also like the Clarins sunscreen since it was watery/milky, so it was super easy to apply and you didn't need that much product. I used the tinted kind since I had acne and PIH at the time.

I didn't break out using either of these sunscreens, but everyone is different.

First of all, super upvote for clever title. Second, my husband is probably the most abundant sweater of all time, and he also tans and rarely burns and is annoyingly stubborn about sunscreen, even when we're on trips ON the equator. Needless to say I've been hunting down the perfect screen for years, here are the ones he likes (he still has to reapply every 30 minutes because he is just dripping at that point)

I am fair skinned and outside most of the day in the summer and it works so well. A lot of American sunscreens, even oil free ones, tend to sting or make my face sweat more and then feel like this hot greasy layer on my skin. This stuff you absolutely cannot tell you're wearing it.

Burn Out has a matte finish not very white entirely physical sunblock that is great. Not the cheapest, but I'm really happy with it.

I've used Eucerin Daily Protection for about two years now, and I'm pretty happy with it. It has SPF 30. It doesn't feel greasy to me (though I have dry skin due to acne meds).

I really wanted to love the the CeraVe sunscreen but it has: Methylparaben and Propylparaben. I now use the Vanicream sunscreen and the Neutrogena Sheer Zinc . They don't burn/irritate my skin. Hope this helps!

I picked it up fairly recently but I'm already in love. The biggest thing I liked about it was that it's alcohol-free, which is quite difficult to find in an Asian product. It takes a little longer to dry on my face, but the texture is so soothing and lightweight so when it does finally dry it feels like I have nothing on. It also doesn't leave any sort of "finish" on my face--not matte but not dewy either.

Since I started getting serious about skincare and wearing sunscreen regularly (around february), I haven't repurchased a single facial sunscreen because they're always been something wrong with them. This is the first one I can say I will absolutely be reordering (and it's available for prime shipping so I can have it in two days!)

I like Eucerin Daily Protection Moisturizing Face Lotion, SPF 30, seems to be one of the best priced ones that don't clog your pores and make you break out.

I like to go in with little or nothing. Unless there's a high chance of rain that day, a rain coat probably isn't going to be worth carrying around. You can get free cups of water from any vendor that has cups, and water is heavy, so you might be better off leaving the Nalgene bottle too. In my experience, I walk at least five or six miles in a day at the parks on the low end, and that kind of thing gets really heavy really fast.

Sunglasses and sunscreen are necessities, though. I recommend sunscreen wipes, like these ones. You can put a few in your pocket and reapply throughout the day. If you get those and can put your sunglasses in a pocket, you can go in without a bag at all. I go to the parks a lot, and I used to carry a bag full of stuff every time, but over the years it's shrunk to the point where I never take one into the parks.

Interesting. I use the LRP Anthelios 60 cooling water lotion sunscreen and it definitely does not do this. I sweat a ton at work and wear it every day, so I feel like someone would have said something by now if it did.

I got you. I honestly didn't realize how many sunscreens that they had under the same name. So after I moisturizer it starts out with a bit of a whitecast and a greasy feeling but it takes about 20mins and alot of rubbing for it to set into the skin and not have that greasy feeling. You can tell that it has melted in when you can touch your face and not really feel anything, nor can you feel it on your face.

Biore Sarasara UV Aqua is my go-to. I've also had good results with Hada Labo UV whitening emulsion.

I like mineral sunscreens, which is probably why they're matte. I use either Burn Out Eco Sensitive or Cyberderm Simply Zinc Sun Whip (the latter is extra matte).

I had that problem before. I figured out that it was because avobenzone (the main ingredient in most sunscreens) can cause stains when it mixes with hard water, and there's very hard water in my current apartment. Solution is to switch to a brand that doesn't have it. You mostly want to look for ones marketed as "baby" sunscreen. I recommend this one, but note that you'll need to rub it in more vigorously than you do most sunscreens these days.

Need Sunscreen Help

I just recently bought the [Neutrogena Ultra Dry Touch Sunscreen] (https://www.amazon.com/Neutrogena-Ultra-Dry-touch-Sunscreen-Ounces/dp/B00008IHO3) (except its 55 SPF instead of 30) after seeing it recommended on this sub as a good chemical sunscreen, but EVERYTIME i put it on, without fail, it leaves the absolute worst powdery white residue on my face after 20 minutes or so, like I legitimately look like I've been rolling around in flour. Is this normal? I'm using the recommended 1/4 tsp. amount (although I might be using slightly more, I'm not good with eyeballing).

A few facts about my skin/routine:

per someone else's rec here, i bought and am having a fine time with this. very affordable and i don't feel it on my arm/chest skin. (UNLIKE SOME OTHERS I COULD NAME, UGH.)

My hair is thick but I have a tendency to get sunburned in that spot. And lately the skin on my face has started showing sun damage, which caused me to get more serious about sun protection.

I use Colorescience for my hair part, although when I bought it in the spring the price was much lower. It's powder sunscreen in a brush, and translucent. I got "fair" and it doesn't show up on my dark blond/reddish hair. I love it, especially the convenience of carrying it with me and touching up my face/head/ears, but I wouldn't pay the current price of $50. Yowza.

There's an ELF powder sunscreen that might work for this. A fraction of the cost ($6) and much more product than the Colorescience stuff. I haven't tried it yet but it's on my list. Some people say it's a little dark for people with very light skin, some pale folks say it's fine.

What should I research, buy, and patch test next?

I have combination acne prone skin. I see decent results. I don't much care for aha+bha cleanser, #10, because it leaves my skin feeling dry, and because it seems a bit gimmicky. I also don't care much for #6 because it makes my skin feel too greasy for the day, and not greasy enough for night.

I don't see how any of it would aggravate your acne unless you have a sensitivity to some of the ingredients. I think you should cleanse with water and moisturise in the morning too though. I have no personal experience with that sunscreen but from a quick search it seems it leaves a bad white cast. So I would probably try something else. Maybe this one, also by Neutrogena? Very often recommended in this sub.

No problem. 50spf is fine, but I hear anything about 30spf is overkill. No worries, though!
