Hey guys, I'm guessing this question will be overlooked now, but if so I'll try posting in tomorrow's thread.

Anyway, I'm interested in getting myself an okay starter camera. I don't know much about photography, but I'd like to learn. I'd also just like a decent camera of my own to take with me if I travel in the next few years. In the meantime, I'd love to be able to take some really nice pictures of, well, my cat. And my family, I guess. Right now I'm really interested in the Nikon L330, because a local shop is selling their display model for $150 Canadian, (where I'm located, eh?) which suits my budget well and seems to be a great price. My budget is basically under $200 CAD, but assume I can get a pretty good deal of at least 25% off.

Main question is: does the Nikon L330 qualify as a "superzoom" that's warned against in your buyer's guide? And even if it is a bad superzoom, might it be worth it anyway if I can grab it for $150? It's listed as a top-seller on Amazon and people seem to love it. If I should really stay away from the L330, what should I be looking at instead?

Thanks!

I've recently taken up photography as a hobby. r/photography can be a little pretentious, but the resources linked on the side are generally pretty helpful.

Granted, there is a bit of a startup fee, whether that's buying a point and shoot with manual controls, a bridge camera, or springing for a full-blown DSLR. I started with a Panasonic DMC-LX5 which is a very, very good point and shoot, but I recently have been using my dad's Nikon D40x that he never uses since I felt increasingly silly looking into the screen instead of a viewfinder. Learning about exposure and being able to shoot in full-manual mode is incredibly rewarding.

To improve my photography, I plan to take a picture every day for at least 100 days. Having a guideline really helps motivate me to get out and shoot.

There are a lot of good books out there like the Tom Ang Digital Photography books, which are good technical information about exposure or The Photographer's Eye and its sequels for composition. Recently I've been reading The Passionate Photographer by Steve Simon, which is an incredible photo essay/photojournalism book that is my favorite photography book so far, and has inspired me to start taking more photojournalistic style pictures.

>would you recommend anything in 4k? I may heighten my budget to 1k

u/l3eOriginal - if you want a 4K camera with LOG gamma and 10-bit recording for less than $1000, I recommend a $785.41 used Panasonic FZ2500 with a 1" sensor and a 20x built-in zoom lens with the $97 V-LOG upgrade.

Although this camera records 8-bit internally, it outputs 10-bit via HDMI - so (when budget permits) you can buy a 4K Atomos recorder and get results like this:

Newbie here. I am looking to purchase my first nice camera. I've done some research, but I'm a little overwhelmed with information and was hoping /r/photography could help me out. Feel free to call me Jon Snow, because I know absolutely nothing. ^((This is me trying to be funny...is it working?))

What I'm looking for:

I will be traveling abroad for a year, so I am looking for a great camera that is light weight, takes high quality pictures (Not grainy or super digitized looking), has high quality zoom, good battery life, and records decent videos. I want to be able to point and shoot, but also have manual features to play around with. Since I will be living in a very densely populated city, I would like a camera that is able to capture action with limited blur (so I'm thinking a camera with lots of shutter speed options). From my research, I think I would like to try my hand at a DSLR camera. My budget is $400.

So far, I've thought about purchasing The Canon PowerShot SX50, The Nikon D3200 with 1 lense, The Olympus 14-Megapixel 40x Optical-Zoom Digital Camera(SP-820), or The Sony a3000. Have you guys had any experiences with these cameras? What camera would you recommend for a traveling newbie?

Photography and Beer

I know I know, no empty beer bottles, but I have a full glass of one of my favorite beers that I happened to run into today at the liquor store in a glass from the Dogfish Head brewery that I go to once a year. Beer wasn't just a hobby for me, I worked in the industry for 5 years, brewed for 4, and have been to at least 50 breweries. I've had great times with good friends drinking and brewing beer, including winning some local contests. Oh did I mention I'm a Cicerone and passed the BJCP exams? Yeah, beer was more than a hobby to me before I left the industry.

The other looks like a point and shoot camera, but it's actually a high-end Ricoh GR-ii with a high quality fixed lens and an APS-C sensor that you'd find in a DSLR. I love it so much as a great walk around when I don't feel like lugging my DSLR around.

Anyway, that's where I spend my money outside of cigars!

Hey there! I am a photographer who has my own media business, and I am getting more into the realm of exploring and practicing concert photography. I have been credentialed at a few events/shows that allowed me to use my DSLR and some great lenses, but most of the time I am in situations where I am not credentialed and can't take the DSLR, but still want to practice in the setting and get some great shots.

