Thanks that's definitely some good advice. The only thing I have on the walls right now is a dart board and maybe a TV eventually. I can get these lights through work for $16 ea. Not sure if you have any thoughts on them but they seems pretty good. https://www.amazon.com/Sylvania-70699-10-watt-Recessed-Downlight/dp/B00F0X529Q . I think this is the spec sheet for them. https://assets.sylvania.com/assets/Documents/LED169.e86b881e-94ed-4eb0-ae90-4a1254bfdaf4.pdf

And just to make sure I'm on the same page, aiming to have the beam hit the wall a third of the way up looks ideal?

Thanks!

edit: spelling

Thanks a ton for the reply -- can you give me an example of how the bulbs dim? For example, if you change from 20% to 100% brightness does it happen relatively instantly or sort of scale up over several seconds. My bulbs are dimmable. My kitchen lights are these (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H1T897E/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). As I mentioned in the above comment "this is something purely aesthetic and something I thought would be cool for more of an ambiance thing if the lights smoothly turned on or adjusted levels of brightness over like..3-5 seconds". Do you know if this is something switch, bulb, or automation specific and if that can potentially be adjusted with some SmartApp or other sort of "virtual dimmer". Thanks again for the reply.

Philips had a line of incandescents for a while that used a similar concept-- the filament was encased in a small glass capsule in the bulb to capture some of the heat normally lost. Their best weren't this efficient, though, beating normal incandescents by about 30% but not reaching the efficiency of CFL or LED.

It's great to see that the idea isn't dead, and is being refined into something that can actually compete-- more options is better!

You can do it with a hand dimmer.

Get a 650w dimmer, wire it in line with the socket. Done.

You can also get a “Magic Gadget” flicker box. Most rental houses have them.

Something like these https://www.amazon.com/Dimmable-Halogen-Candelabra-Chandeliers-Lighting/dp/B07RZQ5W71

Get a candelabra socket, some zip cord and go to town.

Hand dinners are available at most home improvement stores.

PSA don’t touch the glass part, especially when lit. Might be hot ish.

Please post pics of your enclosure build, so that you can receive advice. You will require a good thermostat and lighting. I would suggest an array of PAR16 halogen lights like these: https://www.amazon.com/Bulbrite-FMW-E26-35-Watt-120-Volt/dp/B000WZC1ZU/ref=pd_bap_rp_1/142-7465981-9634766?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B000WZC1ZU&pd_rd_r=1f3f1bf3-3531-4575-86c2-08a5820f007f&pd_rd_w=ChHIr&pd_rd_wg=asiON&pf_rd_p=aec52988-b7d4-431a-8040-7c6531ac239f&pf_rd_r=SSK00EX6V4753JK9PBES&psc=1&refRID=SSK00EX6V4753JK9PBES. You can use 35 watt or 50 watt or mix of them.

Use one of these thermostats: https://www.spyderrobotics.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=36. With it you can control basking lights, CHE or radiant heat panels, humidity and temperature gradient.

Build at least 6' tall so that you can offer very deep substrate and enter for cleaning. Use a tree and branches for climbing and offer several levels of basking tiles (Retes stack) so it can move up and down while basking and thermoregulate.

Minimum width of enclosure should be 12' but you may get away with 10' if you don't have a large enough room. But bigger is always better.

Thank you and everyone else in this thread for their great suggestions! I'm going to save up for the nobsound amp and tubes. One more question: https://www.amazon.com/General-Electric-GE-Electron-Vacuum/dp/B0195UWJG8 Is there any reason I shouldn't buy these tubes as supposed to the Riverstone audio ones?

u/kthoag · 1 pointr/malelivingspace

Are these the GE bulbs you're referencing? If you use them, any chance you could take a photo of the effect? Sounds like it could walk a very fine line between beautiful and headache-inducing.

u/SuperAngryGuy · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

I've seen no hard evidence that the fancy ones are any better than the quality name brand bulb you bought from a spectral quality stand point but it's hard to say. You most likely get the same mechanical quality with a Philips as most other bulbs.

Some bulb manufacturers claim more red. Here's a paper that shows green is more photosynthetically efficient then red at higher lighting levels.

Some claim 25% more blue. Does 3% vs 3.8% blue make a difference? Hard to tell and I'm sure it's plant/strain specific if it does.

