I'm an old fart and kind of groggy, so this may be a little jumbled.

She looks old enough to be away from mom, but beyond that, it's hard to tell and you probably won't know for sure how old she is until you get her in to see the vet. So, I'd err on the side of more frequent trips outside.

Until you're pretty confident that she will tell you when she needs to go, I'd recommend the following:

  1. Every time she wakes up from a nap
  2. After eating
  3. After any excitement

If you're able to carry her to where you want her to go, I'd recommend that at first. She probably won't pee on you, and it will avoid accidents in the hallway.

Expect to get up several times in the middle of the night for the first few days. It's unlikely that you have a crate just hanging out, so until you're able to get a kennel, you can probably work up some kind of a barrier for her to stay in your bathroom with the door open overnight.

If you're able to afford one, I would strongly recommend a metal crate, btw. Gives you a secure place for the pupper during the day and gives them a safe space to nap or hang out when they are tired and/or not feeling sociable. The prevailing advice is to get one that is just big enough for the current size of the dog, but I've always gone straight to full size and never had any issues. YMMV. You can sometimes find them at a good discount on CL.

There's a puppy subreddit (b/c of course there is) that you may find helpful. r/puppy101/

This is a good overview of different methods/advice. The biggest hassle is going to be the first few months when she isn't old enough to really hold it for an entire day of work, so you may need to modify your approach depending on what kind of flexibility you have in having someone there to let her out periodically.

I would highly recommend getting a door signal, btw. We use something like this set of bells. I picked ours up at Walmart, but they are widely available. Every time we took dogface out, we'd ring the bells with her paw before opening the door. Took her less than a week to figure out that she could ring them to get a trip outside.

Oh! And pick up some Nature's Miracle. Accidents happen, but that stuff really does a good job at keeping them from happening again in the same place.

Share with your mom the resources I shared. I work for a bunny rescue and I know what I am saying.

Hay is 90% of their diet and really critical for health! Tell you mom that otherwise she will have to spend a lot of money on vet bills later! Any money spent on good hay saves tenfold the money on vet bills. If nothing else I can promise you this! Show you mom - this print it out!

Please don't ignore this advice - if you want to keep her healthy she needs to eat a ton of hay and right now I best she is not eating a lot at all. Hay fiber is what keeps her digestive system healthy and hay is what grinds down her teeth the best, otherwise the they never stop growing and eventually overgrow to the point where the cause mouth sores... she will stop eating and get very very sick. You don't want this!

Here are some resources from professionals:

https://myhouserabbit.com/rabbit-care/hay-for-rabbits-the-basis-for-a-healthy-diet/

https://rabbit.org/the-importance-of-hay/

https://www.saveafluff.co.uk/rabbit-info/importance-of-hay - look at pictures of teeth that happen without hay - this will cost a lot more to fix than hay

I am sorry but if you cannot buy her good hey you need to rehome her... she will eventually get sick and die without hay. It's cruel to keep her.

And please don't buy another cage!!!! I shared with you exactly what you need to buy! Did you look? here is what you basically want to do - so just get two things:

  1. This xpen - https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Foldable-Metal-Exercise-Playpen/dp/B07584TRYH/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?keywords=xpen&qid=1558727781&s=gateway&sr=8-2-spons&th=1 (42 inches)
  2. For the floor you can use a thick plastic tablecloth - you'll put this on the floor beneath the pen. It will be easy to clean, and protects your carpet from pee/droppings just in case. Over the tablecloth you will place a thick blanket that the bun can run on. Anchor outside pen edges so the bun can't dig it up. You can wash the blanket and wipe the plastic under it. You bun is happy and floor is safe.
  3. You also need a larger litter tray to get her litter trained like this - it's only a few bucks
    1. I highly recommend using either carefresh paper litter the is much more absorbent or wood pellets which are equally absorbent and actually have good odor control... might suggest using a mix (in layers) kind of like in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPMlRVUNZ00.
  4. And here is the hay https://shop.smallpetselect.com/products/sampler-box
    1. I can donate the hay to you - one box so you see that she will eat it and she need it (PM me).

PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH POST WITH YOUR MOM - I am an adult, I know what I am saying and would not give bad advice or try to waste your money. This is under $100 in total.

I love Kong brand. Kong has toys that are really tough to chew through, not to mention the original Kong you can stuff treats into is pretty much indestructible. My puppy had an abscessed tooth and she couldn't chew anything for a few weeks so Kongs saved our sanity, not to mention this licky mat. You can smear peanut butter on it, soft dog food, spray cheese etc. It was a lifesaver. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GJWCJST/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_j7WWDbZV9ASNZ

We got the Amazon basics crate and it works well. We also got an Amazon basics play pen that has worked wonders https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0758CTVVR/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_j3WWDbSB2W7AJ

I don't have a brand name, but make sure you get dog beds where the cover zips off for easy cleaning. I did not do that, and it has been interesting trying to potty train with a bed you can't easily clean.

