I love light shows when I'm tripping. I've gotten a bit of a collection over the years, and if I'm making an event of it, I'll break them all out and turn my whole house into a variety of trippy experiences as you wander from room to room. Except my roommate's bedroom. Because it doesn't need it. Dude spent a week painting it with a sponge, so his walls are kind of like this one. No lights required (thought it works better with the softer bedside lamp than the bright overhead... blacklight was only okay). But the rest of the house becomes a glowy, lasery, blinky mess. And I love every bit of it.

One of my favorite things is to get one of those laser light shows and shine it up into a leafy tree in my back yard. It lights the whole thing up with moving lasers and is super fun to look at. I also saw this done effectively with bushes over Christmas, as those types of lights were very popular around here rather than putting up string lights.

Another favorite of mine is combining black lights, paper + black light paint + tape, and a ceiling fan with light sockets. Paint something, attach the paper to the fan (works best if the paper isn't bigger than the blades), replace the normal bulbs with black light bulbs (get the fluorescent bulbs, like these, incandescent black light bulbs are terrible and barely work), turn it all on and lay down underneath it (bean bag chairs or just a pillow make this much nicer). It opens a portal to another dimension, I swear. [Edit: Word of warning, make sure to let the paint dry, or you'll find little dots of blacklight paint everywhere the next day. I speak from experience.]

I recently discovered the Nanoleaf Aurora, which looks like it could be really neat. Don't have it myself yet, but I think it looks cool as hell. Especially since their upgraded version coming later this year will apparently make them sound reactive. Linky.

They are kind of hard to come by any more, but there's a gadget called a Laserpod. My grandpa gave one to me back in college. No idea why my super conservative grandpa gave me trippy lights for my birthday that year, but he also gave me one of those handblown plasma light things too (one of these) and this glowing humidifier/vaporizer/fountain thing. Those are pretty awesome, but the Laserpod is one of the greatest things ever. I think the company may be out of business because most retail places I see a listing for it are out of stock and their website doesn't exist any more, but you might get lucky on eBay or something. If you can find one, I highly recommend it. Example link. [Edit: Also, if you find one, please let me know where! Mine is partially broken (the blue field doesn't work any more after many years of use), and there's bigger better versions than the one I've got, so I'd love to get another.]

I've also had good times with a disco light I've got. I forget where I got it from (probably Spencers) but it's not a basic disco ball. It's a flat disc about an inch thick and 4 or 5 inches across, covered with LED's, and has a mounting bracket to attach it to the wall or ceiling (using screws, so it's somewhat permanent). It then shines RGB light on the wall/ceiling in a rotating pattern or reactive to sound. If you have particularly interesting things to look at, it can be pretty incredible. I hooked it up in my garage (which is finished and I set up a smoking lounge in there) and a random Tide detergent box sitting by the laundry area had me captivated. So anything with some interesting shapes and colors that look a little different depending on what color might be shining on it can be amazing. Mine's different, but it's something like this.

I've also had good luck with the various stuff you can find at Spencers and party supply stores. Be wary of foggers. They are awesome, but I got a 1000W one and it puts out WAY more fog than I was expecting. It looked like my house was in a thick cloud. I had to turn it off due to paranoia about attracting attention because of all the fog coming out of the windows (worried somebody might think my house was on fire and call authorities, as opposed to the laser in the tree thing which is clearly a decoration/party light). That being said, a little fog makes a great addition to light shows, lasers or otherwise. And if you get a fogger like mine, I've seen ways to mod it so that it produces fog that lays on the ground instead of all over. It's something I want to try. I think if it falls in a sheet and you combine it with stairs or a landing and some lasers that could be really neat.

A bit off topic, but if you are day tripping, a bubble machine is pretty amazing too. I actually had to put it away because my buddy was working himself into an over agitated state because he was so fucking in to the bubbles. [Edit: oh, and while they suck horribly to do what they claim, glow in the dark bubbles (these), have an added substance that makes the bubbles even cooler in daylight. Works best during the "magic hour", but any time of day is still pretty cool.]