For about 8 months I've been using a Canon Powershot SX740 at shows, and it's been pretty okay for the most part. However, I am finding that at shows where I am WAY back, it's most definitely harder to get some good or even decent shots because of how the zoom works (I only go up to the digital zoom, I never use it) and how small the sensor is (1/2.3 inch I believe). I am exploring some other options of similar compact cameras that have TV or action modes, have decent sensors and zooms, that I could get away with taking into almost any show/venue. I have a few that I am looking into/considering (list below) but as I am more versed with the DSLR world and am not too familiar with technical aspects (especially how they change depending on the camera/format), I figured asking some more experienced professionals would be the best route.

Any suggestions or feedback is appreciated!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_T90

(

The T90 is incompatible with EOS (The lens system on modern Canon cameras)

You can use an adapter, but it won't be as good.

If you're going to adapt lenses, I think the Nex system is best, because they have peak focusing which is fucking awesome. Other camera systems should get this in a few years... in fact they could get it from a firmware update tomorrow.. but for some reason nobody else is implementing it :(

With this adapter and a Nex 5 you could use your old FD lenses quite well... (Nex 5 is a slightly older model, the Nex 5N is the newest version, but it's not actually that much better, the old one is still good) it seems slightly out of your price range, but I see them on sale second hand quite often, so if you keep your eye out on craigslist/gumtree/etc. you could get lucky. Or you could just go for the Nex 3 (I think this would be best, since you should have some kit lenses with autofocus, manual is fun, but it's better to go out and take photos and not worry about fiddling around with manual lenses.....)

Most people on here don't know that I have a disease I found out about last year that affects both my esophagus, stomach and overall health. When I found out about it I made the biggest significant changes in my life. First and foremost after smoking for almost 10 years I quit cold turkey and never looked back. I was also only a social drinker but decided to never drink again. The third change I had to make was to cut out foods that irritated this disease and lose weight. I hadnt been able to lose weight since having my first daughter because of a few significant medical issues including a broken jaw, sprained food, bruised hip, and the disease I'm talking about. Losing weight would not only make me feel better but minimize symptoms and make me feel better. Anyway, long story short, this disease was the reason my husband and I decided to have our 2nd baby sooner than later. Prior to getting pregnant I lost a decent amount of weight, gained minimal during my pregnancy (due to eating healthy), but here I am now.

Tomorrow I have my next endoscopy so this contest and start date are that much more significant to me. I'm continuing on the path I set for myself after I found out about this stupid thing. If its going to attack me I'm going to attack it from every direction. So I declare that I'm raging war on this thing and making myself better in all forms.

-food: I declare that over the coarse of the next 6 weeks I will be eating no fast food. I rarely eat it but I can count once or twice a week where I eat something absolutely horrible for me whether it be a hot dog or taco bell. I will try new foods and recipes that are healthy for me and my family or make variations to our classic recipes in order to be healthier. I will step it up with my healthy eating so that at least at the end of this challenge I will have formed a better habit for myself.

-stress and happiness: one of the things that affects me in a bad way is stress. something that makes me really happy is art. I declare that I'm going to produce one piece of art a day. Now you're thinking 'well hey cthulhu you just had your 2nd baby and this may be a big challenging with two little ones, two dogs, and a house to take care of'. I'm not setting myself up to fail here. I'm not expecting to paint the mona lisa. Whether its a doodle or a painting I will work on something every day. Also I will try meditation. I've tried it a couple of times without really following any direction but its something I think is worth giving another try to see if I can relax to hopefully rid myself of some unnecessary anxiety. Third, I will stop going from 0 to 60 in .2 seconds. I need to relax a bit and tell myself that its not worth being angry or unhappy.

-overall health: I couldn't work out while pregnant due to some complications. As of today I should've been able to start working out again but a couple of days ago my incision decided to re-open. So for now I need to follow doctors orders and take it easy. I really, really need to listen to this or I wont get better. For the first time in a long time I need to take it easy. This has never been easy for me. I wanted to start climbing stairs and doing laundry a couple days post op and I would've if I could have. I'm not sure if at all I will be able to work out during this challenge but if I do I'm going to start with some yoga and walking just to slowly build myself back up. Either way I'm going to make sure that I take my medication for my stomach daily. I have to take it a couple of times a day and occasionally I'll forget or it'll get late and I'll already be in bed and decide to skip it until the morning.

I posted awhile back about upgrading from a point and shoot to a used four thirds for food photography. You all were super helpful, and I'm looking to make a decision in the next few days, so I thought I'd ask again about the options I'm looking at. I'm basically looking for under $200, with a lens included in that. Amazon would be ideal, because I have a gift card.

I have a few different PENs in my cart (E-PM1, E-PL1, E-PL2, E-PL3) as well as a Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2 and a Sony Alpha Nex-3.

