I’m terribly curious about this. However I don’t have access to an oscilloscope so I’m limited in my ability to investigate.

Very tempting. But I realize not exactly economically prudent to throw more money at investigating something that what the thing is worth. Then again a multimeter with a digital oscope built in would probably be a great tool to have while maintaining an old RV.
This is definitely not going to end without me buying an oscope. I’ve wanted one for many years and as I poke around I keep finding cheaper and cheaper options. There’s a lot you assemble yourself for $40, that looks fun. And for $60 there’s a pretty basic one that almost looks like a toy but is probably good enough. Hmm. So many choices!

You could short the output of the capacitive-voltage-divider to the output of the resistive-voltage-divider. This gives a wonderful thing called a compensated attenuator which is the circuit magic that lets your 1 megohm scope probe have 300 MHz bandwidth. I bought some of [these] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005O0V01E/ref=pe_825000_114657650_TE_item), 200MHz, 2 for $29. They seem to work OK. They are switchable, but I only use 10x because the probe loads my circuit less. I do suggest you use two probes the same, so you don't get skew when comparing two signals.
but wait.. there are spark plug wire extensions for that exact test. allows you to pull the coil out of the tube .. install the wire down the tube and plug the other end into the coil bottom..

Been seriously looking at some oscilloscopes lately. Any recommendations for one < $300. Lookin at something like this one possibly.

For starters, never buy cheap wires or grabbers or other small things from official sources. That's ebay fodder. Or amazon.
I do not have a scope and I've never used one but I'm not going to let that stop me.
I've found some on kijiji in the range of $250 CDN, but with nearly no experience with scopes I wouldn't know how to size one up.

I'm using this differential probe for both channels, so ground reference is just DC negative and neutral. The laptop and scope isn't grounded.
It's an electric train system. DC source is 650VDC off the rail, the voltage will fluctuate due to motor regen and occasionally drop due to poor rail contact.