Anyway, those are some of the cooler things I have set up to turn my home into an alien landscape to explore. :) Good luck doing the same to yours!

Good Morning Beautiful Bombshells!!!!

Wow! This thread has blown up! It was the first thing I saw when I logged into Reddit today. I actually do need to work today to get my assignment for this week finished; however wanted to pop in and I'll read throughout the day too :)

Dinner last night was awesome! DH brined the thick pork loin chops in pickle juice (that was a first and it was so damned good!) for about 2 hours and then sprinkled on some Penzeys Pork Chop Seasoning before grilling to perfection. The pickle juice flavor was subtle but they were oh so juicy. We wound up sharing because the chops were so big. I tossed some brussels sprouts with olive oil, pink himalayan salt & pepper, and bacon ends & pieces then roasted in the convection oven until perfectly done. Drool... For dessert, we adored the Lemon SmartCakes (where have you been all my life?) with a little dollop of whipped cream and a bite of Lily's Chocolate. We enjoyed way too much wine and great conversation. We didn't turn on the tv once during the night. It was as close to a perfect evening as could be. One of the best things? We have leftovers for tonight!

DH got me a Tiffany style lamp that I've been wanting for the longest time and a large Bento Bag for my knitting that I've been eyeing from Fringe Supply. I gave him a list of things at Christmas time to select from and so he pulled from that list. Smart man! He loved all his grill stuff and immediately put the light on the grill. He said it was freaking awesome and helped so much :)

After all that, I was down another pound on the scale this morning. However, it's not weigh in day. Fingers crossed that it sticks :) I hope everyone has a fantastic start to their weekend and KCKO!

We got this bed frame and it's been great. It fits pretty good size plastic bins underneath so we have tons of storage.

We have a memory foam mattress we bought off Amazon for $150 that's also awesome. I can't tell the difference compared to my mom's 900 dollar mattress. Don't spend too much on a bed!

We got this rug and it's just okay. It's not soft and I can kinda tell it was cheap. It works and the color is nice. But we have an Ikea vindum rug in our living room that is a million times more cozy. If you're going to buy Ikea stuff, sign up for their account. It's free and gives you great coupons and discounts. The 8x10 vindum is like $160 right now (before a coupon) and it's definitely worth the extra money.

Another note, if you want bookshelves to actually hold books, the Ikea ones are generally the best value I've seen, even if you have to pay shipping. If you're planning to pay shipping at Ikea I think it caps out, so you might as well buy a lot.

Edited to add that this lamp has served us well. The gray is a really nice color when using a warm lightbulb. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075Z643G4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_uQ40Db620CX0C

u/Rikuz7 · 1 pointr/Hue

I think a ceiling fixture with partially empty sockets looks, well, unfinished. Better to have all or nothing. Bear in mind that with a ceiling fan, for Hue to work, the lighting on it has to be separately controllable from the fan; Hues require power to be left on even when the lights are commanded to be off, otherwise you won't be able to command them back on wirelessly. The question of how much light is enough light or too much light can not be answered merely by counting the lights, because the true requirements are dictated by multiple factors, one of them being the room dimensions.

With evening routines, you want the ambient lighting – the general lighting in the space – to be involved. That way you'll be affected wherever you happen to hang out in the room. But for a good wake up, I really recommend having a separate bedside lamp. Normally I would strongly object to placing glowing lighting fixtures directly on eye level as it can be uncomfortable and distracting, but this is one of the rare scenarios where it'll actually help you to wake up better if the lamp is on a bedside table where it gets to be about on the same level as your head on the pillow. You will sense the light even if your eyes are closed, and this is what makes waking up so much easier; You'll be subconsciously getting ready to wake up before you are conscious enough to realize it yourself and become aware of the light. Also, I have a lot of reasons not to use table lamps that turn the entire fixture or its shade into a glowing object. However, again, this is one of the rare scenarios where it actually does work; So I recommend the lamp to be something with a white diffuser shade so the whole object glows. The important thing to remember is that Hue bulbs should not be placed into closed fixtures because they require proper air flow in order to remain safe and functional for the life span that they're promised to have.

