Top Reddit comments about Children's Sports & Outdoors Books:

u/iceschade · 10 pointsr/books

I don't know a lot of titles for the youngest ages, though the Junie B. Jones and Magic Treehouse books are favorites of my mother's elementary-aged students. Speaking of magic, you can't go wrong with The Magic Schoolbus. Oh! And Where the Wild Things Are.

As suggested by /u/jpop23mn, the Berenstein Bears are great books for young readers (I loved them so much as a kid), and Dr. Seuss is classic.

For middle-schoolers, I recall enjoying Maniac Magee (though I don't recall much about it), lots of Bruce Coville's monster books, the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series, and one of my favorites, The Phantom Tollbooth. My sister enjoyed the Warriors series (and still reads them now as a college student). Then there's classics like Where the Red Fern Grows and Bridge to Terabithia, though those books cover some difficult subject matter (death).

Ghost stories are much beloved, and if you can find folklore and fable specific to various cultures, you can learn about other cultures while enjoying a good story!

Some other fantastic books to have around are The Daring Book for Girls and The Dangerous Book for Boys, both of which teach all kinds of fantastic information and skills while also being entertaining. I especially urge you to get the Daring Book for Girls if you have a daughter, because it not only teaches useful skills like changing tires and woodworking, but it also teaches about strong, independent, successful women through history. It promotes independence, self-esteem and self-confidence, which (in my opinion) are vital to any young person's upbringing, but especially women, since so much of the media and society seems bent on making women insecure, dependent and subservient. (Please excuse my politics.)

The Chronicles of Narnia are fantastic, if you don't mind that they're a religious allegory. When I was a kid, I read them for fun, and didn't give a damn about the religious aspect. (I'm agnostic.) Another good series is the Dark Materials series, though some parents avoid it because of Pullman's anti-religious sentiments. Again, I didn't care about that, I just enjoyed a good story.

Hopefully, with a big enough selection of books, your kids will be able to choose their own books by high school. But it's still nice to keep around some young adult and adult novels for the kids to explore. The Dragonlance novels are fantasy novels set in a D&D-inspired world, but this setting has more of a chivalric, idealistic mood, which is good for young adult readers as well as adults. You've also got the Harry Potter series, which is kind of a given...

The challenge is finding adult novels that are appropriate for your kids. If you are trying to avoid exposing your children to certain ideas before a certain age, then you'll have to personally read and consider each book before you put it on their shelf. If you're the kind of parent who allows their kid to read what they want to read, doing your best to answer their questions and put the stories into context, then it's a little easier. If your kid reads Jurassic Park, they're going to be exposed to an awful lot of violence, but they're also going to learn some fascinating scientific information as well. Crichton's books are science-fiction with a strong scientific background, so they're educational as well as thrilling, but they've got adult themes that might be better for more mature readers. (That being said, I was reading them at a young age.)

I hope this is a decent start. There are lots of good lists online, too. I'd suggest checking out GoodReads and various Amazon lists. Just remember that it's up to you to choose what you want your kids to be exposed to.

Edit: As a male, I have a distinct lack of experience with books aimed at young females. I would like to think that a good book can be enjoyed by boys and girls alike, but some books have more of a gender-focus than others.

I’m not sure what ages or levels you’re leading, or whether you’re inheriting a previous troop or starting from scratch, so here’s my most general advice...

Don’t burn yourself out trying to do the badges. Sit down alone with the badge list and look through the requirements for each badge. Then make a list of the ones that you know you can facilitate. Then present that list to the girls to vote on and have them narrow it down to the top 3 that they’re most excited about.

Don’t buy the binders. You can find the badge steps and sample meeting plans online. People scan and post the binder innards to Pinterest. My local library even has copies if I need one. I also tell all my families to save their money and just buy the basic uniforms.

I stay organized with an $8 Girl Scout planner from Amazon and a Band (free app/website that’s private and only open to our troop and parents). We post our calendar and photos and information there.

And speaking of your troop calendar: set up the troop meetings and events according to your schedule. Don’t bend over backwards trying to meet Tuesdays after school if Saturdays fit you best. Plan out your year (but stay flexible).

Don’t take it personally if girls leave because they have other commitments or families decide it doesn’t fit their schedule. As long as you’re not kicking a girl out for disciplinary issues, just leave the door open for them to return at a later date.

Be absolutely crystal clear with parents about how the troop bank account works and the rules for the money if they leave the troop. I’ve heard horror stories about parents demanding “their cut” of cookie sales or asking for checks to be cut to them when their daughter leaves the troop. Nip that in the bud upfront. I’ll PM you the text of a ‘welcome letter’ that I give to all new parents that covers everything.

It’s the girls’ money, not mine. So if they earn $500 from cookie sales and they vote as a group that they want to have a blowout party with pizza and bowling and roller skating? OK! My job as the adult leader is to remind them that they might also have upcoming camping trip expenses, or upcoming supplies needed for a project, and to help them manage their budget. $500 is not a “real” amount of money to 8-year-olds, but even they can see that blowing 2/3 of their entire bank account on one party might not be wise.

And listen to the girls! Don’t burn yourself out trying to do badge work if they would rather do arts & crafts. Don’t force them to do big involved volunteer service projects if they’d rather be doing STEM activities. Don’t drag them to museums if they’d rather be camping.

