So it is an odd way to do it, at least I think, but this is the style of brush

Beard Brush & Comb Set for Men Care - Gift Box & Friendly Bag - Best Bamboo Grooming Kit for Home & Travel - Great for Dry or Wet Beards - Distributes Balm for Growth & Styling - Adds Shine & Softness https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019FYL7L2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_JbdbBbHJ35EXN

And this is the wax make sure to get the 2oz so the can is a little wider than the brush

Wild Willie's All Natural Mustache and Beard Grooming Wax For Men - The Only Hard Wax with 7 Organic Ingredients for All Day Strong Hold While Treating Your Mustache at the Same Time. 2 oz. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018USVCLY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_EddbBb551YWH3

Why mustache wax? - it is much firmer and it stays in the beard longer for all day styling.

NOTE - I have a pretty long beard and have never once experienced the heat itch or summer itch people warn you about. I feel this is due to washing the beard daily with shampoo, conditioning with coconut oil hair conditioner at least 3 days a week, and using this brush and wax mix.

How to - hold the brush in one hand and the wax in the other. Place the wax onto the brush and twist back and forth on the brush making a thin layer.
Starting at the top of your beard brush up until you look like Doctor Robotnik from Sonic the hedgehog.

Again starting at the top brush the top of the beard down into the bottom of the beard but pulling out from the face to get a good length / shape.

Use a separate small brush to then shape your mustache onto the beard for a bit of separation and heavy wax in the mustache. This helps prevent the eating problem a lot of new comers see.

Just what I do, not an expert j

I am a bit amatur as well but got some good advice from others. I have had a rough time getting some of my beard curls on one side of my face to stay down. I have had the best luck using beard oil and combing it a couple to 3 times a day real quick to tame it.
I know your pain on a good barber close by. I had to drive an hour to get mine trimmed. Not a big deal I just make an afternoon out of it. Just make sure you go somewhere they know what they are doing and they can help you out quite a bit since they will actually see you in person and hopefully suggest things specifically for you.

Here is my bit of advice and what I use.

First get a couple good combs, some beard oil and possibly some wax for your moustache.

This is what I have:

I use Kent Combs:

Honest Amish beard oil:

Firehouse Moustache Wax Dark. I have a dark beard so I use the dark wax. Its really tacky, and when I make my curls they stay well, but if you dont plan on handlebars then I might use something else that isnt so tacky:

From an equipment perspective, people LOVE Kent combs in this sector, but I got this comb a week ago and love it so far.

Fine tooth ox horn comb: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QYDC3S1/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_t0V0CbWSDYDB8

Was using the double sided comb from this kit for the first few months and it’s been moved to my gym/work bag (and will be used for travel too).

Trina and shape ups I have my barber do.

As for oils and balms, Heroes and Legends has nothing but great products. A Midsummers Night during the day and Mr Sandman at night are incredible and my current go to’s. When I want to switch it up for something more fruity or sweet I have Parrot from Chesapeake Beard Co which is super strong in bottle but perfect in beard.

I'm a dedicated womb-groomer!!!

Mrs. CRB and I make an event of it, every few weeks. We take the nice, long, hot shower together. Then I spread out a towel on the bed, for her to lie down on. She can kick back and relax and read a book if she likes. I break out a beard trimmer, precision trimmer, razor, shave mug for hot water, Coochy Cupcake shaving cream, a towel or two, and my awesome new boar bristle brush. I take my time, slowly grooming her to perfection, gently working up her arousal as I go. The hair style is my choice.

The brush does a great job of softening the hair. The razor takes care of the bikini line and shapes the hair style. Coochy is just the best shave cream in the whole wide world. It never leaves a bump. The groomer gets her pubes to that perfect length. By the time she's all groomed and spiffy, she's dripping wet.

The act of grooming is wonderfully relaxing and erotic for the both of us. It's another one of those great ways of creating intimacy between us. And now, thanks to the Coochy shave cream, every time I smell birthday cake, I get a hardon.

My favorite hair style is the NSFW caterpillar. Closely cropped to the outer labia. Not too short, but not long enough to leave me choking on hairs when I eat pussy. Full and lush growth.

I daily carry a GORUCK GR1. I chose this pack because of how ridiculously overbuilt it is. Prior to getting the GR1, I carried less and I generally still couldn't go more than 6 months at best without ripping or destroying my packs. I also like that it doesn't have much built in organization. I prefer to create my own organizational system rather than use the one mandated by the pack. This is the primary reason I chose this over similar high quality options such as the Tom Bihn Synapse 25.

