🎓 Reddit experts on classic rock music
The comments and opinions expressed on this page are written exclusively by redditors. To provide you with the most relevant data, we sourced opinions from the most knowledgeable Reddit users based the total number of upvotes and downvotes received across comments on subreddits where classic rock music are discussed. For your reference and for the sake of transparency, here are the specialists whose opinions mattered the most in our ranking.
See that's the thing -- I kind of love all of it, even the so-called "crap" stuff from the decade. I love the rock stuff and the disco stuff and the soul stuff. All of it. (well, mostly)
For lesser-known soul stuff, I like the What It Is! box set. And there's some amazing stuff in the 70s-era part of the Quincy Jones box set. But as far as straight-up groups, Earth Wind & Fire and Sly & the Family Stone are where it's at for me.
Rock stuff, I have a soft spot in my heart for Big Star, but I'll take the more popular stuff, as well, like Bowie and Zeppelin and former Beatles' solo stuff, or even the so-called "lighter" Doobies or Steely Dan. And goddam if Loggins & Messina's "Sittin' In" isn't just the most blissful. And holy crap, of course there's Harry Nilsson and his entire catalogue.
But the thing I love most about the 70s is discovering all these bands that are relatively under the radar these days, or groups that artists were in before they got big. Relatively recent discoveries for me include the band Lake and Klaatu and Brian Protheroe.
But I'm honestly equally happy putting on the 1970s station and listening to Brandy or Amie or Angie Baby or pretty much whatever.
EDIT: cleaned up some links
I can't narrow down the songs and movies to 5 but I think I can take a stab at the albums. The links go to Amazon. In no particular order...
I could survive on a desert island with these 5 albums and never want for music. I might want a power supply though.
Even though my taste in music has changed considerably from back in the day, it's still probably a toss-up between The Crow and Spawn.
The Crow because I'd just got my first car and we'd all be driving to 18th birthday parties listening to this sequence of brooding-angry-brooding that just summed teenage life up perfectly ... Spawn because I thought the producers really tried to do the best job they could do. There are some fucking insanely huge names on this soundtrack. And Mansun. But still, they got such a superb mix of artists on this.
100% with you on Relayer being underrated.
I know you said you're only buying used, but Amazon has a copy of The Yes Album for $16.99 right now, I bought it a few months back and it was like $12. It's a very good pressing, maybe not the best but by no means bad.
I would also recommend you add Yessongs to your list. It was the first Yes LP I bought and I absolutely love it.
Do yourself a favor and pick up a "best of CCR" cd.
Here is a good one that's only 10 bucks.
Edit: Yes, I get it, there are multiple ways to obtain music. Just wanted to share a good album, people. Jesus...
Every album has merits (but I am a total fucking fanboy). Which songs/albums do you know you like now? They will help steer you in the right direction.
You know you will end up getting the whole catalog right? I think we are just talking about prioritization for now.
Two great compilation albums for older Floyd are Relics and Works
Two of my favorites are Dire Straits: Brothers in Arms and Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense. Great music and fantastic recordings!
Other good ones include MTV Unplugged: 10,000 Maniacs and Leonard Cohen: Live in London.
El-P is always a favorite of mine, can't go wrong with Run the Jewels and Cancer 4 Cure is excellent, too. DJ Shadow's first album would also go well with your drug theme.
Outside the modern hip hop universe, I'd also recommend Funkadelic's Maggot Brain and Parliament's Mothership Connection.
'Have A Drink On Me' and 'Let Me Put My Love Into You', in that order.
Also:
If you get a chance, see them live. It is a lesson in rock and roll. In the meantime get 'AC/DC Live: Collector's Edition'. Perhaps the greatest live recording I've ever heard; if you don't like that, you don't like rock.
Nice, thanks! This pressing is allegedly inferior to the Repertoire pressing, but it's also half the price, so...
There's also the Big Beat pressing which is priced in-between the two... just to make it nice and complicated.
There's a big thread on Steve Hoffman if anyone is interested.
Guys! Go to amazon.com
Please don't pirate.
EDIT: Looks like you've already been given a PM to the tracks. You were just looking for ways to get a free album because when I type it into Google, like this, google gives me the Amazon link to pay for his music.
Right after Life During Wartime, Byrne actually says that in the film: he raises his left hand and says: "Thank you! Does anyone have any questions?"
Perhaps you are confused by the fact that there are two versions of Stop Making Sense out on CD: the original release, with the songs somewhat out of order, and a Special New Edition that came out later, and that restores the song flow to being the same as the movie. There was also a VHS version which included Cities and Big Business/I Zimbra -- which have never shown up on any CD that I'm aware of.
Gaucho came out after Aja, right? Yeah I remember Babylon Sisters and Time out of Mind. My Rival doesn't sound familiar, but it has a nice groove.
I'm on amazon right now looking for the remasters. What is the live album you're talking about? Is this it?

