For gas last year I built a extended run system using a 14 gallon caddy. Took the hose off, put a brass fitting, fuel line and some fuel clamps. The you just need a fuel cap like this one which I like because itās Made in the USA and includes a great magnetic dip stick and funnel. Lastly here is the quick disconnect fitting for the cap.
Fill it up and run all weekend long.
If it truly is a tank vent and doesn't admit air, closing it while running will create low fuel pressure and starve the motor. I would look at replacing it with a proper tank vent, like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ZFUYOM/
