I love this list, I kept thinking "ditto!" with almost everything you wrote! Because I can't help myself, here is some of my feedback on some of those products:

For boob cream- I loooove the Motherlove Nipple Cream. The Earth Mama Angel Baby one was really grainy to me, and I'm not a big fan of the cocoa butter smell (to each their own!). The Motherlove cream saved my nipples those first few weeks and I still use it after a long pumping session.

Leak management- gurl I feel you on being leaky! I am SO leaky. I love the nighttime Bamboobies, they're the only ones that work for me (and I have to switch them out three times a day). The downside is they're pretty obvious through clothing, so when I have to go out of the house I'll pop a disposable lansinoh one in there instead. But Bamboobies all the way!

Leak Collection!- Yes! The Milkies Milksaver I have has been great at catching the ~1oz I leak from the non-nursing side. Now that Miss V and I have more of a breastfeeding pattern that involves her only eating from one side per session I'm going to try out a Haakaa Silicone Pump to see if the suction will draw out even more ounces from the neglected boob.

Extra Pump Parts- NeneSupply on Amazon is a Spectra pumping girl's best friend, especially for hard-ish to find and expensive spare Spectra parts.

Nursing Bras- They're expensive but I'm a total Bravado fanatic. I'm a big girl and they carry a wide variety of sizes, even for the much bigger bust sizes. And they recently released this hands free pumping attachment that, the few times I've experimented with it, was freaking awesome. I hope it continues to be awesome when I go back to work!

Edit:
Oh! I forgot one of my favorite pumping accessories! The Pumpin' Pals Super Shields have made a difference in my output but are also a thousand times more comfortable that regular flanges. Plus you can recline while pumping without spilling breastmilk everywhere! I was gifted these by a friend at my shower and I was skeptical about them living up to the Amazon reviews hype but I am definitely happy to have them.

Cute picture, but so sorry about the mastitis! My sister had it with one of her kids, and it sounds sooo painful!

A few thoughts, speaking as someone who has oversupply problems and overcame it....

  1. Your LC sounds pretty good, I'd do another session with her now that this has come up and see what she says.
  2. For the uneven boobs, I have the same problem. I always feed first with the "bad" (in your case, left) boob then switch to the one with more supply.
  3. If you're getting a significant amount of letdown while you're feeding with your left, you can try wearing a letdown shell (there are several kinds, available through Medella, Milkies, etc.) on your right when you're feeding. I have been able to store/freeze between 2-4 oz daily this way, by accumulating it throughout the day instead of just letting it leak onto a nursing pad. Your LC may be able to give you a freebie in this category too.
  4. You're going to hate this one at first, but I'd avoid pumping as much as possible, especially if you're using an electric pump. That's probably what is giving you oversupply is that the electric pump is ramping up your boobs on top of breastfeeding. The breasts will adjust if you're exclusively breastfeeding, especially if your milk is still coming in (it takes 3-4 months to reach your full milk supply). If you're uncomfortable, I'd recommend hand expressing. When I had an oversupply I'd take showers and hand express it out until it no longer hurt, this worked really well for me. Try expressing before the baby feeds, so that you can get a deeper latch. Once they've ramped down, try to avoid hand expressing as much as you are comfortable.
  5. A few people on this thread are recommending the haaka pump. I LOVE this pump. But, I didn't realize this fully at first, it serves a different function for people with oversupply. It stays on with suction so it is a lot stronger than a letdown shell....and as a person with oversupply, it was giving me oversupply issues since it was acting like a pump. But if you just use it at an overnight feeding or are at a point when you feel full when you're not feeding, it's useful in that way so that you never have to use an electric pump unless you're at work. Your LC may have opinions about this as well....the haaka gets mixed reviews on reddit sometimes, I think.
  6. If you feel feel a clogged duct coming on, feed the baby on just that side for awhile, and try dangle feeding and a warm compress. For the warm compress, take a cup of dried rice and some water and microwave it, then put it in a plastic bag. Hand express where it feels "hard" on the boob for awhile, it should work its way out if you're diligent.
  7. For hand expressing, I like to take a flange from an electric pump and just put it in the bottle, with the wide part facing out. That way I get a little "funnel" so I don't spill milk all over. ;)

    Good luck!!!