I'm not married to those models, they're just the ones I found in the price range. I'm especially wondering: would the increased resolution of the NEX be noticeable? And even though they're all four thirds, do some have bigger/better sensors than others? Any advice or alternate recommendations much appreciated.

Edit: I do care about it being able to do video.

u/smarfmachine · 3 pointsr/AskPhotography

There have been some great suggestions here, but I'll add another thought:

For a first 'real' camera, I'd seriously recommend looking into the Fuji X100F. It's an absolute bargain for what you'll be able to achieve. Since it's packing an integrated lens, the ~$1,300 you'll spend includes everything you need to start making great shots very soon without committing to a full DSLR system (and the lens addiction that comes with it). And, because it's a fixed lens, you'll get very good at composition quickly.

The full manual controls feel like the old 35mms I learned to shoot with, and the images it produces can be simply spectacular.

For a more budget-friendly alternative, its predecessor -- the X100T -- can be bought used for $350-750, depending on condition, and is 90 percent as good.

I own many cameras and 20 years' worth of lenses and accessories, but my X100 is the one that most often ends up in my bag while traveling.

Hello Everyone! I need advice on buying a camera. Please and Thank you in advance! I am going to Thailand for my honeymoon in April. I have a 7 year old Samsung Point & Shoot that is very slow. And I don't want to rely on my phone to take pictures. So therefore I want to buy a new camera. I want something that takes good quality pictures, Zoom really is not THAT important to me IF it takes a lot away from the quality of the image. I also want to take HD video as well. I have looked at the Buyers Guide and it seems a lot of the cameras that I am interested in fall into the "Super Zoom" Category, (such as the SX-700) which seem to be limited in picture quality if I understand it correctly (Correct me if i am wrong). I am looking to spend about $299. Is there anything in between the S-100 and S-120? I don't need to stick with Canon, if someone has some good recommendations i would love to hear them.

Have you ever heard of the Ricoh GR? It is the size of a point-and-shoot, but has basically the same large sensor as the Nikon D7000, along with a good f/2.8 lens and full manual controls. I use a DSLR but I really want to get one for the high quality and portability.

The best part is, if you decide to stick with photography then you can keep the Ricoh as a backup because it is quite an excellent camera, and much more low-profile.

I am close to a phone upgrade, but I am considering getting a small camera as well... Maybe this guy?

Is it worth getting a really nice phone with a really nice camera? I am a very amateur photographer and would love to explore it more with something a bit more mobile than my DSLR.

Opinions?

[FOR SALE]: Canon PowerShot SX30 IS - $100

It's a point and shoot camera with pretty awesome zoom, great condition. The screen does a nifty pop out/rotational thing so not only is it protected from scratches, but you can move it to pretty much any angle you need to take your shot, including selfies. Comes with battery (still good) and charger, and I could probably dig up the manual if I needed to.

Have a sampling of pictures taken on a Peru trip a couple of years ago with this very camera. It's done us well, but I picked up a mirrorless camera the wife's Christmas gift this year so we'd have something a little more compact to take hiking and whatnot, so it's time for this guy to go.

I'm thinking of buying a camera. I'm not a photographer or anything, just a normal picture taking guy. I would like, however, to make some quality pictures while I'm at it.

I found 3 cameras inside my price range that seem good from what I can read, and according to most of the reviews the Nikon Coolpix L820 seems to be the better choice. I would like, however, to ask your opinion.

These are my three options

Hi everyone. Noob here.

I just had a son and I'm looking to upgrade from my Moto X phone to an actual camera ha ha.

Looking for something in the $100-$200 price range that would be a significant upgrade from my camera phone. I don't want to drop $200 for a tiny quality upgrade. My phone takes decent photos.

Anyway, been looking on Amazon. Saw a couple that might work and that seemed like good deals (1) (2). Was looking for opinions on them from you guys as well as possibly suggestions for other cameras in the same range. If you were in my position, with a newborn son and your only camera was a phone, and you had $200, what would you get? (Oh also, the cheapest DSLR I can find is like $300. Would it be worth it to spend the extra $? $300 is probably the absolute highest I can go, would prefer $150-$200 but also don't want to put a price on the memories of my newborn son...I'm sure you understand).

Thanks!