I got a pack of bully sticks on Amazon recently that have been wonderful. Bully sticks are a lifesaver when you just need your pup to sit down and stop bugging you for 15 mins so you can fold a load of laundry. Bully sticks are very expressive so these were a good deal https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07M93Q3CP/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_B-WWDb43SZH8P

I also recommend a martingale collar. My puppy was terrified of going outside when we first got her so she would pull out of her collar and run away. If was stressful. Martingale collars tighten as the dog pulls so they can't pull out of them

I hesitate to recommend a camera, because after the second week of using it, it was really more trouble than it was worth. Yeah, you can check on your puppy while you're at work, but if he's crying or whining you can't do anything about it but feel upset.. If you're interested, we used Wyze cams. You can get them on Amazon, they are super cheap and easy to use. I just recommend using them for the first few weeks only, otherwise your work will suffer like mine did.

Edit: I almost forgot to mention Nature's Miracle, the patron saint of carpet and floors! It eliminates the enzymes in urine so your dog doesn't keep peeing in a particular place in your house because it smells like pee. Buy stock in this company. It is that important.

Good luck!

u/meowsandlaws · 2 pointsr/cats

I’m also moving and have two cats. I haven’t tried this yet, but I found a play pen on amazon with great reviews after a friend of mine recommended I give them some more space than their little crate. Ruff 'n Ruffus Portable Foldable Pet Playpen + Carrying Case & Collapsible Travel Bowl (Large (36" x 36" x 23")) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071RY3NF9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_MgGzDbPV7DQ2Y

I’m planning on using the play pen for feeding so they get used to it and relate it to something good (they love eating), add their favorite blanket & some toys.

u/AppleSpicer · 1 pointr/Rabbits

I'm getting my buns a friend for the first time and the rescue shelter rep recommended a large play pen like this. It's less expensive than a massive cage and gives them a little more feeling of freedom. I've even seen them even cheaper on ebay. 4 feet high should be good if they aren't really jumpy but if they manage to hop over you can secure a sheet on top. They come in colors too. I got a pink one :3

They also told me that they've seen a happy pair with a flemish giant and a little dwarf but that it's good to get a partner around the same age and energy level.

u/amberlynns · 1 pointr/Rabbits

A rabbit cooped up in a cage/pen all day will not be a healthy or happy rabbit. A lot of people use a combination of pen and cage so that their bun has a safe area as well as a good size play area. Pens usually end up being a better option overall as they're cheaper or equal price as a standard cage for TONS more space. I have two of these 24" pens and a 42" pen for my one bun who loved to jump.

You don't need to keep it free range per say, but providing adequate space for play and exercise is ideal and recommended by all. The more space you can offer on a 24/7 basis the better.

u/jtayl711 · 0 pointsr/DIY

So I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this. If not just redirect me to the appropriate sub and I'll re-post there. Our cat just figured out how to open the doggy door so I want to build some kind of automatic doggy door opener that reads and RFID tag that I'll attach to the dogs collar, so it only opens for the dog. Right now have this kind of doggy door installed. I'm thinking of removing that spring loaded latch in the closing panel and attaching some kind of motor above the door so that when the RFID sensor reads the tag, the motor pulls the closing panel vertically up, and then returns it back into the tracks (sort of like this)

I've never really done a DIY project like this before but I feel like it shouldn't be terribly difficult. I have no idea if it will be of any use but I have a Raspberry Pi if that helps at all. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm studying Electrical Engineering so I know a bit about circuit design and some coding but to be honest this is the first practical project I've tried to tackle.

Thanks in advance.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/Rabbits

I just upgraded to this pen, and I LOVE it. Holy crap. I'm a college student, so my buns travel from school to home with me on a monthly basis, and this one is so freaking awesome! It's super easy to assemble and take apart, and it's insanely sturdy. I have two escape artists, and they haven't escaped this one yet. Best part, is that this particular bran has standard sizing and expander panels.

I haven't personally used linoleum, because my rex is a prissy princess, and he refuses to walk on non-carpeted surfaces haha. But it seems to work really well for most people :)

u/yyaaaaaasss · 3 pointsr/Dogtraining

I would suggest that you definitely keep up the crate training. Are you putting treats in his crate when he goes in? Sometimes it's best to associate the crate with these types of positive reinforcements so he is more inclined to think the crate is a great place. If he has separation anxiety, I heard this heartbeat toy works quite well for young puppies.