Starts at $11.27 for NEW.
This is the entry I ordered from in 2014, and I got a 2000s Euro press that sounds pretty good. I cannot compare with an OP vintage press, however.
I have the 4mwb pressing - it's crap. Can you confirm this $11.56 import pressing from Westbound is an improvement? Thanks.
Some of them have
Edit: Looks like the 3 songs referred to in Kangar's post are all included, as well as rehearsal takes and some International Submarine Band songs. If you're a Gram Parson fan you need this (non-referral link, btw).
This can be found on David Gilmour's Remember That Night: Live At The Royal Albert Hall. It's a terrific concert, and I highly recommend the DVD set.
Welcome! I would recommend what are known as the Red and Blue albums, see here:

There's a bunch of different versions out there, with more and less alternate takes, e.g.:
https://www.amazon.com/Sweetheart-Rodeo-Legacy-Byrds/dp/B0000C0FHP?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0
Has 4 GP vocal tracks. My own copy has a bunch of them as well. I forget offhand if the ones marked "alternate take" are GP vocals, shared, or what.
But let's not get distracted from the most exciting point I just found out about. There's ISB tracks I've never heard! (This is crazy, GP doing pop?)
Amazon has it available for free for prime members on amazon music. It is also available for physical purchase.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Pizza-Tapes-Garcia/dp/B00004SBZ6/
This is an amazing concert! For those curious, the DVD is on Amazon for really really damn cheap.
The Crow soundtrack was awesome.
If you are looking for a compilation, then I would suggest the Blue LP 1967-1970. A great summary of the last 3 years of the band. That one and the accompanying Red LP 1962-1966, were the first two Beatle LPs I bought.
Another few soundtracks that are fantastic:
Natural Born Killers
The Crow
Donny Darko
Not to be a jerk or disrespect your post but I bought 2 in December on Amazon used for less than $5 each used. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ol/B00018TI5E/ref=mw_dp_olp?ie=UTF8&condition=all hopefully more of you can experience this amazing album.
That's a killer solo.
Steely Dan has had some AMAZING drummers work with them, my favorite is Dennis Chamber on their Alive In America live album.
Depends on the Band. [AC/DC Live] ( http://www.amazon.com/AC-DC-Live/dp/B00008BXJJ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370364710&sr=8-1&keywords=ac+dc+live ) is a LOT better than the studio recordings.
Works is better at misrepresenting a band's catalog than Echoes is, change my mind.
No order;
Battle of Mice - A Day of Nights (easily my favorite female vocalist), Zodiak - Sermons, Tool - Lateralus, Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon, and Deftones - White Pony.
I could keep going though.

|name|Funkadelic|
|about artist|Funkadelic was originally the backing band for the doo wop group, The Parliaments. The band was added in 1964, primarily for tours, and consisted of Frankie Boyce, Richard Boyce and Langston Booth. They enlisted in the army in 1966, and George Clinton (the leader of Parliament) recruited Billy Bass Nelson and Eddie Hazel in 1967, then also adding Tawl Ross and Tiki Fulwood. Due to legal difficulties between Clinton and Revilot, The Parliaments' label... (more on last.fm)|

Road tripping with my dad, after playing through all the cd's my brother and I had we asked him what did he listen to growing up. He then puts in this cd
Well it started with this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVhNCTH8pDs&ab_channel=PinkFloyd

And than I listened to this
https://www.amazon.com/Dark-Side-Moon-Pink-Floyd/dp/B000002U82
And here I am.

Now, "De-Spectered" is probably a misnomer. It's what George called it, but it's really just a remaster with the strings and horns lower in the mix, and as much reverb taken out as possible. It's not as drastic as "Let It Be: Naked," but it is a general improvement.
I don't think we can consider this solved if we can't produce an example of Steely Dan being "booed off stage". That sounds incredibly unlikely to me.
I have "Steely Dan: Alive In America" and it is blisteringly good. The idea of them being booed at all, let alone booed off stage, is crazy.

That is just from some quick searches on Amazon and cover many different generes. Local stores (I live in Toronto) also have 2xLPs for cheaper than $40, in fact I would say $40+ is an exception rather than the rule.
Where are you shopping that $40+ is the rule?
The Crow

Opinions will likely vary wildly. But, if I could only listen to one Beatles album for the rest of my life, it would be this one.

AC/DC Live
Introversion: "Brain Damage" by Pink Floyd, off Dark Side of the Moon
Extraversion: "You're The One That I Want" from the Grease soundtrack
I would add to that almost everything off "the crow" soundtrack.
Then throw some Lush, some Skinny Puppy, some Thrill Kill Kult, some Front 242, and some KMFDM in there, and youre done.
Edit: I forgot the mutherfucking Prodigy... "breathe", "firestarter", and "smack my bitch up" are all excellent driving songs.
