Congratulations and get ready for a whole new you!! A family member had gastric done a few years back and is doing wonderful! My mom really could use it but refuses because she sees it as "the easy way out". I wish she would stop being so stubborn and get it done because her health isn't getting any better. So super huge congrats to you for being brave and going through all that you've had to with your insurance to get it done.
This kettle bell is something health related that I have kind of been wanting. From what I hear the kettle bell is a great tool that you can use in multiple ways to target multiple parts of your body. It would definitely be a learning curve because I have never really exercised before, which is why I'm kind of hesitant to just go out and get one, but I think it would be cool!
The most recent good thing that I can think of is that my bogus case with CPS and the Phoenix Police that my ex opened against me has officially been closed!! I got the letter in the mail yesterday. So yay! :)
Good luck to you!

fear cuts deeper than swords
My experience is that the usual starting weight is 8-16kg (17-34lb approximately) and that is what the instructors usually start people with when I went to some KB-classes.
8kg for girls, 12kg for guys and 16kg for big strong dudes.
I own a 12 and a 16 and my GF started to train with my on the 12. It worked but was a bit much for some movements or harder circuits. As I don't do a lot of KB work now a days I still don't need anything bigger.
The trick is that you can have a progression with just one kettlebell. Start learning and getting strong in the two handed swing. Add in high pulls and goblet squats. Then start doing one arm movements, swing, clean&jerk and finally snatch.
My view is that if you just want good at home training you really don't need a heavier KB until you actually can do several snatches or even use snatch in conditioning circuits with the one you have. Keep it simple :)
So my recommendation: Buy an 8kg (16lb or what the closest one is). It might feel heavy if you are weak, but I'm sure you can work the two hand swing and start from there. It will feel great when you finally bang out a set of one arm snatches!
Also, I recommend competition style KBs if you got the money (a bit more expensive then the cheapest option, but not so much more then the avarage "casall" or something KB at the local store, at least in sweden)

I've used a lot of different cast iron kettlebells and my experience with them has been that you get what you pay for.
I have a 35lb CAP powder coat sitting on my desk right now that will get included in the next iteration of my ongoing kettlebell review, and for what it cost me I could have purchased a much nicer Rep Fitness kettlebell or even a Kettlebell Kings kettlebell currently on sale. The finish on the CAP bell isn't as clean as either of the other two brands and the coating is considerably rougher. I expect this bell will tear up my hands a bit on high rep work.
I also have a 35lb Titan Fitness kettlebell I just bought, and even though it only cost $43 shipped, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The finish is sloppy with prevalent seams and burrs on the handle, the coating is unevenly applied, and it wobbles badly when placed on a flat surface. It's so bad that I had to reach out to Titan's customer service to confirm what I got was actually a legitimate product and not a knockoff. I've not yet heard back from them on this yet, but I'm likely going to send it back either way.
I've got a 16kg Yes4All kettlebell on the way, which cost me $40 shipped. I don't have high hopes for it, but if it does happen to surprise me with the quality then I'll update this comment accordingly.
Many people will say "it's just a hunk of metal with a handle, who cares if it's cheap". To some extent that's true, and if you don't use it often then a cheap kettlebell will likely fit your need. However, my view is that anyone serious about training with kettlebells should invest in quality tools. This applies to any training regimen you're serious about. Does a serious runner wear cheap shoes? Will a serious golfer buy cheap clubs?
If you're looking to save some money but still invest in some quality kettlebells, take a look at Rep Fitness or Fringe Sport. Both of them are making good quality kettlebells at reasonable prices.
You may also want to take advantage of the sale Kettlebell Kings is running on Amazon right now, since you can get many of the most common sizes for $10-20 cheaper than the same product on their website, with free shipping.
Diet
You need to buy the staples. Most healthy food is frugal i.e. rice, oatmeal, meat, beans, lentils. If you aren't to concerned with diet and just want to get fit, you won't get fit. You shouldn't be eating candy because the calories to price ratio is high. Abs are made in the kitchen.
Exercise
The principle to gaining muscular strength is keeping the repetitions low say around 3-12. Push-ups can be done with a back pack on, with your feet elevated, or with your hand closer together. Pull-ups are excellent, focus on form and try to make that 3-12 rep range. If you can afford a $50 kettlebell I recommend getting one, I bought a cap kettlebell get a 35 lb one and learn the basics. This Youtube video is great for teaching. Also look around on the internet for calisthenics, /r/bodyweightfitness is excellent
This adjustable kettlebell is an expensive investment initially, but will save you tons in the long run. I also use small 2.5 lbs magnetic weights when necessary. I use kettlebells twice per week, and they really increase strength. Also a door frame chinup bar is very useful. Kettlebell swings and Turkish Getups are two exercises that compliment grappling very well.