My other suggestion is, the meantime, while you are crate training him, why don't you get one of these playpens if you have to leave him in the kitchen. That way he is at least away from the walls and in an enclosed space. If he starts to chew the playpen, you could spray it with this bitter spray which really helped my dog when he was teething.

Good luck!!

u/Ephemeral_Halcyon · 5 pointsr/ferrets

The playpen. I spent so fucking long trying to rig play areas for him just to save a few bucks. I attached it to the front of his cage and use flattened cardboard boxes to keep him from climbing (cage bars are horizontal). It's pretty big. If you have room, buy two and you can attach them. Mine loves his ferret ball too (big plastic ball with 3 holes in it you can attach tunnels to).

Put your money toward good food. Look at the ferret kibble chart and buy 2-3 to mix from the top 2 sections. I'd stay away from Wysong. Don't trust them any more. Wellness CORE and Natures Variety Instinct raw boost are great. They sell them both on Amazon for the same price they are at the pet store here. 1 bag of each lasts a single ferret a couple/few months.

As for things not to waste money on: the ferretlax stuff-- they will eat plain vaseline just fine. Ferretone gives mine diarrhea every time. No need for a crap ton of toys-- throw down an old pillow with a case and a few fleece blankets or old tee shirts they can burrow around in.

Looks like you have a good list going, remember to update your pups microchip with your address and get him/her a tag with your details.

We got a 36 inch crate and it's plenty big for our boy (he's around 30 pounds).

Puppia harness is a great starter harness, it's soft and doesn't have a bunch of metal jingling pieces which our puppy HATED on his harness our breeder gave us.

Kibble, check out dog food advisor for reviews and ratings of foods content, we were using grain free salmon and sweet potato from chicken soup for the soul, it's decently priced and well rated I can't find it anywhere atm so we're switching him back to their normal kibble.

Salmon Oil is a lifesaver in the winter, our pup gets terribly dry skin and extremely itchy without it.

Start out with a puppy kong, they sell kong fillers that are cheese and peanut butter flavored, our puppy was pretty picky at first and only ate the cheese one, didn't like frozen kongs either.

I'd start with a Basic Collar here's a Dog Tag Silencer and a Break-away collar for outdoors or dog park. A dog was choked unconscious at our park so I typically just keep our guys ID tags on his harness and don't use a collar, but if you do I definitely recommend a break-away if you are primarily using a harness with it.

Items we found useful: Bed Liner, Crate Fence, Kong, Stainless Steel Bowls (highly reccomend US made do not buy any made in China for health reasons), Zippy Paws Hide and Seek toys, Potty/accident cleaner, Potty Bells, Anti-chew Bitter Apple spray, 50 ft Leash, Retractable Leash, Soft stop Leash extender, Car Seat Belt, Car Booster Seat, Gentle Shampoo, Comb, Travel Water Bottle, Flirt Pole, Special Treats, Chew Stick, Greenies

Sorry for the HUGE list lol, feel free to ask any questions!

We drove with our three cats from CT to AZ about three years ago.

We got a Pet Ego Tube - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007OASY2/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And a Play Pen - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002ABKBQA/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

In the middle of each day's drive we stopped and set up a disposable litter box in the pen and let them have some fresh air.

We also gave them wet food, which they had a bit of. We had one kitty that was sick at the time, so she stayed in a carrier upfront with us, and the two boys hung out in the tube even though there would have been a lot of space even with all three cats in the tube.

Motel 6's nationwide accept pets. You will want to keep them in the bathroom or in the tube/playpen as if there's a tight area they can squirm into, they will.

They didn't eat or use the litter box much throughout the entire trip. They meowed for about 20 miles, but they quieted down each day.

Other than that we used calming spray before bringing them in the room at night.

We stopped by in Columbus, OH, St. Louis, Missouri, and Amarillo, TX. The fourth day we were in our apartment and it took about a week for the kitties to mellow out.

Because we were driving the car out anyway, we didn't look into airfare. With one kitty sick, we weren't into the idea of giving medication to calm her. I don't know the details about flying. If we move somewhere without a car, I'd look into it further. From what I remember, individual carriers with the names and destination. They are kept below seats in the luggage area that has some more environmental controls for air and temperature. You can't fully sedate, or they won't take the animal. They do some sort of responsive test, but I don't know/remember the details.

Best of luck with the move!