Yes, there’s room for new experiences and growth and change, but if you’re miserable and the girls are miserable and nobody is having fun then something is wrong. As each troop grows and changes they tend to have their own characteristics. Some troops just wanna have fun. Some troops are gung-ho about breaking cookie sales records. Some troops focus all their time on community service. Some troops are happy to do arts & crafts every week. Be upfront with new parents about what your troop is like. (My girls love STEM and camping and field trips. I’m laid-back about cookies, so if you sell 50 and you’re happy? I’m happy. If you sell 300 and you’re miserable? I’m not happy. I’m strict and I don’t allow phones while we’re having meetings or camping. I’m all about free field trips and saving the troop money for camping and travel.)

A stand is purely decorative, and will blow a chunk of your budget without actually accomplishing anything. A bowl is also unnecessary unless you buy a loose soap like Williams or Haslinger are only (mostly?). Other hard soaps such as DR Harris can be purchased with a bowl, but if you just buy a refill puck some sort of container will be necessary.

I second the recommendation for the kits from Maggard and Stirling. In addition to what you need they also include a DE razor and some blades. The razors and brushes are functionally identical, but I strongly prefer the soap in the Maggard kit.

Do not under any circumstances buy that Parker pure badger brush. The hair used is low quality, and the price is astronomical for what you get. When it comes to inexpensive brushes, synthetics are the safest choice, but you can squeeze a decent badger brush into that budget if you go with the Maggard 2-band or one of the Chinese vendors that sell directly on eBay such as Frank Shaving, Virginia Sheng, or Ace Shaving.

When it comes to soaps, your choices are nearly unlimited. If you spend ~$25 on the brush and want to blow your entire budget, hunt up an Amazon bargain on a DR Harris soap. They usually sell for $35-40, but at the moment you can get Arlington for just under $20 shipped or Windsor for under $25. Or you can save a few bucks and get a tin of Pre de Provence, which is also outstanding. Then there are all the great artisan soaps. If I had to pick one to take to a desert island it'd probably be LASSCo. Topanga Fougere, but IMO the best bang for a beginner's buck is Barrister & Mann Latha (bonus points because it's inexpensive enough to add a matching aftershave and stay in your budget). These and dozens of others are also available from Maggard Razors.

31 days for Augustus

I like August because it is the end of summer which means fall is almost here & the weather is finally cooling down. Also even though it has been a while since I have been in school I take full advantage of all the back to school sales. Especially at Target, the best time to stock up on stuff I need around the house. Also is there anything better than baseball in August? I think not.

Munchkin would be nice or speaking of August baseball This baseball book.

Thanks for the contest!

In 6th grade I wrote a paper about this book and sent it to Gary Paulsen. He sent me back this book, with this inscription, which reads:

>For SGMD1,

>With every good wish -

>Gary Paulsen

>I'm sorry I don't have time to write a personal letter to you. Hope this makes up for it.

>P.S. It was a great thesis.

One of the fondest memories of my childhood.

Help Jeff recover from this setback by buying his children's books centered on sports stories: 1) Tom Brady and Bill Bellichick; 2) Cavaliers win 2016 NBA title; 3) 2016 Chicago Cubs; and 4) Crimson Tide. Bonus book: NASA sending men to the moon.

This is the coloring book I had as a kid... I still have a love for goalie masks of all styles, largely thanks to a lot of time spent on this.

Not this super bowl, but when I was a little kid I had this childrens book that you put a picture of your kids face in it and the story is about them as an eagle leading them to a superbowl.

I still have mine in my closet with the news paper from when the eagles won.

Well, there's always the classic Scrubs on Skates series. Published in the 50s and written by Neil Young's dad Scott.

As for non-fiction, I really liked From the Broadcast Booth by Brian McFarlane. He also has a series profiling the Original Six teams. Link to Leafs one because bias.

Now is my fuckin' chance! I've been pushing this thing for weeks with no success—I still cannot tell whether you guys like him or not—but this is 500 pages of rambling and preposterously detailed press conference interview answers, most of it fucking recent, technically a great read, available for $6 if you can afford to go download Kindle for PC

I remember years ago when "The Dangerous Book for Boys" came out there was some uproar that galled at the concept of a book just for bys and decrying it for not being a unisex book. Yet there are tens of thousands of 'girls only' books on the market.

I'm fine with a book being targeted at just one gender, its a fact that we live in a gendered society. The hormones coursing through our veins make us have different emotions and drives. How we are raised also to a huge extent shapes our desires and emotions. A girl can be whatever she wants and is accepted, she can be prissy or a tomboy and they won't be ostracized at all. Boys on the other hand are conditioned to not show weakness or be soft, otherwise they are picked on, made fun of, or even punished f or acting outside of the 'norm'.

Where am I going with this? I don't know, but this is the society we have and if a bokk wants to target men, I'm fine with it.

u/Rsubs33 · 8 pointsr/eagles

I don't know about Super Bowl but there is an Eagles 101 book. It mentioned previous championships. Don't know if there is an updated one though.

Their heads are on the aggressive side and not the best quality, farmed out from India I think. I'm not saying India is bad, their Utopia razor is really good and Parker is reputable. What soap and blades are you using? I'd start with CO Bigelow/Proraso from bath/body works and either an Astra or a Gillette Silver Blue blade and go from there. You'll need a decent brush, best bang for the buck is the $25 Virginia Sheng Silvertip brush. Once broken in that thing performs as well as a $100 brush.

If he's big on reading, I absolutely adore The Dangerous Book for Boys. It has a tremendous amount of amazing things to do and read about. It's not aimed at combatting toxic masculinity, but it presents itself as a work for boys in a very non-toxic way.
