Okay - then to start, I will recommend Oryx and Crake and Year of the Flood, both by Margaret Atwood. They're part of a trilogy, the third book is due out this fall. Atwood defines them as speculative fiction; they're set in the not-to-distant future, and follow the downfall of civilization. I like Year of the Flood better, but both are pretty awesome.

For fantasy, I really like The Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay. It's a blend of celtic mythology, fantasy, and arthurian legend. Some people don't like that it's basically an homage to LOTR, but it's one of my absolutely alll-time favourites.

For YA dystopian fiction, I'd suggest Divergent and Insurgent - also a trilogy, not sure when the third one is due out, off-hand.

One of my favourite sci-fi series is Phule's Company and the following books, by Robert Asprin. I also love Time Scout by him and Linda Evans. His writing is ridiculously clever and witty, and he's one of last century's greatest writers, in my opinion.

And finally, I love anything by Terry Pratchett - his Discworld series is amazing. So very very British and hilarious.

u/CleverlyNamedTeam · 3 pointsr/engineering

Bruhn, Niu, Roark and Niu (again) are the bibles for aerospace structures. Bruhn is always ridiculously expensive but it's hard to beat. Not sure why they won't put another edition out, everyone uses it.

Best way to learn FEA is by doing. Taking a class to understand the theory is very helpful (in my opinion). Gives the user a deeper insight into how the model is working - especially how the nodal DOFs of each type element work. Making models in "one button push" FE packages like Solidworks or ProMechanica is only so helpful. Building the models by hand or creating your own programs is the best way to develop an understanding.

If you are motivated, here is a good class with all the chapters and notes online.

Congrats on the job. Boo on moving in with your sister!

You're awesome because monkeyslut! Those monkeys are sluts!

I am odd and enjoy coloring in coloring books to de-stress. There are some funny adult coloring books that may give you a few laughs and help you chill out. Just search "adult coloring book" in Amazon; you'll see what I mean-> [here's an example] (http://www.amazon.com/Coloring-Grown-Ups-Adult-Activity-Book/dp/0452298253/ref=pd_sim_b_1) . I enjoyed the book [Unicorns are Jerks] ( http://www.amazon.com/Unicorns-Are-Jerks-coloring-exposing/dp/1477468528/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369842721&sr=8-1&keywords=unicorns+are+jerks). Also, listening to music that is uplifting to you or puts you in your "happy place". Is always a good idea.

I hope things start looking up for you. Maybe with your new job you can start saving up to move in with friends or something :)

u/antronaldo · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Does this adult fun book class as a coloring book?

You can colour it in but it also activity based...looks a lot of fun!

Great contest btw

I love my inner child!

u/Fishdontgotsnomusics · 2 pointsr/GiftIdeas

I second the prismacolors, I swear by them as an artist and an art teacher. I also suggest a battery-operated electric eraser, they are a game changer in prismacolor drawing. Here's a cheap one:

Depending on your mom's taste and sense of humor, here are 3 of my favorite off-beat coloring books (way better than just mandalas and stuff):

This crass one is my favorite

Unicorns are Jerks - funny but not offensive

[Thrill Murray, the Bill MUrray coloring book (weird but fun, lots of Wes Anderson film stuff) ] (https://www.amazon.com/Thrill-Murray-coloring-book-Coley/dp/0957490909/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1482086999&sr=1-1)

You could also consider making her your very own coloring book. One of my art students made me one that was all pictures of dinosaurs and cats riding on bicycles (my 3 favorite things). If you can't draw, it's super easy to turn photographs into drawing pages with Adobe Illustrator or similar.

You could also get her some frames so she can display her favorite completed pages.

u/Squirrellake · 3 pointsr/playwriting

Firstly, I am sure that Frozen and Elsa are copyright material, as is "Let it Go"... While I doubt someone would sue you for doing a play with kids, you may want to talk to school officials and make sure they're okay with the risk of doing so...

That said, you could easily write a script in the 'style' of Frozen. You could create as many little Elsa-clones as you'd like, provided you do not use the name Elsa...

It may be easier to do something like A Fairy's Tale (http://www.amazon.com/A-Fairys-Tale-Brian-Mitchell/dp/1605130109)

Best wishes!

u/akingrey · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This coloring book. My mom will be visiting me next week and we still love to color. (I know, corny.) I would love to surprise her with this one, should be different from our normal fare. :D

Thanks for the contest, X-Ray and Vav!

u/PainMatrix · 91 pointsr/funny

Credit to /u/yanray for making these:

>I made these crayons / took this photo... never expected to see it pop up here on Reddit. It was for a contest to win the crayons, the deadline (in a weird coincidence) is tomorrow. Proof: http://coloringforgrownups.com/post/34581772735/crayons-for-grown-ups
I'm glad Reddit likes them. I also directed the "K is for Knifeball" video that took off here not too long ago... Long story short, the crayons are a real-life version of one page from a book I co-wrote & illustrated called "Coloring for Grown-ups" - Available right now wherever fine books are sold (and also at Urban Outfitters)! This: http://www.amazon.com/Coloring-Grown-Ups-Adult-Activity-Book/dp/0452298253

u/Zombie_Twatz · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Anything by Terry Pratchett, Piers Anthony, and Douglas Adams.

