I fostered a chihuahua for about a month, and since I worked at a vet clinic he came in to work with me every day. I got him just a normal harness and a seatbelt attachment. It's just a loop that goes around the buckled belt, with a strap and a clip to clip to the dog's harness. You can put a little dog bed on the seat for her, if you like, but the important thing is to have her secured. It's safer for both of you in the event of a crash, and keeps her from becoming a distraction during the ride. In some states (NJ) there's a law to secure pets in the car - you can be heavily fined.

I really don't feel like its making a difference for her - and its the first suggestion people make to me as well. It doesn't cross body like human's do, it more secures them TO the seat belt, so she's still really feeling the motion of the car. I haven't done more research recently about if there's a better style or not.

We have this harness for our Golden Retriever. We bought it when he was around 5 or 6 months old hoping he wouldn't outgrow it. We bought him the medium because he was just barely a medium at the time and hoped we wouldn't have to eventually size up to a large. 2 years later, he's not even close to outgrowing that thing. Ruffwear harnesses run HUGE. If you can get it off Amazon, I would buy both, try both on, and if you can make the small work, send back the XS. If not, keep the XS and send back the small.

I have a Prius and take my dog hiking with me. She wears the Ruffwear Load-Up Harness, which is one of very few crash-tested harnesses for dogs. It's pricey, but a one-time purchase that could save your dog's life. If you decide to order, make sure you take your dog's measurements first so that you get the right size. My dog is not usually a small but she was for this product.

Works up to 130lbs. You could use it clipped into a collar, but I would definitely recommend with a harness.

If you're carrying people and a dog, this goes over the headrest, and is long enough for the dog to have some space.

I have a ruffwear web harness; and while my greyhound is averse to it (and all outwear), it's a well-made, quality product that fit him well. I don't have experience with their vehicle harness - but it appears to be safety tested.

Otherwise - I keep a dog hammock in the back seat of my CX-5, usually with a large fleece blanket. It by no means takes the place of a seatbelt, but provides a comfortable surface for him to lie down on, and he can't go far or tangled up in the seat gaps when stopping short.

I never let my dog sit in the front. It isn’t safe enough for her.

The wife can have the front seat and risk getting hit with the airbag.

The dog is in the back seat strapped in with one of these to keep her safe.

I've got one like this. Basically it is a harness that attaches with a strap to the seat belt.

I've found I use it less rather than more. My dog is a wiggle worm and inevitably gets herself wrapped up in the strap and the seat belt. I'm going to try out one of the ones with a run next time.

You can also secure the dogs harness directly to the seat belt.

Just make sure that it is a very heavy duty strap. You might have to buy two harnesses for your dane, but just one seat belt strap.

DO NOT use that. It got stuck in the housing. Had to spend twenty mins with a skewer to pry it out.

You can buy a strong tether that loops around the seatbelt (the part that goes across your body) and hooks onto your dog's harness.

Obviously secure it to a harness instead of a collar in case you get into an accident.

Hmm, Maybe have the carrier in the car, but if the cat is harness/leash trained, there are cat seatbelt leashes. they're not too long so they can roam around in the back seat, but they buckle into the seatbelt lock.

Hi OP I noticed you had your tied into your car which is a good thing! but if you were to get in a crash that setup would break your dogs neck or rip the head-rest off. Great intentions but the setup is ineffective.

Just a suggestion, get your dog a harness that attaches to the seatbelt. I have the Kurgo Tru-Fit Crash Tested Dog Harness. If you love your dog, you don't want to slam on the brakes and have him fly into the car dash. Or God forbid, worse if you get into an accident.