Shaun T, the guy who created the Insanity workout, has a series called "Focus T25" where the workouts are only 25 minutes long. It was really the only home workout I liked to do. Really well made videos and he has one person doing the "modified" workout. They were over before you knew it. I tried the p90x videos, but Tony Horton talks too fucking much, dragging out the whole thing.
It costs literally nothing. requires no additional equipment, except an optional yoga mat. He tries to sell his special mat, but if you have carpeted floors, just use a towel. If not, you can get a yoga mat at Walmart or Academy really cheap. You can torrent the program, so you'll have all the videos and the schedule.
Another option is to get a kettlebell and do a few quick kettlebell routines. You can get one relatively cheap, but as you get better you have to increase the weight. I got a stamina vera-bell because it has adjustable weights, but they are sort of expensive. Luckily, I got it for free through a rewards program at my old job.
get a 16kg kettlebell to start with; the CAP brand linked isnt the best but its a decent & cheap starting bell. I started with the same bell, but don't really like the smooth finish on them, so once you are ready to move up in weight i would look to other brands.
Buy a copy of Pavel's Simple & Sinister book and follow the program. It is a great easy to follow program consisting of daily swings and Turkish Get Ups.
As for diet, try and eat "clean"; meals cooked mostly at home with known ingredients consisting mostly of proteins, veggies and some fat to keep you full between meals. Splurge with some potatoes or rice every now but don't over do it on the carbs.
to keep on track you could enter your workouts into a daily journal or log them into fitocracy. It is great to see your numbers improve as the weeks go on.
Edit: i forgot to mention S&S takes roughly 30minutes of your time daily, so discipline wise there is no excuse that you don't have time to squeeze in a workout

This is a decent starter kit for about $163 bucks with free shipping. Allows you to do a lot of different exercises and a lot of different routines. You'll be able to get all around fit and healthy for sure with some dedication, good routines, and a good diet.
In terms of muscle mass gains, it won't exactly get you massive. No 40 inch biceps or anything crazy. However, you can add quite a bit of muscle mass and strength with this kit and a body weight routine.
Body weight training and kettle bell training are very effective and a lot of people have had success with them. It's geared towards more functional fitness rather than purely aesthetics though. Not really what everyone would want, but it's cheap, effective, and portable.
Anytime I hear someone say they want to get fit but can't afford the gym, I direct them to that video, and the CAP brand kettlebells on Amazon. Affordable, decently-shaped and free shipping.
For 40 bucks you can get going with one 35 lb bell and that video and you'll get into tremendous condition. Plus the internet is packed with other free routines to try out. I wish FIF would release one that uses two kettlebells. My body is ready.
I got mine off of amazon. If you have prime you'll save about 20 bucks in shipping, but if you're lucky, you'll be able to find one with Super Saver Shipping and not have to pay 20 bucks to get it shipped. If you do get a kettlebell, watch some youtube videos on form. It's easy to do it incorrectly and hurt your back in the process.
Here's the kettlebell I use, and it has super saver shipping:

Edit: If you decide to buy a different brand of kettlebell, make SURE you get a cast iron one that doesn't have the handle welded on (It has to be one solid piece both the handle and the ball) if bashed against something by accident, the call could come off the handle, and obviously that's incredibly dangerous.
42 bucks but WELL worth it because you won't be paying for a gym every month, and it will take you a while to upgrade to a higher weight.
I've only ever bought Diamond Pro bells for my personal gym. You can get them from Walmart.com and Jet.com, free shipping and returns. Prices are very competitive. I'm also 99% sure that they're the exact same bells as Onnit, Cap Barbell, and Rep Fitness.
Diamond Pro, 24kg, $59 US, Jet.com
Onnit, 24kg, $85 US, Onnit.com
Cap Barbell, 24kg, $91 US, Amazon.com
Rep Fitness, 24kg, $100 US, Amazon.com
You'll find a lot of love here for Diamond Pro. Affordable, sufficient quality, and decent texture (spray on truck bed liner).
For myself, to avoid distraction, I tend to make the morning my time for grinding out programming work. When I get deep into programming work I completely avoid social media / reddit / shows / games until I put in about an hour of work. Normally about 30 minutes to an hour in, I no longer want to do anything but program, so I don't worry too much about distractions. I always have pen and paper / post-it notes on hand for writing down ideas. Whenever I hit roadblocks in programming, I try to stop coding for a bit and will workout or go take a shower(if I've not had one that day). I tend to measure work time in the amount of podcasts I've listened to.
If your looking to get in shape now that you work from home, setup a standing desk. For convenience I leave all my workout equipment next to my desk. Use whatever workout equipment you will actually use, but I recommend a couple Kettlebells and a hand trainer. I find that kettlebells tend to be great for loosening up my back and the hand trainer prevents wrist strain. I use other stuff too if your interested.
If you have any diet problems, working from home is the perfect chance to start fixing them. Working from home also allows you to fix any sleep problems you might have too; 8 hours a night, every night, will make a big difference if your the type to stay up late and get up early.
I own three of the CAP powder coated kettlebells. Link. I've had them for 2.5 years for my two oldest, one 35 lb and one 44 lb, down to 6 months for my newest one, another 44 lb.
I can't speak highly enough of them. I got them from Amazon where the prices fluctuate wildly with regularity so by watching and waiting I was able to snag them one at a time as the prices dropped. Oddly enough I actually managed to get one of the 44's for a few dollars cheaper than the 35 because of this. Free shipping with Amazon Prime and their good overall user reviews is what sold me on them.
The handles are all ground smooth. No burrs or rough spots. The powder coating has held up well and only shows wear on the bottoms since I use them on the bare concrete floor of my garage. Photos of wear. The powder coating provides for a nice grippy handle but I still use a chalk bag for a more secure hold for when my hands get sweaty.
I will absolutely buy another powder coated CAP if the price is right and I would recommend anyone like me looking for a lower cost alternative give them a shot. In my own personal experience these don't deserve the poor reputation they seem to generally have on this sub.
if he is getting into his own cooking - no better gift than a quality knife. Tojiro makes a great one for the money ($47)
Working out - 35-45 lb Kettlebells are a versatile place to start a home gym
ahh shit. just saw filler gift. dont know if either fit the bill
I am hijacking your post to ask a question that I am posetive you have answered for me in the past.
I want to start adding in kettlebell work, how heavy of a bell should I use. I read online that a 35lb would be good for the average person, a 44lb would be good for someone with some strength training experience. Would I be ok with a 44lber? Or should I go heavier/lighter?
And is there anything wrong with these kettlebells?
Never tried TRX, but all my kettlebells are Rep fitness and I've been very happy with them. The 24kg is $10 less than the TRX

