Some additional tips I can add, from my year living in northern Canada:


-Insulated tights can keep you very warm, but they will often bag out, ride down, or otherwise cause fit problems. The easy solution? Wear insulated tights, and then wear a well-fitting pair of hosiery tights over top to keep them in place. I like the Heat tights from Mark's — one pair will work to about -10 C, two pairs for below. Layer with a pair of black hosiery tights from Joe Fresh. Warm, comfortable legs for winter skirt looks.


-If it's above about -15 C, or if sidewalks in your area are well-cleared, or if you aren't standing outside for long periods, you can get away with waterproof fashion boots + warm socks. I really like La Canadienne boots (they're from Montreal!). Full price for those runs about $400, but I've bought a few pairs for $100-$200 by regularly searching Amazon and eBay. The waterproofing is pretty good (holds up in slush, not sure about jumping in puddles) and with regular leather care the leather holds up to snow/slush better than any other brand I've tried. Some styles are slightly insulated, you can make them even warmer by buying a size up and wearing thick insulating socks. Another good way to make boots warmer is to buy insulating insoles at the drugstore and sew them into little toe pockets — toes get cold first, this can buy you an extra ten degrees. Other waterproof fashion boot brands include Aquatalia, Blondo, and Santana Canada. I can say from personal experience Santana Canada boots are NOT waterproof in slush though.


-If you want to maintain a hairstyle but keep your ears warm, my best recommendation is to put bandless earmuffs/ear mitts on your ears and then wear a coat with a roomy hood. Full-on earmuffs are a very distinctive look, but bandless earmuffs can be worn underneath a hairstyle and look quite subtle. These will not be warm enough for extreme cold but a good hood should hold you and is generally better for hat-head.


-If you must wear a hat but are concerned about hat-head, a roomy/slouchy toque is better than a close-fitting one, and cashmere is better than regular wool or synthetics. If you're on a strict budget and handy with a needle and thread, it's easy to find stained or ripped cashmere sweaters at thrift stores and most give you enough fabric to transform into a hat. And don't buy a hat with holes or a loose knit, it won't keep you warm.


-You need mitts with good insulation. Gloves are for -5 C and above, or situations where your hands will only be out for very short periods. Either buy tech mitts or get touchscreen thread from Amazon, because taking off your mitt to use your phone is the worst. Knit gloves under mitts are good for extra insulation or to provide some warmth when you need finger dexterity outdoors.


-Wear a merino long underwear top/base layer under your regular shirt/sweater to warm it up without adding bulk

From cheapest to most expensive...

Art supplies are always appreciated because they're used up so quickly. They're a great default if you don't know what to get.

Dapper Snappers are really nifty little things that most people don't know about.

Head to the bookstore and get the staff to recommend some fantastic children's books.

Get a family membership to the local zoo, aquarium, children's museum, nature center, etc. (although check first - many places let children 2 and under in for free, so a couple's membership might be a better value).

You just need to find a smaller size for your head or find a hat that's adjustable. Some hats have a drawstring on the inside that can be cinched and tied for a tighter fit. I was recently on a boat with super intense wind gusts and my hat didn't budge because I made it pretty tight around my head. Granted I had a dent in my forehead for a solid day but at least I didn't lose my hat haha! I have another wool hat that is not adjustable but it fits perfectly as it won't blow off but doesn't leave any forehead dents.

This is the one I got for summer. I like it because it fits my small head, it's packable, adjustable, and has wire in the edge so you can reshape it as you like it.

I use these gloves, and sometimes I'll then throw a sock over the gloved hand for extra protection. While moving the doll, I put the arms sorta in towards the body and try to have the hands on the torso so there's less chance of them bumping into anything. When I'm posing the doll, I do the hands last - which would usually end up happening anyways since they tend to get knocked out of position easily. For what it's worth, I usually put stocking, socks and shoes on pretty early into what ever I'm doing to also protect another easily damaged area.

Okay, so, I wasn't able to find the exact wallet because it's several seasons old, and I just moved so I packed up my real wallet in favor of a Dakine wristlet (I've got the black, purple and green one) that just carries my driver's license, a card, my phone, and some cash, but I found this one on eBay.

Actually, it's more like this with the dark greyish purple for the main color (no pattern), and with olive green trim.

Both of those are exactly my wallet, just with different colors/patterns. It's apparently older than I thought. haha.

this is my favorite color, and would be flippin fabulous for filling full of my things so i stop falling flat on my face on the filthy floor getting me frustrated and flustered and feeling foolish for the forty fifth time. Since other people are giving some suggestions, these are baby/child pants tighteners that don't require things like buckles, can be buttoned together for larger sizes and then will not hit into the stomach like an all-around belt does and they don't loosen. I've seen them sell on Etsy too, so you might be able to commission a larger size made.

I usually just roll the waist band down. I bought one of those Dapper Snapper 'belts', but it only works on jeans with belt loops....which there are not a lot of (that I buy anyway).