Yes - supplementer :)

This is a link for the "starter" one that costs about $18 on Amazon
It was okay. I used it for about 2 days, but it spilled milk on me two times and just didn't work 2x (because I'd put it together wrong).

This is the expensive-ass one I have (at least it comes with 2 so I can use one and have the next one ready & it's never leaked on me and seems to be pretty idiot-proof to put together after figuring it out by doing it the first couple of times).
I chose it because a few blogs with women whose stories seemed somewhat similar to our issues said it was better, and it is also according to the reviews easier to tuck into a bra to nurse discretely in public and nurse lying down (both of these are very important to me as this is my 3rd kid).

Here's a link for the other one that seems to be popular.

I was seeing an IBCLC weekly and all I wanted to do was exclusively breastfeed and triple-feeding (attempt to nurse, bottle, pump) was so exhausting, I really wish I had started the whole SNS journey sooner ... maybe we'd be able to wean from it sooner and be only breastfeeding. It was so, so amazing when we were able to cut the amount of "top off" by like 2/3 in just 2 weeks. I cannot sing the praises of at-breast supplementation enough -
if what you really want to be doing is breastfeeding, it's BREASTFEEDING, you know?

We've kind of plateaued at the 10oz level, but that may be because of the shield, or other issues we have that I'm hoping will resolve if we stick with it as she gets bigger/stronger. (I actually joined to post/ask about our particular struggle.)

If you're looking for supplements, I found that milkmaid tea and old fashioned oatmeal really helped me a lot.

Things I forgot:

  • waterproof crib sheets (put em all on so you can just take one off in the middle of the night

  • wet bags if you’re trying cloth diapers

  • more pacifiers

  • white noise machine (someone gave me an old one but it broke fast)

  • Velcro swaddles (it’s easier)

  • fabric carrier, like the big scarf kind (way easier than the straps kind)

  • baby monitor

  • for breastfeeding: I liked silicon caps (think like pasties) but not at first! (I got mastitis while I was learning the schedule because the silicon caps don’t let anything out). I also tried these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H75C9Y3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_COqSDbHEVP2QQ which were obvious on my large breasts but I wore them around the house and they were super convenient.

  • Milk storage cups

  • hand pump (easier and less time consuming than electric pump)

  • pumping bra for electric pumping (you do not want to hold the flanges to your chest for a half hour or more, it’s depressing and you can’t scratch your nose)

  • stroller that works for babies under a year: I got a stroller that a baby would sit in, totally didn’t realize it wouldn’t work until he’s good holding up his head. Ended up getting a good deal on a jogging stroller/car seat combo that worked out way better.

  • postpartum underwear (I didn’t forget these but they were soooo handy and comfortable)

Oh and we were totally blindsided by the fact that some hospitals try to jerk you around on the car seat, we were told (right before we were supposed to leave) that we had to take baby out in a car seat, and the one we had wasn’t a carrier type so my in laws ran out and bought one. I liked it better anyway, so luckily when I got the jogging stroller deal it came with a carrier type car seat that clicks into the stroller too.

I use the Medela pump in style. It gets the job done, but I can't say if others are better, because it's the only one I've used. I bought the one that comes with a toteb bag. Here's one that has some more accessories and a backpack instead of the tote.

Congrats on awesome insurance! Mine only covered $100ish, and I thought it was good lol.

u/superkatalyst · 2 pointsr/breastfeeding

Comfort is definitely a factor in getting better yields. That and I'm able to pump longer at home and with out the stress that comes with pumping at work.

Medela parts are more readily available at stores so their parts are easier to replace but you can easily find replacement parts for both brands on amazon.
You can use non native brands with both pump parts as long as the neck size matches. Medela pump parts will fit standard/narrow size bottles and Spectra flanges fit with wide neck bottles. However you can buy an adapter like this so you can use narrow neck bottles with you're Spectra if that's what you prefer.
I had the PISA first so I bought an adapter to fit my Spectra pump with my medela parts since already had a bunch of medela stuff.