Also, I know there is a serious lack of cool hacking tools. Unfortunately I am currently in a more defensive than offensive cybersecurity position, so I don't really carry a lot of stuff around with me like I used to when I was red team.

On the front you can see that I have a Grimloc biner in case I need to attach anything to my pack. I also have a Gonex water bottle pouch and a large water bottle. On the back of the pack I have a pouch with my EDC Zebralight on the shoulder strap for easy access while wearing the ruck.

I have a full beard for years I use

Khiel’s beard oil

Smells good and takes care of your beard and skin beneath the beard.

Khiel’s shampoo and conditioner

Shampoo/conditioner I use for my beard and hair. I was my beard daily cause of hygiene

[Brush and comb set](Beard Brush & Comb Set for Men Care - Gift Box & Friendly Bag - Best Bamboo Grooming Kit for Home & Travel - Great for Dry or Wet Beards - Distributes Balm for Growth & Styling - Adds Shine & Softness https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019FYL7L2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_t7UIBbZ2VQMJ1)

Best one available in my opinion

Khiels stuff can be pricey but well worth it. You have to move on from Gillette/Axe/Nivea at some point lol

I just bought a pack with 4 oz bottles of Almond oil, Avocado oil and Jojoba oil I also bought a 4 oz of grapeseed oil and mixed them all in a little 1 oz bottle with a dropper (You can buy 6 of them for $5 on ebay). I also bought some Cedar and Pine fragrance oil to add to it for smell that is also Phthalate free vegan and cruelty free just added bonuses it was only $3 for 10ml and smells awesome. Ill link em below if you wanna check it out. I just applied it to my beard this morning and to my head hair and it smells great and feels great.

To be honest it just looks short. Nothing wrong with that but on some guys it makes it look thin when it’s really not. Some areas might stay patchy no matter how long you wait but the rest will be thick. The typical advice I give is let it grow for 2-3 months then cut/shave off the parts you don’t like and keep the rest. Have a barber do it the first few times. My beard has saved my beard several times.

As far as maintenance goes here’s my routine.

I rinse my beard everyday with hot water till I feel it relax. 1-2 days a week I use a beard shampoo and rinse it out almost immediately. Most days I then use a beard conditioner (use as often as you feel it’s necessary). While that’s doing its thing I wash the rest of me. Again rinse with hot water. I towel dry my beard. Next I apply beard oil. When my beard got longer I started adding a beard balm.

Short beards benefit from a boars hair brush . Once it gets longer a wood comb it great.

u/irregularheartbeat · 3 pointsr/malegrooming

A good boar's hair brush and some oils will help shape your beard at this stage, and it will keep your beard soft, and smelling great. You've got a great beard for 6 weeks in man, so keep it up!

For oils I recommend browsing Amazon or ask a local barber if they have any oils. My favourite oil right now is this guy.

Also, be sure to check out /r/beards for additional information!

Check out Outlaw Beard Products. Based out of Turner Valley Alberta. Very quick shipping and reasonable rates. The black one is a bit of a 'pepper' scent. The beige one is a kind of 'chocolate' scent. Not bad, but different than what I'm used to... I'd like to try the red one.
It's nice because shipping isn't over the top and it's in CDN dollars.

Mammoth is also amazing. The Devils Reserve is the best oil I've ever used, hands down.

Waiting on the dollar correction so I can get back to Honest Amish without breaking the bank.

Edit - I'm a dummy. You're looking for a brush... not oils/balms. I've purchased mine through Amazon.ca. This is a goodie

u/wonkinakilt · 1 pointr/beards

Not really what you asked for, but if you genuinely don't hate the beard and just wish it were less unkempt, I second Mabe's advice of getting him some beard care stuff. I'm a big fan of Honest Amish's conditioner - softens a bit and makes it a bit more manageable. Also, this comb is fantastic.

u/Used_Taco · 2 pointsr/beards

I like this salve.

I make my own beard oil. It was like $30 to buy all the ingredients initially, but the expensive oils last forever. It works pretty good for beardruff.
1oz apricot kernal oil
1 oz jojoba oil
5 drops castor oil
5 drops cedar wood oil
5 drops tea tree oil

I have this comb for when I'm away from the house and this one for home.
I also use this brush for styling it.

