I'm a total noob at HA, but I went to a meet up recently where the presenter talked about the Shelly 2.5 relay with power metering. Looked pretty cool, and the Amazon web page claims integration with Home Assistant.

Tail stock looks correct too me, like joelav said you could weld a 3/8" breaker bar w/socket to the bolt head and just let it dangle.

You really should get some way to protect the motor circuit though, and give you a fighting chance to have the overloads trip if you manage to stall out the lathe (get a gouge jammed in somehow, shudder). You can buy alightswitch style on/off switch with a set of overloads in them on ebay pretty cheap. Ideally you want a magnetic starter, but I'd at least upgrade whatcha got.

Edit.. Like this one http://www.amazon.com/Square-2510Fg1-Contactor-Operator-Enclosure/dp/B000LDB5QY you still need to buy the "heaters" though.

It's a better idea to use a machine tool style safety switch, so that if you inadvertently bump it, it doesn't fire up.

There's a few styles but the gist of them is if you bump or swat them it hits off and not on, as on is guarded. A bandsaw isn't an incredibly dangerous tool, but a $10 switch is cheap insurance.

eg - this kind is sort of comically large, for table saws to shut off with your knee easily.

You want a manual transfer switch. Example: http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200653610_200653610
Make sure the rated ampacity is sufficient for your loads.

Edit: you could also use a DPDT. It may be more expensive.

It looks like in the last photo (221351) you have a damaged contactor (black wire on the left).

As a temporary fix until you can get a replacement, turn off power and clean the contacts with some sandpaper.

Here is a set of replacement contacts http://www.amazon.com/Schneider-Electric-9998PC241-Replacement-Contact/dp/B006H3VZIA/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1464577151&sr=8-4&keywords=square+d+9013fsg2

One more important thing: attic fans should have a thermal safety switch installed that will cut off power to the fan in case of fire. The last thing you want is for your attic fan to feed oxygen to your house fire. [An example of one here] (http://www.amazon.com/Solar-Safety-Switch-Natural-Light/dp/B00DO78L0W)

I want to reiterate that there is a reason attic fans are all designed to apply negative pressure to your attic. Namely, you don't want to force hot and dusty attic air into your living space. It's surprising how much air moves through unsealed ceiling penetrations (light fixtures) and down stud bays and through wall penetrations (electrical outlets).

But seriously, use a dang mosfet!

There is no switch that's rated for 60 amps, the highest rated anti-vandal/push button switches are between 3 - 5 amps. A switch that's rated for 60 amps is a lever on a circuit breaker, here's an example. Take a look here for 60 amp switches, they don't exist. Digikey is one of the biggest part vendors in the world, here let's check Mouser too, sadly doesn't exist from Mouser either. I'd implore you to to take a look at how large the 20 amp switches are, they're as big as your whole box mod. Either he did what the guys over on /r/OpenPV call "wizard math" to make it seem like the switch is rated for 60 amps, or he bought one on eBay or Amazon that the seller claimed that. The switch wouldn't heat up if it was under rated, what would happen is in a couple weeks the on and off poles will fuse together and the mod will autofire continuously until the batteries are removed. This box mod is incredibly dangerous, it doesn't even look like there's specific vents for when this mod fails, which it will invariably do unfortunately.

Here's an example of the type of switch you have. It's rated for 2 amps.