My Spectra pump actually came with two wide neck Spectra brand bottles so I use those too when I'm out of clean medela parts. It should come with yours too if that's what you decide to go with.

u/tikibyn · 2 pointsr/BabyBumps

Nope. I looked at how much of my areola was being pulled into the shield and realized it was more than they show in the pictures, and then just ordered a smaller size to test it. It worked better, but then there was still some extra areola, so I ordered the size even smaller. Here is the medela sizing. You can measure your nipple, but I thought that was really awkward.

Also, FYI, the off-brand flanges from Amazon worked great for me. I even bought some of the one-piece pump parts and they were nice because of fewer individual pieces to wash (I think that was the only way I found 19mm?). I actually leave two old flanges in my kitchen cupboard because they make great funnels for filling reusable applesauce pouches, among other things.

u/DumbledoresRme · 2 pointsr/BreastPumps

I cannot agree more. I got the Medela parts from the hospital and a friend lent me her adapters. I think the Medela parts are easier to use and clean, they're much more versatile, bottles fit better, and replacement parts are cheaper and easier to find. I found the Spectra parts bigger, clunkier, and harder to get used to. So yes--Spectra pump, Medela parts+adapter.

Found on Amazon for $8. Maymom Flange Adapter for Spectra S1 Pumps, Spectra S2 Pump; Connects Between Breastshield and Spectra Backflow Protector (Maymom Flange Adapter (White)) https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B072LV9Q61/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Mv8RDbAB5QCX6

u/TheMarlieJane · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

I use the Pumparoo bag and staging mat to hold my pump parts and to have a clean surface to setup/breakdown the parts, and I use this breastmilk cooler for the milk bottles. I keep them both in the fridge at work between pumping sessions so I don't need to wash the pump flanges and bottles between pumping sessions. The little cooler comes with a nice, thick freezer pack and I think I would feel comfortable leaving the milk out of the fridge with that ice pack.

I carry it all in this pump bag. The Spectra S2 fits (very tightly) in the side zip compartment that's designed to hold a cooler bag, and I keep the pumparoo, breastmilk cooler, hands-free-bra, and everything else inside the big part of the bag.

Good luck with your first day back! :-)

u/eurekahd · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

It's so hard to keep track of measuring when you're so sleep deprived! I lost count and had to start over so. many. times. Don't worry, your baby will be fine. :)

This is why we eventually bought a cheap digital kitchen scale (the Amazon basics one) and started measuring formula by weight instead of scoops. I put a post-it on the formula can lid with the correct weight and just scooped until the number matched - no worries about losing count (and much more accurate)! (Especially helpful once our son was old enough that we felt comfortable making enough for more than one bottle at a time.)

I also had several of the small bottles meant for storing breast milk (from the hospital when I rented my pump) - they were perfect for storing one bottle's worth of pre-measured formula. If you don't happen to have a pre-existing stash of small bottles, something like the Munchkin formula dispenser works really well.

u/ithasbecomeacircus · 4 pointsr/Mommit

I used a nursing apron, which was great until my daughter started kicking it a lot during nursing.

After that, I'd use a nursing bra with built in foam pads (no re-positioning needed!) with a tank top underneath another shirt or sweater. I'd pull the tank top down over one breast and the top shirt up, so the tank top would keep my stomach and back covered and the top shirt would keep my chest and breast covered. When this ensemble is paired with a jacket, it's pretty impossible for anyone to see anything.

I’m in the exact same boat. Sitting here with my 4 week old now. I’ve been taking the babe on lots of target/Costco trips. I keep her in the car seat and covered or I’ll wear her close to my chest. Since it’s been rainy/cold, a few trips around the store gets me out of the house and but also out of the weather. I don’t buy much of anything so it’s cheap and I’ll always go around 10am so there’s practically no one there. Since the weather is better today we’re going to walk around the domain and get a little bit of sun. Again, baby stays safely secure in the car seat away from people and germs. This little cover is a lifesaver:

Ive only had them a day, but so far majorly love the washable ones. I have a lot of leaking after my 4 hour sleep, and these are definitely better than disposables were. I am no longer waking up wet as these absorb enough...and they're really soft.