Not all of that is necessary but I'd recommend a comb and beard oil at least.

u/szrdev · 2 pointsr/beards

I'm about 2 months in as well and have been having some great success with...

u/Treypyro · 2 pointsr/beards

I personally use this beard comb and brush and Honest Amish Beard Oil. I really like the way Honest Amish products smell.

When I first started growing my beard I watched the Beard Baron on YouTube. He's got some great videos on how to take care of your beard.

I got this trimmer and it works quite great. Apparently hey have a new version coming out so maybe wait until that releases.

You never know unless you try. You need to start stimulating your hair follicles to promote growth by applying oil and brushing gently. Every morning and every night: Wet you’re beard with warm, NOT HOT, water, pat dry until your face is slightly damp and Start using 3-4 drops of beard oil. Rub it into your hands and then gently massage the product into your beard. After the oil has been properly massaged into your skin and beard, lightly brush your beard downward with a boars hair beard brush (you can save the comb for when it’s longer) to stimulate your hair follicles and evenly apply the product. The amount of oil you use and the tools you use for your beard will change as it gets longer but these steps should be enough until your beard length reaches like 0.5 inches in length.

u/littlehuman7 · 17 pointsr/casualiama

If it makes you feel better, no one ever taught me about beard growth or how suits should fit or stuff like that. I've just figured it all out for myself in the past few years. Get yourself some beard balm/oil like this or this, and also a boars hair brush like this. Use the balm/oil while it's still just slightly damp after the shower, followed by a brushing after. Your beard will soon be a thing of manly silkiness. Here's style and trimming maintenance.

u/CasualSuperHero90 · 2 pointsr/beards

Ok I was in the same situation. Work doesn't care about the beard, but I want to maintain a professional approach to work. So I heeded the advice of /r/beards awhile ago. Here's what I'll recommend:

Step 1 : Oil and/or Leave in conditioner

My current favorite http://www.amazon.com/DUCKBUTTER-Duck-Butter-Beard-Oil/dp/B00YZ5UWSQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449214132&sr=8-1&keywords=beard+oil+pack

http://www.amazon.com/Honest-Amish-Beard-Balm-Conditioner/dp/B009NNFB0O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449214332&sr=8-1&keywords=beard+leave+in+conditioner

On the days I shampoo and condition my beard I dont use the leave in. Other days I use the leave in. Oil everyday.

Step 2: Brush

http://www.amazon.com/Zeus-Bristle-Pocket-Beard-Brush/dp/B00LV31TVY/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1449214502&sr=8-7&keywords=boars++hair+brush

Pick up a boars hair brush and get the product from step 1 deep in there.

Step 3: Paste

Current personal favorite:
http://www.amazon.com/Garnier-Fructis-Style-Clean-Finishing/dp/B0050N4DLO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449214605&sr=8-1&keywords=garnier+paste

This process leaves my beard straight and soft. I still have to deal with the odd hair sticking out, but it looks more professional.

u/do_i_even_lift · 2 pointsr/AskMen

I actually rotate between several right now, based upon need/preference. Jack Black's Double Duty (Amazon has it too) is some wonderful stuff, and has an SPF of 20; I got it in the traveler gift set (which I recommend), so I use it in my dopp on trips. I frequent my Kiehl's Facial Fuel (gift set option) has a bit of caffeine in it, so it perks my face right up. Both are lightly scented, as is the Burt's Bees Aftershave Lotion I use (post shave, of course). I will even opt for just Vitamin E oil, on some days too (you can grab this stuff at a grocery store or local pharmacy, and it's good for hair too).

u/HeartRobotic · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

I've been super happy with my brush from zerian. Inexpensive, good quality bristles, and it hasn't shed after a couple years of regular use.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BP0Y2EI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_VBo0AbVT1BW8T

u/DontCallMeShirlyy · 1 pointr/Moustache

I bought a couple Kent moustache combs on Amazon. I lost the first one, so bought two the second time. If you buy clubman wax (also found on amazon), it comes with a little cheap comb.