Good shapes include these (as type examples, not buying recommendations): a simple white fabric drum, milk glass diffuser with open top, milk glass diffuser with an open bottom.

• No fixture – ceiling or plug-in – should have a built-in dimmer function on it.

• No shade should enclose the bulb entirely as to prevent air flow.

• The best diffusers are pure white (not cream), smooth (not rough if fabric), and relatively thin (not thick such as tiffany glass)

I want this lamp because my room is dark and I love crystals. Honestly though, I'd be grateful for any of the crystal items off my wishlists. they're beautiful and give off such great energy. I know I sound like a hippy right now. lol

Happy happy birthday to youuu!

Hang your Fleur on the brick. Either drill and put in a screw or get some brick clips.

I'd borrow a hammer drill and get a permanent screw mounted dead center above the mantle. Even if you move, someone will always use it to hang something.

Other than that, lets start with the basics.

  1. the curtain rod needs to be replaced. You want something strong and sturdy over wide windows. Check out the Amazon basics 1" rod. Im also a fan of the pipe style curtain rods. I have these in my house

  2. Remove the mini blinds from the door and go with 2" faux wood to match the other window. French door blinds like these come with mounts so the very bottom rung attached to the door, making it so they don't flap around when you use the door. Since you have a pupper, You might want to consider using those mounts up higher and leaving some open window space at the bottom for little eyeballs to see outside. It will keep them from tearing up the blinds.

As for the curtain panels for the other window, maybe something like this that matches the carpet style. Since you have window blinds already, you don't really need full on blackout curtains..so some nice semi sheer curtains would look nice. Just push them off to the sides of the window to create the look of curtains...or open the blinds and close them to have privacy but let in light

  3. Get some table lamps for your end tables. And do yourself a favor and get plug in slide dimmers and use dimming LED bulbs or incandescent. I prefer incandescent in my den lamps because they dim really softly and its really homey feeling. Simple table lamps

  4. Paint. I feel like something in a sage green would go nicely in this space.

And if you white wash the brick and stain the mantle a nice dark walnut color...I think the sage green would go nicely.

  5. Lastly, at some point, change out the ceiling fan to something in bronze. [Maybe something like this]
(https://www.homedepot.com/p/Home-Decorators-Collection-Copley-52-in-Indoor-Outdoor-Oil-Rubbed-Bronze-Ceiling-Fan-51504/206648583) Brass dates a house so any time you can get rid of it, you should.

$10 and under - I want to suggest this Mango Chai Latte but I can't find anything like it on Amazon.com. It still remains my choice as it sounds awesome.

$10~20 - As you like Pokemon and there are a few Eeveelutions, this Vaporeon is absolutely adorable.

Over $20, I second Varasque's Flareon as that's been on my wish list for a good while. But to be different I also suggest both a Harvest Moon game as they rock, and this beautiful Crane table lamp

u/annaleiia · 2 pointsr/Wishlist

I got my brother this for his birthday and he loves it.

This is really cool, since it folds up to the size of a wallet.

And finally, I have heard nothing but good things about Stumptown coffee!

Good luck, I hope you find something awesome!

Ok, I don't have as many as I thought, but here are a few! I did mod podge letters to spell his name. Here's the changing table - my husband I refinished/painted it and I painted the knobs. And here is my pride and joy, the dresser. This thing took forever! You can't really tell, but the lamp on top is Peter Rabbit, too. It was my husband's as a child. He has a set of Beatrix Potter books from his childhood, kinda like this, that are on display. We also have this cute lamp from Amazon. It's much cuter in person! We use it every night to read. We never got many things up on the wall. I wanted to put up shelves with little Beatrix Potter collectibles, but it's a small room and we didn't want a shelf above the crib or changing table.

u/Tjdamage · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Here is a coffee table to put in the middle of the sofas, it's black and modern and not too pricey. The UK delivery is free, too!