I have an 18mo old and am pregnant with twins. I also had the Spectra S2 pump for my first and loved it. I bought a second one to keep at work. You can buy spare parts for the S2 on Amazon, but I’d wait until you figure out which size flanges work for you.

I used the simple wishes hands free pumping bra. I kept it with my pump and just put it on each time I pumped. I had one bra with each pump (home and work). I wore regular nursing bras and just I clicked the cups down and fastened the simple wishes over the top of the nursing bra.

I also want to say the wide mouth Avent bottles screw directly onto the Spectra with no adaptors needed. So if you are purchasing bottles get the Avent ones for convenience. We used the Avent naturals and had both the 4oz and 9oz sizes. They make glass ones too if that is something at interests you.

I also used the kiinde system of pumping directly into bags while at work. I wouldn’t worry about that yet, you’ll have some time to figure out what works for you before you return to work.
I also used a wet bag to carry the pump parts back & forth to work. I used this one: Sarah Wells Pumparoo Wet/Dry Bag for Breast Pump Parts (Black and White) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B011M7MIRW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_IB2MBbGFWZJAJ

Lastly, if you have a health FSA (flexible spending account) or an HSA (health savings account) please know just about everything related to breastfeeding is an eligible expense. My FSA reimbursed me for the extra Spectra S2 I bought from Amazon, the pump parts bag, spare flanges, spare duckbill valves, and all my breast milk bags (kiinde system & bags too). I’m not sure if they would also cover the cost of the pumping bras as I got mine as gifts.

Products:

Spectra S1 pump (rechargeable version)(I actually had 2 pumps, one for home and one for work)

Bravado nursing bras

Papablic pump adapters for pumping into breastmilk bags

[Papablic adapters for pumping directly into Dr. Browns bottles](https://www.amazon.com/Papablic-Leak-proof-Adapter-Spectra-Flanges/dp/B077GRWGF9/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=papablic+spectra&qid=1573793877&sr=8-4]

NUK breastmilk bags

Dr. Browns pump bag (used for work)

I used 32mm flanges and an LC said they were probably on the larger side for my nipple size but that if it wasn't causing me any pain then it wasn't an issue.

Routine:

With the Spectra pump it starts at like cycle level 54- I never actually did the letdown mode (cycle level 70). I'm pretty sure I didn't follow the recommended user guide for the pump.

I would start out at 54/4 for five minutes, then gradually increase to 54/8 over the course of 20-25 minutes.

I did this in front of an LC once and she said that I ended up having like, 3-4 letdowns over the course of the 20-25 minutes.

*I pumped every 4 hours- 6am, 10am at work, 2pm at work, 6pm, 10pm, and 2am for 20-25 minutes at a time

I've had good luck with the bamboo reusable pads: Amazon. But I agree that this would be awesome as a nursing bra!

u/Cville_Reader · 1 pointr/breastfeeding

I haven't heard that advice about membranes but I'm inclined to agree with you. I started ordering the membranes that are already attached to the valve and feel like I had better results with those flimsy little membranes.

I love my Spectra pump! Got these bad boys and they made life so much easier! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072LV9Q61/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_bzN1AbFH3YPHT

We got a ton of Medela bottles donated from a friend and I was so happy to find these. Also let me use different size flanges. I think I got those from Maymom too since the standard ones didn’t work for me.

Edit: my insurance also covered a new set of accessories (bottles, tubes, flanges, valves, the whole kit) after a few months - maybe 3-6? They did it twice so I had spares, which was awesome, in particular since the valves would tear like someone else said. And I didn’t even know insurance covered it, fortunately the supplier I got the pump through did it all for me!

u/mrs_fairymay · 3 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

u/headlessbob17, happy thursday! have a great one! Also, I'm seriously jealous of the belt you were gifted - I love fancy belts! Can't wait to wear mine again once my munchkin is here - most don't fit right now (go figure! ;)).

As for an add-on, I have a few, but this is probably what I'm needing most, what with my little one coming in 2 weeks or less! On my baby list :D Thanks for the contest!

You can definitely mix and match. For example I have a Medela pump, but I attach a Lansinoh pump adapter to the duck-bill/valve part and pump directly into a bag. I also recently discovered that the Medela bags will fit around the Lansinoh pump adapter.

