u/AltFMild · 5 pointsr/Supplements

Hi, so I’ll provide some insight from my n=1 experience with some body fat that was covering my abs. It appeared to have come about by trying to always eat at a surplus as well as extra fruit at night.
Note: I thought this was water retention until asking around Reddit. And this is at 10% bf!
https://m.imgur.com/XntafgR

But to make a long story short, the supplements I’m taking now daily is
> Decaf EGCGs with all or all-1 meals https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RH5I8U0

(I have up caffeine back in 2016 due to adrenal fatigue)

> Coleus Forskolii 1x a day https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0747YVVCB

> 2x l-carnitine furmarate inbetween meals https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0013HXKC4

These have helped along with implementing carb cycling, IF, and some minor morning HIIT mainly with jump rope.

Here’s how I currently look now after these experiments from the past month, to today (greater Serratus visibility, 4pack looks “healthy”, and overall a lean but anabolic appearance)
https://i.imgur.com/C18moam.jpg

Background: my diet is pretty bulletproof being a low carb, low FODMAP, AIP Paleo. I’m 29 and 5 8. I also run once a week at a distance of 9miles, but my job is someway sedentary. Before implementing these changes, I was under the belief that calories don’t matter at all when eating a whole food approach. Now I’ve revised that thinking to say they PARTLY matter, but really it’s moreso about your selections of Whole Foods, and not always opting for say, berries.

To get here, last month I started out by doing a 10 day Keto (was going to do 3, then 7, then made it to 10 before I said F-this I want to be able to do push-ups again, lol)... so definitely I found insanely difficult primarily from just having no workout strength. The Keto community will say that that is not long enough to see results, but I did, and I know I can be in ketosis in as little as 24h or less due to already beings fat adapted and low carb inherently due to intolerances (as shown by some Organic acid testing) The willpower of also only consuming greens as my carb source rather than say butternut squash was also starting to play games with me. Carb cycling (3 days off such as only greens with your fat and protein, 1 day with whole food carbs) is much better for us smaller body types, that don’t have THAT much fat already. Carb cycling was something that I heard Chelsea Axe (Dr Axe’s wife) talk about in something she implements and has excellent success with. I found this very interesting and have had past acute success with (as noted by the first image, thinking I was holding water but was actually small “smooth” body fat)

However right now I’m not even really doing carb cycle. In fact the opposite, whereby i like to carb backload since I workout in the evenings, but instead of fruit I instead opt for a organic rooty starch like Pumpkin or Butternut Squash, and I’m doing this nightly. I may have like 5 frozen strawberries and raspberries if desiring that sourness. This was never something I did before, thinking that rooty startchy vegetables where causing this “water retention”... which was actually bodyfat. So now doing these starches instead, nightly only, at 1 meal (idk if eating these earlier would have any difference in effect, I just like to carb backload again due to schedule, but also biological knowledge about being more insulin sensitive in the evening too), I’m noticing good results. So why perhaps?
Maybe I’m increasing thyroid output and overall metabolic rate, while NOT intaking a bunch of extra glucose.

I’ve determined that getting my 2014 Keto caffeine abs back isn’t too sustainable
http://imgur.com/V0uSYo1

Here I was in a very fatigued, catabolic, but low bf% state, whereby I killed off all of carbs, and really wasn’t eating enough raw material, despite building these blocky abs from them being my complete workout focus. However I was also doing a TON of yoga at the time, and too much running as well. I was also fully caffeine dependent using it like a biohacker that had gone mad where I’d have beside teabags “brewing” in water bottles for the morning wake up. Anyway...

Last thing... This article was also handy and my main takeaways from this was:

  • IF fast (which I can do easily)
  • do HIIT (mines more like jump rope, and some random higher acute cardio stuff)
    https://www.bodybuilding.com/content/how-to-lose-body-fat-now-the-most-effective-methods-explained.html

    Final thoughts:
If you want to abstain from caffeine for a week, you should note some greater effects when introducing it back in. This isn’t feasible for me, but I noticed this when forgetting that 90% cacao chocolate is loaded up with caffeine and seeing some crazy results. Personally I would go that route. Cut coffee and such. Then I member super dark chocolate 85%+ (not working about the fat or calories), and also Impelenbt matcha green tea powder to get loaded up on EGCGs.

Otherwise, check out those 3 supplements, and do some IF. My fast simply is not eating until noon or 1p the following day after final meal is at 11p. If you haven’t already, switch to a high fat, high protein diet. I personally wouldn’t bother counting calories once your body setpoint is working and you can be easily satiated (and blood sugar stabilized with lots of fat) for hours with say, grass fed beef and ghee/refinded coconut oil.

HMU if u have more Qs...