This rug rug would go well to compliment the orange and match the coffee table.

These wall shelves would be a nice touch for one of the recesses beside the TV.

Claude Monet canvas.

Van Gogh canvas print, much more colour contract in this one, it will stand out more than the Monet. This would go nice in the other recessed area.

Cushions that may look nice on your sofas.

A corner shelf for the corner between the sofas. It's also the same style as the coffee table.

Lamp 1, 2, and 3. Number 3 comes in a bunch of colours, I think red and purple look nicest and will throw some more colour into the room. But black or cream might go better with the sofas if you choose to put it on the shelf and between the orange sofas.

I hope you can end up making a house a home.

Thanks I agree with your ideas.

I guess in terms of styles, my taste tends to gravitate towards two things:

  • Geometric and abstract patterns, bold and dark patterns. Like navy blue/white chevrons. I also like dark reds and oranges.
  • Earth tones and natural shapes, like browns and greens with branches, animals, birds, etc.

I found this lamp on Amazon that is the sort of thing I would enjoy: http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B0014FUXC0/

I'm planning on hanging up a print I took of my dog as well: http://i.imgur.com/tJ8ae7p.jpg

Anyone with any ideas with that info in mind would be much appreciated ;)

What is on the wall on the back? With the shelving unit?

Without knowing that, here’s my recommendation based off of what you’ve said.

couch minimalist with a pop of color. Converts to futon, for those days you want to watch the rain hit the window and lay down.

other couch these couches are cheap, but will get the job done. If you aren’t watching TV in here like you said, I can’t imagine needing high quality couches to nap and lounge on all day.

$300 landed (we will say).

chalkboard/corkboard for your mini office space and to get the post its off the wall.

or build your own at IKEA pegboard shelf combo.

So let’s say $335.

clearly a conversation piece to the right against the wall with the wires to hide all of them (I’m kidding this is so expensive)

but a cabinet like this may be better it will hide all of those wires, you’ll have cabinets to put work and school stuff too.

or like this I cant really tell what color your other pieces of furniture are.

Essentially though hide those wires with a buffet table. Use the buffet table as a cabinet for paperwork etc.

Then decorate the top of it with bar stuff (if you drink). That’s simple enough. Some nice glasses, bottles, decanter, etc.geometric shapes would look nice

Decorate with clear large containers on the bar area glass jars are inexpensive at Marshall’s or target

Lots you can do with it. Ask your gf what she likes. I personally get dried weird curly straw things or dried eucalyptus for mine. Put on Buffett table.

Let’s say $150 for decorations.so
$485

an end table or two other option

$585

lamp

Or thislight ball

^ i personally like it but who knows

$700

Then wall art by a local artist that you can find around the city. One that matches the color couch you pick. I’d personally do a mustard yellow or dark green. Once again, preference.

If you don’t want the end table. Get a coffee table.
glass
not glass, you can probably find cheaper elsewhere

Let’s say you don’t get the end tables but you get a coffee table. Let’s put that around $850-$900

a chair would be nice doesn’t have to be anything crazy

$1,100

Then blankets and throw pillows. local art.

And I personally believe in storage ottomans or furniture or something of the sort. Just for random shit you can toss in there when picking up.

I like your carpet. Keep that.

Goodluck.

Most of the items we have in our nursery are thrifted and we are doing cloth diapering so that we can have a lower environmental impact with our baby.