Here's a link to where you can get the Lansinoh adapters. They saved me! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075HPVKH1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You can buy spectra to small bottle adapters. I just got my S2 in the mail today but haven't used it yet. I tested the adapters though and it's a perfect fit, so I can still use all the medela bottles I have.

I feed LO around 5:30/6am and then immediately pump afterwards while I put on makeup/do my hair for work. Depending on whether or not she slept through the night, I usually get between 6 and 12 oz. I leave one bottle out fresh for her, for her first bottle of the day, and put the rest in the refrigerator. I then pump at 10am and 2pm where I get between 6 and 7oz at each pump session. I then feed her when I get home. She typically takes between 4.5 and 5oz every 2.5 - 3 hours. This is a lot for a breast fed baby, but we use a preemie nipple and I have taught my caretakers paced feeding, and this seems to be what she wants, so I roll with it. She's been sleeping 8-11 hour stints without eating at night for 2 months though, so I think she just gets most of her calories during the day.

I have a Spectra S1 which I love, but I have to use the Medela breast shields because Spectra didn't make them in 21mm. I have two tote bags. One I keep my pump and tub of coconut butter and purse and work stuff in, and then an insulated tote I keep the small medela cooler with the 4 bottles and and ice pack in and a wet dry bag (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B011M7MIRW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1) that I keep my pump accessories in. I keep a gel ice pack in the zippered pocket of the wet dry bag. After I pump I clean out the breast shield with the medela antibacterial wipes and keep them in the bag with the ice pack inside the insulated tote. I wash them once at night with hot water and soap. I have to traipse all over the damn place to get to our pump room (I work in a cubicle farm) and I would have to go even farther to get to a refrigerator, so I don't even bother. This is why I only pump twice at work.

I use a Spectra with Medela parts. I like the Medela flanges better, the spectra ones didn’t fit right. For this setup I bought:

u/SailorTits · 5 pointsr/askwomenadvice

If someone's having sex with you they are not going to suddenly stop and be like "oh my god, your nipple is doing a thing!" It's really a non issue.

However, if this is something you can't get over you have a few options. There are places that can pierce your nipple to make it not be inverted anymore, but make sure you do a lot of research and look for someone who knows how to do it, maybe ask your doctor if they know someone. You could also give something like this a try.

u/vickyrex · 3 pointsr/breastfeeding

I started out with single use but man they are kinda terrible. Noisy, itchy, hard to keep in place. I keep one package in the diaper bag just in case but reusable are the way to go. I use the bamboobies brand and they have been great. Be sure if there are overnight vs regular that you get a set of each, they really do serve different purposes.

I use these.

Medela Storage Bottles

I actually got mine for free from the hospital because my baby was in the NICU and not allowed to breastfeed at first, so I was exclusively pumping. They hold 2.5 ounces each and are washable and reusable (I'm still kicking myself that I threw out quite a few after one use before deciding to save them). Very handy for us!

u/yogi1107 · 3 pointsr/BabyBumps

I was told to make sure I had an extra set of tubing, the flanges, and the valves (???).

My pump actually came with 2 sets of tubing and stuff so I’m just going to order whatever I need when I use the second set of something.

https://www.amazon.com/Spectra-Breastpump-Replace-Backflow-Protector/dp/B019JL32MS?th=1 amazon has this replacement set but I don’t think the bottles are necessary since the Avent ones fit too.

Maybe a STM can comment on which extra parts were necessary.

I had a stretchy nursing cover I would toss on until I felt more comfortable breastfeeding with no cover! What really prompted the switch though is my baby no longer was content under the cover so I was just as discreet as possible. Clothes specifically meant for nursing were easier to be discreet in!

When she consented to the cover I used Something like this:

I love my breast shells! I could never get the hand of suctioning the hakaa, and these slip right into your bra: Breast Shells, Nursing Cups, Milk Saver, Protect Sore Nipples for Breastfeeding, Collect Breastmilk Leaks for Nursing Moms, Soft and Flexible Silicone Material, Reusable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075GBX2GP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_vIOTCbR7P90M9

The best ones I've used are the Johnson contour pads because they are shaped to fit inside my bra, they aren't too huge and they are soft. I've only found them at one store near me, Walmart I think, but now I've found them on Amazon so I'll probably start buying them there once I'm done with this box of Lasinoh.