You can teach a dog to respect a fence even if they could easily jump it. As long as there is a physical barrier that the pup can see they can learn to respect it.

My golden learned to respect decorative garden fencing that wasn't even a foot high.

For a lab I would use something a little more substantial since it's also going to be the perimeter fence. Something like:

This kind of fence

Would be fine until the teenage months when your pup might push the boundaries and maybe even jump the fence or push it over.

In my opinion one shouldn't leave a young dog unsupervised in the yard so you'll have lots of opportunity to reinforce proper behaviour when it comes to the fencing. Never lift or carry your pup over the fence. Never encourage your pup to go to the other side of the fence. If you do the idea will form in their head that they can go back there.

If they've never gone there they have a much stronger chance of never trying to go there.

u/amaeb · 5 pointsr/dogs

I LOVE the dog door that we put in.

It's insulated and has made our lives so much easier. We have two dogs who love to sunbathe, play, bird watch, chase insects, protect the house from the mailman and of course, relieve themselves. We've noticed that they are much more calm, happy and at ease when they have the freedom to choose whether or not to be outside.

We live in the city (not a big city like New York or San Fran. but a city nonetheless). The door is placed on the back door to our back yard. I figure that if someone really wants to get in, they're going to get in no matter what. So, while a dog door might make it easier, a solid door certainly won't stop them. And that'd be where our house alarm and homeowner's insurance would cover us.

u/zzzhonkshoo · 2 pointsr/dogs

Our renter's insurance through Geico covers dog damage but I'm not sure if there's a deductible on it. Carpet is what usually gets damaged so if you can put aside the money to replace two rooms of carpet since it's a house you should be ok.
However with those two breeds you're looking at some really strong chewing for at least the first two years. Some dogs to go for things like baseboards so be ready to train against that. Also very strong nails can cause damage to carpet, hard wood, and doors. They do make door guards though to protect against scratches. This one has the highest Amazon reviews.

http://www.amazon.com/The-CLAWGUARD-Ultimate-Scratch-Protection/dp/B007JXEVU6/ref=pd_sim_petsupplies_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=12KYS54C22NFNF51JRTJ

Congrats on your new puppy and good news, I've never heard of a puppy burning a house down.

u/TransFatty · 8 pointsr/Rabbits

This rabbit can't be left in the wild, so good on you for rescuing it! Someone dumped it for sure.

If you're going to keep the rabbit, it can be housed in an x-pen. A rabbit this size can't be kept in a cage or hutch; that's too small and it might become aggressive.

x-pen:

https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Foldable-Metal-Exercise-Fence/dp/B0758CTVVR/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?keywords=x-pen&qid=1564975010&s=gateway&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUE4U1FUMkhLREpMRVAmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAzNDk2MTgxQkVTVFlHUUhCNFBSJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA0ODg5NTUyN05CQklSNUVaVko2JndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

Rabbits must have hay at all times. You'll have to provide it with a constant, endless supply of high quality timothy hay. This is their main diet. The links I'm sending you are examples of course - you can source your hay from anywhere, it just has to be good stuff. This rabbit looks like it's old enough that it doesn't need alfalfa hay.

https://www.amazon.com/Small-Pet-Select-Cutting-Timothy/dp/B00WEJA7QC/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?keywords=small%2Bpet%2Bselect%2Btimothy%2Bhay&qid=1564975102&s=gateway&sr=8-2-spons&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFIQUtTUTlNTVJJVUwmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAwMDM3MzYyQTRONFVWUjNZTVBZJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAzNzU1NDIxQVJJUDgwVkZFMUJFJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ&th=1

It can drink water from a bowl. I got my rabbit just a regular, big heavy crock like for dogs.

Rabbits need a litter box. Not the triangle kind though. You put the hay in the litter box, and the rabbit will naturally pee and poop there. I use this for their litter because it's cheap:

https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/tractor-supply-pine-pellet-stall-bedding-40-lb

Rabbit care is highly specialized! They are not easy maintenance pets but I happen to love 'em to bits, they have such funny little personalities.

u/exlipse1 · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

I think that's big enough for nights and unsupervised time. We have something like this that Novy used as a run when he was little. We got a second one and connected them together and that's what he uses when we're gone during the day now. He still goes up to his cage (2ftx5ft?) at night. When we're there he has roam of a few rooms and occasionally the upstairs.

We use cable wrap like this to cover ground cords. He's chewed on them a few times but there's no damage. As long as they're against the wall they'll be fine. For my computer desk I screwed a postal mail tube underneath it and split if length wise to stick the power strip in so it's up out of the way; as a bonus it looks better too!

