I also tried the 3M privacy Mod myself and ran it for full week before deciding the negatives outweighed the positives. Here are a few details from my own tests:

1. Disassembling the rift itself was pretty easy following the iFixit tear down instructions (just do a web search). Caveat - I broke a few of the plastic clips on the inside of the case due to the number of time I dismantled the case. Decided using some blue painters tape to keep the front plate attached was the simplest thing to do. It isn't pretty, but it doesn't leave any stick residue and makes disassembly fast.

tip: you don't have to unscrew the nose piece assembly if you are careful with putting your face-piece and screen next to one another (just don't twist the wires running to the LCD screen!)
tip2: you absolutely have to have compressed air to remove dust mites and be extremely careful not to touch LCD or filters - oil from fingerprints are VERY noticeable.
tip3:a box cutter, ruler and two pieces of clean white paper with filter btw them is good way to keep filter clean while cutting to size.

Next as the original poster stated, there are some difficulties getting the 3M screen to sit away from the Rift screen. I tried a number of things to wedge btw them both and at multiple heights. The 3M screen has two options:
Shiny side up or matte side up. I ended up going with shiny side since it supposedly permits more light to go through.

Impression: I saw a definite diminished screen door affect at the expense of introducing a 'diagonal' visual 'tearing' artifact - Not as noticeable but still not a preferable solution. Without the Rift reassembled I could almost get the diagonal artifact removed by adjusting filter space btw LCD, but as soon as I got it reassembled it would return to some extent. I also tried the filter both horizontal and vertical with no real difference in viewing quality.

I finally opted to put two 3M filter screens on top of one another which removed the artifacts I was seeing almost completely, but at the expense of reduced brightness and contrast and a bit more 'smudged/blurred graphics'.

Finally a week later I took everything apart and did some more comparisons, at which point I decided the native screen door effect was preferable to the short-comings I had with the filter.

Maybe there is a different filter that would provide better results but at $30 a filter I'm not trying again.

Here's the screen I went with:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003V14N08/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

$32 and some change for the 13.3 inch version, enough to splice out two full-sized Rift filters.

T/L D/R....screen door effect was easier to deal with than short-comings associated with the 3M filter mod.

i ordered this about a week ago. it came in today and i immediately installed it using these tools and also used this youtube video to build up courage. warning: slight gore as he pries the rift open with a metal flat tip screwdriver.

  • overall effect on quality: greatly improved. it'll blur if you leave smudged fingerprints everywhere though.

  • darkens the screen: barely noticeable. removing the screen door completely outweighs this. can't even tell in-game. i only noticed when i had the screen set to a completely white picture, and could see both the screen with and without the 3M filter on top, while i was working on it.

  • it probably modifies the contrast slightly. i can't really tell and don't have a contrastometer.

  • 3M material was what the source i relied on suggested; "smoked" privacy screen. i used the 10 inch size in the link above because it was only $20, but this does not give you a lot of margin of error. the 12 inch size costs around $40.

  • i just rolled a bit of scotch tape up. original author of the mod suggests the width of a nickel.

  • suggestions: work in a clean environment. the more time you take on this project, the better it will work. use some powder free disposable gloves and keep a can of compressed air handy.

Some of those filters don't obscure anything if the brightness of the Macbook screen is set high.

Plus, they really can cause eyestrain and make the screen look like butt.

But, yeah, 3M makes the 12 inch macbook filter at about $25. Set the Macbook screen brightness setting to low, otherwise it won't obscure much at all. The filters dim the screen for you too, so it can give some people eye strain. Also, not all angles are blacked out to people walking by- some angles you can still catch a glimpse. Someone sitting next to you or directly behind you can often still see your screen.

3M makes a great one, but it's a bit pricey:

3M Privacy Filter for Widescreen Laptop

Make sure to chose the one that fits your specific laptop. Then watch all the GoT you want and don't worry about those sitting next to you.

My colleagues like these magnetic ones. But they don't allow it to close fully. I've used this style but you have to take care to not get bubbles on application.

u/Nakotadinzeo · 26 pointsr/mildlyinteresting

Who is really gonna care?

From this distance you can't really tell what is on his screen, and even if they do there's a cheap and simple fix

u/construktz · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

If the displays are what you're worried about, get the Acer Aspire V7-582PG and a 3M Anti-glare filter and you should get the best results.

u/HerbertGWells · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

You can't make it like it was from the factory, but you can remove the old stuff and then simply buy a 3M anti-glare sheet to place over the monitor.

Dismantling of your monitor should be similar to this:

https://hddcaddy.eu/remove-anti-glare-coating-from-lg-29um68-monitor/

And the replacement film you need to find is this brand, only larger to fit your screen:

https://www.amazon.com/3M-Anti-Glare-Widescreen-Monitor-AG230W9B/dp/B01HHXPB9M?th=1

If you can't find it in stores, you should be able to contact 3M directly via their website.

This is a good sample too. They come in different colors. grey privacy screen

For sure this one!! 3M Gold Privacy Filter for 14" Widescreen Laptop (GF140W9B) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002RL8J8U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_MyI0BbWFERKE0

It doesn’t look gold straight on but VERY much so from sides (airplane seat distance even)

u/toplegs · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I think 3m makes some polarizing screens, but they make the screen look black only when you're not looking head on. So people would still be able to see your screen, if they are like directly on your shoulder or something.

edit: this is what i was thinking of - filter I'm not actually sure now if it is polarizing...

u/thunderingshoe · 2 pointsr/PixelBook

I think I may try out this Kensington magnetic screen protector: https://www.amazon.com/Kensington-MacBook-Magnetic-Privacy-K64490WW/dp/B077TVSTMT/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1539915566&sr=8-9&keywords=magnetic%2Bscreen%2Bprotector%2Blaptop&th=1#customerReviews

I think the height will be OK for the PB while the width will overshoot the sides slightly, but I figure that's OK considering it can be removed so easily which means I can use it just when needed. It could be a pain to store when not in use though - wouldn't want to shove it in a bag and get bent...

The only other obvious caveat would be the price. I think I'll at least demo it and then send it back to amazon if it's not worth it!

I purposely claimed the cube with my back to the wall and where the least amount of people will need to walk behind me, for this very reason. I also invested in a privacy screen.