Hi guys! I'm currently looking for a ~200$ digital camera, I looked up a lot of sites, and most of the sellers featured the Nikon Coolpix L840 ( http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-COOLPIX-Digital-Camera-Optical/dp/B00T85P56C ). I compared it with every camera in this range price and always came up as a winner. I will travel soon, and want to take good pictures about my trip. Should I go with it? Please feel free to say other options too. I prefer the DSLR body cameras. Thanks in advance.

u/NoMoreShinesBilly · 1 pointr/Standup

For what you want, I think $300-500 is way too much. It sounds like you just want clear image with decent audio? I personally use an old point-and-shoot from 2008. The footage can get grainy depending on the lighting, but the audio records fine. This is just reference for myself though, I don't send this out to bookers. I think even an iPhone 5 can record sets pretty well.

Check this point and shoot $88

Go youtube test footage for certain camera models to compare. If you just want clear footage with decent audio, you can do so with a tiny camera with a budget of $150 or less. $300-$500 is a cheap DSLR, maybe too much for what your needs are.

u/finaleclipse · 3 pointsr/photography

/u/keanex is making sure you're not blowing money on something that might not benefit you if you're not willing to learn how to use the camera. If you're throwing $800 into a camera that you leave on Auto the whole time, you're not getting your money's worth, and you may as well stick with the $150 camera.

I can get better results with something like this than, say, my mom could with something like this because I'm much more familiar with using cameras while my mom would just throw it on Auto and hope for the best.

Also, I don't see anywhere where you've mentioned what you'd like to take photos of. Some cameras (Ricoh GR II that I linked) will be a lot like your phone camera: no zoom, but the tradeoff is that it's small and performs wonderfully in lower-light situations. If you're looking to punch into stuff that's far away, the RX10 system can do that, but it's a physically larger and heavier camera. The RX100 is the middle-ground lineup: you get some zoom and the size is around the size of the Ricoh, but the lower-light performance isn't as good. The right camera for the job is going to depend on what your goals are.

My boyfriend and I would be going to Carolina Beach, NC. It's my sanctuary. Staying in a little beach front house, off of the boardwalk, not far from all the shops and delicious restaurants. Its the best, non-touristy little town. They have an amusement park, that is spread out all over the town, with rides and games sprinkled between shops and great places to grab food and drinks.

Im actually going in May, the weekend of Memorial Day, and I cannot wait. Im daydreaming about it almost every day. Looking up places to see and eat at, and things to do. Today I found that theres a place not far from Wilmington where you can go and watch for wild horses. I will take my camera and sit on the beach for hours, waiting to see them.

u/RawPacket · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Looks like these are going for between $260-$350 on eBay. If you do sell it, you'll probably be looking to sell in that range, unless you're a good up-seller ;) Good luck on the choice/sell!

Good reviews on Amazon.

u/Pepperpwni · 2 pointsr/photography

Renting a good camera doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to get good pictures; how good you are with a camera and how much you are willing to learn are the most important factors. If you're looking into a DSLR then you need to take time to learn the camera and what settings to use when before you depart. Additionally, you'll probably need to get a better lens for it as well (whether renting or buying).

I guess what im trying to say is if you want a DSLR you need atleast a few weeks learning it + $1000 entry cost if purchasing, if you go for the low end model (Rebel XS body and, lets say, Tamron 18-270mm 3.5-6.2 VC Lens with rebate) and Understanding Exposure (http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Exposure-3rd-Photographs-Camera/dp/0817439390/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1310284264&sr=8-1 ) is a highly recommended book for learning how to get started.

I don't know renting costs near you.

If you're looking for something less sophisticated but still want some power behind your punch look into something like the SX30IS (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-SX30IS-Digital-Optical-Stabilized/dp/B0041RSPR8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1310284110&sr=8-1) or http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-SX130IS-Stabilized-3-0-Inch/dp/B003ZSHNG8/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1310284168&sr=8-10

u/jseliger · 3 pointsr/photography

I'm still trying to figure out why the D50 and D70 are so similarly priced

Cameras appear to lose their value more slowly over time, and eventually reach about ~$200, which is about as low as you'll find a working dSLR.

So my question is would the extra $100 or so be worth it for the DSLR/Lens over the point and shoot or would the quality of the images be too little to notice the difference

Depends on what you're trying to do. A modern point and shoot will probably offer video and, possibly, better low-light performance in some circumstances. A DSLR with a 50mm prime will offer much better bokeh, decent low-light performance, better flash performance (if you buy a flash), and, probably, more manual controls (for, say, very long or very short shutter speeds), as well as manual focus (if that becomes important).

If I were in your shoes, I'd probably try to stretch for a Canon s95 or s90 (about $250 used or refurb'ed). But then, I value the portability; if you value the other features (especially the ability to produce bokeh in pictures of people), an older dSLR will serve you better.

u/blaurot · 1 pointr/photography

Would buying a Canon SX530 be a good idea? I like it because it's cheap and has great optical zoom (I like taking photos of birds).