I had chronic low supply. I power pumped all day every day. I spent tons of money on supplements, extra pump parts, lovely pumping bras. I was able to make a very small amount and continued this way for months.

I missed so much time i could have held my baby!

Here’s what is worth trying in my opinion

Lact aid - https://www.amazon.com/Lact-Aid-Deluxe-Nursing-Trainer-System/dp/B00A8S0EY6

A pain in the ass to use often. But it allows you to feed baby and work on latch while stimulating milk production

Legendairy Milk supplements also helped

Gatoraid/cal-mag supplements also were good

All in all, the important thing to remember is you can bond with your baby and provide food. If your body can’t make enough milk, it hurts, but you are not alone. If it seems it is taking time away from self care and being with your baby, it is okay to stop ❤️

I did the same thing when I breastfed. My lactation consultant also recommended using a nipple everter, which I bought, but never used because I didn't end up needing to. I can mail it to you if you like! Just PM me.

So I was pretty annoyed to see how expensive pump bags were. It was hard to find anything that was under $80. I did a lot of searching around the internet and found this carry-all pump bag from Dr. Brown's that fits my pump, all its parts, a case of 100 medela milk freezer bags, a cooler with 4 medela bottles and ice pack, my hands free pump bra and there's still room for more in there and its price is under $50!

I asked my wife and she said the bottles came with her pump. I do recall what she did, since breast milk doesn't stay good very long outside of the freezer, is she would use those zip-lockable breast milk bags, dump the milk from the bottle to the bag. Then we would thaw out a baggy of milk and use it in any old bottle as usual when we needed to.

The only part that we "had" to replace were these little pieces, which we replaced with each baby. Nothing told us we had to, but since they came in direct contact with the milk and seemed pretty flimsy, we replaced them on our own anyway. Everything else we just sterilized before using with the new baby.

I could have sworn....Aha!! I don't think Medela is the manufacturer? I'll post the whole link. I actually searched "Medela 19mm" on Amazon. This is the set I bought in 21mm and it works just fine with my Medela Double Electric Pump.

I use this one: http://www.amazon.com/Nursing-Breastfeeding-Maddie-Moo-Breastfeed/dp/B0173VF0GM

I like the plastic lip at the top that ensures that I can see my baby while I'm feeding her.

u/pickled--peppers · 2 pointsr/breastfeeding

OK, I've been thinking about this all day. Would a set-up like this be possible for you?

u/wickedlittlehigh · 2 pointsr/breakingmom

The only ones I found that I liked were Johnson & Johnson's breast pads.

These! They are the most comfortable ones I have found so far, and don't make my boobs look lumpy at all. I absolutely HATED the medela ones personally. I felt the same way, like I looked like I had stuffed my bra with a wad of tissues.

If you plan on nursing, in the beginning, you will leak out of the breast baby isn't feeding on. These shells catch the milk so your shirt doesn't get soaked! And a bonus--if you sanitize them, you can save the milk and freeze it for later!

Yes to the dishes question, and no to the shells. I posted a link to the brand I had. They did work well when you leak. And were amazing for those beginning of breastfeeding sore nipples.

I found a 19mm flange on Amazon made by a company called Maymom that is supposed to work for Madelas. I am contemplating ordering them as the 21mm are a little big for me too.

Due to medical complications with our children, my wife pumped for almost 4 years (2 kids). After the first 2 weeks with our firstborn, we knew he wouldn't be able to feed normally, so we went out and bought a nice electric pump. When our second was born with a full cleft palette as our son was moving to formula, we just kept going.

The battery-powered backpack and a strap provided by the hospital allowed her to perform other tasks while pumping and made it portable enough we could take it with us on trips.

u/poorbobsweater · 1 pointr/breastfeeding

Normal (unfortunately). If it turns to pain, then you probably have an issue to address. Lots of open air time helped me. I also used the below bc I leaked a lot or if we had people over visiting/helping and I didn't want my nips just totally out haha.
