Sorry this took me so long!

I made these candles with soy wax because not only does it make a pretty, milky color, but it also burns clean. You can also use any other wax like beeswax or paraffin (the least expensive option).

This is what I bought from amazon:

Soy Wax: http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Soy-444-Wax-pound/dp/B001QMXKN0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1426444164&sr=8-1&keywords=soy+wax
Pouring Pot: http://www.amazon.com/candlemakers-4-pound-Pouring-Pot/dp/B007VFWW6C/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1426444189&sr=8-3&keywords=candle+pitcher
Wick: http://www.amazon.com/CandleScience-Natural-Candle-Medium-piece/dp/B0092RKNDQ/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1426444213&sr=8-5&keywords=wick
Candle Color: http://www.amazon.com/Candle-Colors-Dye-Block-Single/dp/B007VGFWIQ/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1426444246&sr=8-9&keywords=candle+color

It is honestly so easy and fun to make these! First start by boiling a large stockpot of water, filled ~1/3 of the way. Fill the candle pouring pot with ~3 cups of wax shavings. You need to do some trial and error with how much wax to melt, but I started by melting ~3 cups of wax shavings at a time. Let the wax shavings melt. When they have melted break off a very small (the dye is very bright) chunk (I used a piece about half the size of an eraser) and let the color melt into the soy wax. Stir with a wooden spoon (not a good one, keep this one for candles only!).

Now you are ready to pour the candles. I started by curling the ends of the wicks around a pencil and then lowering the wick, metal bottom down, into the teacup in the center. Then slowly pour the wax into the teacup, holding the pencil/wick steady (it will move and you will have to re-center the wick, but you have plenty of time before the candle sets). Fill up the teacup as much, or as little, as you'd like. Be careful to not let the wick unravel into the wet candle. If it does unravel into the wet candle, simply pull it out of the wax and wrap it tighter around the pencil. Let the candles set. Once they have set (I left them overnight, but they were ready after ~4 hours) cut the wicks to 1". Voila beautiful teacup candles!

This was pretty easy, but it was very time consuming. Although, I did this with my mom and we had such a great time making them! Since we did this I actually have purchased scents and made a bunch of candles for myself and will be making them for gifts, it is really fun!

EDIT: I should add that you can make this even more budget-friendly than what I did by using wax in blocks that isn't pre-shaved, paraffin wax and cutting your own wicks!

Thank you! I like to save jars from cooking, and started thinking I could make some candles with them. So I bought an enormous amount of soy wax and candle wicks from Amazon for ~$30 total. I also had some essential oil samples that I saved from work for this purpose.
I made a double boiler with a large metal bowl and a large pot of water. Melted the wax down, let it sit for a minute or two, then added the oils (so they wouldn't evaporate as quickly? it seemed pretty hot, so just an idea).
Then I made a makeshift funnel out of parchment paper, wrapped the wicks around skewers to keep them in place, and poured it in!
One thing I noticed with the first batch is that it takes a LOT of fragrance to actually smell like anything when you burn it. So I doubled the amount I used for the remaining batches and it seemed good. I don't have any measurements but I'd estimate ~3oz of oil for 1lb of wax.
Also I will put a bunch of parchment paper or something down next time, because I made a complete mess while scooping and dripped wax all over my counters. Had to come back with a razor blade when it dried :)
Overall it was really fun and relaxing, and I only used about half of my supplies! Making the labels was also cathartic.
So all the candles pictured (including the two huge ones in the back!) cost about $15 to make.
They burn relatively evenly, but I do get a bit of unevenness like you said, especially with ones where I used more oil. They dry pretty smoothly though.

I just bought this cute one on Amazon. It seems to work pretty well, is pretty easy to clean, and I like how minimalist it is (most of the other options I looked at were overly baroque or had bold /ugly patterns). I'm super new to wax melting, so I have no clue how this compares cost wise.

u/GrumpysWorkshop · 2 pointsr/Leathercraft

And I'm saying you don't need chisels at all. But that's crazy talk right?

That book I linked, and the making cases series, is the single best purchase I've ever made when it comes to leatherwork, bar none.

But you want specifics, right?

u/nerdkraft · 1 pointr/turning

That's a bit of a tall order :)
Just give them a little wax along with the bowl. Tell them if it ever starts looking dull to just wipe some on.

You can buy butcher block oil for $12 or make your own.

Cheap, effective, edible finish:

  1. Go to the drug store. Buy two $3 bottles of mineral oil. You will find it near the laxatives.

  2. Go to the craft store or Amazon. Buy a bag of bees wax chips or a brick. Yellow or white - doesn't matter.
Stakich 1-lb Pure White BEESWAX Pellets - Cosmetic Grade, Top Quality - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001LQZOLW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_WQKDwb63YV70A

  3. Pour first bottle of mineral oil into a small cooking pot. Heat up the mineral oil on low heat - many people use a double boiler but my stove goes super low so I am not as worried. Drop a few chunks of the wax in to see if it starts melting - that's the temperature you want. Stir wax in.
The ratio is usually 50/50 but I also make a higher wax content version as well to make it more like a polish.