A little background info: I'm a poor college student (redundant, of course) taking a beginners' level digital photography class. I'd love to turn it into a proper hobby, so maybe a DSLR would make more sense for when I'll want new lenses down the road, but I can't see myself being able to afford much for at least a few years.

Any advice would be appreciated.

u/trikster2 · 2 pointsr/photography

If you have good lighting one of the cheap super zooms such as canon's SX50 or whatever the nikon/pentax equivalent is are ok for this sort of thing and would cost less than a lens for the A6000. I got my dad the SX50 for his birthday a few years ago and he's always emailing me nice pictures of the birds at his feeders.

search for birds on the amazon user reviews will give you a lot of folks with similar experience:

Hello, I am looking to buy my first real camera. My intentions are for just general photography and backyard wild life. I dont have a specific budget per say, I am more looking into the appropriate camera without over buying for my needs.

As an example, my sister in law has this [camera] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009B0MZ1M/ref=psdc_330405011_t1_B00M0QVTOS) which works really well for her, and when I have tried it, it worked well enough. It did feel a little slow when taking pictures, but that could have been the resolution she has it set for.

My main focus will be family pictures and some birds in the backyard my phone cant quite focus on.

If i can get away with a $200 camera i'd be more than happy, but if say, a $300 camera would be leaps and bounds better, im open to that.

I was thinking about this one and wanted to check here first before I made a purchase

I do not want to spent >$500.

u/Fafoah · 2 pointsr/photography

The new Ricoh GR just came out at $800 if you want a camera that can still fit in your jeans pocket. Its pretty much the same size as your S100 (A tiny tiny bit bigger all around but still jeans pocket worthy), but it has an APSC sized sensor and a 28mm f/2.8 equiv lens. Seems like a perfect lens for Street, Landscapes, and Cityscapes.

u/yesimalex · 3 pointsr/photography

Canon S95 can be had for around 250 I believe.

Oly E-p1 about 200 with lens

Sony Nex 3 about 350 ish

Fuji S4200 A bit cheaper still

Hard to narrow it down any with the only known criteria being sub 500 dollars. But the above are all (in my opinion) very good cameras for the money. I'm a fan of buying used because you can get a little bit more for your money since digital stuff just depreciates like crazy.

I think for an upgraded P&S the Nikon is a solid camera as well. You can nab it used for a pretty deep discount.

The wide angle fixed lense on the GoPro creates a fisheye effect and also has no zoom, optical or digital. Something like this may be nice. It looks like it would easily fit in a coat pocket. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00I8BIBCW/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1417394569&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX200_QL40

u/dreyesceron · 1 pointr/videography

It really depends on the type of video you shoot, what you intend to make out of it and create in the end.

The GH5 can do some excellent photography so it depends on how often you plan to use that side of what the GH5 offers.

The X1000 is sweet for outdoor video and sports but it's definitely less appealing on the Photo side with a bulky body like that.

I would also recommend looking at the FZ2500 and comparing that which features aspects of both the GH5 and X1000 at a lower cost such as the built-in ND filter, built-in zoom lens, V-LOG and 4K shooting at a smaller budget.

u/TygerWithAWhy · 1 pointr/videography

Sweet. Do you use it for still photography as well? Panasonic also makes a camera geared toward videotographers, the FZ2500. Is the G series of higher quality, or is it just preference?

That is the last of my questions. You have fulfilled more than I could ask :)

[Nikon Coolpix] (http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-COOLPIX-Digital-Camera-NIKKOR/dp/B00HQ4W3OE/ref=dp_ob_title_ce) I have the older L810 model. It takes great pictures and great videos. Also quite durable, I once was going down a very steep hill and dropped it. It tumbled for well over 100 feet down the hill before a tree kindly stopped it for me. Camera turned right on with no issues.

I was actually going to recommend the LX3, but then I saw your post (I was not aware of the LX5, it must be relatively new). Amazon has it for $421, that's a great price considering the LX3 is still $388

u/InvisibleJiuJitsu · -1 pointsr/videography

take a look at the Panasonic ZS100 on Amazon (referral link)

it has a bigger one inch sensor than the canon, better lowlight performance, better LCD screen, better colours and dynamic range for capturing detail, can be charged by USB, has comepletely silent shooting, and it has an electronic viewfinder. Very good option to consider

u/ireallygottausername · 1 pointr/photography

How does the IQ of something like https://www.amazon.com/Fujifilm-X100F-APS-C-Digital-Camera-Silver/dp/B01N33CT3Z compare to Canon L lenses like the 24-70 line?

