My dentist told me to buy a mouthguard online because they're just as effective as custom made ones. There are two types I have experience with, the melty kind and the minimalist kind.

The melty kind you feel more but it's formed to your body so it's not that intrusive, the minimalist kind fits in your mouth better but doesn't conform and I find myself chewing on them more, also some of the reviews say that they woke up to almost swallowing them (I've never had this happen), so decide which one will be best for you. I prefer the minimal ones.

Take hot baths and lay flat, I usually cross my legs or rest my feet on the end of the tub so that my back is flat on the bottom, the heat will help hour muscles relax. I also have a jade facial roller or (slow but much cheaper
) which works especially well when it's been warmed up, I have better luck using that for my facial/jaw massages than just my hands.

I also grind my teeth and I purchased these. They work great and you get 5 for $15.

They're comfortable and I seem to sleep better when wearing it. I have been using the first one I made for almost a year and it is holding up fine. So I anticipate getting at least 5 years worth for $15. Not bad.

I feel incredibly strong about buying from this company. Their reviews have been stellar and your kit comes with several papers with thorough explanations on how to make sure it fits correctly. You can even correspond with them and send them your formed mouth guard if you need it filed down or trimmed. The best customer service ive ever had via Amazon, let alone on mouth guards, hands down.

I do that a lot. So much in fact, my jaw is out of alignment because I ground my teeth to almost nothing... My molars are flat. Anyhow, you can buy cheap mouthguards from Amazon, they work pretty well. I think I got one for $10, you just have to boil it and fit it. It will be a bit thicker than the one the dentist will try to sell you, but it's easy enough to adjust too and works well.

Huh, maybe it was the brand? Mine was very thick and sturdy, and I followed the instructions quite closely. I don't think mine is sticky at all. They do feel weird in your mouth...but they all do. :P I used a smaller size (my package had four mouthguards in two sizes) and it fit best. Did take a couple hours to get used to it, so I put it in a while before bed to get used to it.

Edit: also if you haven't been tested for it, ask about sleep apnea. Apparently 1 in 4 people with sleep apnea grind their teeth (I believe, maybe it's backwards and 1 in 4 people who grind their teeth have sleep apnea) so it's worth checking it out.

I don't have sleep apnea, I've been tested 3 times. I unfortunately just have health issues that cause the muscles all over my body to spasm all night. Sigh.

you should be able to get custom fit for one by your dentist, but honestly i bought a $15 set on amazon that you boil and fit to your teeth yourself and i love it. i also have a bad gag reflex but this guard doesn’t bother me.

Do these exercise 6 times a day until you start feeling better. Literally start to finish even tho they seem dorky. It will loosen that muscle which has tightened due to clenching. This started for me about 3 months ago. Now I do the exercises once a day but on days I take adderall/etc I do it more than once because I can feel my jaw clench. Also get some magnesium to start taking regularly. It will keep you from clenching too much. Rub the muscle that runs along your jaw regularly and be conscious not to let your teeth touch through out the day. Also get a night mouth guard. I got this pack and used the thick one and it works well.

Hey man, just to follow up on this. I wound up making a mouth guard for night wear and it has helped a LOT. Almost zero jaw pain, no clicking/etc now. It took about two weeks of wear to get to this point.

In my case, my dentist found that my bite caused my jaw to pull a mm or two out of alignment when I clenched my teeth. If I did it a lot at night, I would invariable wake up with a sore, strained jaw. The trick for fixing that was to create a mouth guard with a smooth top so that my upper and lower teeth could not lock into place.

When I was molding it, I used a plastic credit card to put on top of it as I bit down so that biting down wouldn't put a tooth impression on the top of it. This helped create a smooth top to the lower guard while it was fitted to my mouth.

$16 and it works perfectly vs. $800 that my dentist wanted to make me one.

You can get one of these for pretty cheap. They're not going to last as long as one from a dental office, and won't fit quite as tight but it works the exact same way.

Why hello, I'm also the tooth-grindy half of a gay couple. My girlfriend used to stick her fingers in my mouth when she heard me doing it because it sounded so painful. I ended up using this to make a night guard on a dentist's recommendation after I ground so hard I ended up damaging my nerves and getting a root canal. It's not a very cute nighttime look but at least it protects my teeth and my girlfriend's fingers now.

Get a night guard and wear it. You can buy them at the drug store or get one specially fitted by your dentist (considerably more expensive than off the rack, but more comfy).

Worth noting that you can get a mouth guard online for relatively cheap.

The kind I got a while back had a tiny handle on it so you can put it in boiling water to soften it, then bite down on it so it molds to your teeth shape, and then you cut off the tiny handle. Came with a case and everything.

I don’t think that’s necessary, I got some that mold to the shape of my teeth. There’s no pressure pushing them out of place, so I don’t see any issue. My dentist didn’t have any objections either.

I bought these mouth guards and didn't have a problem molding any of them using the box instructions. I've also spent $400 twice on "specialty" mouth guards from my dentist and I've seen no real difference in my TMJ pain between them and the $20 ones.

With all that said mouth guards in general can be sort of hit or miss when it comes to TMJ pain. You should find out what's causing the pain first. If it's clenching then try molding a guard that prevents you from being able to clench. If it's overuse, soft food and warm massaging with ibuprofen is a good cheap start. I don't think medicaid or any kind of insurance covers TMJ stuff as I found out myself unfortunately :(