I bought a 40# CAP brand kettlebell through amazon a few weeks ago and it was free shipping. I think it still applies. They're a good quality too. The price is about the same as Christian's fitness factory.

This was my first kettlebell. Don't be ashamed to start on a 25 if you're only moderately fit. It's better to get form down on a lighter weight. I have a CAP 45 lb bell as well. The CAP kettlebells are nice and cheap, but definitely not the best - if you have big hands, you may want to look into a competition style kettlebell (they will be colored and have a wider steel handle, usually).
A friend of mine got this and he likes it.
I have several CAP kettlebells and several Rogue kettlebells. My first was a 35 LB CAP. It has served me very well and is eligible for free shipping through Amazon Prime. The CAPs are smooth and shiny. I think it's a great choice to start.
The Rogues have a rougher matte finish but are not excessively rough. They are more expensive but I prefer them overall.

Amazing, in terms of the kettlebell itself, would This do the trick? Just thinking about shipping what with me being in the UK.
How long do you think before I'd start to see a difference?
So far I've just pinned a bunch of beginner exercises from Pinterest :p but may look into youtube videos if they prove to be confusing.
We don't have a lot of sporting supply stores around here so I ended up getting one from Amazon, a CAP brand which seem to be pretty prevalent in weights.
dont' buy a whole set... just one at a time... you can get great results w/ even the lightest. get a 15 lbs for month 1. 25 lbs for months 2 and 3. on 4th buy 35 lbs. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0077XYTDW/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl
then you won't be forced to spend it all at once. see... there never is a good excuse not to :)
I was searching amazon today and they had the Rep KBs that looked good and got high reviews. I also have prime so free shipping.
This guy puts them just below Kettlebell Kings but above Rogue and here is the amazon link the pricing looks decent.
the 16kg/35lb cap kettlebells are very good, i suggest starting with one bell
that was my first kettlebell (then i bought a second one), i've had it for two years and i used it mostly for my hiit workouts
smooth handle, easy to grip espcially if you're new
Also whilst I have you here, any views on this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bodymax-16kg-Kettlebell-Cast-Iron/dp/B000RGPAHA/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=2PDPOIT0KAZIS&coliid=I8SNHXS6E1NOZ
Non competition regular cast. Good reviews.
>I don't want to join a gym or invest in any new equipment, at least yet, for financial and time reasons.
Can you invest between $100 to $200 ?
If yes, buy Adjustable Kettlebells:
Option A
Option B
And follow this program:The 10,000 Swing Kettlebell Workout
25 cast-iron kettlebells is definitely BIFL.
I like sandbags, but you can't really do some of the one handed exercises that I like doing unless the weight is cut down. Otherwise it's too unwieldy. I might have to get a few though.
Also, Kettlestack
It's kinda like a kettlebell only adjustable because you can add plate weights.

After I finish a piece and iron it I place it between two cutting boards from IKEA and put a kettlebell on top of it. After 20 minutes or so I peel the tape off and it comes out as flat as can be!
The images make them look the same as the CAP ones on amazon. They also seem a little bit cheaper on amazon after factoring in shipping, although not quite the same selection.

I wouldn't get too caught up in what kettlebells to buy. Just buy some off of amazon and start working out. I bought the kettlebells that I linked and have had no problems so far.