To save everyone some work, it's a 24mp aps-c sensor with a 35mm focal length, so the primary question is about image quality. We can easily calculate that the photo range this covers is 35*1.6~56mm prime, and it's fully open at f/2.

u/rainbowmushr00m · 1 pointr/birding

A Nikon Coolpix L820. It's an older point-and-shoot but it's held up pretty well over the years. There are newer versions of it out now though that may be worth the extra bucks.

u/recaotcha · 5 pointsr/artemiskitten

A higher quality camera would make a massive difference, that and learning how to use it/lighting.

Something like a bridge camera might be your best bet because it's half way between a point and shoot and DSLR meaning it gives you a certain level of manual control but it's not as much as a pain in the ass as a fully manual camera.

Also the price point is a lot cheaper, something like the Canon Powershot SX60 would be a good option.

Its $450 which would put you in the range of an entry level DSLR

So something like a Canon SX530 or a Nikon Coolpix L340

might be a better option and more affordable.

u/jamaicanbeercan · 2 pointsr/photography

Have a look at a Ricoh GR

I bought one because its a compact camera but its image quality rivals, or betters, the cameras similar to the ones you've listed comparison here

It has 16 megapixel, which it very good for a small camera, and it has a good sized APSc sensor. It has fast shutter speeds for a moving baby subject and it has a pop up flash.

I'mm sorry to say it you won't get anything better than a moderately recent phone camera for that range. better to save up.

At around 300 USD you can start getting something decent. You can buy an old Sony Nex 3 for around 300 USD new and probably less used.

https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Digital-18-55mm-F3-5-5-6-Interchangeable/dp/B003MPOLX2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1524840091&sr=8-3&keywords=sony+nex+3

That's a good beginner interchangeable lens camera, the kit lens gives you several options and you can build up your collection over time for more specialized lenses.

u/some_random_kaluna · 1 pointr/Journalism

That is seriously fucked up.

OP, this is an $80 Sony W800. It's good when keeping a low profile; just carry it in your pocket and snap some photos or take video when you can.

And this is the Sony Alpha A6000 for $450. This is supposedly the new standard for National Geographic photographers and everyone else; it does everything really expensive digital cameras can do.

Both of these are wi-fi capable and a hell of a lot cheaper than an iPhone or whatever. They'll also take much, much better photos and video for publication.

Second, don't sweat your co-worker. Soft news becomes hard news if you find the right angle, and the people you interview for someone's birthday or Veteran's Day party become the sources who give you a lead on the triple homicide that happened yesterday. Work on improving your craft and hang around the people who like you.

Third, just be nice to her. It'll help her and your mood.

u/phloating_man · 1 pointr/videography

I'd recommend a point and shoot super zoom camera that also does video like these...

  • Canon PowerShot SX50 (~$350 USD, 50x zoom, 24-1200mm, 1080p24)
  • Canon PowerShot SX60 (~$500 USD, 65x zoom, 21-1365mm, 1080p60)

As an amateur photographer with a nice DSLR kit, that drives me insane. I remember showing some people at work this picture and that's all I heard, "Wow, your camera is AWESOME!!". Another guy said "Of course it a good picture, that's like a $2000 camera isn't it?"

I think on my next trip out scouting for streams I'll take my Powershot S90 instead. I'd like to see their faces when I tell them I took the pictures with point and shoot (albeit one with manual controls).

I'm looking at these two cameras: Should I go with one of them, or stick with my iPhone for the time being, until I am taking a certain number of photos a year?

u/stupid_horse · 1 pointr/Cameras

The feature the Galaxy S6 has over most compact cameras is a wide aperture lens, which lets you see better in the dark and get a shallower depth of field. Part of what allows it to be a wide aperture while also being very compact and relatively affordable is the fact the it's a prime lens, meaning that it only covers a single focal length and thus can't zoom in and out at all. Unfortunately there's very few compact cameras with lenses like this, especially affordable ones, though I suppose you never mentioned a budget so that part may or may not be an issue for you. You may want to consider something like a Ricoh GR II or a Sony RX100.

u/pajam · 2 pointsr/OkCupid

The shoe camera is just a cheap point and shoot (cheap as in ~$400). The Canon PowerShot SX50 HS

Although I blurred the background since I had a personal e-mail account opened on the screen and my name was on there. So that post-effect Photoshop blur might make it look nicer because that is causing a possible faux Depth of Field look.

The main photo was taken in studio with a Canon EOS 70D ~$1000 for the body alone. Coworker took the photo as it's a camera for work. Although I do a lot of video, etc. in my free time as well. I'm likely buying the Panasonic GH3 soon.