For the bookshelf, we use gating that looks like the stuff from the pen I linked to above for temporary 'keep bun out' areas like that (in my case the entertainment center).

[Edit: Updated the cable wrap link, used the wrong one initially!]

Amazon sells [Mesh baby gates] (https://www.amazon.com/Evenflo-Soft-and-Wide-Gate/dp/B00AJSJFYA/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1496957823&sr=8-1&keywords=mesh+baby+gate) that can work since the holes are tiny and harder to get a foot hold on. A towel or blanket draped over and secured via zip ties or anything else could be a DIY makeover version for your existing baby gate.

I also ordered one of [these] (https://www.amazon.com/Carlson-Extra-Wide-Through-44-Inch/dp/B000JJDI0G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496957998&sr=8-1&keywords=baby+gate+with+pet+door) for my house since a dog I frequently watch can jump a regular baby gate like an agility champ. I don't know how large your pup is going to get or how large they are now but I really love my gate. My cats can come and go if need be and my dogs don't bother it.

u/Clob · 1 pointr/Rabbits

May not be in your price range, but it's the best one I've found for my uses.

Removable sections. A door. Quality build.

I don't know if its available in the UK though.

> echo button

I've been using MightyPaw https://amzn.to/2BYaHNB but I like your idea too cause then we can track how many times the dog has gone out and send a reminder to ourselves if the dog hasn't been let out in X time on the rare occurrences she hasn't pressed the button.

I just wish I could hack the MightyPaw to also send button presses to Home Assistant since using an Echo button means I'll have to rely on a speaker for dog announcements whereas the MightyPaw comes with a receiver that emits a door bell sound.

Lots of treats. My boys' favorites are raw nuts (walnuts in particular) and bits of fig bars. Climbing toys. You might also want to look into something like this:

Which you can use to establish an outside play area.

I know that there are fancy electronic bells that are run on batteries and come with multiple in a pack. If one is pushed then the other ones will
Make a sound. So you could have one by the door and have another on your second level that would make noise indicating that another one got pushed meaning your dog needs to go out.

This is just an example, but there are a lot if different ones out there. Mighty Paw Smart Bell 2.0, Dog Potty Communication Doorbell, Super-light Press Button Doorbell (1 Activator, White) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073XCY6Y6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_usz8AbC63EYTZ

You can just buy retractable gates and mount those. I used to have two in a previous home. They are soft and don't hurt when you bump into them. There is a tiny bit of give but not much, and they work fine for old dogs and cats that won't be trying to barrel or bash through.

Does your pup have free reign over the house? My wife and I have raised two puppies and have had the most success by limiting access as part of their training. Our Standard Schnauzer spent the first few months with us, when we were out of the house, in the living room in an X-Pen. We use this one: http://www.amazon.com/IRIS-Plastic-Exercise-Containment-Panels/dp/B0083ZWZ2K/ref=sr_1_24?ie=UTF8&qid=1409243011&sr=8-24&keywords=x+pen, but your pup will probably eat it.

It is quite possible your pup doesn't know what to do when he's alone with so much room. It's a common misconception that keeping your dog in a room while you're away is "mean" to the dog. In stages, we gave our dog more room while we were away and he adjusted perfectly. No accidents whatsoever.

We have cameras set up in our home and I can tell you that our dog literally sleeps all day in one room. Sometimes two. That's it.

Your pup may also require a lot more exercise prior to being left alone. Our Standard Schnauzer, who is now almost 3 years old, get's on average a 1.5 mile walk and 15 minutes of running in our backyard, chasing frisbees and other fetch toys EVERY MORNING. And this is a 42 lbs. dog. He gets an hour walk every evening too.

Now, some dogs can have actual anxiety issues that may require working with a behaviorist and perhaps medication. The most important thing, IMHO, is understanding your dog's particular needs. Try limiting the space, maybe set up a webcam and keep a log of his behavior, and try more exercise.

Like others have suggested, you can hang bells from the door knob/handle. We have a curtain covering the door, so I got our dog a wireless doorbell. The receiver plugs in, so I put it by our bedroom to wake me up if she needs to go at night.

A friend of mine was in a similar situation with her small yard and Maltese. She ended up buying pet fence panels that can be strung together to any length or configuration you need.

My brother has a dog that is an escape artist. She has found a multitude of ways to escape the fence and gets in fights with the neighbor's dog. They finally had to resort to a wireless containment system. Rather than have to bury a cable that shocks the dog when they cross it, this is a fence that goes off when the dog gets too far away from the base receiver. So say you set the base by the back door, the dog can go up to 90 feet away from the base before being buzzed.