If I had to get a 400 HPS bulb, I'd do what you did. I just wish they sold the 600 HPS at this lower price.

It's the generic bulbs I'd stay away from even if you can buy the 400 HPS for less than $10.

great, thanks!

Do you think the one you linked to will work with dimmer switches, or do I need to find some separate "dimmable" version?

Also, is this one https://www.amazon.com/Westinghouse-0477300-1500Hr-2600Lm-Halogen/dp/B00GRTJJXW the same? The Lumens one has a base of "R7s" and the Amazon one has a base of "RSC" - how would I know which base I need, or are they interchangeable?

u/jonathanrdt · 2 pointsr/modeltrains

Are you using the 18v dcs power supply?

Replace your bulbs with these: Eiko - 2102 Miniature Light Bulb https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003XVSFBY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_Wopzwb99GNXS7

The factory MTH bulbs are 14v, and they run too hot w dcs. Those eikos are perfect for power lock ons, turnouts, and cars, fit in the existing bases.

Also: I found and ordered the dome car. Ty.

u/drtonmeister · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

A picture of the socket would be useful.

A 56 watt flood that emits 980 lumens sounds like it might be something like a PAR 30. If that is the case there is a standard Edison style "medium" e26 screw base. 56 watts is what you get with an "energy saving" halogen lamp when you are looking for equivalent light output to a standard (old, no-longer-made) 75W PAR30.

You can remove the downlight trim and replace both the trim and the lamp with a retrofit LED kit

u/Cs60660 · 1 pointr/electricians

are you positive you have a dimmer installed? Any bulb with a filament that gets hot to produce light is by nature dimmable. If you got a bulb like this one then it's not the bulb, it's the fixture.

u/UncleGael · 2 pointsr/BeardedDragons

The type of bulb would be fine, assuming you have a fixture that can hold that socket type. That said, you're going to want something larger than 2" and 50W might not give you the temperatures you need. I would look for something like this and just figure out what wattage will work for you. You can find bulbs like that at almost any big box store or hardware store.

u/shuTex · 1 pointr/homeowners

So I went to Home Depot and all the bulbs for 120v have a different set of prongs that plug in. Only the 12v has the same connection piece.

Like these...
GU10 Halogen Light Bulb, MR16 Light Bulbs 120V/50W, Glass Cover & Dimmable, 500 Lumens Warm White, High Efficiency Halogen Flood Light Bulbs for Indoor (6 Pack) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DMJQDN2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ZfqlDb7B3TB67

I like these, but that's just me

bulbs

They take the heat in the hood way better in my opinion

u/IphtashuFitz · 1 pointr/techtheatre

I once created a star effect for a dream sequence by dangling thin-gauge electrical cord with these bulbs soldered on the end. They were dangling in front of a dark set so really weren't visible at all. I had each bulb wired to one channel of the 8 channel DMX relay board shown here so I could turn the lights on as an actor pointed up at each one.

If you don't want to spend the money on a relay board like that you could just run wires to a bank of switches and turn them on/off manually.

u/CoveredInMud · 2 pointsr/gadgets

Looks like a setup for a halogen bulb. Is there a model number on the lamp anywhere?

Edit: YX032 (number on the socket) http://en.09635.com/pd/6029945/G9-Halogen-Lampholder-Ceramic-Lamp-Holder-with-VDE-cUL-CQC-Certficate-YX032-B4-.htm uses a G9 halogen lamp with a ceramic base. A 60 Watt bulb can be found on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/CBConcept-Brand-Halogen-120Volt-60Watt/dp/7801032314 or do a web search. They do come in less watts too.

Edit 2: Note, that bulb is frosted. Any halogen with a g9 base should work. You don't have to use a ceramic base bulb. Just wanted to clarify.

chain of low wattage halogen bulbs is what I use in my arboreal monitor lizard enclosure. 8 of them total wired in pairs. You will probably need 4-5.

Few benefits to this setup: you can individually dim each pair to fine tune temperature. You can individually replace bulbs in each pair to fine tune even more(for summer I replace some with low heat leds). You can also automate each pair to go on/off at certain time to emulate dusk/dawn. Chain of lower wattage lights doesn't affect humidity as much.

Here is how it looks in my enclosure. It is evening, so most of the lights are off for the night.

All you need for that is piece of plywood, number of inexpensive ceramic lamp holders, and 35 watt lensed flood halogen bulbs.