Don't let it get too hot. Take it off the stove if needed.

  4. Pour the mix into a clean jar (or many clean jars for gifts).

Use the other bottle to do a first flood coat. Then After letting the wood absorb some mineral oil, just wipe of your home made finish on and wipe off a few mins later. This also works great on the lathe allowing you to buff the wax.

These are the three items to start the whole process. Mix the waxes as Ozzie describes. Also, as he says, the amount of wax you have to work with is enough for a very long time so initially, sure it costs more than a bottle of regular chain lube but over time it’s definitely a big money saver. It did take me a minute to find the right paraffin oil for the best price, but that was the one. Make sure to strip the chain really well first. Best bet would be to just start with a new chain, strip that, and then wax it.

Good Luck on the Plasma giving! :3

You should start making candles, I love doing it and they are super easy, there are tons of tutorials online.

Basic things you need that you might even already have:

Double boiler

old glass jars, containers etc.

color/scents

wicks

and a base such as soy or wax!

Here is a kit already put together!

Craft it up!

u/pandas_mom · 4 pointsr/Assistance

I'm entering this DIY Candle Kit for my daughter's birthday, coming in at 11.54 from her birthday wishlist.

We can't afford gifts for her till next month, but hopefully from my request she will get some really terrific cards to surprise her!
EDIT: She has had an amazing response to our request for cards!

u/DustForVomit · 2 pointsr/electronic_cigarette
  1. Shouldn't have to replace the base unless it is not firing or causing it to leak.

  2. The shelf life for juice is said to be about one year. YMMV

  3. I buy all of my Kanthal wire from Temco via their ebay store. Go to that link and then search for Kanthal. As far as wick goes...it depends on what you want to use. Ekowool seems to be all the rage these days. I love the stuff. I like to order from Mr. SteamMonkey whenever possible. If he's out, you can get it for about the same price from mr_wick on Ebay. Price was good and he ships quick, but you just have to buy more than you do from SteamMonkey. You can also use 100% cotton wick as long as you don't dry burn it. I use #1/0 Square Braid Candle Wick from Amazon. It's dirt cheap ($8 for 10 yards) and wicks pretty well. Just be sure to boil it first.

  4. Sounds like your Nic is too high for as much as you're vaping. Either vape less or lower the amount of nic in your juice.

    Hope this helps!
u/MacabreChaos · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I was reading this and read about you having to go to the ER and was like "OH NO D:" I'm really glad you and the baby are okay! And congrats on the pregnancy :)

What about a candle-making kit or a soap-making kit?

Cheer up buttercup!

u/batbrat · 2 pointsr/HelpMeFind

Pure beeswax isn't white. You can get cream colored candles that contain a percentage of beeswax, but it's not pure. I think the best place for those would be a church supply: https://www.stjudeshop.com/church-supplies/candles-miscellaneous/altar-candles/beeswax-table-altar-candles-large-diameter/

Here's a company that makes oversized pure beeswax candles, but they're yellow.

Their tall pillars are various widths, but they have a 2"x18" one here.

Their dipped tapers are 1.5" (up to 24")

They also have comb candles, but not tall ones. I feel like you could easily wrap a very tall pillar/taper with comb wax if you really wanted that look.

u/2souless · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

For the wick, I'm going to just buy the ones with the aluminum base like [these] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001PEZZDC/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_img?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2JVBPBGJYYSPJ&coliid=I3Q6POU42CEF6G) because they are cheap, have great reviews, and come in large quantities. For the holders, I'm going to create some out of wine bottles we have lying around by heating them with string and sanding the edges smooth. I'm super excited!

u/CozYoursCandleMaking · 2 pointsr/candlemaking

Why don't you try this stickers? The extra strong double sided adhesive foam discs are perfect for securing wicks to the bottom of your container in hot wax. The candle wick stickers prevent your candle wick from shifting in container while wax cools. They stick fine even after pour wax.

u/seg-fault · 63 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I bought a giant jug of it off Amazon. I also bought some beeswax pellets. I usually condition with just the mineral oil, but every now and then I'll instead use the 'board butter' I made (melt beeswax and mix in mineral oil, allow to cool). Total cost was about $35 but I now have a fuckton of mineral oil and board butter.

Beeswax

Mineral Oil

Also, this stuff is great for other wooden utensils or dishes you might have in your kitchen, such as knife handles, spoons, and salad bowls. Mineral oil also doesn't go rancid, unlike olive oil or coconut oil.

u/ardentTech · 2 pointsr/Leathercraft

Good question, and it pains me a bit that I have a small box of unused tools that were purchased when I began. I'm sure I missed a few things, but here you go:

u/Lynda73 · 3 pointsr/electronic_cigarette

In the Rockin' Robbie video, he uses #1/0 candle wick. I'd say if you do a search for that specific size, you'll get better results. Of course, make sure it's lead-free, 100% undyed cotton.