[ Note: Probably typos in here, I wrote this on my phone after taking some CDP Choline; I want to see some upvotes on this dammit for the last 40min of life being fed into this post :P ]

I did a medically supervised liquid keto diet for about 9 months a few years back. I went from around 600 lbs to around 350 lbs in that time. I learned a lot from it, the results were great, but there are a lot of things that could have improved the experience. I got really sick from it, and learned a lot of lessons the hard way.

First, getting into keto sucks. There's a lot of BHB products out there that can help kick start keto. BHB ketones are one of the ones your body makes. If you drink some BHB, it helps tell your body "hey, it's time to use ketones", and can make the first 3 days a little easier.

The second big struggle I had was that I was having a lot of chocolate and dairy. I'd never had a problem in my life, but they ended up giving me a chronic acid reflux. My upper stomach valve basically stopped working, and I needed PPI antacids to stop the crazy pain. I just was leaky for months, so bending over to tie my shoes was a roller coaster every morning.

Third, be careful with your fiber! Ketochow has basically no fiber, and that can give you some serious bathroom problems. There's a difference between soluble and insoluble fiber, and the insoluble stuff helps the best for the bathroom. Try to keep daily fiber intake consistent.

Fourth, another huge reason to get some fiber still is for cholesterol. Keto foods often have a lot of cholesterol, but so do our fat stores! Cholesterol is a fatty molecule, and it's trapped inside the fat we store in our body. Lots of things are stored in our fat actually, like fat soluble vitamins too. When we lose a lot of weight fast, this comes back into our blood. Our liver takes this cholesterol and puts it into our gallbladder, so that we can excrete it the next time we have a fatty meal (because that fat will be able to absorb and carry the cholesterol). The problem about a no fiber keto diet is that your body will just re-absorb all this cholesterol, because it doesn't have any fiber to stick to. This ends up making your gallbladder full of cholesterol all the time, and leads to gallstones.

Note: Good places for fiber are avocados, nuts, leafy green veggies like kale and spinach, and some lower carb veggies like celery and asparagus.

Another important thing to know is that your body stores sugar for quick energy, in your liver and in your muscles. A normal person has about 1 lb of sugar stored with 10 lbs of water used to store it. This is a huge part of why starting keto, or eating back carbs, causes such amazing overnight weight changes. Don't get discouraged.

the tl:dr BHB can make starting keto easier. Get some fiber from avocados, nuts, and leafy green veggies like spinach / celery. Be careful if you're getting regular reflux from the whey / trigger foods like chocolate.

Personally, I think keto is a great way to keep your appetite suppressed while dieting. I feel like I was too low on carbs to function correctly though, and didn't tolerate it well long term. About a month or two in, I felt incredible though. About 4 or 5 months in I got brain fog, lethargy, GERD, etc. I wouldn't do it again, but it definitely works great for some people.

Thanks for the help! What do you think of this Chocolate Sea Salt? I understand nothing helps boost ketosis, but would it be a good electrolyte supplement? If not, can you recommend the electrolytes I need or where to get them from?

I went with the cheapest shavette I could find. Made in Italy, the Magic Razor < $10. Same is true with DE razors, find the right blade that works best for you in the shavette. This razor is lightweight but balances when resting the tang on the finger. Better quality shavettes like the Feather can be had but they're around the $100+ price point, personally for that price I'd rather have a true SR. You can break the blades in half using your hands but for a more consistent clean cut I use scissors.

Get this Minox: https://minoxbeard.com/

Put 1.5g of this in the bottle of Minox: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XD03VGE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Apply that to your face for 1-2 months and check back in. I will almost guarantee you will see some results. Be safe and good luck. I have had great results since May 26 with 12.5% and some other stuff in my routine. (PEO)

some people add pure L-Carnitine L-Tartrate powder to their minoxidil and nivea soft, as it's been shown to be beneficial to hair growth when used topically... so, it's assumed this is true for beard growth as well. it's alcohol soluble, so that's a requirement for adding it to something.

https://www.beardwiki.com/minoxidil-faq#l-carnitine-l-tartrate-lclt

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onUaJyTNiCE

I've done this as well, because it was $10 for 100grams and you only need to add about 1/4th of a teaspoon. just remember it has to be pure LCLT powder. no capsules. I'm on my third week of minoxidil and don't have any non-LCLT minoxidil experience to contrast it to, so I can't speak from personal experience on this way.

some people also add peppermint oil to their beard oil, as its been shown to aid in hair growth:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4289931/

just make sure you get Mentha Piperita (peppermint's scientific name) and not spearmint or some shit.
I make my own beard oil with half castor oil, half jojoba oil, and you wanna aim for about 5% peppermint oil.

hope this helps.

There is a difference between Keto 7 and standard DHEA but understand calling 'standard BS DHEA' is the equivelant of calling DHEA Keto 7 'BS'.

What I mean is that the effectiveness of both is dubious at best and if they do make any difference, it's relatively minor (caffeine is a stronger supplement than DHEA or Keto 7).

