No, a mattress pad before the memory foam craze meant like a mattress protector, like another cotton, sometimes lightly padded fitted sheet that is sometimes waterproof / water resistant which keeps your sweat and body oils from leeching into the mattress. ex https://www.amazon.com/-Mattress-Protector/dp/B003PWS9AI/

Are you sleeping directly on top of the mattress, or are you in a sleeping bag?

Cold, dirty and sticky... ugh. If they're close to standard mattress sizes (twin I'm guessing), why not just get a mattress protector? They're made to protect the mattress from humans, but will also work protecting the human from the mattress.

Something like this:

Not sure what you might have available in NZ though. Along similar lines, you could make one from a tablecloth, the kind with fabric on one side and plastic or PU coating on the other.

Wirecutter (personal go-to for product testing) is reccomending a SafeRest Premium Mattress Protector
its also supposed to be available from walmart, is pretty cheap, and supposedly is fully waterproof while still feeling like fabric and won't degrade with washing

Honestly, it doesn't bother me, since I know I'm going to get horribly gross every time I'm on a plane, and then I just clean me/my clothes right afterwards.

But, if you're really excited by this idea, something like this might be best: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003PWS9AI/

It's waterproof/non-permeable, but small enough to pack in a carry-on without too much issue. Essentially just a waterproof fitted sheet.

if the first time was an accident the couch now smells like potty.

You need to clean it with an enzymatic cleaner to completely eliminate the smell for the dog.

If it happens again - then it is a training issue and you definitely need to not allow her on the couch.

I would purchase a waterproof mattress protector to cover the seat cushions AFTER you use the enzyme cleaner.

This way if there are other occurrences, it won't actually soil your couch again.

I really liked the putting a potty chair in his room idea. It’s good to have the option. Sometimes if they’re sleeping they can’t feel it coming and there’s no waking them up. Limit fluid intake before bed, go potty as part of his bedtime routine and be patient, they will grow out of it eventually. In the meantime use pull-ups and keep a protective/plastic sheet on his bed. That way you can easily take it off and wash it and he and his mattress won’t smell like urine.

I really like this brand because it’s plastic on the bottom and a soft fabric on the top so it doesn’t feel like you’re sleeping on plastic at all.

I have these (http://www.amazon.com/SafeRest-Hypoallergenic-Waterproof-Mattress-Protector/dp/B003PWS9AI/) on every mattress in our house just for regular protection and nothing has gotten through them yet. For birth though, I'd go with the plastic sheet or shower curtain.

neato coloring book is the cheapest on my list.

This is most needed at the time for my lil ones bed

We all have covers on our mattress. Mostly for allergy but hey humans and pets leak occasionally at any age.

The ones that zipper the mattress in have a tendency to vacuum pack it, making the mattress uncomfortable.

I use cotton bedding as well. I'd suggest picking whichever type of weave feels most comfortable to you (percale, sateen, etc). I'm currently using Threshold percale sheet sets from Target and Tommy Hilfiger sheet sets from Macy's and love them.

Dust mite allergy is a big thing for many eczema sufferers (including myself), and my allergist recommended using dust mite covers for the mattress and pillow to limit exposure. I just bought this one on Amazon last week.

As for doing laundry, it's a good idea to wash bedding using hot water weekly for cleanliness as well as to kill dust mites and bacteria etc. Fragrance can be a huge trigger for eczema, so I've been using All Free & Clear detergent and using white vinegar in a Downy ball for the wash. I also use dryer balls in the dryer instead of fabric softener (no fragrance and chemicals!).