My husband and I are looking for the same! We currently have a Nikon DSLR that we used while travelling through France last year. And while it took absolutely beautiful pictures, we want to buy a smaller camera to bring on our upcoming domestic US vacation and our Caribbean cruise. This decision is based purely on the size of the camera and not wanting to take out the DSLR at certain times just for a quick shot or two. We still LOVE our DSLR and use it all the time at home. I have been searching and I think I have narrowed it down to two cameras, either the Lumix DMC-ZS60 or the Lumix DMC-ZS100. We are leaning towards the ZS100, but hesitant because of the price tag in comparison to features. The main feature we wanted that both have is the capability to shoot in RAW, so I guess either one would work. Still undecided I suppose. Hopefully you get some other recs!

u/I_am_MagicMike · 2 pointsr/caseyneistat

After watching the video you linked, I cancelled the cheap one I got the one here described in the video, about $70 more, but it's the one casey uses so it must be decent quality. One question though, the video said casey uses this Canon PowerShot S120 for quicker and easier shooting, does it have the same auto focus technology that the Canon EOS 70D has?

u/unshift · 3 pointsr/photography

i would only recommend either the Canon S95 or the Panasonic Lumix LX5.

i have the s95 and so far as point and shoot cameras go, it is excellent. i like that i get various controls (aperture priority, shutter priority, manual mode) and the 720p video has stereo audio. from my research the LX5 is feature-for-feature similar but with a slightly wider lens and obviously different ergonomics.

Nawww, adding a 50/1.8 is cheap and allows for low light if he goes the entry-level DSLR route.

For his use, I might suggest a Ricoh GR II, which has a large sensor (same size as consumer Digital SLRs) and a 28/2.8 lens. Looks like a point and shoot, but has the controls and image quality of a DSLR. Pack that and a small tripod and he's good.

One last question, comparing the camera you linked and the Lumix LX5. Which would you recommend, as you seem to have a lot of knowledge about cameras?

Yes it is!

Awesome pic. I love sunspots - too bad there haven't been to many lately. As a ham radio operator, it hurts (limits long-distance radio contacts).

I bought a Canon SX530HS a few months ago on sale, currently $250 at Amazon. Here's a moon pic I took when I got it. ISO 100, F/6.5, 1/80 sec. It was racked out at 215mm or '50x' optical. I actually had to keep tweaking the tripod to keep the moon in frame since it was moving so quickly. I haven't tried with my SLR, but given the size of the sensors in these new cameras and the size of the lenses, I seriously doubt my 200mm lens would get anywhere near this level of magnification.

Now to see if I can find a filter or piece of viewing film that will fit over the lens!

Canon PowerShot SX530 HS. It's a good little starter camera, step up from a point and shoot, lots of settings you can adjust manually if you want.

I did all my editing in GIMP, a free photo editing program similar to Photoshop.

If you mean the exif data, I can dump that so you can see what my settings were at when I took the photo.

I have this guy and, well, my android phone camera. I don't think either of those options will work, but I'm enamored with photography and I really want to learn.

I figure if nothing else I can read the lessons and do the assignments once I can afford a basic camera...

u/gapagos · 1 pointr/Cameras

I'm looking at this camera:

https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00I8BIBCW

Are you saying a device meant only to take pictures would give me worse quality results than my Duraforce phone which was not only designed for dual front & back cameras (cheap ones) but also a 1080p touchscreen, wifi, Bluetooth and GSM / HSPA / LTE communications, headphone jacks and a CPU capable of running 3d games?

u/zanonymous · 1 pointr/photography

Can someone explain to me why folks are so outraged by the Hasselblad Lunar, and not the Panasonic/Leica thing? I mean, it seems crazy to me that the DMC-LX5 is $340 and the D-Lux5 is $740, and they're pretty much the same camera.

u/wolfcry0 · 1 pointr/Cameras

We've got a couple of the older version of these sony cameras at work, they're not bad at all as long as you have enough light and nothings moving around much, and they are definitely cheap

I don't know if this interests you or not but we have eye-fi SD cards in all of them so all the images automatically get stored on our server over wifi, makes things a bit simpler

u/urban_ · 1 pointr/Cameras

Are you looking for a point and shoot? If so, check out the Canon S120 on Amazon. If that's too pricey, go a step or two down and look into the Canon S110 and/or Canon S100.

I have the Canon S100 and I absolutely love it. The video rocks, but so do the stills.

u/Ask_Seek_Knock · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This camera is the most expensive thing on my list.

I actually added it today because our old camera stopped working and I keep forgetting to put it on my wish list so I remember to replace it. I found out the old one was broken when I went to take pics of my Abritrary Day Gift, I was a bit upset by that. I'll be okay if I never get it. I mean, Yes, having a camera is very nice for all of our projects, but I can always look up at Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

Until you get up close to the cost of a DSLR... an iPhone or Samsung I'd about on par quality wise.