On a side note, if you do buy the kent combs on amazon, I'd consider also buying a hair comb or two, as you may be able to get free shipping and the combs are great. I don't work for kent, by the way. ha

u/Hombre_Sin_Nombre · 2 pointsr/Moustache

If you go this route, I'll give you a little advice on applying the wax. It is a very firm/stiff wax, which can be somewhat problematic in getting some out of the tin and spread over the whiskers. I find warming it a bit with a hair dryer before scraping my thumbnail across it really helps. Then I work it between my fingers and apply it by pinching/pulling it from the top of the stache down to the tips. I also highly recommend a good moustache comb, like a Kent 81T.

u/Phant0m_1 · 2 pointsr/malegrooming

Combing your beard will help with the maintenance and make your beard look maintained, and it will also train your hairs to grow in the direction you want it. Not only that but it’s also great for dispersing your beard balms and oils evenly across your beard.

I would definitely look into a Beard Brush . I find that combs are only really useful when you have a big ass beard, Stay away from anything plastic though as they’re not good for your facial hair.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I use http://www.amazon.com/Resolve-Laundry-Remover-Original-Trigger/dp/B003LLMPYY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1396213790&sr=8-3&keywords=stain+spray every time I throw shirts into the wash on stains like that. A few sprays and into the washing machine. Comes out super clean and I haven't noticed any damage to the clothing.

A big thing though is to not put clothing with stains into the dryer. If you put them into the dryer, for some reason, it becomes impossible to wash out.

u/StillLife_woodpecker · 4 pointsr/IAmA

Getting a proper mustache/beard comb was the biggest game-changer for me.

Get one brush/comb and one oil/balm will not get you an amazing beard. However, it will make the beard or mustache you have more amazing.

(Not affiliated in anyway with any of those companies)

Beard oil, will definitely help, and yes I bought my
brush off amazon

What would YOU TREAT YO SELF TO? aannnddd now I'm going to go watch that episode..

Thanks for the contest!

Thanks, that's what I ended up doing basically.

I've got a few combs/brushes:
Moustache: https://www.amazon.com/Kent-Handmade-Beard-Moustache-X-Small/dp/B00354XMH6/ref=sr_1_12_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1479324660&sr=1-12&keywords=kent+comb
Beard:
http://www.cvs.com/shop/beauty/beauty-tools-accessories/hair-brushes-combs/conair-for-men-style-and-shine-prodid-961358?skuId=961358

Are there other's you'd suggest I go for?

I've been using this beard oil post-shower, though I've got the oils to make my own just haven't had time: http://www.cvs.com/shop/beauty/hair-care/treatments/nuance-salma-hayek-healthy-shine-nourishing-oil-2-oz-prodid-1013469?skuId=949622

along with tea tree oil before bed.

And per the wiki/searching this subreddit, I've been using this tacky daily to keep the longer moustache hairs out of the way: http://www.firehousemoustachewax.com/Products.html (works so good!!)

Thanks for the review, it's been going well!

u/Callasurgeon · 5 pointsr/Moustache

I make my own wax but I definitely recommend a Kent's moustache and beard comb. Kent 81T- Men's Handmade Beard/Moustache Comb, X-Small https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00354XMH6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_H2USzbAY79Z88

u/Red_AtNight · 1 pointr/NoStupidQuestions

In theory you could.

There are, however, beard cosmetics on the market. I would also recommend getting a beard brush.

Something like this would work as a beard brush, and something like this as a beard product.

u/mistergiantacorn · 2 pointsr/beards

I’ve started using this beard oil to help shape it and alleviate some dry skin issues I’ve had. I got this beard comb/brush set to help try to keep it somewhat tame.

I’ve only started recently trying to grow it out longer so still a work in progress! I have a Wahl trimmer I use to get any crazy hairs that don’t want to cooperate hah

u/Robert_Fear · 2 pointsr/Entrepreneur

You are right that there is room for some accessories. I would work some in. Still a focus on beard product though. :)

There are just so many opportunities in the beard area, that I would maximize there first.

2-4 weeks is still too long. You need 2-4 days. Order some of the product to you. Stock and ship it. Nothing you can say or do will overcome peoples expectations for quick shipping. This is too ingrained now. Buying some product is not a big investment.

A phone number goes a long way. This can be something like Google voice and it goes to voicemail. A phone number goes a long way to looking legit. Especially important if no one knows who you are.

Virtually no one will pay a retail price. The exceptions are for a well-established brand, or if you have some great story/reason.

Ask yourself, how much would you pay? Let's assume you don't look at Aliexpress.

