Disclaimer: I've never actually tried this, but I can think of no practical reason it shouldn't work.

Edit: If you don't have a line out on your computer, do not fear. Find a 3.5mm-to-USB adapter from Amazon

Edit 2: [Here] (http://www.cnet.com/how-to/transfer-memorable-voice-mails-to-your-computer-with-a-simple-audio-trick/) is an excellent tutorial from CNet

Yup. I'm using this on my Mac and it works great.

If you can you should definitely get a USB adapter.

A long time ago I purchased this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0058P0I2C/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
But it looks like it's unavailable now. However, something like that would work well for you.

I just did a quick search and found this one. It has good reviews. I would strongly suggest you go with the USB. As far as quality goes I think the quality is nearly identical, just a different way to plug in.

I don't think SS has a way to order just parts unfortunately.

> MOTHER FUCKER YOU CAN BUY AN ADAPTER FOR THE USB TO SUBSTITUTE FOR THAT!

There's this for $8. If you'd rather buy a more reputable brand, there's a Logitech one for $12.

I use a USB headset adapter that came with a headset I bought, looks basically like this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-3-5mm-Jack-Audio-Adapter/dp/B0058P0I2C

I made a cable to take me from the 1/8th inch headphone jack to the microphone input on my Kenwood. It seems to work fine for me, of course I'm using VOX instead of PTT as I'm not directly controlling my rig. I do need to carefully jockey my PC volume on that separate USB audio device output and the microphone gain but I can't see how that's any different than a fancier dedicated interface, except maybe for that isolation or more correct microphone input impedance?

I've flown about 60k+ miles in the past couple years, I'm pretty confident that your Father is making a mistake when he says that on planes headphones tend to be driven by the USB port.

If you look at this image you'll see that while there is a USB port, it's usually used for charging electronics. The actual 3.5mm jack for sound is usually at the edge of the arm rest. To add to that the headphones airlines tend to give out also have 3.5mm jacks attached to them.

However in case your father is right, I'd recommend the ATH-M50x for a couple reasons. Firstly it's the only closed headphones I know off the top of my head (sorry) that can be had at $100 ish (used from Amazon warehouse deals), secondly it can be folded, and lastly it doesn't leak much sound. To make it work with USB you'd need one of these.

I'm pretty confident someone else can come around and give better headphone recommendations though since I don't deal much with closed headphones.

EDIT: Sorry I forgot you lived in Canada, I'm sure you won't have much difficulty finding those two items off of Canadian stores/websites.

You need this or this.

I don't think you can just get any old USB to 3.5mm adapter, it's a digital signal on USB going to analog. Some piece of electronics (DAC) has to convert the digital sound to analog, and only a USB to 3.5mm adapter won't do it.

I've updated since 10.9.2 was available. The "crashes" people are speaking about do not often happen on OSX. That is a common issue when using unqualified Windows/Nvidia drivers. OSX does not commonly suffer the same problem from unqualified setups -- it's mostly ISIS/Interplay compatibility that is affected. So... if you are not on an ISIS setup... changes are you will be fine.

About the "audio problem" yes there IS one, but it only affects the new Mac Pro tube. The new Mac Pro needs to have a USB audio device (such as this: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-3-5mm-Jack-Audio-Adapter/dp/B0058P0I2C) connected, otherwise MC 7.03 won't start. The issue arises from the fact that MC requires an audio-input device to initiate its audio engine...and the new Mac Pro doens't have one ^^

I don't think this connects through USB but it does connect to your receiver through a standard 3.5mm jack. If you are looking for a wireless way to connect your Iphone/droid to your receiver this would 100% be the way to go. http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/wireless-speaker-adapter
This item is $49.00 and absolutely worth it, very clear, very easy to connect and doesn't randomly disconnect, i can walk to the other side of the house with out losing signal.
If you absolutely need it to connect to USB, don't worry Logitech makes something for that. http://amzn.com/B0058P0I2C
Here is the Logitech wireless speaker adapter listed on amazon at a cheaper price http://amzn.com/B004VM1T5S

Any advice on picking an external usb soundcard?

currently thinking about this one, but I'm not sure about compatibility...

u/tumz_huggleton · 1 pointr/macgaming

Thought I'd share some of my knowledge of using gaming headsets with Macs since I've bought several in the past month to find something ideal...

Standard headsets (with headphone and mic plugs) will need an external audio card dongle that plugs in through USB (Logitech has one that I use: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-3-5mm-Jack-Audio-Adapter/dp/B0058P0I2C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1405395592&sr=8-1&keywords=logitech+usb+sound+card other companies make something similar as well) or the mic will not work. The input jack is unpowered (newer iMacs don't even have this port)

This is not the case with most USB headsets though, like the wireless G930 headset which uses a USB receiver (however currently the surround sound features of the G930 do not work on OSX, but performs just fine as a standard headset)

Other options that work but I'd probably recommend you stay away from is Bluetooth and iPhone-compatible headsets. The quality on these options are pretty bad all around, at least for gaming.

Nice. Didn't realize it was a simple passthrough.

I have this nice logitech adapter, though I still might prefer running my cans through my amp.

u/BOLL7708 · 1 pointr/oculus

I was looking to do this as well, but have not bought anything yet :D My idea so far, get one of these Logitech soundcards, use a pair of headphones I have and then attach a ModMic to the DK2...

Just not sure how bad it would be to stick a magnet to the Rift, might throw off the magnetic calibration, but with the camera perhaps that isn't so bad.

I'd also have to cut down the cable on the ModMic which makes it a bit scary :P It's not cheap enough for me to go bonkers with it.

If you have only one 3.5mm jack, then it is a headphone OUT. (Look at the little icon next to it... it's headphones.)

However, do not fret! http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-3-5mm-Jack-Audio-Adapter/dp/B0058P0I2C
