Need? I don't really need anything, that is why I have my wishlist, just things I may daydream about, thinking of what I could do with.
Like many in this thread, I am a college student, but I major in electricity and mathematics. One thing I am most eager to use and believe everyone should have is a staple free stapler, I got it for the upcoming semester and am terribly excited to see how it holds up.
Firstly, it will save you money from buying staples.
Secondly, it will ease your mind of wondering how many, if any staples you have left in the contraption. Additionally if you have lost or forgotten any at home, stapling something late at night after shops are long closed.
It's in Japanese, so it has to be cool by internet standards, yes? So if you want to be cool, you have to have it.
I have tested this device and I personally think it is awesome and works wonderfully for binding papers. There is, as a bonus, a viewing window so you can keep binding things and watching the process it uses, super rad.
Thank you for the contest OP and I hope you fair well at UNI.
pentel's rsvp pens are my favorite and they come in a variety of colors. i find that the different colors help me retain information when note-taking/studying in general.
a phone charger for sure. amazonbasics has cables that work really well for the iphone! amazon has a six month warranty for their amazonbasics things (i think they still do?), so if your cable frays or breaks or whatever, you can just send amazon a message and they'll replace it for you. i think that's awesome since the worst part about having an iphone is how easy the charging cables can fall apart.
also, i think carrying around a mini stapler in your backpack is a great idea. they're handy and cute. bonus: you'll be class hero when a paper is due and everyone is scrambling for a stapler.
usb flash drives are nice and handy, but i'd recommend investing in a portable external harddrive as well. the 2tb ones run about $70-$90 and they're dooooope. you didn't say what you're studying, but i'm a student who works with digital media so i'm constantly transferring large files and an external drive has been of great use. i have this one.
I buy supplies for interactive notebooks, but I was able to get spiral notebooks for .07 each at the end of the summer. I bought every notebook in the store, and I'll probably be set for the next 3 years or so. Scissors are 2 for $1 at the Dollar Tree.
Really though, if it's a requirement they need to be provided...you couldn't require a student to do homework from a textbook without giving them the book!
If you feel like you really need to use notebooks (and you definitely shouldn't have to!), as a cheap (free? assuming you have printer paper) solution-- could you have the kids make small booklets for each topic/unit? I got this booklet stapler on Amazon, it's been great (and cheap). Students could keep their booklets in a ziploc bag or something so that they still have all the information accessible. Or maybe your students could create "notebooks" with paper stapled inside a manila folder? Something like this would also work, depending on how much looseleaf they can hold! Good luck...sorry you're in this situation. It's really not your responsibility.
I just went on a hunt for this kind of thing to start my own dream job, that has my very own desk! Scrolled through and I didn't see a few of my favorites.
Who doesn't like Einstein?
For the Office Space aficionado, a little bit stealth geek =)
Here there be dragons!
Got to get the matching set. Dragons get lonely, don't you know?
All of which is the next best thing in desk decoration couture of course! Thanks for the contest, and good luck in your new job!
I got this set for myself and it is pretty nice for a beginner. I really like having a good case and all that extra stuff fit in it really well.
let's celebrate!
this is the closest but if I won I can pay the difference :D This will fit nicely on my new desk at work (OMG I HAVE A DESK <3)
I'd love this! I'm addicted to all things Tetris, and this would be perfect! If it's too much though, just skip over me. Thank you for the contest!
A saddle stitch book is the most basic type of bind. You basically grab a stack of papers, fold it in half (a bone folder helps with this step) and staple.
A long reach stapler is great for this type of bind because if you're making a wide book you don't have to crease and bend your notebook to get to the center.
You can also use thread to bind the book together and for that you'll need an awl. (see diagram) A punching cradle makes this method easier.
Bonus: If you want to make the edges even and professional looking you can chop it in a book guillotine. The drawback to this is that your book won't be a standard size because you'll be shaving fractions of a inch off.
You can buy this on Amazon here:
https://www.amazon.com/vertical-horizontal-Stapler-HD-10V-Hotchi-Kuru/dp/B000O9WRYO
Just note that it uses #10 mini staples and they're not always available at your local shops so you are probably better off getting them online as well.
It also has a limit of 7 cm from the edge of the paper to where you want to staple, so it doesn't work best with booklets that are bigger than A5.
Despite those conditions, it's a pretty neat stapler to have; it helped me through quite a few school projects.
I bought this at a bookstore in Hong Kong.
I'm fascinated by them. Think of how many other omnipresent 20th century office products have simply vanished - rolodex, rotary phones, filing cabinets, typewriters, paper maps, the 'attache'.
Today we can type a multi-page document on a personal computer thousands of times more powerful than what we used to send the first man to the moon. We can wirelessly transmit it to a laser printer and have that document printed for mere pennies. In seconds! But for all the alternative paper-binding methods of the last few decades (like this stupid thing), you'll still probably use a regular old stapler to keep those sheets together.
That 70 year old stapler can do the same job as today's stapler. But thanks to the callous disregard with which our fickle minds determine a serviceable object to be "obsolete", these gorgeous simple machines slowly disappeared. And the flimsy, brightly colored, plastic cubicle ornaments they call "staplers" today are just as likely to be lost at the back of a desk drawer as they are to be tossed out as extraneous.