My friend also wrote a couple series that are pretty good. My favorite is Jig the Goblin.

u/Velocisexual · 2 pointsr/DnD

I once played a Goblin Cleric based on Jig Dragonslayer from Goblin Quest ( http://www.amazon.com/Goblin-Quest-Jim-C-Hines/dp/0756404002 ), which is an awesome book btw. It was one of the best roleplaying experiences of my life actually.

u/ChainRepulsion · 1 pointr/AskWomen

Depends on what she likes. I bought a "Coloring for grown-ups" for my friend. She likes coloring and mean jokes.

u/insomniatica · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I love my inner child!!

Either:

Coloring for Grown-Ups: The Adult Activity Book

Or

Unicorns Are Jerks: a coloring book exposing the cold, hard, sparkly truth

Thanks for the contest!! It reminded me how much I LOVE to color! It's therapeutic for me.

Edit: I also have Between the Lines: An Expert Level Coloring Book == and == Outside the Lines: An Artists' Coloring Book for Giant Imaginations (totally stole that one from /u/chickenfriedsoup so if you pick this particular book, give it to them)

u/IICVX · 25 pointsr/AskReddit

There was a line in a Discworld novel along these lines...

Aha, found it:

>The Curious Squid were very small, harmless, difficult to find and reckoned by connoisseurs to have the foulest taste of any creature in the world. This made them very much in demand in a certain kind of restaurant where highly skilled chefs made, with great care, dishes containing no trace of the squid whatsoever.

-Terry Pratchett, Jingo

I guess this is actually more relevant to the Caviar discussion upthread.

u/officemonkey · 6 pointsr/politics

>He now heads a consulting firm that has telecommunications companies as clients.

Can anyone say conflict of interest?

>explicit assurances from the highest levels of the government that the activities in question were authorized by the president and determined to be lawful.

The executive branch can not determine if your actions are legal. That is the sole discretion of the judicial branch.

"He said it was okay" is not a defense. What's next?? "I forgot armed robbery was against the law"?!?

u/HempHouse · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This [Adult Activity Book](http://www.amazon.com/Coloring-Grown-Ups-Adult-Activity-Book/dp/0452298253/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=OWMC4I9GOHMY&coliid=I1UWBSCM62JO07/ "Adult Activity Book") would be cool for me & my boyfriend to do together. Today is our 1 year anniversary :)

Thank you for your contest shabby_paynes!

u/effeduphealer · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This coloring book is pretty awesome!

I'm finally about to start a new job, and will be able to pay my bills off way faster than planned. By doing this, I will be able to have a better life WAY sooner than expected!

The complete hitchhikers guide to the galaxy by Douglas Adams.

Funny, entertaining, and something If need be turned down and when picked back up not much has been lost with the story. The audio version is also very well done with a British reader.

amazon CD complete series

I feel like my SO makes me a better person in so many ways. Eating better, going on walks with me so I'm exercising without really thinking about it, just bringing joy to my life, etc. One way that really stands out is that from one of our first dates he pointed out that I was being negative. And he didn't just jump down my throat and say hey you're being negative! be happy! He understood why I was being negative about the issues, it was a pretty depressing one, but he pointed out that the person making me upset was just projecting all their bs on me. He did the same thing I usually do for myself when I approach a problem. I use my logic to try and figure out how to solve it, unfortunately I have a hard time doing that when people who are close to me upset me. Well what he said stuck in my head and since then a lot of drama has happened around us and even some with us, and I just think okay I'm being negative about it, use my logic to solve it, and I'm able to solve it before it drags on forever.

This is a fun item I'd love from my wish list.

I feel like a dunce, but I don't know what you mean by that.

If you were interested in the book, it's this one.

u/kendiara · 1 pointr/tipofmytongue

Couple of possibles:

Troll Fell

Goblin Quest

Knowing a bit more time-frame may help narrow it down or bring other possibles.

u/lucyintheskies · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

My favourite part of a meal is potato.

Activity: Working, as usual :(
Movie: Pan's Labyrinth or anything by Studio Ghibli (I have a bit of an addiction to anything Ghibli :3)
Book: The Bureau of Lost Souls or The Handmaids Tale
Comic Book: Sweet Tooth, Y:The Last Man, Polarity

Would love to read this

Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy

Also available are the Tertiary, Quandary and Quintessential Phases radio show from a couple of years back. It's a good listen.

However, laughing with broken ribs....hmm....maybe not.

If you're putting that on your birthday/Christmas list, you may want to ask for an 'advanced' coloring book, or you may end up with something like this.