The idea behind Keto-7 is that it can help raise your bodies temperature faster during exercise, theoretically allowing you to burn a few more calories. In practice though there isn't a whole lotta evidence that backs this up, still WADA opted to place it on the banned list.

They don't provide justifications publicly about how they curate their banned substances list so there are a number of supplements whose presence on the list is a complete mystery. On the other end, there are supplements that are far more powerful than those on the 'banned' list that are absent from any WADA regulation.

Bottom line is that Machida is a clean athlete.

> True. But I've never seen where carnitine supplements can be made without animals, though I'm open to hearing if anyone else knows.

"Both our taurine and L. carnitine are from 100% vegan sources." - V-Dog (vegan dog food)

In fact, all good quality vegan dog/cat foods include l-carnitine.

There are also a number of l-carnitine supplements on Amazon marked as vegan:

  1. https://smile.amazon.com/NOW-L-Carnitine-500mg-Veg-Capsules/dp/B0013OSLQW/

  2. https://smile.amazon.com/L-Carnitine-1000mg-Servings-Metabolization-NutraChamps/dp/B01GS74CWK/

I wasn't able to find out a lot about exactly how vegan l-carnitine is synthesized other than this (PDF) document on production by enzymatic reactions from 1980. I'd assume the technology has progressed since then.

This question comes up enough that you'd think the answer would be easy to find. If it is, I'm just not very observant (or under-caffeinated). That said, here are the basic things we take:

Good multi-vitamin that also contains a mineral supplement (although you should be eating plenty of low-carb veggies, that doesn't always happen. Also, it's easy to get into a rut with the vegetables that you do eat. The mineral part of this helps make sure you aren't missing something important)

L-Carnitine (Helps your body transport fat - we buy this one)

An assortment of essential oils (fats). We do:
Flax Seed Oil
Borage Oil
Evening Primrose Oil

That's it.

u/Jurss · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Well, if you want them to make them try harder and spike their motivation, you should help them shed some of excess weight, I know people usually get a lot of motivation when they look thiner after a while.
So, maybe some weight loss supplements like this.

u/gregorykicks · 4 pointsr/wicked_edge

I use this for my everyday shave, and they're available at a Sally Hansen store if there's one in your town. The thing I miss most about using a real straight is the heft and solidness you get with a straight. I miss that feel of steel. However, for the price and convenience I'll keep using my magic razor until I can afford a proper sharpening stone.

As far as the op's concerns with butchering his face, I went straight from mach 3 to a straight and I didn't cut myself any until I got comfortable and lost some (quickly regained) respect for the razor. The biggest thing is to remember to never set the razor perpendicular to your skin (blade straight on) no matter how lightly, and to watch the corners of the blade.

u/triangleomg · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

Not OP but i would recommend one if you have patience and wouldn't mind trying different models.

For example this shavette has a very slim body and the angle can be very tricky to work out.

But this one has a wider blade holder, more like an SR (Im speculating here since I haven't used a SR) and i find it easier to get a consistent angle.

I found it easy adjusting to a shavette (switched from cartridges) and started getting good shave with no irritation and cuts with around a month of use.

Nutricost L-Carnitine Tartrate... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00XD03VGE?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I mix about 1.8 grams into a full bottle of minox, with a couple drops of peppermint oil as it smells pretty fishy on its own. As for the effectiveness, It’s hard for me to say, I’m taking like 8 supplements plus dermarolling plus beard oil, but in the two weeks I’ve been using lclt nearly all my vellus hairs darkened, there’s hairs next to my eyelids lol

u/Endless__Throwaway · 1 pointr/keto

I'm not sure if you're talking about items like this but...this was gross..and expensive AF. I'd stay away.

I use this when I fall off to help me avoid the flu. My stomach gets really upset if I use it more than 2 days in a row which helps to not rely on it as a crutch.

Tastes pretty good only drawback is it’s a little pricey.

i bought a kilo on amazon for a good price, said made in USA so i went for it rather than the Bulk Supplements brand which is usually made in china.

Amazon page Judging from the amazon page and the first review, this is just another miracle pill that doesn't really do anything. The guy said he lost 10 lbs in 6 months, i've lost 10 pounds in a month just by eating less carbs!

u/kels83 · 4 pointsr/todayilearned

Guys and Gals, there's a commercial version of this available for weight loss called Sweet Sweat and you can use a neoprene waist trimmer belt instead of saran wrap. Welcome to the year 2000 (key Conan O'Brien jingle here).

You forgot the ATP recycling I'd say, so the numbers might be wrong.

Here we got 15cal per scoop (11.38g) of BHB.

It’s legit. It’s one of those “unfortunately it’s an MLM so I don’t want to buy it” kind of things. Let me save you $100 by sharing this amazon link with you for non MLM product