That 70 year old stapler is timeless. It does the job, and it does it with a little more class. That, I believe, is the spirit of BIFL.
I say bring on the staplers.
Nice piece of writing there. You made me smile on a bad day, thanks.
However, you're looking at the wrong staplers. I have this, and its little brother. 100 sheets capacity and 25 sheet capacity respectively. They work differently than most. As you push down on the handle they store energy in a spring. When you've got it down all the way, it fires the staple through the stack of papers. 100 sheets is easy.
Just know that Best Buy may have better prices at times.
You wouldn't show them this ad to price match of course
http://www.amazon.com/Office-Impressions-Economy-Strip-Stapler/dp/B0087HVTYY
Coin Flip Assortment on Amazon, can also search for specific sizes by just searching Mylar 2x2. Should also get a Flat Clinch Stapler I bought the linked one and love it for stapling flips.
Happy Cake Day!
You didn't mention a dollar limit, so I'm not sure which one to link, so here's like five. One Two Three Four Five
Number five actually has the word "Cake" in it!
Stapler and staples.
3 Hole puncher
Powerstrip, this is a more subtle item, but once he sees it, he'll realize you went all out.
Pink is the new black.
Thanks for the contest! Will you post before and after pictures??
pretty sure they need this 5000 dollar stapler: http://www.amazon.com/Office-Impressions-Economy-Strip-Stapler/dp/B0087HVTYY/ref=pd_sim_sbs_hi_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=1RAHATPA3AZXW7NJYFHX
https://www.amazon.com/Kokuyo-Harinacs-Staple-free-Stapler-Without/dp/B00O9N1BHA
(Not one here but similar)
It's more or less a crimper as staplers technically make holes.
They are neat
I have a swingline 747 but I never use it. This stapler is much nicer to use: http://www.amazon.com/PaperPro-Prodigy-Stapler-Black-Silver/dp/B000GGY9LY/
Decorate already!
You need:
These pens
Some Jesus Sticky notes
A Banana for scale
A Cup o Grass Pens
What's that? A Dragon Stapler? STFU.
I'd like a GC to buy my own grass pen cup. (it's 15).
I use a tiny flat stapler for mine. Less than $6 on Amazon and it fits nicely with the rest of my supplies. Swingline Tot Stapler with Built-In Staple Remover, Pre-Packed with 1000 Swingline Standard Staples, Blue (S7079172) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008DQYCFW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_dFvbzb3K3S8R1
My mom used to use a staple free stapler
I'm late, but I've started keeping a small stapler in my backpack for projects etc that have to be turned in as a physical copy incase I forgot to staple it at home. The one I linked comes with like 1000 staples, and holds a couple stacks in the bottom
Plus PAPER CLINCH Compact Green Heavy Duty, Light, Staple Free Stapler (31251) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KYP2OYQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_BftIDb64N124T
That uses a different method, but if you look for Japanese staplers on Amazon you should find a few.
Have you thought about just doing it zine/booklet-style? Printer-paper size folded in half and held together by staples? You could do it yourself for just the cost of the prints and a special stapler.
Not OP but this is the set without any extras at a bargain $10. This is the set with other bits and pieces $14 so worth it if you need any of the other bits.
If you're UK, this is the bare set for a paltry £3.09 - how unusual to find something cheaper in the UK than in the USA!
Here's all the files you'll need.
For the paper, I just use standard 8.5x14" Legal paper. My printer has a duplexer, but it won't duplex legal, so I had to do a manual duplex (flipping the paper over by hand and printing everything again). The cover is 65lb Bristol Board and was manually duplexed as well.
My books have 10 pages in them, which is made by two sides of 5 sheets of paper. The pages print 2-up per page and they are cut down the middle long-ways, that way when you fold them in half, the score sheet appears on the front page and the notes page ends up on the back of the score sheet. 5 sheets of paper make two books. I have a paper cutter that can cut the full length of the legal sheet, but if you don't, you can simply use a straight edge and a razor blade, or if you have a regular paper cutter, you can just fold the pages in half on the short edge, then cut them in half on the long edge.
Once everything is stapled, I round the corners using a corner cutter. Here's a cheaper corner cutter, but it can't handle the whole book at once. I have both of those corner cutters, and the cheaper one comes in very handy for other projects I do.
In that link is both Trap and Skeet books. I have a doubles sheet, but I need to finish the cover. Once I get done with it, it'll be in that link as well.
This is the older version: (I have one, it's cool, it works)

The original review
Amazon has long reach staplers, I bought one last week for 5.99
This stapler. It's at $34 now. What a bargain.
The one on the left is a staple from a flat clinch stapler. It staples flatter. I use one of these.

Does this stapler qualify?
For those saying that they prefer the notebooks, get one of these for $10 and make your own: http://www.amazon.com/Sparco-Stapler-Capacity-Standard-SPR01316/dp/B001B0GWKU/ref=sr_1_5?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1395679089&sr=1-5
Not in the class so I’m not entirely sure if this is exactly what you’re talking about, but here’s a staple-free stapler . Other staple-free staplers are available.