A quick search on Amazon (in USA):

This is $6.99 after $1 off coupon. 2 day shipping
https://www.amazon.com/Beard-Brush-Men-Softening-Conditioning/dp/B01MR513G3/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1525011024&sr=8-3&keywords=beard+balm+brush

------------
Now look at this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Cosprof-Moustache-Conditioner-Healthy-Moisturizing/dp/B0761GGZQ3/ref=sr_1_8_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1525011024&sr=8-8&keywords=beard+balm+brush

This is what you are competing against. If you can't beat them on either price or some other aspect, it is not a good business model.

Granted, there will be MUCH less competition in Canda, but you need the US sales.

What I do with mine is I use this to act as a guide to trim my checks. Works perfectly

u/BrunoHillside · 3 pointsr/Moustache

You should try one of these. Great comb specifically for a tache. Kent's moustache and beard comb. Kent 81T- Men's Handmade Beard/Moustache Comb, X-Small Kent mustache and beard comb

u/Ankhmpt · 1 pointr/malegrooming

Get a boar bristle brush and comb it a lot. Like this one. Beard & Mustache Brush and Comb Kit - Boar Bristle Beard Brush & Wooden Grooming Comb - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AYMHBLY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_OSFRBb5PH6X5Y

Edit: I can’t attest to the brand linked.. I suggest you try a few and see what one you like. Some are more rough than others.

u/thibit · 1 pointr/beards

Free? Hahahahahaha...

u/HonkForHammocks · 4 pointsr/Ultralight

long bearded person here.

i use a wooden comb
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SYJE50A/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_sHx8CbW42YEZY

and a small brush
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MR513G3/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_GHx8CbDVS4RN9

both are small, light, and disappear into my pack my hair is very wavy and tends to twist and lock up if i don't comb it regularly. i tend to use the comb instead of touching my face if i feel a tickle or a pull, which helps keep the oils clean and healthy.

another thing to consider is how you'll wash your hair. i've been using the biodegradable backcountry all over wash stuff, and it works well, but takes a few days to get proper health and moisture back after being on the trail. i've even had to trim everything off and start over after longer trips.

u/Casanova-Quinn · 1 pointr/beards

Solid stache. I'd suggest a getting a moustache comb to keep it neat and out of your mouth.

u/bautin · 2 pointsr/funny

If you're trying to say I'm a neckbeard, then this would have been the appropriate gift. You're implying that I shave it or at the very least keep it trimmed.

u/Schenectadye · 2 pointsr/beards

6 months, washed, oiled, waxed, brushed. Mustache styled with 81 T comb, fingers, and Fisticuffs.

My needs:

  1. Simple wide-toothed comb, akin to a fro pick. Wooden is nice.
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071GTKD66/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_pB4UDb5VVFHE9

  2. Beard brush.
Depending on your hair, you may want softer: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AYMHBLY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_yC4UDbRER7D10
    Or firmer: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Q5JHGVQ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

  3. Beard oil and or balm.
I use a little oil after shower at night before bed, and a little balm after cold shower in the morning. For oil, I mix my own. Jojoba oil, maybe a little argan, and whatever woody essential oils I like for scent. For balm, I actually use this: Badger Unscented Balm for Sensitive Dry Skin - 2oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007A4VY9A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_mF4UDbQK5VTFD
Technically not a beard balm, but it’s got no garbage in it, and there’s always a premium or up-charge on beard-specific products, and I’m not down with that bullshit.

  4. Beard wash.
I also mix my own “beard shampoo,” basically just Dr. Bronner’s soap, diluted 3:1 or 4:1, add a little oil of some sort (jojoba, olive or avocado), and perhaps a little peppermint oil. Basically you just want a gentle soap. A bunch of recipes online, but similarly, beard-specific products will always cost more than their components. I pay almost nothing for great beard care, except a little time.

    Beard on!

For those looking for a cheaper entry brush... I got this brush from amazon for <$1. Signed up for www.snagshout.com (amazon product review site) and i found the product in their list of items which you can get for discount if you review it.

u/geoguy78 · 1 pointr/beards

I bought the Striking Viking brush and comb set on Amazon for around thirteen bucks. So far so good. The brush is boar bristle and the comb is pearwood.

Try using this as a first shot and then soaking in seltzer water and milk if that doesn't do the trick.

u/ezfrag · 3 pointsr/EDC

I carried the same Kent comb for over 3 years and then one day it just wasn't in my pocket anymore. I've been meaning to find a suitable replacement.

u/splago · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

I’d highly recommend this brush, and this block of alum has lasted me three years.
