Got me through residency interviews and dozens of trips after. Holds same as a regular carry on but can fit a suit without wrinkling it.

I found this to be really useful. You can hang your suits and pack everything else you might need and it's carry-on size.

I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts on them as I am weighing up options and am considering this route.

Pros that I see are that you they hold more than a typical carry on garment bag. On the cons, durability and they are a little bit hefty.

It would be awesome to have your thoughts on other solutions - namely carry on garment bags (standard type) or smaller bags that may count as a personal item (as opposed to you primary carry on item)

Basically I'm all ears and need you advice.

Budget is around $250 FWIW but not wanting to rule anything out.

This is the one I got, I got the Large size. It’s 20.5” long, I think most airlines have a length limit of like 22”

Edit: oops just saw you were asking about backpack. I’ve used my backpack as a personal item flying a lot, I don’t pack it very full though. It’s a Patagonia chacabuco 32 liter backpack.

I got this tri-fold garment bag and it worked really well for me. Plus it’s affordable.

I found this on Amazon. Not as nice as the Hook and Albert, but it's only 1/8 the price of Hook and Albert.

It's all about the garment bag once you have to pack suits.

It's a Briggs & Riley bag that came with the carry-on luggage, and I don't believe it can be purchased separately. I was on the hunt for a garment sleeve that I can add to my GR2, so I had asked the same question. I ultimately chose the Eagle Creek Travel Gear Pack-It Garment Sleeve.

Protip: bring your suit as a carry on in a garment bag. Your suit was probably delivered in one. That's what it's for. You know, every airplane has a coat closet, airplanes travel to places where it's cold and you have to walk outdoors to get to the plane, so people wear bulky coats that won't fit in overhead bins. So almost every plane has a small coat closet. Carry your bag on and ask a flight attendant to hang it up for you. That's their job.

I use something similar to this, except it has a handle on top and one on the bottom, it folds up from the middle and allows you to carry it with the handles. I believe it's made by London Fog, but I'm having trouble finding the exact one online.

Samsonite has carry on bags for suits. I have one that is kind of a messenger bag, fits a suit, a few shirts and everything needed for a weekend trip. It’s what I carry for weekend weddings and haven’t had a problem with it. It’s similar to this one

I’m in Spain so check about the carry on rules with your airline, but I haven’t had a problem taking it on board.

There are cheap suitcases that break, and then there are serious suitcases that cost way more. I do not regret my purchase of this Briggs and Riley one bit. It has an old L.L. Bean style lifetime warranty. Baggage handler threw it into the intake of a high bypass turbofan before rage quitting? That's covered. It keeps hanging clothes in one half (great for business travel) and has a normal section on the other. Whatever you get, don't get the spinner wheels. They are hard to roll long distances, outdoors, etc. and more prone to breakage because they stick out.

I tend to just ship beer to myself and carry on both ways, but my beer routine with this suitcase is as follows.

On way to destination: Hanging clothes in top half, folded clothes, all else, and an empty duffel in the bottom. Carry on.

On way home: Hanging clothes in top half, dirty clothes for padding as needed and beer in bottom. Fill previously empty duffel with remaining dirty clothes, etc. Check both bags. I used this technique recently to fit 5ish 750ml bottles from the Veil.