Edit: Like this (was first result I got. You may find a better one.)

u/kellycblue · 7 pointsr/Indiemakeupandmore

So I was snap chatting my sister this lip color, and thought it would be a good opportunity to show you guys! Please excuse my (faded) makeup from today, it's almost time for bed :-)

I was so so excited to receive my Blackbird order a few days ago, I immediately made some lipsticks out of supplies I've had in my pantry for this occasion. I wanted to make a grayish pink, and ended up with this awesome gray that I love!

I used a tablespoon of coconut oil, cocoa butter, and beeswax pellets until I got the consistency and amount I wanted. I ordered the pellets and butter on Amazon, and the coconut oil at my grocery store.

The shadows I used were a bit of Fiction, Immortals, Lucid, Smudge, and some Imogen. I used a clean plastic fork to put the shadows in the bowl, so I don't know the exact amounts. Never done this before, and I got a lot of stuff in my order so I kind of went ham on making this.

The color is a bit sheer for my taste, but I probably messed up the recipe. I like to top it off with some loose Fiction powder. It lasted a long time as I went for a long walk in the cold, and then drank tea for a few hours. I went to touch up and really didn't need to! I love this color, but let me know what you think!

Amazon. Some links below for ideas. I've purchased all of them, and haven't had any problems with them thus far. Essential oils just search for - obviously that's where part of the experimentation comes in. I use a mix of Frankincense, Amber, Cade (SUPER STRONG SMELL!!! very smoky), Black pepper, and sometimes Sandalwood. You can probably go to a Whole Foods - or similar - and find some essential oils to smell to get ideas too.

I would suggest getting a wax melter and buying soy wax chips on Amazon in bulk. You can add your perfume directly into some chips (just a few drops after you had a handful of chips to the wax melter) and it will make your house smell just as amazing as you! (and you don't need to spend a ton more money) I found linen sprays really don't last that long (scent wise). Alternatively, you can also add drops of perfume to a diffuser. :D

u/xxtidariusxx · 5 pointsr/Vaping

all it takes is a bit of simple math. you can buy everything you need aside from the liquid nicotine on amazon. i myself use 100%vg juice so i dont buy pg at all but a large bottle of vg will run you about 20 to 25 dollars, 1 gallon for me is 22 at the moment. you can also find packs of empty bottles for around 10 bucks, then youll need measuring syringes for mixing, flavor drops and the nicotine all of which are linked below.

i would just mix small batches first if you arent sure what a juice would taste like after your done then mix a full bottle, this way you can experiment with flavor mixes and see what you can create.

for a 100 ml bottle its really easy youll just need to figure out how much nic to put in, i vape at 6% nic so i measure out 94 ml of vg and the last remaining 6 ml i put in as the nicotine, after that the base is done, then just drop in the flavor drops, shake it like crazy, let it settle for a bit and boom juice done.

there are also some sites out there with premade mixture recipes that you can find and follow

The glaze is celestial blue (though I don't think this job does it justice, I knew I didn't like him before I glazed, which was rushed).

What I bought to make the candles:

  1. Paraffin wax ($12.00/5lbs) : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07B4JNWRY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  2. Wicks ($4.95): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015W8DWUO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  3. Pouring hot pot ($11.45):

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C2TS4H2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  4. The smelly oil (I spent >$12.00, it's recommended you use 1oz of oil/ lb of wax): https://www.candlescience.com/fragrance/all-fragrance-oils

I had a thermometer and I just boiled water in a cooking pot to apply the heat.

Obviously new to candle making, there could be better/cheaper tools out there, this is just what I got from ~15 minutes of looking around.

    I used this how-to video.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIQEy7-_c04

I filled 4 smaller pots and have enough to make 5/6 more with the 5 lb amount of wax.
u/Zugzub · -3 pointsr/ContagiousLaughter

hard eye-roll yes, duh, I didn't say it wasn't a wax. 🙄 I just said it isn't pink in its natural state, which it isn't. If it's pink it's dyed

paraffin wax is more of a whitish gray

But good on ya for ignoring the facts

u/PM_Me_Your_Clones · 6 pointsr/electronic_cigarette

If you do it like that, I can see your math. However, if you do it like this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WUPUYCC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_YptHxb7EHCH6V

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005F5OJG6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_KqtHxbP3G3QW7

http://www.carolinaxtract.com/#!product/prd12/3738421821/120ml-sample-100mg-ml-nic-html

http://store.flavorah.com/All-Vaping-Flavors_c_8.html (Or Bull City or ECX or Gremlin, etc. - let's call it $50 in flavoring)

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005UGBG20/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_TxtHxbBFM078P

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000B9V20W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_NBtHxb23GQ99V

You can make ~4L/4000ml of 3mg/ml for ~$150 or a little under $0.04/ml, so ~$4.50 per 120ml with supplies left over.

Maybe I'm mistaken in thinking ~$150 isn't large scale but I'm sure many people on here spend at least that much in a six month period (five 250ml of Blue Dot will run you $187).

You can use paste wax, I also use parafin for planes, Gulf Wax, used for candles but easier to use for this purpose. This is what I use, but its cheaper in grocery stores.