Top 5:

Changing pad sheets. These covers are super soft and I was a big fan of the pattern! We also got different sizes of these for our bassinet and pack and play sheets. https://www.amazon.com/Stretchy-Changing-Covers-BROLEX-Jersey-Balloons/dp/B07B488QB9/ref=asc_df_B07B488QB9/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=241960278479&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13514455347440179493&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9003680&hvtargid=aud-801381245258%3Apla-452765505018&psc=1&th=1

Charcoal grey storage ottoman: we are keeping all of our extra linens and assorted items of that nature in here and it is strong enough to sit on! https://www.amazon.com/Seville-Classics-Foldable-Storage-Charcoal/dp/B00ROR7SYS

For the dresser/changing table we took an old wooden dresser and spruced it up with a coat of grey mineral paint and new hardware. Here is the knobs we picked: https://www.amazon.com/Artncraft-Painted-Ceramic-Cabinet-Drawer/dp/B01MFI13R0

You can’t have an ocean theme without some ocean themed decals for the wall! Most of the decor came from discount shops but we purchased these wall stickers from Amazon to add some more color. treepenguin Ocean Wall Decals for Kids Rooms - Under The Sea Fish Wall Decor - Bathroom Wall Stickers - Bedroom Bathtub Shower Sea Animal Decorations https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DWHDDVN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_SOvRzRK9ms9ir

Finally for our seaside themed lamp and side table we have an old side table that we inherited from family. We put some netting down and added seashells that we thrifted as well as a lamp with sand and little shells inside! This will be our nursing and reading station for the foreseeable future with the glider armchair purchased off Facebook marketplace from another mom. Here’s the link for the fillable lamp: CO-Z Fillable Table Lamp with... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SS6NXBV?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Overall I was happy with how everything came out. Our house is over 200 years old so we had to work with a small room with a strange shape and a small budget. I am being induced Wednesday night so finished just in time! I hope you enjoyed!

I have a few ideas for you.

  1. In such a small space, I would use floating shelves instead of bedside tables. A wooden shelf with medium/dark stain + 2 dark colored brackets per shelf would only cost around $25-$35 at Home Depot or Lowe’s.

  2. The lamps look too wide for the space, and they make the small tables look even smaller. Trade them in for something skinny and sleek, like this pair for $50.99 from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/HAITRAL-Modern-Bedroom-Living-Office/dp/B076JBWQKB/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=black+table+lamp&qid=1562045693&refinements=p_72%3A2661618011&rnid=2661617011&s=gateway&sr=8-7

There are cheaper pairs of lamps on Amazon, but they’re also shorter which would look weird in this space.

  3. The curtains. Long curtains in a small room can be tricky. Especially since your ceiling seems to vault the other direction. Maybe replace the curtains with a neutral/cream colored Roman Shade instead.

  4. Add color with decor and pillows. The green wreath will add a needed splash of color to the wall. I would also add a small vase with an artificial plant to each side table (if you get smaller lamps). Next, opt for a neutral colored comforter or large quilt, and add 4-5 colorful decorative pillows. I love the light grey quilt I have in my guest room. It adds a good amount of texture and coziness to the space, while also matching whatever new pillows I bring home.

    Hope this helps!

I'm honestly kind of surprised at the amount of Western-themed stuff there is out there. Nightlights, decals for your toilet, candle holders, little light-up wagons...It's crazy.

It doesn't really fit into your criteria up there, but I'd suggest checking out the podcast Thrilling Adventure Hour, specifically the "Sparks Nevada, Marshal on Mars" segments. It's basically an old fashioned radio western that takes place in the future on Mars, and it's hilarious!

I've got a $5 and under list you can pick from if I happen to win. Thanks for the contest, and Don't call me Mad Dog.

These awesome lamps are the oldest thing on my wishlist. They are well over $15 but this would also be lovely! Ancient

I purchased this light in grad school. Now it's in my living room and it gets a lot of compliments. They make a floor-lamp version as well.

You must get a ton of email ;-). For me, it’s almost reassuring. Sometimes it is important, and I should check.

I use one of these globes as my Hue light;