Canon SX530 HS 9779B001 PowerShot https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RKNND2W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_IpFjzb12BXN0B. Point and shoot that is better than an iPhone or Samsung phone

Little over 100 more and you get

Nikon D3300 24.2 MP CMOS Digital SLR with AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II Zoom Lens, Certified Refurbished, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LZWSJBS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_3qFjzb2WNXKFW. 100x better camera

Amazon has one used for $117.78.

The S120 existed, I think it was the last in the line. The "high-end point and shoot" market is now all about one-inch sensor cameras like the G7X and G9X.

The very small sensor of the FZ300 means too much of an image hit in my eyes. Personally I'd suggest the 1" sensor in the Panasonic FZ1000 or FZ2500 instead.

https://www.amazon.com/PANASONIC-Vario-ELMARIT-Megapixels-Sensitivity-DMC-FZ2500/dp/B01LX7JSPJ/

Especially for the Panasonic FZ1000 you can find a lot of bargains secondhand.

u/zman2596 · 1 pointr/Cameras

What about a bridge type camera? Has look and feel of a dslr but is point and shoot. Not expensive like dslr and is easier to use but has features if she does actually get into it more than you anticipate.

Just one example:

Canon PowerShot SX530 HS - Wi-Fi Enabled https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RKNND2W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_RWcBwb3RCH48N

I just picked up the Canon SX30 IS a few weeks ago. I had to replace my S1 IS due to an unfortunate incident involving sea water.

I've become quite loyal to Canon. The CCD in the S1 was defective and mine started malfunctioning about a year ago. Canon has actually acknowledged the issue and is providing free out of warranty repair. They paid shipping both ways and fixed it with no hassle.

u/litercola84 · 1 pointr/photography

I'm a professional and when I travel I bring my Canon S100 point and shoot. It can make great pictures if you read the manual and learn how to use it. It can either be idiot proof or allows you to shoot RAW and have full manual control over everything. The 120 is the latest model and is $399 I recommend using the extra to buy a spare battery and case.

u/jam6618 · 3 pointsr/videography

Sony w/ the features you want, Panny with the features you want. Panny in your budget. This panny one is probably the only one at the price point with the features. It seemed kind of silly of you to be asking for a similar camera for less money and the g80 has only been out for 5 months, not quite long enough for many releases.

u/anoxy · 1 pointr/photography

If the S95 doesn't fit your needs, check out the Olympus XZ-1 and the Panasonic Lumix LX5

u/driftwood2 · 1 pointr/photography

is this legit?
price is crazy low. curious if anyone has experience buying used from amazon.

My brother has a Fuji - unless you need the hyper-telephoto zoom, there's really not much reason not to buy a compact camera instead. This one is inexpensive, compact, very simple, and charges from USB so you can charge it from your phone charger or car.

u/Minemose · 1 pointr/photography

I want a camera for traveling. These are the two I am looking at
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DBPK7DQ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AD2PTS6IJYEU0

http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HQDBLDO/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3I8SIV4ZMJMWX

So if the one with no optical zoom is 20mp, but the 12mp has 3x optical zoom, how to those compare? Would zooming in (cropping) a 20mp image be similar?

u/asosaki · 1 pointr/photography

FYI Fuji doesn't make a 50 1.8 and neither does Zeiss. It might be a Rokinon/Samyang brand lens, which means you only have manual focusing. Ask him what brand the lens is. If he says Fuji he's lying. Besides, you can get a brand new X-E1 from Amazon for cheaper with the versatile and very sharp 18-55mm lens.

And if you're willing to spend up to $1800 why not consider the Fuji X-E2 instead of the X-E1?

Also, what's your experience level with photography? Do you know a lot about it/how to shoot in manual? Or not too much? All of these cameras might be a little overkill, especially if you're mostly just doing food and blog stuff. Maybe look into the Canon S110 or Canon S120 instead.

u/White_Hamster · 1 pointr/pics

crazy, so it was a point and shoot kind of affair? It didn't happen to be this sexy bitch of a camera, would it?

u/Caroao · 1 pointr/photography

I have a sony alpha Nex-3 Camera from about 5 years ago. Somehow I've misplaced both batteries and the charger. Have been looking all over for them for months and have no clue if I forgot them somewhere or if the socks monster got 'em...but anyways...

Sony, of course, wants an absolutely ludicrous CAD120 for a single battery, no charger.

All the chinese knockoffs on amazon seem to have terrible reviews at best...Does anyone know of any reliable alternatives? Or am i just better buying a new camera?
